El Gallo De Jalisco

MY REVIEW: Don’t be scared-go on in. I know it looks a little sketchy from the outside but you will be welcome there. No frills just cheap Mexican classics. They lean more toward tacos, tortas and goditos but do have some combo plates. Along with awesome breakfast tacos there are plates with eggs and pancakes as well. There is a no alcohol and the only method of payment is cash. No need to dress up-you probably stay in your PJs

MY REVIEW: Found this place while cruising around. The outward appearance isn't much, but from experience I've learned that the best places are the ones that don't need to worry about appearances. Upon entering, we were greeted by the waitress, who was very friendly during our visit. I ordered the pastor burrito and an horchata, my friend had the enchiladas with beef fajita meat.
The food was a notch above any of the popular restaurants I've been to, including P*appasito's and C*huy's. The meats are all cooked and appropriately seasoned and/or marinated so that you can actually taste its natural flavor. While I personally prefer robust flavors, I was satisfied. My horchata wasn't the best, it tasted too much like big red gum, but I'm a really harsh judge of horchatas, I've only found one place in San Antonio that serves the perfect horchata.
But the ultimate goodies for me were the green and red salsa that came with the complimentary chips. While the chips are nothing to boast about, the salsa was the absolute best I've ever had...EVER HAD! The salsa had the perfect thickness and texture and it's literally made fresh..it was still steaming at the end of our meal. I don't know what they put in it but I was practically drinking it. I had to leave in a hurry but I'm definitely going back to buy a gallon of their salsa.
The prices are great, only $12.99 for my entire lunch. It's a great cozy place to dine in since it's always empty...most people get their orders to go. Overall, I'd definitely recommend the place to those who appreciate Mexican food but not to the fanatics.
