La Grande Margarita (CLOSED)

 12266 FM 1960 Rd W Houston TX

MY REVIEW: Visited for the first time last night. Service was very good and portions were large. Tortilla soup was a bit salty but everything else was GOOD! Very reasonable prices and kids under 12 eat free on Mondays (with adult entree purchase). All in all we were very pleased and will visit again in the near future. Hope to see you there!

MY REVIEW: First visit - very impressed (my wife and I are very picky about Mexican/Tex Mex food). Prices are quite reasonable and the portions are big. We each had the Beef Fajita "Changa". They're huge but come with rice only and no beans. We ordered a side of refried beans, and they weren't very good. But the "Changa" was above average. I had the 18 oz margarita and tasted good but didn't appear to be very strong. We found out the Monday is kids eat free night, and Wed is $2 Marg. all night long. Overall all a pleasant and filing dining experience. We'll definitely be going back.

MY REVIEW: I said they "know my name..." but that's kind of a lie since my nickname for the longest time was "Changa Dude". I try to change it up once in a while, but I have to have at least one Beef Changa per week! It's a drug to me, and I'm addicted!

Pros: 1) It always seems that La Grande's food is made with good quality meat, etc... unlike other "cheap" mexican restaurants. Sure, you might save a buck at some places like N*nfas but you're sacrificing quality.

2) I typically sit in the bar 'cause I don't have kids, but it seems the main restaurant area is great for families. It's neat how the music/atmosphere is separate too. TV's galore with upbeat music in the bar and family style seating/dining with spanish music in the main area. A good mix.

3) Although I'm not a big margarita drinker, I do like their Margaritas a lot! I usually don't drink margaritas 'cause they're sugar-infused lime juice with little flavor/alcohol at most places, but La Grande has some well-rounded, tasty Margaritas. Since they started this $2 Margarita special I might just have to learn to love margaritas! (I haven't been yet, but I think it's on Wednesdays)

Cons: Too close to my house!!

I'm not sure what is the deal with a previous review about "no mexicans" on staff... I don't go to P.F. C*hangs expecting a bunch of Asians to be running around, just like I don't go to Italian restaurants expecting the staff to be a bunch of Tony Sopranos (Italian's). I go for the food and atmosphere. It's not easy to get good staff at any restaurant, much less narrow it down to a race as well.

If you ever have a problem, let the owner know. He's great at being attentive and is genuinely interested in maintaining quality/consistency.

MY REVIEW: I was brought here for a party and being from out of town, didn't know what to expect - especially after reading many mixed reviews before going. They seem to have gotten their act together as far as service goes. We were well taken care of and the owner came over a few times just to make sure we were covered on all our needs.

The food was very good. We had a fairly large party and it seemed like everyone ordered different things and I heard a lot of "this is really good" comments from around the table. I had the stuffed chicken breast and would order it again in a second - if I ever get back there! That said, the margaritas would almost be worth the trip from Chicago!

And why all the negativity about no Mexicans working there (although there were a few)? Since when is the quality of food/service dictated by the ethnicity of it's staff. Ever hear of F*rontera Grill in Chicago? (If not, look it up.) Rick Bayless is not Hispanic and neither are most of his staff...Go here - drink, eat and have fun and tell us what yo think - I did.

MY REVIEW: I was looking forward to my visit but was instead extremely disappointed. Service was terrible. We had to ask 4 times for additional salsa. Once the waitress brought the salsa, we had to ask for chips. Two in our party order the El Grande Appetizer plate to split. Instead the waitress brought them some huge dinner to split. They had to send it back and wait for the original order to be made. It wasn't even compted. If I give them another chance it will be far in the future.

MY REVIEW: The service was excellent, fast and friendly servers. I disagree with the comment that says there are no mexicans there, well the cooks are 95% of mexicans and there are mexicans on the wait staff. You must go to try the white wings and the stuffed avacados those are my fave. tender and full of flavor. The 42 oz Margarita where you get to keep the glass was worth it, i shared it with my love and took the memories of the party we attended there home.

MY REVIEW: Apparently this place is aptly named, because this is the first decent Margarita I have had in quite a while. I especially liked the "puffy" tacos. Owner came by and checked on us and seemed sincerely interested in the service level because they are so new. My husband raved about his fajitas, ie, meat was very good quality, good side of guacamole, etc. Prices seemed very reasonalble so we will definitely go there again!

MY REVIEW: Really good margarita...however, the service was not very good at all. Lunch time, about 10 tables full, and still slow. Had to ask for more salsa & iced tea. I hope they get the kinks worked out ~ the margaritas were very good.

MY REVIEW: Strong points - I give it to them...BEST MARGARITA's in HOUSTON. (Seriously, you will not be disappointed). Also the OWNER is VERY PLEASANT.

Weak points - This is suppose to be a mexican restaurant. First problem...not a single mexican works there, so there is nobody on staff to tell them were they are going wrong. Nothing about this place says "Mexican Restaurant" except the name. The fajitas are too Tex Mex and there is waaayyyyy to much "grass" (lettuce and stuff) on the tacos a carbon. Hint 1 to management: Always serve a la carte with meat only and tortilla, grass on the side. Hint 2: Always and ALWAYS server salsa WARM NOT COLD. Hint 3: Hire mexican cooks. They know more about fajitas than the average texan. The fajitas have a great cut of meat BUT too tough. It's badly prepared and served looking a wierd color. Kinda orange on the outside. I won't say they are nasty, JUST TOUGH and CHEWY.

Now understand they have not yet had their GRAND OPENING so they are still knocking out some kinks. I've been there twice and waited another week before giving them a review. This place has a great idea, especially with the name, but if its going to be a restaurant and not a PUB, with that name they need to upgrade the service and the food. There was a wait the 2nd time I was there and the restaurant was half empty. The wait was because the kitchen was backed up. WITH ONLY 10 tables of people? They need help and help FAST. Nevertheless, EVERY TABLE had margaritas, so that should tell you why people are going there. Also, their largest margarita is HUGE. BUT they haven't started selling it yet. They only show the Glass. The talk is that the Margarita will go for $25.00 a glass and you keep the glass. This is because the owner feels with such a nice glasss people may steal the Glass. Bad idea. Who would pay $25.00 for a Margarita? Not even with Patron would I do it. Basically, they are selling you that expensive glass they ordered. Need to rethink that guys. People will top out at $15.99 for a Rita. They don't care what you serve it in.
