Heritage India Cuisine (CLOSED)

 3201 S Main St Stafford

3201 S Main St, Stafford, Texas

MY REVIEW: This place offers a couple of twists on Indian food not commonly served in the Houston area - Malayali, the cuisine of the spice coast state of Kerala - and Chindian, Indian Chinese food, plus some of the standbys of Indian menus like Tikka Masala, Masala Dosa, Pakoras, Aloo Mutter, Bagara Baingan, etc..

I’ve been working my way through the menu of the Malayali dishes which are quite different from the Northern Indian and Southern Indian vegetarian dishes that are more well known. There are very wet, soupy curries, dry curries (that are thought to have inspired the dry curries of Malaysia), Palappam (fermented rice pancakes) and Tapioca, i.e., yuca, a staple starch. Wheat breads are not that popular in Kerala and there is no naan on the menu. Best dishes have been the Beef Fry, a dry curry, Duck Curry, a very thick hearty curry, Kacheyamoor, a spicy buttermilk curry, and the Palappam. I’ve also had Pork Fry, Fish Curry (kingfish) and Karimeen Fry, a palm sized fish seasoned with a seasoning paste and fried whole, Avial and Thoran, two vegetable curries and Payasam, the South Indian version of kheer made with vermicelli instead of rice, plus some great chutneys and achar.

They have a Kerala Thali which offers 9 different dishes on one tray and also a Sunday buffet from 11:30 to 3 that serves nothing but Kerala specialties.

They’ve just recently taken on a new partner who does Northern Indian and Indian Chinese dishes which he assures me are better than Chinese done by Chinese! I have yet to get to that part of the menu but I’ve really enjoyed exploring these new tastes. On Saturday a buffet offers only Northern Indian and Indian Chinese dishes.

You frequently will be served by the owners themselves; it’s a small place but very nice with green and white linens and stemmed glasses. Prices are modest. They also serve beer and wine including Kingfisher, India’s biggest selling beer.

MY REVIEW: I went there to pick up some food. The food was nice, but, there was no one to receive me in the door. After a long wait, a mexican lady came and took me to the buffet section. There was one another lady.

I ordered 2 masala dosas, avial, vegetable curry, parathas and tomato rice. When the food was ready, there was only one masala dosa and eventually I told Mr.Mohan that I have ordered for 2 wherein there was only one dosa. Mohan responded immediately and was little upset with the mexican lady that accepted the order. I am sure that she was not able to understand English. The management should recruit some one who can speak in English and greet the customers in a meticulous manner.

Otherwise, no complaints. Food was very decent and tasty!

MY REVIEW: Excellent Kerala – India style food. Food cooked with aromatic varity of spices. I suggest Duck Curry with Appam ( rice pancake with coconut and yeast). Yum-Yum-Yum.
