Uptown Deli
13500 W Airport Blvd, Sugar Land, Texas 77498
MY REVIEW: Pluses: clean, large variety on the menu, no-line no-waiting
Minuses: the food
I wasn't impressed with the taste / value of the sandwich combo I had a few months ago but decided to give this place another try. Second impression was the same as the first: the sandwiches are not large enough or flavorful enough to justify a $6 price tag (and then add another $2 for chips and fountain drink). I could have a meal at S*ubway for less and get it all decked out with spices and mustards, etc. for a flavorful conconction.
I had a rueben on this trip. Craving salty spicy corned beef and tangy sauerkraut on a nice dark rye bread that was toasted just right. What I got was some flavorless sliced processed corned beef and a totally flavorless "sauerkraut" (just some shredded limp cabbage) on a light rye that was lightly grilled and soft from butter. The only taste from the sandwich was the thousand island dressing. That is not an exaggeration. How can you call yourself a deli and not be able to create a Rueben? Why have it on the menu if you aren't going to go the effort to make it with real fresh corned beef and a nice bitter crunchy sauerkraut? Sandwich was served with a small serving of pasta salad made with rotini pasta, sliced black olives,..Sounds good, right? Wrong. Instead of using a seasoned oil based dressing (as you would expect),they decided to use a "cheap mayonnaise". You know, the kind that tastes thick and icky. I love black olives and made an attempt to salvage a few slices but the dressing tasted so bad that I just tossed it.
If you're in the neighborhood and hungry, I'd suggest you stop at the Jack in the B*ox a block away. I'm not a Jack fan but it would be an improvement over this "deli".
