MY REVIEW: It's not the worst meal I've had out, but it's in the top 5...
Whoa, that was a foul dinner! I can't believe Crostini closed down in this location but Cafe Zol has been here for 9 months! Where to begin... I like the atmosphere. They have stained glass and a nice decor. The bar area looks quite nice and there is a pleasant patio (although, we ate inside). I was curious about the idea of Scandinavian Tapas, so I was ready to eat. We started off with the Danish Cheese Pocket w/ Toast and Jam (i.e., deep fried brie). Interesting idea, I love melted brie, but I think a lot of the brie ended up in the bottom of the deep fryer. Also, one of the wedges was over-ripe (very ammonia-y). We next had cups of the lobster chowder. This was brilliantly awful! Absolutely inedible. Fishy tasting dishwater. Yuck.
We had already ordered tapas, so unfortunately we could not leave yet. We got the Swedish Meatballs (dry, with odd sauce), Mini Burgers (very dry, with decent homemade fries), and the Duck Fingers (ducks must have small hands full of cabbage). A very disappointing meal. The server was very apologetic, and very nice. I will eat ANYWHERE before I eat here again.

MY REVIEW: Boy - what an addition to the Houston dining scene. We tried Zol for the first time last night and it was outstanding. We had a variety of their Scandinavian tapas including such things as Danish Meatballs & Purple Cabbage, Duck Fingers & Apples, Lobster Chowder, Tilapia w/ Lemon Creme sauce, Filet Mignon and all were outstanding. The service was great and the accompanying soft sweetish bread reminded us of Scandinavia. Draft beer was good and included Carlsberg and Fat Tire to complement the food. Our only worry was that it was a tad quiet for a Saturday night so being new I hope they make it! We will be back and take our friends with us!

MY REVIEW: The staff and owner at Cafe Zol are the key to the establishment. As soon as you walk in the door be prepared to enjoy the experience. On our first visit we tried the fruit and cheese plate and it was delicious, we ordered the meatballs, but there was a bit of miscommunication and to sum it up we were given some on the houseto take home. The choice of beverage was suggested by the ever delightful Gideon and it has now become one of my favorite beers. You must go and check out the open face sandwiches, or I should just say anything on the menu has not been a disappointment. Looking forward to returning and if you haven't gone, go soon.

MY REVIEW: I finally made it to Cafe Zol, and was pleasantly surprised. The decor was very interesting, as was the menu. So many delicious looking items on the menu. I settled on an open-faced sandwich consisting of meatballs on a crescent. It was wonderful. The wait staff was especially friendly. I can't wait to go back again.

MY REVIEW: The food here was a mess. We tried the duck breast and the swedish meatballs. The duck was overcooked, and the meatballs were dried out. It took far too long to serve. The rest of the menu was unappealing. Hopefully they can turn this around, since it's just opened.

MY REVIEW: Interesting, first Scandinavian place I can remember in Houston,
Swedish and Danish meatballs, split pea soup, mostly tapas.
Decor does not seem Scandinavian, but fills a niche and might do well.

MY REVIEW: Have been noticing this place in progress for a couple of months now. Finally it is open. Nice decor, prominent bar, comfy patio. The menu specializes in Scandanavian food, led by a Danish chef. That's not very clear from the name, but its good to know. Some interesting, unique dishes, makes it worthwhile to explore. Lunch menu focuses on open face sandwiches, and I had a tasty pate sandwich, with a nice salsa and bread. I can't wait to try the dinner menu.
