The Queen Vic Pub and Kitchen
2712 Richmond Ave, Houston, Texas 77098
MY REVIEW: I was in a group of 7 on a Wednesday evening. One of our group ordered a lamb kebab and said it was excellent. Several of us ordered the fish and chips. I thought it was a good rendition of the classic, but some members of my group were less impressed. I thought the beer selection (you can order a four half-glass taster set) was good and the rest of my group was happy with the mixed drinks. I thought our waiter was absolutely excellent. I would go back just to experience that level of professional service. You rarely find it anywhere these days. The ambiance is pleasant enough, but totally different from the other British pubs in Houston.

MY REVIEW: It pales in comparison to The Red L*ion. We were in the mood for English fare with the Olympics so this was our chance to try The Queen Vic. We had an attentive server but things were not so terrific thereafter. My order didn't heppen as requested (soup never showed up) and the entree was incorrect. Everyone else felt that their food was a little greasy. We did get a comped dessert which was a nice touch except that he didn't ask if we'd like to choose it(?). Setting isn't very pub like either. Loud too.
Pretty hit and miss in general. Given how terrific the Red L*ion is, that's where we'll go in the future.

MY REVIEW: We tried to go earlier this year but found need for valet daunting. This time we didnt care. Valet is by tip- we gave $5 tho the guy did little more than move the car once. He didn't really thank us either
Bill wa $76 for one near beer (Beck's) two fish and chips, two desserts (pinaplee/carrot cake and strawberry shortbread), and two apps sausage kabob and prawns with coconut curry and veggies. It was plenty of food for the money. The sausage kabob was actually like a bagel dog, with house-made sausage encased in soft flaky pastry served with a few pickled vegs and super hot mustard. It wasn't bd, but the sausage was very loose, soft and salty; the pastry was soft and salty, so except for the mint in the meat, it all blended together. The prawns et.al. were FANTASTIC. The naan that came with it was like home made pizza dough- not like naan at all. It even had cheese on it.
The fish and chips- well, first the planks of cod were enormous. We are to middle-aged people so perhaps do't have the appetites of the young, but really, it was too much. We struggled to finish it at home. And no delicious crumbles of batter. The french fries were heaven while hot. The desserts were OK, it was obvious they really try. For sure, if you are lactose intolerant, bring y our pills. Its in everything. the waiter got on our nervous- too eager- asking if we wanted change from a $100 bill! Right, dude, just keep that $25 tip! We would return, but to try the English stuff, and if we got f&c,we'd share it and get a side of fries!

MY REVIEW: Overall, I wasn't impressed. This is the first time my husband (who is Punjabi) and I have tried British Indian food. The cocktail prices are outrageous for the amount of liquid in the drinks. The Prince of Whales cocktail is delicious, but at $9 for a champagne glass, it's overpriced. The onion soup was delicious but I wish they had the option of getting a dinner portion. It's more of an appetizer's size. My husband had the Indian Kebab Burger, which he didn't like at all. He said that it tasted funny. I thought his french fries were good. However, they are stingy with their ketchup. They give you about 1 T. of ketchup. I asked for more and they brought me another 1 T. of ketchup. Seriously???
Also, the service was horrible. It took over 20 minutes for me to get a drink from the time I ordered it. And I had to ask the guy for a spoon for my soup 2X. I guess since they automatically add 20% gratuity to your bill, they don't have to care if you get good service.

MY REVIEW: Fabulous Goan bar bite with shrimp, crab, curry and veggies. The boar bangers and mash were terrific as were the cauliflower/mashed potatoes au gratin. But the topper was the lamb vindaloo. I'm warning you... you'll cry and sniff through the whole thing, cool off with the raita, puffy naan and seasoned basmati rice and come back for more if you like SPICY. Divine parfait dessert. Will be back again... maybe try high tea, too! No sig. problems with service. LOVED THE PLACE!! Want to try everything.

MY REVIEW: I had been wanting to try this place for a long time, finally made it with a large group. Had to valet since parking was completely full, but it was free so OK. Interior was very nicely decorated, but I guess I was expecting something a little more "British" feeling. Food ranged from OK to wonderful. Most of the food was pretty spicy - the sausage and mash had an Indian twist (nice but surprising if you aren't expecting it), the Queen's curry (scotch egg) was quite spicy as well but we had been warned on the menu. Unfortunately the food at this place was let down by seriously awful service; our server forgot to bring drink menus, then forgot to bring ordered drinks, would come to the table to take orders but only take 1/2 and then walk away before everyone could order, wrong drinks were brought, it really spoiled the evening. This is supposedly a pub so drink orders should be expected - she seemed more like a restaurant waitress, and frankly a bad one at that. I am unsure if we will return since the service was so abysmally bad. Having to pay the obligatory 18% was commented upon by everyone at our table - we paid it, but we didn't feel our server deserved it. Perhaps if we had been a couple in for dinner and then we left if would have been better, but sadly we have had better nights in other pubs. Next time we will probably go elsewhere.

MY REVIEW: First time visitor and I can't wait to go back! Atmosphere is great--and the food is distinct! Three Chili and cashew Paneer was out of this world! Bullet Naan with Goan guacamole delightful. YUMMY!!!

MY REVIEW: I've been here twice and am very impressed with the place. For starters, we had the bullet naan, which was good, but not a must have, and the scotch eggs - the first version of this dish that I didn't regret ordering - I would order this again for sure.
The lamb burger was fantastic - maybe the best burger I've had in Houston. I dumped the raita that is served with the accompanying fries on the burger and was in heaven. The fries were good but standard - see if you can sub something else you want to try. They will accommodate requests such as this - my second time in, I ordered something off the menu (fish over a curry polenta) with no problems.
Parking was not bad - if you arrive in prime time, check out the lot at the vet clinic next door, or park on the Kirby intersection and walk 2 blocks (I hate valet!!).
Last point - beer list was small but excellent (both draft and bottles). The bartenders seem to be more beer-guys than wine guys - so ask them for recs if you are not a beer-geek like me. They will steer you right.

MY REVIEW: Overall excellent experience. Started with Guinness and raw oysters (with fresh horseradish) at the bar. Then a couple of customized cocktails from the mixologist. Loved the deviled eggs, and the Bullet Naan is out of this world! Expected the Chicken Tikka Masala to have more cream in the sauce, but it was outstanding nonetheless. We will gladly return.

MY REVIEW: This review will be focused on my last visit, though all visits have been wonderful with great food, drinks and service. We had a large party and had reserved ahead of time for Valentines weekend, Saturday night at peak hour. I have been forwarned from other reviews that this restaurant may not be the place for a gathering because larger parties often received really bad service. I was so glad that I didn't listen!
Although I never requested it, they put us in a seperate party room, with a long table and candles running down the middle. Our waiter did an excellent job and was very attentive. The food came out hot, our drinks were filled and overall, we had a fantastic time. I want to thank Queen Vic for making this day memorable.
