MY REVIEW: Strong Points - nicely decorated

Weak Points - music WAY to loud, waiter is sloppy and does not listen, service was horrid.

My husband and I stopped by for a late lunch on a Saturday. One other couple in restaurant. Music was so lound you had to shout at person across from you, waiter had a hard time hearing our order becuase of this. Ordering: my husband ordered 3 rolls designating no sesame seeds. I ordered vegetable tempura appetiser and 1 veggie roll.

Appetiser came out, and my husband's first roll - covered in seeds. Waiter dropped the food and "ran" so fast we were unable to tell him to take the order back. It took almost 5 minutes to get the waiter back (remember the restaurant is empty). Told him about the seeds and the waiter argued that my husband only asked for no seeds on the dragon roll. THe waiter finally took the food, back.

Brought out the next roll for my husband and the sides, not top, covered in seeds - btw I still have no food. Got the waiter back again, this time he argued that the seeds were only on the sides and not many at that. My husband is very patient and passive, he was very nicely trying to explain, when I jumped in and told the waiter that the seeds would put my husband in the hospital and as long as the waiter did not mind Aka receiveing the emergency room bill and hospital stay he was welcome to leave the dish. Only then did he take the second dish back to have it remade.

More than 10 minutes later, my roll and all 3 of my husbands rolls came at the same time. Food was good, but NOTHING is worth that effort.

MY REVIEW: It's a trendy place with excellent service. The menu is creative. The sushi is pretty decent but with small pieces of fish and the nori was chewy. The best time to go to Aka is during happy hour, the beers are cheap ($2) and the small plates start at $5. Try the crater roll, black pepper beef tataki and the baked green mussels.

MY REVIEW: This place is really beautiful with great ambiance and the service is also high quality, which unfortunately, the food does not match. My friend and I went there for happy hour and ordered a few items each: I got the edamame (average), vegetable tempura (not bad but the sweet potatoes were hard and the zucchini squash was too thick and watery) and the Philadelphia roll, which was average, too. When we asked to take it home, as we ordered more than we could eat, we were told "no". We could take it with us if we paid "full price". If it had been worth it, we might have done so, but considering that it was not that good and being rather put off that we could not take the food we paid for with us, we left it there. Everyone should know that it was not indicated anywhere on the menu regarding this "restaurant policy" of not taking home "happy hour" food. We want all of you to know that we will not be going back here and hope you don't waste your time here either when there are so many other places with better sushi that also have integrity.

MY REVIEW: I met up with some girlfriends there just last night and we had a grand time and quite the nice meal. I ventured off the beaten path and had the godzilla roll. It has doritos in it. Yes.. I know.. not for the purest but for an new twist it wasn't bad. We were there during happy hour so had some nice plum wine spritzers and at the end I ordered a dessert for the table.

Imagine my surprise to find that the waiter had comped the nice dessert. I've only been there twice so far but I've yet to have a bad moment or bad bite.

MY REVIEW: Very Nice Atmoshere, good happy hour.

I really love their atmoshere. I think Aka Sushi House's tempura dishes are pretty good. nice presentation as well. BUT!!! everytime I visited the SUSHI was not tasty at all. Well the fish was fresh. But I guess they just do not know how to cook RICE. I was so shocked they made sushi and maki with that total badly cooked rice. ( either too much water or under cooked)

I really wish Aka Sushi house if they know how to cook the rice. Or just go there, do not eat any rice food. Also their Udon just taste like water. no seasoning.

MY REVIEW: I really enjoy this place. Delicious creative rolls, gracious service. They are always inventing new/fun rolls and bring these on the house so they can get your feedback. Same with the bartenders who send out little sample cocktail creations to try. The hot and cold dishes are fresh and delicious. I like the modern asian decor - always a relaxing and comfortable place to enjoy.

My only suggestion is that the very gracious and sweet waitress (same one on all visits) is a little bit TOO chatty which can be distracting when you want to enjoy your dinner guests. She is very young and I think it's more a maturity thing than anything else.

MY REVIEW: The sushi chefs are really fun to talk with. Also, the waitress Gwen is very pretty and attentive. The red and black colors are warm and soothing. I enjoyed the Chirashi sashimi bowl for $17.00. This is a great neiborhood sushi restaurant.

MY REVIEW: My fiance and I stopped by at 7:30PM on Friday to check out the scene. He said the girls at the door weren't Japanese. The waitstaff all appeared to be Asian. We were seated at the booth and our waiter was nice. We tried nightly special with scalop and enoteki mushrooms which was quite delightful, albeit petit (as compared to a similar dish offered at R*a Sushi). The miso soup was white and my fiancee was not that impressed. We enjoyed the agedashi tofu because it was flaky on the outside and they put a lot of attention and love-- shaved ginger, bonito flakes, and chives. We ordered the 9 piece chef sushi special with 2 rolls. Items were small -- frozen octupus, cheaper and smaller salmon roe -- but for a hungry guy it was fine.

Atmoshere cozy and noisy. Crowd was fugly and a few giants among them.

We definitely shall return to savor the happy hour menu!

MY REVIEW: I've been frequenting this restaurant since it 1st opened it's doors. The sushi is wonderful! They have fresh fish & the best Saba Nigiri i've ever tasted in town. Their signature rolls are creative & visually pleasing, I tried the crater roll ( personal favorite ), Godzilla roll, and a few other specials that the head sushi chef had created. The kitchen food is equally as great, they have the best Tempura shrimp in town, Shiso Hasame Age, and other traditional dishes.

They have a great happy hour menu & the prices are not too high either! I love this place & just need tell others about it. I will be back for more!

MY REVIEW: Please note that my friend and I did NOT try their sushi, so we can't comment on whether it is any good. We will be back to sample the sushi, which is the main food of a sushi house, obviously. There were a variety of non-sushi items offered on the menu. Of the food we had, especially noteworthy was the tempura, which was light and crispy, not greasy and soft like some places.

MY REVIEW: I took my friend Teri for lunch on New Year's Day for her birthday. We were both very impressed by the atmosphere (traditional but modern Japanese design with dark woods and red accents) and the beautifully-plated food. My friend ordered the beef terriyaki kitchen special and I ordered the Salmon Bento. The food quality was high, generous portions, and the prices were low (our meals $7 and $9). They also brought my friend a delicious tempura fried ice cream on the house. We will definitely be back!!! A very good lunch!!!

MY REVIEW: The ambiance was very progressive... the decor was modern, stylish yet comfortable. Music was sort of “techno modern club mix” not too loud but if you wanted to just sort of dissolve into the ambiance and the music, it was a great "groove". Everyone in our group loved the experience. The food was spectacular...The "Sushi-master's" suggestions were great. Service very good, the kitchen was a little slow, but the sushi bar was great... the quality of the fish and the attention to detail more than made up for the delays from the kitchen. The manager was out on the floor interacting with the customers and staff...I would describe the over all experience as outstanding...it is a new restaurant and they seem to be getting the kinks worked out...but all in all I would HIGHLY recommend it.

MY REVIEW: This is a must try! The atmosphere is ideal for business meetings and just a wonderful backdrop for a delicious sushi experience and a good time with friends and family.

Each sitting area is very quaint and private enhancing a very intimate dining experience.

Located in one of the hottest areas in Houston, Aka's decor is sleek and contemporary. I have held many business meetings during the happy hour and I must say it has always been a great experience and a big hit!

The wait staff is young and hip and the food is extraordinary. The sushi is always fresh and new. There are many original signature dishes to try that one can not find in other sushi restaurants and the staff always makes you feel like a VIP. Go for it and just hang out! You have to sit and chow down for yourself!

Recommended: Do the "Let us surprise you" ordering...you wont be disappointed...In other words, we just let the chef do the ordering...it is incredible!

Favorite: Peppered Beef!!!! A must try!!

MY REVIEW: I decided to give this place a try since it's in an area I'm always in. I went at 6pm, which was during their happy hour, but the place was not full.

Service: Seems like some kids with cursory training are running the service side of things. They are sweet and polite, but service is slow, forcing halfhearted explanations and apologies from servers. I felt bad for getting annoyed, but I don't want my food to take forever AND to feel guilty about it.

Food: I ordered my "test items" for any new sushi place -- what i consider basics. All are from the happy hour menu. I got the "hamachi sampler" for 7.50 (including 2 pieces sashimi, two pieces nigiri), the salmon avocado roll (4.50 during happy hour, 5.00 normal), and an ebi (shrimp) tempura to start (2 pieces ebi, 2 pieces vegetable, 3.00).

The salmon avocado roll was pretty blah. The salmon was average in quality, the avocado was almost crunchy (should have been more ripe to serve), and there was too much rice. The ebi tempura was tasty, nice sized shrimp pieces (but this dish came out well after both of my sushi, not much of a starter). The hamachi sampler was pretty bad. The nigiri was so-so, but the sashimi was horrible. The hamachi was extremely sour, like it had been soaking in vinegar -- to mask a lack of freshness? I'm not sure. Just plain bad.

There are definitely other sushi places I'd go to before I return to this one, unless they really shape up their act.
