Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen
Recently named one of Houston's top five new restaurants of 2007

Profile Description: Named one of Houston's top ten new restaurants of 2007, DANTON'S defines what it means to be a TEXAS Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen. Everything is prepared from scratch, and they serve only the freshest Gulf Coast seafood and Black Angus meat. Grilled items are wood-fired over oak and hickory; and the gumbo is cooked for 12 to 18 hours. Owners, life long friends and native Houstonians, Danton Nix and Kyle Teas, have brought something really special to the town!
MY REVIEW: Each time I have visited Danton's, I have experienced different appetizers and entrees - all absolutely delicious. The seafood is fresh and prepared to perfection. I especially love the shrimp tasso - a specialty of the cook! It is a perk to be able to order "off the menu" and they are always happy to create your every wish. The staff is accommodating and knowledgeable of the menu and specials of the day. I have never tasted any white chocolate bread pudding quite like Danton's. It is MAGNIFICENT! My mouth just drools thinking about my next visit!

MY REVIEW: I have been here 3 times. I think the food is generally excellent (gumbo, grilled fish for me) and they are not stingy with their wines ordered by the glass. Each time, the service has been efficient and friendly. However, two things about this place really bug me.
A) The music is TOO LOUD. I can appreciate a "lively" atmosphere but the music is too loud to carry on a conversation. Each time I have been to Danton's, I have had to ask them to turn it down. On one visit, our waiter said that a lot of customers have the same comment/request on the music. One my last visit, the waiter came back and said that they would not turn the music down. he confided that "the owners like it this way and it is their music". I really didn't know what to say to that, but I can tell you I have not been back since.
B) The decor is cheap and fake-looking. I agree with the reviewer Jim A below, however I would have said that Danton's looks more like a R*d Lobster inside with its "nautical" wheels, seafarers ropes, brass railings, etc...

MY REVIEW: Gotta say Danton's has become a staple for us about once a week over the last few months. We sit in the oyster bar - haven't made it into the dining room yet. We love the service (saludos Fallon!) and always give our compliments to the chef.
Pros: Homestyle Food;Great Bar
Cons: None so far
Overall user rating: Highly Recommended

MY REVIEW: I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and I'm glad I finally did. Service - from the hostess to the wait staff - was friendly and efficient. They made me feel welcome even though I was dining solo. And the food was excellent. Salads are fresh (and huge) and the crab cakes I had were well prepared and delicious. The garlic remoulade that came with the crab cakes was superb as well. To top it off, I had a glass of Seven Hands Riesling that went with my food perfectly.
I was expecting a pricier joint, but the prices are actually quite reasonable. My lone disappointment was with the ambience and decor of the place. Frankly, it could be the dining room of a Holiday Inn. The room needs some sprucing up, but not the food -- that's some good chow!

MY REVIEW: I had never been- did not know the owners- but since March 2008 have been 4 times , though we live most of time in NC. The strong point is the passion of the 2 owners to serve 1950's-1960's style outstanding coastal seafood. They are doing what they want to do- make people happy with tasty dishes.
I dont know a weak point yet- I know they must have some, we all do; but those issues just seem to scurry away in the corners when I come in with my family or friends !
The barbequed shrimp are exactly what M*anales' in NO created, and you dont need to go to that storm ravaged, crime ridden town to enjoy the exact same treat.
It is just a fine , old timey place in modern trappings to dine; timeless values, easy smiles because they worked on their recipes for the lover of fresh seafood.

MY REVIEW: A likeable place with some problems. First the good: crab cakes, gumbo, oysters, shrimp remoulade, well spiced boiled shrimp, nice decor and the booths are a plus. Great music. The not so good: service is erratic and seems to suffer from a lack of training and supervision. Our appetizer was served with the gumbo rather than as a seperate course as we had requested. Our waiter semed to want to hurry up the meal although the restaurant was less than half full. He was visibly unhappy when we opted for a meal of appetizers and gumbo rather than an entree. He brought our bill without being asked and stopped by several times to see if the credit card was in there even though we were still finishing our bottle of wine. The lighting in the dining room at night is too bright and destoys the nice effect of the lighting in the booths. All is all, worth a visit if you have moderate expectations. Goode Company still sets the standard in seafood in Houston.

MY REVIEW: I am from New Orleans and being here 3 years now, Danton's is much like my experiences at restaurants back home and then some. From the friendly owners that are very interested in your opinion and take the constructive comments to heart, to the very cute and all so helpful wait staff to the awesome cocktails and well prepared dishes with just the right originality. Also, let's not forget the decor of the restaurant with the family and friends photos showing just how long these co-owners have been close friends. And last but not least the desserts are wonderful...my favorites are the peanut butter pie and key lime pie, if you have room for something sweet. Danton's is what reminds me of good neighborhood casual dining and a notch above.

MY REVIEW: The food was delicious.. the oysters very good and fresh. The crabfingers are recommended. The selection of fresh fish was good. I just wish our waiter would have been more on the ball. I hate that when you are paying good money.

MY REVIEW: From the perfectly cold light pink cosmo to the icy cold plump oysters to the Caesar salad (an included side!) with creamy garlicky dressing to the fluffy crunchy house rice to the moist fresh grilled slightly smoky redfish to the informative and attentive but not overbearing wait staff to the friendly and genuinely interested in what I think owner-- the experience was one of the best. And the temperature of the restaurant was NOT the deep freeze that Houston restaurants feel obligated to provide for our dining pleasure, Danton's is a comfortable affordable must visit again and again. And the TUNES were fabulous--downright New Orleans bluesy ambience...

MY REVIEW: Simply put, Danton's is the best New Orleans style seafood restaurant in Houston. I have eaten there at least 10 times in the last few months.
The gumbo, oysters, crawfish, and crab are superb. The wine list excellently complements such dishes as the oysters. I don't know where these people get their oysters but they are the juiciest and best tasting around. I get them raw but also in cooked preparations. The crawfish, nicely spiced, are also the best tasting and flavored. The setting for this cajun seafood restaurant is also stylish and modern: not at all what most cajun seafood restaurants look like. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly--they seem like friends you have known for a long time. All in all, a SUPERB restaurant and one not to be missed!

MY REVIEW: Outstanding! Fresh! Friendly! A few words that come to mind after my recent visit to Danton's. Everything we ate (and we ate plenty) was extremely fresh. The oysters on a half shell were, hand down, the best I have had in Houston. They were big and fresh. The oysters kyle was also amazing. I had the stuffed flounder special for dinner. My husband had the stuffed shrimp and a cup of gumbo. The roux was dark and it was packed full of seafood. We didn't stop there, the chocolate bundt cake is delicious. If you are like me and love dessert, but nothing too rich or sweet, than this is the perfect choice.
Not only was the food great, what sealed the deal on many return trips to come, was the friendly service. We sat in the bar to have oysters and a cocktail with the intention of moving to the dining side, but after Ashley (bar manager) gave such great service, we decided to stay in the bar for our entire meal.
You are likely to catch the owners Danton (mostly in the kitchen) and Kyle (mostly at the bar) in the restaurant. Stop in and say hi. I love a restaurant where the owners/top chef are present and approachable. They definitely have something to be proud of.

MY REVIEW: I had high hopes for Danton's based on all of the reviews. My husband and two kids tried it on a Saturday night. I liked the look of the place and the service was great. However, I was dissapointed in the food. The flavor of the oysters on the half shell was dilluted by water from the ice. The grilled redfish was overcooked, but the house rice was very nice. We thought the gumbo was ok, but not really anything special. The fried shrimp were good, but again, nothing special. All in all, I guess I was expecting all of the food to be great based on the reviews and prices. G**de Co. Seafood is just as good if not better and is closer to home for us.

MY REVIEW: Very nice upscale atmosphere, with super attentive staff. We had 2 waiters (one was a trainee) and they were both friendly and helpful.
Ordered the gumbo, stuffed jalapenos, and the debris sandwich. The gumbo was very good. Really dark and rich, but a bit overpriced around $10 a bowl. The stuffed jalapenos (cheese and crab) were tasty and came with a nice remoulade, but the cheese overwhelmed the crab. I would skip these and go for crab fingers or something similar.
The debris sandwich was fantastic! It was a bargain at $8.95. I understand they have a soup and sandwich plate. 1/2 debris and 1/2 gumbo, awesome combo. You have your choice of sides with the sandwich, and I chose poorly. The french fries were subpar, but I wasn't there for the fries. I was surprised they did not have potato salad, since that really goes with gumbo.
I will absolutely return!

MY REVIEW: My wife and I were starving on Saturday night, so we decided to go to Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood. We were blown away by how good the food was. We got in fairly early at around 6:00, and it was fairly busy. It never got too busy though, and we got plenty of attention from our server and even one of the two owners of Dantons.
We started with boiled crawfish, then two cups of gumbo, two caesar salads, and I had the stuffed flounder that was featured that evening. My wife had the fried shrimp entree with wonderful fresh cut french fries and a tangy cole slaw. My stuffed flounder was the best thing I tasted on the menu, and beautifully plated with some whipped yams and sauteed vegetables. Everything was wonderful, and we capped the evening off with some key lime pie and two Irish coffees. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. We will be back soon. I'm so happy it opened right down the street

MY REVIEW: I absolutely love the crab bisque, or the crawfish bisque which is on special right now...but don't forget to order some garlic bread with that to soak up the sauce. I've done most of my raw oyster eating in Louisiana...but the fresh Galveston Bay oysters served at Danton's are nothing short of delicious. The wait staff is personable and the bartender's are a lot of fun if you decide you want a good meal while you watch the game. There's no complaints on my end...just wish they were open on Sunday's.

MY REVIEW: I went to Danton's for gumbo. HOWEVER, once I looked at the printed menu I saw something that's not on their website ... Oyster Stew. That's something I've been seeking for years! My father used to make it a very long time ago and I've never seen it on a menu.
Danton's Oyster Stew is wonderful ... cream with oyster liquor that gives it a rich oyster flavor. The cup has three whole oysters which must be added when ordered because the oysters are cooked perfectly.
I also tried their fried oysters and just as impressed. Crunchy batter surrounding a moist perfectly cooked oyster. The seasoning does not over power the delicate oyster flavor.
Today, I decided to go back and had both the oyster stew and the gumbo. The stew was just as good as before and the gumbo was dark and rich. I prefer it without okra and there was none. I still prefer the oyster stew and will return for more of it and more fried oysters.

MY REVIEW: Our visit started out great -- the restaurant has a very nice interior and the staff was welcoming. The appetizers were excellent; boiled shrimp, BBQ shrimp (almost as good as New Orleans) and the best fried crawfish tails I have ever had! After that, though, the service fell off, often leaving us looking for our waiter for a while, almost impossible to get another drink, wine or water refills. The gumbo, in no way, comes even close to its reviews. The entree of crab baked with parmesian, etc. had WAY too much garlic, ruining the entire dish.
Overall, though, the restaurant was inviting enough that I would try it again. Sitting in the oyster bar or at the bar counter in the dining room looks like the way to go!

MY REVIEW: Good first visit. Restaurant looks the part of a seafooder with lots of nautical pictures and art everywhere. Lots of warm wood on the walls and comfortable booths as well as tables. I wanted the oyster bar but it was full at 7 pm on a Thursday...dining room less busy. Looked like an expense account place, but most of the diners seemed 'local' and the prices were moderate. Had a dozen oysters--fresh, briny, cold, and delicious...maybe a bit watery. Had the stuffed shrimp which was four big ones full of tasty crabmeat stuffing. All the seafood items seemed to be Gulf staples, but the menu isn't very long, especially on varieties of fish. Good service and big parking lot.

MY REVIEW: OMG!!! The oysters on the half were fabulous, fresh and plump. The waiter didn't know where they were from- I bet from San Leon, Galveston area. They had that fresh, briny, clean, sea flavor. Not rinsed with tap water, a method that irks me to no end. Rinse the outside. Fine. Don't rinse the inside please. The bbq'd oysters were pretty good too. The gumbo had a dark earthy roux that is indicative of a chef that knows his gumbo. Could've used some more seafood in the gumbo though. The dirty martini was perfect, albeit slow. We came for the appetizers and cocktails. Next time we'll have dinner too. The bar looks like a good place to par-tay!

MY REVIEW: Have had several business lunches at Danton's, and clients appreciated the ambience, food and New Orleans' tunes.
Access from 59 via Richmond is quick, and free valet helpful on one rainy day. Another day I got stuck in traffic; called the Maitre'd who had seated my client and explained my predicament by the time I got there.
The Campechana appetizer is wonderful, with enough for 3 or 4 to share. The gumbo is as good as any I have tried. I enjoyed the grilled red fish most of all; very fresh and not floating in sea of sauces. Sides of okra and tomatoes (new to me) which were not cooked to death; coleslaw, which was super, and red beans were all worth writing home about.
Chocolate cake dessert was moist, very chocolaty and popular.
Wine list is a brief, but good selection, and well priced.
Will be back soon!

MY REVIEW: The fried oysters were the best I've ever had - fried to perfection: not too bready, not soggy, not too spicy just golden and tender. I'd also recommend the crab salad called the Danton Salad - you won't be disappointed.

MY REVIEW: We were really looking forward to eating Dan Nix food again since its been some years since we had a chance to do so. Certainly the highlight of the evening was the stuffed redfish. It was a good sized portion and was absolutely delicious. The rice side with pecans and green onions was also very good. However, I paid extra for the onion rings as a side and was sorely disappointed. They're really nothing special.
Our server recommended the crab Danton appetizer. It was okay but we sure didn't taste any of the advertised garlic that was supposed to be in it. The fried shrimp were good - but not special.
We agree with previous reviews that the service was slow and the wine markup is high. Also, they appear to use one size wine glass for all wines and fill them up too high. This was just an observation as we tried the frozen margaritas they said they had. These were made in a blender - not a margarita machine. If they had told us that beforehand, we would have just had them on the rocks. Speaking of the servers, they are quite friendly but appear to be overly enthusiastic about everything on the menu. We could hear them extolling the virtues of everything which wasn't quite true. It more be more helpful if they could say what they like best and why. When you're trying a restaurant for the first time, you want help - not a cheerleader for the establishment.
The background music and setting are nice. They do have valet parking.
One last observation - they don't serve bread with the meal but will provide crackers. If you're going to try to compete in this market, some sort of bread would be a good offering.

MY REVIEW: They are open Saturday for lunch, which gets a plus from me, so we tried them...the drive out for two, including the unnecessary valet, was $90, which included one glass of wine and one martini. The food was very good and there was plenty of it, but we made it easy, fried fish and fried shrimp. That remoulade sauce is excellent. Appetizer, soup and dessert all excellent. Service was adequate and the atmosphere was quiet. Only negative was the martini, it was not "dry" nor was it ice cold and the gin selection was limited.....it is never a good sign when the waiter becomes the bartender. I expect to go back and this time stay away from the fried choices, just too filling.

MY REVIEW: Review by Annabeth below is absolutely correct. Most places smother the seafood so much you can't even taste the featured product...not at Danton's. The seafood is the freshest I've ever had and the gumbo is to die for. I'll be back again and again.

MY REVIEW: One weak point was the wine service; very average list, and a healthy mark-up. And the kicker: they serve wine in small glasses and fill them close to the brim. To some, that says 'good value', to those who drink wine it says 'no clue'. Will try again, but wasn't overly impressed with the food.
