MY REVIEW: OK, I read every review before I tried this new Katy restaurant and tried to approach my experience with an open mind.

I ordered a fully dressed oyster po-boy and a bowl of gumbo to go. The oyster po-boy came with about 6 fried oysters and a big helping hand of french fries. The flavor of the oysters was excellent and the dressing was very, very good and the seasoning on the french fries was also good. The french bread was fresh and the overall presentation was very good. It was gone in no time!

Everyone has their own idea of what good gumbo is based on what they grew up on. I happened to grow up on a gumbo that is very dark and full of flavor and theirs was no exception. It was excellent! dark, rich and had plenty of chicken, sausage and blue crab. I was also impressed by the spicy flavor....too many restaurant gumbos - in my opinion - aren't spicy enough.

all in all, I would rate the food and experience an 8 out of 10. the only challenge is the price. I am always willing to pay good money for good food and while I was impressed, their prices could have been ....say about 20% less.

if they dropped their prices 15 - 20%, they would probably see a nice increase in business.

However, I suppose the high prices may be justified if we tried the full weekend, evening experience with live music and all....I give these guys a thumbs up and hope they prosper.

MY REVIEW: FOOD WAS GREAT! Small portions and a little pricey, HOWEVER, the staff and servers made it all WORTH IT! The owner is VERY NICE AND FRIENDLY. The chef came to our table to ask how we like the food. Crab cakes, gumbo, boudin, crawfish, seafood pasta are all VERY VERY tasty. I'm from Lafayette, LA and I know good Louisiana food in Texas and this place definitely has it!

MY REVIEW: If you want to dine in a classy atmosphere, this is the place. I like it a lot and don't mind paying for quality and class. The food is great even though I am not a big seafood eater. I usually order the shrimp po boy and red beans and rice. I had never had boudan before so I tried it. It was really good but a little too spicy for my taste buds. The staff is great, the owner is very friendly as well. A band was playing one night and they were great. I didn't have a problem with paying a cover charge for the band, but it depends on what you value. I value class, a nice atmosphere and wonderful people so I would rather spend my money there.

MY REVIEW: I thought this place was very nice - nice decor, nice lighting, etc. You can tell it's new but it is quite imaginative. The people are very friendly and the owner was very engaging. As for prices, they are on the low end of high, but that's what good New Orleans food costs.

We had the Gumbo, Crab Cakes and Boudin for starters. This was the best Gumbo I ever tasted! The crab cakes were thick, tasty and a bit spicy, but I loved the texture (somewhat crunchy on the outside) and the Boudin was also great. I had some potato salad and that was also the best tasting I ever had. I definitely will visit again.

MY REVIEW: the setting was very nice and comfortable. the staff was excellent.the owner, very friendly.the food was too expensive.there was also a $10.00 cover charge the night i visited this establishment.(to pay for the band.)i didn't hire this band,so why were they put on my payroll!!!(even though the band was great)maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if the cover charge was $5.00....this place is way to small to have prices like that thrown at you. they also need to come down on the price of their food....a bit of advise.....when you serve food you have to remember that you are serving adults.....adults want to be fed like adults not children.the same way they are fed if they went p*appas, red l*obster,etc....their prices and your prices are running neck and neck....you may ask would i go back to the taste of new orleans..and the answer would be absolutely..because i love the atmosphere....i can always eat at home.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I went there today and were very pleased with our entire dining experience. The environment was clean, classy, but very comfortable and inviting. Our waitress was very friendly and engaging as were the owner and chef who also came out to say a polite hello.

The food was delicious - the best spinach dip I've tasted to date. My husband actually smiled when he took his first bit of the catfish/shrimp dinner and told me this would be his new "spot." This coming from someone who's not easily impressed. As for the prices, we felt that every dollar was well spent. We'll definitely be back soon.

MY REVIEW: I am a huge fan of Authentic New Orleans cooking and "Taste of New Orleans" does not disapoint. My favorite dish being jambalaya I am always hesitant to try it outside of New Orleans, however being I have enjoyed every dish I have tried here I gave it a shot. Not since my favorite place in New Orleans closed had I had such authentic and wonderful jambalaya. Unlike so many places they did not hide the flavors with too much seasoning or pepper. The owners came to the table and sat and chatted with us which was a real treat. The portions are huge so be warned and I highly recomend the potato salad it is a nice twist on an old favoite. We are looking forward to going back this weekend to listen to the jazz band (it plays every Friday and Saturday) now that they have a full bar! It is a wonderful place and if you like down home New Orleans cooking look no further!

MY REVIEW: Born and raised in the New Orleans area, we do know what GOOD New Orleans food is. If you think you are going to get that good New Orleans taste here; forget it.

The seafood gumbo was passable but way over priced ($7/cup); the boiled crawfish were poor, no taste or evidence of crab boil the way it is done in New Orleans. We ordered the Marrero seafood platter (I think that is what it was called) - was pitiful, over priced for what you got. Everything looked and tasted refried and dried up which added up to terrible and tasteless. The catfish was the only thing worth eating. This was a big, big disappointment. We are so sorry we didn't send the seafood platter back and leave. We didn’t even want a to-go-box for what we did not eat to take home for our pet.

As for the service, it was very unprofessional - needs lots of improvement. If you are looking for good New Orleans style food at a reasonable price this is not it. We paid a high price for a bad taste of New Orleans. This was our first and last time there.

MY REVIEW: There are no strong points for this place! My husband and I popped in on a Saturday for lunch. The menu we were given was the lunch (only good Mon-Thur according to the menu) We tried to use a coupon, the woman that seated us coldly told us we could not use that now. We were the only people in there! So sorry you lost our business-permantly!

MY REVIEW: I heard about this place from a co-worker that the owners are from New Orleans and had a very established and successful restaurant there prior to Hurricane Katrina.

We visited on a Saturday evening 9pm. There was a Jazz band playing, which was VERY good and made the atmosphere a lot of fun. I believe his last name was Rochelle, he's an awesome singer. The decor and set up is very nice, there is even a separate banquet room. You can bring your own alcohol at the moment since they are applying for their liquor license.

The menu wasn't very abundant. The prices though were very high for a small venue. Appetizers were $7 and over. We ordered the crab cakes which were very good and spicy, but $12.50. I would say it's worth trying.

I ordered the Crawfish Etouffee, and my husband ordered the Fried Butterfly shrimp. Our entrees came with salad, which was served with ranch dressing. My crawfish etouffee on the menu said it would be served with pasta, but it was actually served with rice, which was fine with me. The etouffee was very fishy tasting. The crawfish was small. It was spicy and was just alright. $16.50, not worth the price and I wouldn't order it again.

My husband's butterfly shrimp was EXCELLENT, had the best breading and very flavorful. 12 pieces for $14.00. I would say it was worth it.

We would return and give it another try as they are adding boudain to the menu (we saw them serving it to another table but they said they'll have it on the menu sooon). We really enjoyed the music and the atmosphere and it's worth giving it another try, I just wish their menu was more abundant and the prices were a $1 or $2 cheaper.

MY REVIEW: This place has food the closest to actual New Orleans, but the prices are very, very steep. Both times I've visited, service has been very slow as were the wait staff. You had to look up and ask for a tea refill. And, our food came out incorrectly. For the price and the amount of time it took to get served (incorrectly), I would go somewhere else for a less expensive and timely lunch.

MY REVIEW: I had a cup of gumbo, and the jambalaya. Both items were very, very tasty and more than i could eat of the jambalaya.

The place is very nicely decorated, was informed of different bands playing in the evening. Good atmosphere, good food. I enjoyed my visit and plan to return, hopefully when a jazz band is playing.

MY REVIEW: I understand this restaurant is very new. My first visit was a pleasant one. I visited the restaurant to listen to the live jazz which was great and I also enjoyed the food. The service was extremely great. I have no complaints, other than I didn't expect a cover charge since I was there for dinner. My food portions were too much for me to eat actually, I had to take a to-go-box. I believe after this restaurant gets off the ground, it may be a nice place to dine.

MY REVIEW: I am from New Orleans and my wife and watched with great anticipation as they began working on this restaurant. Adding to the anticipation was the knowledge that the owners were actually from New Orleans.

The day after the grand opening we called in an order. Two shrimp poor boys - dressed. (That is with lettuce, tomato and mayo.) In New Orleans the shrimp poor boy is a feast. I have never bought one there that was not overflowing with the crispy breaded critters. You can almost make a meal with what falls off the sandwich as you eat it.

So I arrive at the restaurant fifteen minutes after I made the call. That is how long they told me. A half hour after I arrived I received the go boxes and left prepared for a feast. If it's authentic it would be worth the wait. I opened the box and spied the poor boy laying next to cold french fries. I lifted the bread on one and it had two shrimp. The other side had three.

Conclusion: a. The service is poor. b. The portions are miniscule. c. The price is exorbitant. d. The food was just average.

Now you can get poor service and pricey food all over New Orleans. But you won't find these kinds of appetizers being sold as main courses. This place would not survive a week in New Orleans. I do not recommend these imposters to anyone.

MY REVIEW: I tried A Taste of New Orleans last night for the first time. As the previous poster stated, the decor is very nice, lighting awesome, and banquet room colorful and great. I found myself confused with such a nice place serving tea in a plastic tumbler and my tartar sauce in to go containers though...

I would have loved to try an appetizer or soup, but they are extremely over priced. I did opt for a side salad for $4.95 though. It arrived and I thought I was getting their house balsamic vinagrette dressing, but once I poured it on- it was straight balsamic vinegar. Yuk! A wasted $5 unfortunately. The Caesar Side is a whopping $6.50!

I wasn't discouraged yet though because maybe I just misread the menu. I found the menu very limited in comparison with other Seafood or cajun restaurants in the area. I was hoping for some blackened shrimp or something like that, but you can only get fried shrimp unless you want to peel and eat them. There fish selections are also extremely limited- only catfish and salmon.

The Fried shrimp are $14 and come with french fries (standard issue frozen). The portion size was good for the price on this entree as you get 12 shrimp. The breading is different and flavorful. I also contemplated dessert, but there are only 3 to choose from and also extremely over priced.

A Jazz band was setting up to play, but I didn't get to hear them- not sure what time they were to begin. The restaurant doesn't have their liquor license yet, so you cannot hang out, get a drink, and listen to the band yet. This would be a nice later evening date place if they don't over price their drinks as most of the menu is.

I would be willing to return if their prices are more competitive in the future and they enhance their menu selections.

MY REVIEW: The strong points are, the food is great and the decor is very nice. (love the banquet room) The wait staff were also very nice and attentive which I believe is because there were not many people on both occasions, However,...the down side is the price. As most of the others have said, the owners need to either lower the price or put more food on the plate!!!

A friend told me she will be performing there beginning 1/11 for smooth jazz and 1/13 for Gospel brunch. I will be back to hear her. I hope they think about the reviews and put some more food on the plates, otherwise I will eat before I get there. :-)

MY REVIEW: I read the reviews and was anxious to try this place out since I'm new to Katy. I must say the prices are ridiculous ,as stated, and I was expecting more for my money. I ordered the crab finger appetizers and paid 12.50 for the tiniest little things I've ever seen. I probably wouldn't be so mad if I had paid 7 dollars, but for 12.50 I expect much more. My boyfriend had a po boy that ran us ten bucks. I also felt rushed to order, I mean we had never been there and was very surprised at the prices, so we were taking our time. Nice atmosphere, nice staff, but way to expensive. I truly felt ripped off.

MY REVIEW: Tried @ lunchtime. Nice, clean, tastefully, decorated which doesn't affect what comes out of the kitchen - I came for the food. Knew this guys story about trying to start over after Katrina. I went into the gumbo with an open mind - no two gumbo's are alike anyway, and I was looking for a combination of flavors and how it's seasoned. It was excellent! I asked if I could get an Oyster PoBoy w/buttered bread, toasted lightly with ketchup & dill pickles. Unfortunately, it came out dressed which I had to point out to my waitress, but there was no hesitation to redo it. I was impressed that the chef refried more oysters (which were perfectly fried) & gave me a personal apology which shows that this guy wants to develop a relationship and wants me back. No one has french bread like N.O. but his was good quality, light texture and the light toasting helped. I didn't have a problem with the price if the quality is there and I will return to try more of the menu. Had a great conversation with a guy from Baton Rouge who was getting take-out & been there several times.

MY REVIEW: Food is great. A little pricey for the ambiance. Restuarant is very clean. White table cloths would be nice. Going to try it one more time tonight for my final decision on should it be a "my best resturant". Reduce the price on the gumbo and crab soup....very pricey. For the price, restuarant should be more like Bistro 8*29 on Mason.

MY REVIEW: Well I must say that I was impressed with what I saw. There was a live band saturday night and me & my wife enjoyed ourselves very much. The gumbo was excellent, unlike any I have had in Houston. The Corn&Crab Soup was great and so was there seafood platter. It was so much for the price. I would agree about the drinks and I also can't wait until the Jazz club opens. I won't have to go downtown to enjoy myself......

MY REVIEW: Atmosphere is great. Waitress was very sweet and attentive I think her name is Kat. Seafood Pasta is very heavenly especially their garlic bread. The chef is the next big thing in texas/creole/cajun cooking (just watch him in the window this young, big fellow can go). My wife loved the barbecue shrimp. Overall, great restaurant, great services, just wish they had a bar. Cant wait until the jazz club is build.

MY REVIEW: I am afraid I have to agree with the other reviews. Gumbo was $11.50 so I ordered it for my dinner. I have to say that the roux flavor and seasoning was excellent, but for the price, I expected to see some lump crab and some shrimp. I had 3 little shrimp, 3 small crab legs that had been detached from the main body and LOADS of sausage. Sausage in a seafood gumbo should be used to add a smoky accent. It should not be the main event. It was way overpriced for what they served and also for the neighborhood they are in.
