MY REVIEW: The only reason this restaurant will survive is because of its prime location and the fact that there are too few other restaurants on that side of Downtown. I went to The Grove right when it opened, and it was not a bad experience...though I cannot remember what I had. I was more intrigued by my dining partner's skirt steak and chili fries. Undeniably, the interior is striking, though the harsh materials make it loud. My second trip was for happy hour. The cocktails are expensive and forgettable. The ceviche was mediocre and bland. My third trip was for lunch. We sat at the bar for lack of other seating options. The soft-shell crab BLT was excellent and perfectly cooked. The blackeyed pea side was playful, but had too many chipped raw onions in it. My fourth trip was for a dinner last month. I was in the mood for quality dining experience. It started promising enough with an attentive and descriptive waiter. The restaurant was not crowded, but I was irked by the atmosphere. About half of the dining patrons were dressed as if they came straight from the park. If I am going to spend well north of $200 for dinner for two, I do not want to see athletic jerseys, shorts, and flip flops on children and parents. Our initially attentive waiter became impossible to track down. Our food took forever to arrive. My fish dish was good, but ultimately overpriced. The sweet potato side dish (the waiter's recommendation) was heavy and an odd choice for me pair with my fish. My second glass of wine came near the end of my meal. My husband's filet was closer to medium instead of the requested medium rare/leaning toward rare. I doubt I will be going back. There are too many other fabulous restaurants for the same money.

MY REVIEW: Love Discovery Green, had drinks at The Grove early on when it was manic/packed, kept hearing stories about food/service not being what one would expect from the Del Grande Group. Finally went for lunch today and called ahead to ask if we needed a reservation. ASSURED it was not an issue - walked in 45 minutes later and was met with an exasperated sigh from the hostess and got admonished since all the tables were full. What the ??

Ended up at the bar in the interest of time and read the menu through. Thought there would be more on the back and was surprised to realize - that was it. Ok - settled on crab BLT which sounded delicious. Wait a minute - crab came out fried. I don't eat fried food on principle and object that the menu doesn't identify it as such. Decided to eat it anyway and thought the fishiness, combined with tartar and bacon was just a little "odd". Worse though was the cold hamburger-quality bun - turned me off. Lunch date ordered the chicken sandwich and was also unpleasantly surprised that it came with french fries instead of a healthier side - again, not noted on menu. Will go back anytime for drinks and would accept a basic salad, but not interested in putting time or effort into their food.

MY REVIEW: My friend & I had dinner at The Grove tonight. I have to say I agree with all of the earlier reviewers who say that the food is "okay". I had the spicy shrimp salad, and my friend had the wedge salad and the lamb sirloin, and we had the deviled eggs as an appetizer. We both agreed that the food was decent, but neither of us would re-order any of it. I also had the mohjito and the maple manhattan - the mohjito was very tasty but didn't seem to have much alcohol in it - but the manhattan was so sweet it tasted like drinking pure maple syrup. Interesting but I wouldn't get it again. The inside is beautiful, though - I think in the future I will definitely return for cocktails before a night out, but will probably avoid the food - there are so many great places to eat in Houston that I wouldn't spend my $$ on this food again. Also - we ate at the bar and the bartender was very nice & we had no problems with the service.

MY REVIEW: Decor is great however the restaurant is too loud to enjoy your meal. Do NOT order the bacon burger unless you like looking at raw bacon. Drinks were expensive at $12/each and were mediocre. This was the second time I've had a bad experience. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!

MY REVIEW: Do not go without a reservation. Last night my husband called to make a reservation but was told there was plenty of tables available and we would not need a reservation. Upon arriving an hour later, we were told the first available table would be 2 1/2 hours later. Needless to say we did not stay and we are not sure we will ever try to go back.

MY REVIEW: Overall, a disappointing experience, given this was my wife's birthday dinner. Typically, I am not the complaining sort and fairly easy going when it comes to food and service.

Service and food are both average. You will be better off going to Mark's, or any restaurant with a professional waitstaff and food innovation.

1) When we indicated that our party would not be ordering alcohol or wine for the evening, the waitress was visibly disappointed and the service became inattentive, impersonal, and fairly cold for the rest of the evening.

2) The food is average at best. Nothing great and nothing shappy...nothing that you make you want to return and order again. For that type of quality, I would expect to pay $8-$10 an entree, not $25-$30.

3) As my wife had substantial portions remaining, we asked for a take out box. When we got home, we realized the takeout included just the remaining entree. All the sides on her plate were discarded and not included in the take out.

4) Automatic 20% gratuity included on our bill, likely resulting in a non-motivated service delivery; I suppose it's policy but I did not see it anywhere; the level of service was below 20% of pretax bill.

5) No acknowledgement of email complaint to headquarters. I was not looking for compensation, just acknowledgement that they are striving to correct these issues so that other patrons will not have to endure.

The one positive is that the busboys and support staff were very attentive. I would suggest you redirect some of your gratuities to them.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I decided to try it out before a show we were going to see downtown. We were very pleased. The place is very cool and has a nice ambiance. Our service was great and the food was tasty. We ordered the deviled egg app and it was awesome! We split the ceasar salad and the porkchop and man, was that good! We had cappucino and it was one of the best I have had in town. We look forward to going back soon!

MY REVIEW: My co-workers and I had dinner at the Grove. We were encouraged to make reservations as the place tends to get pretty packed. The only positive thing I can say about his experience is that they did not have a wait. The service was extremely slow, it took about 30 minutes for us to get water, ad another 10 minutes for our drinks. I know it is a “green restaurant” and saving energy is important to them, but they should set the AC to at least 75 degrees, the place was unpleasantly hot. The food was average at best. The men’s restroom where quite un-kept. For my money, I can go to any franchise restaurant and have a better dinning experience for a forth of the price.

MY REVIEW: We just made our first visit to the Grove, and my guess is they've addressed whatever issues or inconsistencies that earlier reviewers were complaining about. We had a very nice evening and will definitely visit again. The service was excellent, no complaints. Starters included a cheese course and the ceviche. The latter was good but not traditional, so it may not be to everyone's liking. My wife had the nicose salad for her entree and was very happy with the selection, particularly the freshness of the ingedients. Note that this dish is also not prepared conventionally, but it is clearly described on the menu, so I'm not sure why a previous reviewer was so shocked after ordering it. I had the snapper and it was cooked perfectly.

We have a high opinion of the chef from his previous gig, so we will be anxious to try other dishes on the menu. I would like to think that if there are some clunkers on the menu or in the presentation, it has to do with training new staff and the increased kitchen size that he is now managing. These inconsistencies should be temporary, and we saw no evidence of any of the things that early reviewers complained about.

The decor and setting are fantastic, particularly the view from the Tree House bar upstairs, and I think that it is everything that they envisioned for a restaraunt in this location. It is a great urban setting, and it shows off downtown and the new park beautifully.

MY REVIEW: Strong points: Great atmosphere (huge windows, modern/sleek interior) and great location (in Discovery Green Park). Service, at least for us, was good although the waiter seemed a little inexperienced, he tried hard to please. The menu range was very broad from $12 burgers to $34 steaks. There is a bar in the restaurant and one on the roof, called The Treehouse, which were nice to hang out at after the dinner (although service there was lacking).

Weak points: Food, which is the most important thing, was okay, but they are below the average for this price range ($20-$30/entrees). We had the duck balls appetizer, flank steak, grilled salmon, and chocolate cake. All were okay but not great. Also parking is $8, not free.

Conclusion: I'd go back for brunch or burgers/sandwiches. Not for a nice dinner.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I ate here the day of the Art Car Parade because all the art cars were on display after the parade. This was the first we had heard or seen of Discovery Green park, and we were pleasantly surprised by the general layout. The stone fountain was perfect for children to play in, and there must have been 100 kids running around getting soaked.

We just happened to walk upon The Grove without ever hearing about it. First, the ambiance of the restaurant is excellent. I loved the decor, and it is a perfect place to spend a lazy Saturday because it melded very well with the greenery of Discovery Park which you can see through the ceiling high windows. It was quite crowded for a Saturday afternoon.

I ordered a Mojito and it was enjoyable and gave me a buzz quickly, but the taste of alcohol was disguised well by the bartender. They bring you out some olives and roasted almonds instead of bread, which we both thought was a clever touch. I did not enjoy the olives because they had a licorice flavor, but the almonds were the best I have ever had. Our waiter was not very attentive, and it took him awhile to take our order, bring our food, and bring our check.

My wife got the crab meat appetizer with endive spears and remoulade. She liked it but I thought the crab meat was mediocre because it did not taste very fresh. I ordered a cheese burger which was absolutely delicious. It comes with some kind of roasted pepper on it, and the flavor was amazing. I am a cheeseburger connoisseur and know a good burger when I eat one. The french fries were also excellent and well salted.

Overall, this restaurant is good with the potential of being great if they can get their service and some of the menu items in order. I would recommend it based on the atmosphere, especially for a weekend brunch.

MY REVIEW: my bf and i were excited to try out the grove! but as we walked in...things went downhill. the hostess was horrible! one was on the phone and did not sound very professional, while the other saw us, but proceeded to have a conversation with guests that were leaving (in essence she was flirting!). anyway, we finally sat and the hostess gave us the wrong "lunch special of the day."

next, the server was horrible! i had no idea what kind of drinks they served, so i asked for a drink menu--one that has both soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, but the menu is so poorly designed that it doesn't even have that! so the server just named drinks off the top of his head. we also asked for a dessert menu which was overly priced and did not sound at all too appealing! anyway, we ended up ordering the lunch special for $19 that came with a salad, duck and mushroom rice thingy, and blueberry sorbet. good thing my bf and i shared!!!! it was so not worth it. we didn't finish our portions either.

overall, i would say its a hit or miss. pay a lot more---get good food, pay a little--get no respect. go to the l*akehouse :D we had fun there, casual dining and you can't go wrong for the price you pay!

MY REVIEW: Having read all the horrible reviews, I almost decided not to go out but relented at the last minute because I wanted to check out Discovery Green. I'm glad I went. The place was pretty full at 6:30 p.m., so after prompt attention from the hostess, who suggested the bar because we wanted to eat promptly (all the tables were fill, and we had no reservation), we took two nice comfortable seats at one corner of the spacious bar. The decor and feel are very sleek, and the views of the Green and downtown through the floor-to-ceiling windows are impressive and pleasant.

I had a ginger margarita, which was really good, followed by the duck meatballs (excellent, as even the bad reviews have rightly noted) and the pizzette (which was a small thin pizza with prosciutto and arugula), which was also quite good. My colleague had a glass of pinot noir, the house salad and the herb chicken (sort of a big Provincial-style roasted breast accompanied by a bowl of boiled or roasted potatoes). I didn't try those, but they looked good. For dessert I had the berry cobbler with ginger ice cream (very good as well), and my colleague had a huge piece of good-looking chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream.

The bar service was attentive but unrushed, and the food was delivered at perfect temperature and with proper spacing between courses, and by a polite busboy. I don't know if the busy crowd at the sit-down tables is the source of the problem, or if the kinks have just been worked out since opening, but I experienced none of the problems cited by other reviewers. It is true that it is a bit pricey, and a $7 valet may seem high for some, especially in a city that has lots of free valet in many of its fine restaurants, but I would go back.

MY REVIEW: A couple of good friends made birthday reservations for the four of us on a Thursday evening. This was to be their first visit also. To summarize the evening: A disaster, total let down, appalling food, disgraceful service and $7 to park. I will only dwell on the dinners for my wife and myself. My wife ordered nicoise salad. It had become her favorite after enjoying it several times in Paris. The waiter, surely we must have been his first customers ever anywhere, was unable to explain any detail of the salad. When it arrived my wife and I both stared at the plate which had about five pieces of sashimi-type tuna (ok - I can live with this). She turned over the six or seven pieces of lettuce looking for the anchovies (non-existent) and the diced potatoes (also non existent). Additional flavoring and sasonings were missing. And that was nicoise salad.

From the menu I ordered deliciously sounding seafood stew ($30). I asked my waiter if the base was a bouillabaise or cioppino. He did not know what I was talking about and I gave up trying to give him some sort of description. When the stew arrived I could not believe my eyes. Sitting in about half a cup of warm fishy water were three shrimp, two large scallops, one piece of fish 2" long x 1/4" thick and about 1 1/2" wide. Also a piece of soggy garlic bread that had fallen in the water. Prior to these cullinary delights I had asked the waiter for a dark beer. To which he replied that they did not carry a dark beer. So I ordered a bass ale. 10 minutes later he arrived with a Modelo Negro (a good mexican dark beer). So much for the "we don't carry a dark beer". Throughout the meal we were never offered or brought any breads or rolls.

As the check arrived the waiter wished me a happy birthday. I thanked him thinking that somewhere they could have found a cake with a candle or sparkler or something that would make this meal more memorable than the terrible meal that it turned out to be. We will never go back and will caution our friends to try elsewhere. The restaurant would do well to close down and start again under new management, new staff and a new name, and people in the kitchen who have some idea how to cook.

MY REVIEW: This is my second time eating at The Grove. I crave their Ginger Margarita and must have one each time I visit. I love the appetizers especially the Duck Meat Balls. I could make a meal out of them! Tonight I enjoyed the skirt steak with a delicious sauce that was slightly spicy. The steak was juicy and tender with a fantastic grill taste. The service was prompt and attentive and I look forward to my next visit!

MY REVIEW: This place seems to be a hit or miss but thank god for our large party it was a hit! We were celebrating my husbands birthday and despite of the negative reviews, everyone was eager to try it. I have been here before on my own so I kind of knew what to order. To start, we had no problem with our reservation for 10. I do suggest that you call and confirm a day or two before coming in. I would think most people would have the common sense to do this anywhere when a large party is involved. Some of our guests got lost and didnt show up until 15minutes later. Still, the hostess did not give us any problems and said we could hang out at the bar until everyone showed up. The drinks are a little pricey but what do you expect? Apparently my male guests didnt mind because there were plenty of eye candy to distract them from the bill.

Moving on to dinner, our waitress was great and on top of things even though she had other large tables to attend to. We started off with the duck meatballs(6 per order), devil eggs(6 per order), and a picnic platter (assorted cheese and meat). So far, appetizers were awesome. For the entrees, everyone order differently so we covered the majority of the menu. I would recommend any of the meat but not so much the fish. Some of my guests had to order fish due to lent and were not pleased. My husband had to send his halibut back because it was way too fishy and overcooked. The manager apologized and brought him out a different dish. Others complained that their fish tasted frozen but didnt want to make a big deal about it.

No one complained about their steaks. Besides the fish, the only other downfall would be the rudeness that we encountered upstairs. Our waitress was blunt and didnt seem to want to work on Good Friday. With a barely cracked smile she asked what we wanted and seemed frustrated that what we ordered was only available at the downstairs bar. We decided to make her job easier and leave. Overall, I was pleased that my dinner wasnt a disaster. Hopefully they will fix the fish problem but its definitely a cool place that I would recommend for dates or drinks.

MY REVIEW: We had a great lunch at The Grove. 2 had the shrimp burger and both commented how good it was. I had the oyster blt; big plump crispy fried oysters...very good. We had drinks...maybe a bit overpriced but good. The space is great. The service was a bit aloof but got it done and were helpful with the menu, which is interesting. We'll return.

MY REVIEW: Four of us ate at The Grove last Saturday night for dinner. It was one of the WORST meals I have ever had. Here are the highlights:

1. We arrived 20 minutes early and thought we'd have a drink at the bar. It took 20 minutes to receive our drinks and it was not even that busy. "Julian" the slacker bartender, had to be waved down to give us a wine list and then waved down again to take our order. The latter time, he was off having a lengthy chat with customers seated at the Bar. My boyfriend literally had to get up and walk over to Julian's attention.

2. Within 5 minutes of being seated at our table, our waiter "Steve" announced that he had just gotten over strep throat. (!?!) Gross- visions of him breathing on our food were a little unsettling.

3. My ceviche was nothing more than raw fish swimming in lemon juice. No apparent attempt to season it. Served with stale, room-temperature plantains.

4. My $29 plate of seared tuna was almost inedible. It clearly had been frozen and was an unappetizing greyish color. It was just plain bad. My boyfriend eats anything and everything and he took one bite and scrunched up his nose and pushed the plate back at me. I left more than 1/2 of the tuna on my plate, and Steve the waiter never even asked if anything was wrong with it.

5. My fellow diners had the red snapper w/ Meyer Lemon jam and reported it to be very bland. Another had the deviled eggs as a starter and said they were just "ok".

6. Way overpriced. For the 4 of us, the bill before tip was $190 (and that was with a $29 bottle of wine). For that kind of money, I so wish I had gone to P*esce or T*rulucks!!

7. No choice but to valet park - which is $7.

CONCLUSION: I cannot believe that the Schiller-Del Grande restaurant group would have such a poorly run, poor quality restaurant. I am so irritated that we spent so much money on such awful inedible food! I will never go back and am warning my friends not to go either.

MY REVIEW: I had dinner there last night, arriving at 6:30....Was very disappointed, from the time we walked in until we left. The hostess, was uninviting to say the least. Young girl, without personality or smile. Our waiter, also, was very cold and behaved as he didn't care to be there. I ordered the small filet medium rare, that arrived medium well, and cold. The side potatoes were very dry and tasteless. Menu is way over priced, for the quality of food. The restrooms were also very dirty and reminded me of a service station. This was surprising being so early in the evening.

MY REVIEW: Enjoyed the environment and design of the building. I was dining with a designer friend and we did have fun picking apart some of the design decisions. Overall, we enjoyed the environments especially (and I know a little silly), the menu, bar check, and meal check all coordinated uniquely. We both commented and loved the outside dining area and thought that was a big plus. However, they only had 3 table outside. With that beautiful tree lined area, our best weather of the year, fill the patio area with tables. It was a nice evening, enjoy the weather while we can.

We enjoyed the duck meatballs and carrot soup (this would be better on fall menu rather than spring menu) but very tasty. I had the grits and rotisseri chicken with green sauce. Both were outstanding! The grits were much better than C*atalan's. For dessert we had the cobbler. The ice cream was tasty but the cobbler was bland and tast-less.

My worst comment was about the two hostesses.....both need an attitude adjustment. Not that they were snooty, neither have a clue as to customer service, engaging conversation/comments, or eye contact. They both seemed beat up and defensive. The bar tender was pleasant and had nice wine recommendations.

I/we will return visits and look forward to dining outside during the spring.

MY REVIEW: Interested in trying something new, my wife and I had lunch at The Grove on March 3. The decor and restaurant layout are very nice. The hostess and wait staff were fine as well.

Unfortunately the food was not very good. We had the deviled eggs as an appetizer. They were tasty and proved to be the best thing that we ate. I ordered the Pulled Rotissiere Chicken Sandwich. It was salty and the bread was soggy. I picked at it for a little bit with my fork and gave up on eating the bread. I ate less than 1/2 of the sandwich.

My wife ordered the grilled shrimp burger. It tasted charred on the edges and was otherwise bland. She ate more of her sandwich, but she was disappointed with it as well.

Perhaps because I was still hungry, I ordered the pie squares for dessert. There were two pecan pie and two key lime pie squares. They were both o.k. but nothing special or unique as a dessert for the price. Overall, the restaurant decor, layout and location are very attractive, but the food will keep us away.

MY REVIEW: Very dissapointed with the overall quality of the foood. The salmon salad was uninspiring. A mixture of greens over a small piece of salmon which was somewhat dry. Previously tried the fish and steak. The food came out cold and the fish was dry. Had high expectations from this resturant.

Godd place to hang out at the bar but will stay away from the until they improve the quality of the food and service.

MY REVIEW: The Grove was recommended by The Four Sesaons, where I was staying. The duck meatballs were great...a refreshing new starter in a contemporary restaurant.

The iceberg wedge was wimpy, with a watered-down dressing and rusty lettuce! The salad was hardly worthy of the name "wedge." In fact, it's more like a "shred." The bacon and tomato additions were miniscule and tasteless. The overall salad was poorly presented and apparently, included old lettuce.

The lamb sirloin was absolutely fantastic - spiced and cooked to perfection. The side potatoes - mashed - were recommended by the waiter. They were luke warm and sparingly sprinkled with granules of bacon and chives. There was no flavor to the potatoes whatsoever.

The speciality drink menu was super - very creative and fun.

Overall, the menu is diverse and the atmosphere is adequately interesting, but the service is inconsistent. The waiter charged for the salad, insincerely apologized for its condition and the manager on duty never approached the table (though I asked to see the manager before departing to let him know of the situation). The waiter never made any attempt to "make-good" the impression.

Avoid the booths adjacent to the server entry station..it's very distracting...the wait staff complete their order entry and talk literally next to your table...poor design here.

Consider this place for cocktails and appetizers after work. Maybe the food, and select wait and management staff will evolve with more feedback.
