Chart House Restaurant

MY REVIEW: We’d wanted “UpStairs at The Flying D*utchman”, but that’s now “R*ed Sushi”. In the 80’s, in Melbourne Florida, “The Chart House” was an example of Fine Dining. The Kemah eatery of the same name isn’t. I’m a 50-something old-timer who thinks that when you spend $150 for your wife’s birthday dinner, you ought to come away feeling satisfied.
Calamari $11, “Lightly fried with sweet and sour peppers.” There was nothing “lightly fried” about it. The breading was thick and heavy, with way too much of Tony Chachere's creole seasoning dumped in. The peppers were mashed and overcooked. For this appetizer, go to P*erry’s Italian Kitchen! Chart House Chopped Salad $6, and the Caesar $7 – Flavor was o.k., but the lettuce in both was a bit wilted – like it was prepped a couple of days earlier.
Shrimp Scampi $26 – Eight medium (26-30) shrimp and pasta. The garlic was too “raw” and bright, the shrimp were overcooked. Filet Mignon $29. On the plate were the 8-oz. fillet and an ice-cream-scoop of “garlic-mashed” potatoes. The adornment of some carrot strings atop the perfect potato dome and sprig of parsley completed the presentation. I asked for a bit of Béarnaise – way too heavy. But the steak was perfect. Forty bucks at R*uth’s Chris doesn’t buy a better-tasting or textured piece of red meat. As I sampled the potatoes, I imagined they’d been “extended” with something out of a box. They were bland.
Chart House Cosmo $10 only filled the martini glass 2/3’s full; for ten bucks, fill the glass! Hot Chocolate Lava Cake $9 It was o.k., but I think you can get the same thing at D*airy Queen for $3.99.
Kemah’s Chart House - it’s a J*oe’s Crab Shack, but there are tablecloths, the wait staff wear ties, and the prices are trebled. Like Jimmy W*alker’s, “Upstairs at the D*utchman” is gone. For the Clearlake area, #1 is still T*ommy’s, with either of Chris P*erry’s places a very close second.

MY REVIEW: Traveling through town we came upon this very nice restaurant. The decor was outstanding. The service was an 8 on a 0 - 10 scale. The view of the bay was tremendous. My steak was slightly overcooked, but the manager offered to redo my order to make me happy. The staff was very nice. The best part was the high end salad bar. The fruits and vegetables were well displayed and fresh. There was caviar on the salad bar. Overall, I had a great dining experience.

MY REVIEW: Not very impressive...
We arrived 10 minutes prior to our reservation and had to wait until 25 minutes past our reservation time to be seated, all while an open table for 6 (our party was 4) remained empty the whole time.
The food was somewhat bland, certainly not worth $20-$30 per entree. Also, we were told by the waiter that one of the dishes came with mahi mahi when it actually came out with a small chunk of salmon. After pointing this out, a large block of greasy mahi mahi was presented. On the plus side, things were brought out within a reasonable time. The plum sauce with the coconut shrimp was tasty, as well as the snapper wellington. The dessert menu is rather limited with only 5 very standard offerings (key lime pie, creme brulee, cheesecake, a raspberry sorbet, and a chocolate "lava" cake). The lava cake sounded good, but requires a 30 minute preparation time.
The manager came by, but instead of asking how our "experience" was this evening, simply asked how our "entrees" were. haha. Also, apparently they offer FREE valet parking - which would have been useful information for a hostess to share with us when we called to make our reservation. When leaving, the manager and all 4 hostesses were apparently too engrossed in their conversation to say goodbye or thank us for coming.
Oh, and the music is all some odd sort of "modern jazz" remix stuff, played louder than needed. I would not recommend this restaurant, and in the future will stick with one of the old favorites like B*abbins.
