Philippe Restaurant + Lounge

MY REVIEW: We've enjoyed Philippe's food before, at O*rsay in NYC and here in Houston at Bistro M*oderne. In both cases we loved our first visit, not so much the second. But there's good buzz on this place so we decided to try it, and man, it's just excellent! Such bright, fresh, vibrant flavors, reawakening old staples like French onion soup and steak tartare. Best coq au vin I've ever had, and an amazing desert called a crepe souffle that is exactly that, and so delicious you can't forget it. One complaint, and it's important: too bright. Huge windows upstairs and down, no curtains. Didn't feel inviting til after 9. All that unfiltered daylight is not conducive to comfortable fine dining. Fix that and this place is perfect! (or come in the winter!)

MY REVIEW: My son and I visited for his birthday dinner. We had the stuffed mussels, lamb meatballs on grilled pita and the crab and avocado in the little jar for appetizers. The mussels were delicious as were the lamb meatballs. They were a little spicy but very good. He had the beef cheeks with mac and cheese, he loved it. I had Jack's Scallops and they were delicious. We will definitely be back!

MY REVIEW: This was my first Friday off since month and my husband and I want to have an excellent dinner somewhere special. I had as an appetizer the Duck Tamales which were very good. My husband had the deep fried calamari which very plain and more crust. As a main course I had the special of the day the fish which was good but nothing really special. My husband ordered the lamb with couscous. The lamb was overcooked and not eatable. He had to give it back. They promptly offered him another dish. He had chosen the Salmon which was perfectly cooked but also plain and lacking of flavor. Overall all dishes were plain and lacking of seasoning. The best was the presentation. I was very much disappointed with the food and wouldn’t go back.

MY REVIEW: Excellent duck confit, outstanding service, decor is a bit sterile, prices akin to those in neighborhood, a very pleasant place.

MY REVIEW: Very creative menu, awesome wine list at reasonable prices, but unfortunately the kitchen can be hit and miss.
The appetizers of foi gras and beef ravioli were both outstanding: beautifully prepared, great presentation, fresh and flavorful.
The entrees both missed the mark: the hangar steak was over cooked and tough and the seabass and pasta was OK, but nothing really special. On previous visits I had beef cheeks and mac and cheese...which was a truly WOW! dish. This time however I'm not quite sure the value was there.
On a positive note the service was, as always, above and beyond.
