MY REVIEW: Bohicky's occupies a small space in a busy strip center near Target in Kemah. I wasn't expecting it to look much like a BBQ joint inside given its size and strip center affiliation. But it actually looks like a Texas BBQ place with its tin walls and brick wainscoating. It even smells right.
I got a half pound of 3 meats to go so I could do a taste sampling at home.
I asked the young man at the order station (they do have table service) who makes the sausage, hoping it would be some mon & pop meat market. He thought it was Sysco, but said proudly that they smoked it. It was better than I expected but never gonna be confused with sausage that comes out of the famous BBQ houses in LaGrange, Lockhart or Elgin---but not too bad, it was smoked nicely.
I judge a Texas BBQ establishment by the brisket. My grade for Bohicky's is a B- because there's no smoke ring and it was a little dry. But it was tender and had a nice smoke flavor. (Kinda reminded me of the brisket I used to get at L*uther's--not great, but not too bad).
The guy who prepared my take-out order said he thought pulled pork was the best thing they did. I probably know less about pork than anyone in North Carolina knows about brisket. Well, it tasted good, was tender and smokey---but in Mississipi and North Carolina don't they sauce the meat and mix it into the pork before they serve it?? Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. The stuff I got had no sauce, but was pretty tasty without it. They gave me sauce on the side which I'm guessing is intended for all 3 meats. Their sauce is tomato based with vinegar. Is that going to work on pork and beef alike? Seems like I heard the sauce for pulled pork was usually mustard based?? I haven't put the sauce into the pork yet---think I will take it slow & easy when I do.
They were advertising happy hour pretty hard when I was there mid afternoon with only one other customer. Deals on mini-sandwiches and big screen TVs would make this a good happy hour hang-out. But for serious Texas 'que, there are better choices not too far away.
