MY REVIEW: It's a great place and atmosphere, and to relax and have dinner. Best service in town, the Hawaiian Fried Chicken is really exceptional! I always get the shrimp tempura (fried shrimp) it cost way less than the local T*ony's in town and they make it fresh not frozen! This is the best ethnic cuisine you'll have in Texas!

MY REVIEW: Today, I decided to journey a little outside of Houston. I had heard about the Aloha Cafe here at B4-U-Eat, and actually went there once on a Saturday for dinner. Unfortunately, they are not open on Saturdays at all, so I had to wait a bit until I could try them. I went out there today, and boy, am I glad I did.
The cafe is situated in the wasteland that was once the Sealy Outlet Mall, before all of the businesses moved to Katy Mills. The place is mostly deserted these days (save for the local junior college and Texas Workforce office), so the cafe is a little off the beaten path, even though it's right next to I-10. Once you walk in though, it's very homey, and reminds me a lot of Hawaii. Unlike all of the other Hawaiian fast food joints in Houston, Aloha Cafe really has a lot more Hawaiian style, and feels like island ohana (family).
The food is very different too. Don't get me wrong, I like all of the other Hawaiian restaurants (and have eaten at all of them). But Aloha Cafe's food tastes more like what I remember in Hawaii. In fact, it's really more of a sitdown place than takeout. I had the beef teri plate - really tender teriyaki beef, 2 scoops rice and one scoop mac, just like in the islands. The food was amazingly good. I did want to get a shave ice as well, but I had to drive back into Houston, which wouldn't have worked. There were a surprising number of people in the place, which is always a good sign.
I talked to Susan, the owner, and fortunately they are well-connected with the Hawaiian community here in Texas. They have cultural events, where the folks get together and eat, and there will be music and dancing as well. She's pretty cool, and I hope they can succeed in such an unusual location.
Now, for you Pidgin speakers: Eh, dis place got broke da mouth, ono Hawaiian food. You got to go go dere, to kau-kau and have talk story. Dis restaurant is real Ohana, sistah Susan is real da kine.
In other words, the drive is well worth it! I highly recommend this restaurant.

MY REVIEW: Great food, both Hawaiian and other entrees; fantastic salads-healthful, large and delicious; desserts are OUTSTANDING; Island atmosphere sets the tone for the "ono" food to follow; store items include island clothing, sauces, books, teas, coffees, candy etc, so you can enjoy Hawaiian food at home too. Shave ice available every day. Only about 15 minutes past Katy Mills on I-10 in the Sealy Outlet Mall. Very much worth the trip.
