MY REVIEW: I’ve had to spend some time in Baytown recently and was looking for good eats and happened upon this place on Business 146. I was surprised to find it at all and even more surprised when the lady behind the counter told me it had been in business 8 years. Roti are not very common in Houston.

It’s in a former P*izza Hut; it’s spacious and dim inside. Most people seem to get food to go. I was in line behind three ladies getting plates to go; they were loaded ($9 I think). Food is served from a steam table and the choices include goat, oxtails, beef, chicken, potatoes, channah (chickpeas) and I believe fish and shrimp. This is not jerk, this is curried. There were also two kinds of rice dishes and a good looking salad.

I got the chicken in a green curry which comes with some of the potatoes. In India and Pakistan, roti means a flat bread, but in the West Indies it can also refer to a dish, sort of like a Carribean burrito, made with the flat bread. There was a lot of meat and potatoes for $6.

One of the ladies ahead of me had requested lots and lots of their hot sauce but the server was reluctant to give me much since it contains scotch bonnet peppers. I could have gone back for more but I thought it was fine without it.

The chicken, goat and oxtails at least are cooked and served bone-in. Supposedly some people pick these up and eat them like a big burger but you are given plastic utensils. You’ll also need lots of napkins as you have to pick up the pieces of meat to get all the meat off of them.

This is my first experience with rotis and I was pleased and will have no hesitation to go back when I’m in Baytown again.

The sign on the building calls it Nio’s Roti Grill and Carribean Bakery but I saw no baked goods for sale. They have some Carribean sodas including Mauby, an acquired taste. The signs also indicates they sell doubles, a smaller snack food, and patties.
