Cafe Pita +

The cafe looked right… It sounded right, with lively Balkan tunes... Most of all,
the cafe felt right - Alison Cook

Profile Description: Cafe Pita+ was established in 2006 by two friends Omer and Slobodan(Bobo) with the idea of introducing Bosnian cusine to Houston which is a great fusion of Turkish, Greek and Italian food with a touch of Slavic influence. All our dishes are made daily in house from the freshest ingridents such as home made "filo" dough, fresh baked "lepinja" bread(a cross between a pita and focaccia bread), and succulent lamb shank to name a few. Come and try for yourself, "We promise you won't be dissappointed!

MY REVIEW: One of the best places to eat. I really like the Cevap and the Lepinja bread (reminds me of English crumpets).

A bit crowded, especially at lunch times - due to its great food. Evenings can also have a wait time.

MY REVIEW: Finally made it here for supper. Service was great and food was outstanding. The fried anchovy appetizer was fabulous. BYOB and sadly, no air conditioning. However, with the fans on and door opened it was not uncomfortable at 8pm on a Saturday. I'm anxious to go back and try more!

MY REVIEW: i love the cevaps...very tasty. since i am from the "balkans" i was so excited to have a restaurant in houston to help me feel at home. the only complaint i have is that i ordered crepes (or palacinke) with Eurocrem and they put Nutella. lol but they were still delicious!!

MY REVIEW: We went on personal recommendation of Sunset M's review below. This place is superb example of the wonderful diversity of cuisine we enjoy in Houston. Having never experienced Bosnian food, we were looking forward to it.

The filled pastry appetizers (one meat, the other with spinach/cheese) were so delicious. Pastry was buttery, crispy on the outside, and filled with perfectly seasoned fillings. These were HUGE! We definitely overordered.

"Meat lovers pizza" (do not be fooled by the name, although meaty, this is not something from pizza hut) was wonderful, if a bit salty from all the toppings. Aged ham, sausage, pepperoni with just a bit of onion for sweetness. Not sure what kind of cheese it was topped with, but the flavor was nutty and sweet. Crust was again tender and crispy.

The lamb shank was served with roasted vegetables and buttery white rice. Unfortunately the meat and potatoes were chilled in the center. They obviously braise this slowly in advance, but had not reheated it properly. This dish was rather bland. I don't know Bosnian cuisine to know what is correct for a dish like this. I was sorry we hadn't opted for the waiters recommendation of the daily special which was a roasted lamb dish.

We were stuffed, yet ordered the baklava. This is NOT a greek baklava. The filling had different seasonings and probably walnuts? (Not pistaciho.) They tout their homemade phyllo pastry which would be great except they put the finished dessert in the refrigerator to keep it fresh as long as they can. What should be flaky crisp delicate layers of pastry turned into sopping wet gloop.

Some of the dishes were executed flawlessly. Others need rethinking. Either way, the prices are shockingly low, portions are huge, and the overall effort so earnest that I can't wait to go try more things.

Bring a little patience and your own bottle of wine. There was one very busy waiter serving the entire small dining room. That said, our food came out in a reasonable time frame.

MY REVIEW: I have gone tho this place 3 times in two weeks. The saturday night dinner we had two weeks ago was so incredibly delicious that I have gone back twice for lunch with work collegues. EVERYONE loves it...meat eaters love the meat pizzas and lamb shank and kabaobs. The vegetarians love the veggie pizza's fred cheese and various apps and salads. The bread that is served with a tangy "butter" is so good. The place is shockingly inexpensive. Please don't miss.

MY REVIEW: My friend and I went for dinner on a Monday night. We were greeted and seated immediately. The owner came over and we asked him to choose for us since we had never had Bosnian food before. For starters we received the fried anchovies with the red pepper dip and the feta cheese plate with olives, tomatoes, olive oil and spices. We loved every bite and asked for more of the fabulous bread. For our second course we had the stuffed cabbage rolls that were perfectly seasoned and then came the wonderful pizza with a beef sausage, smoked beef and mushrooms on a great homemade crust. For dessert we had the rice pudding with caramel sauce (might ask for it warmed next time) and the baklava. Everything we had was delightful and tasty, even their version of lemonade, which had a hint of grapefruit. I love it! When you are there, Omer, Viviana & Steve take great care of you!! It was my first visit of many!!

MY REVIEW: We went for lunch, having seen positive reviews from Alison Cook and Rob Walsh. My spouse and I shared the fried cheese appetizer, which was delicious - four good sized pieces, lightly fried in breadcrumbs with a red pepper puree for garnish. I had the cevapi, a house speciality, which is a sandwich of kofte-style sausages in puffy, soft bread. Once again, delicious, and a generous portion too. My spouse had a stuffed version of the same thing, with a beef filling. It tasted remarkably like a cornish pasty (a great treat for us Brits!) and she enjoyed every bite. We shared a piece of home-made baklava for dessert. It was similar in appearance to what you might get at any Middle Eastern restaurant, but was much less sweet and had more nuts. I really liked it - sometimes baklava is so sweet you can feel your teeth decay as you eat it, but not this one.

Weak points - I tried a Macedonian beer but won't again - it was like a cloudy budweiser. My spouse had a coffee but it had been sitting in the pot for too long and was undrinkable.

We'll certainly go back and take friends, too.

MY REVIEW: What a gem! I've never had Bosnian food before going to Cafe Pita, so I can't compare or guage "authenticity"--but who care's when the food is so tasty and interesting you can't wait for the next bite. We started out with the mixed appetizer--peppers, cheeses, and cured meat--terrific! And the fresh baked bread will make you abandon your low-carb diet forever. The night we went there was a lamb shank special that was out of this world. The Turkish will grow hair on your chest. It's BYOB, but don't worry if you forget to bring a bottle--a liquor store is next door. The strip mall facade leaves something to be desired (and you have to kinda hunt for the restaurant). But once you're inside, you'll be taken care of by a very friendly and attentive staff, and you're taste buds will thank you!

MY REVIEW: I really enjoyed Cafe Pita. Lunchtime was busy, with a very large group in this very small restaurant. Seeing the large group, I was afraid we would be in for a long wait. However, service was efficient and friendly. We had the eggplant dip for appetizer and the cevap for main dish. The food was very good - the bread different and delicious, and the beef & lamb sausages in the cevap were perfectly seasoned, tender, and flavorful. For under $20, we had a very fulfilling and unique meal, with leftovers to take home for dinner! I will definitely be back to try other dishes.

MY REVIEW: My first visit to a Bosnian place, came all the way from Beaumont, I already love Lebanese & Turkish cuisine, so I also love Bosnian take on cuisine. I tried the Cevap on the lepinja bread, with 8 fresh grilled Cevap link sausages on the delicious homemade bread with sides of chopped onion, ajvar (roasted red pepper puree), and kaymuk (goat cheese like spread) it was all good. Next time I will try the kebabs or the pljeskavice burger. The place was small and charming, good service, and a very beautiful dark haired lady serving the food, so everything is all good. I will be back.

MY REVIEW: Just one visit but my wife and I will be back. I had the what I think was called cevapi (sausage sandwich). It was fantastic and it was filling. My wife had the bean soup - she said it was excellent. I tore off some of the very special bread and wrapped it around a sausage for her to try. She loved that as well. Cafe Pita + is not speedy because the food is cooked when ordered. The air conditioner was not doing a good job of keeping the place cool. Never the less, we will be back soon.

MY REVIEW: Tried this over the weekend based on the newspaper review. Really nice in all aspects. First of all, they had the Bremen-Bayern game on their TV. Second, the mixed appetizer were a great value and offered a nice spread of Balkan food, pickled peppers, hams, cheeses and a great tasting eggplant (?), red pepper dip. All served with the best bread in Houston. The same bread was also used for the main dish, ground beef grilled nicely, and if you like, filled with cheese, mushrooms and more peppers. Very tasty.

Will I be back? Absolutely, great food, friendly service, good prices and German soccer on TV. What more can one ask for?

MY REVIEW: This cafe is a true gem on Westheimer - a perfect place to bring your friends for lunch, family for dinner or throw a birthday party. I've tried all three and received excellent service and superb food every time.

As authentic as it gets, this cafe is definitely a MUST TRY. Food is homemade, fresh, delicious and affordable.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I went and we have to say the food it great as well as a nice change from typical "Greek” style cuisine (this restaurant being Bosnian and the only one in Houston!).The Cevap is their signature dish and is a must try (The Lepinja bread served with this is like pita bread but is hand made daily and VERY good) but we also ordered a variety of other things and all was good! The restaurant itself is small, cozy, casual place and the outside sitting will be great come warmer weather returns. We found the atmosphere to be very friendly and with some native speaking Bosnians eating and working there it completes the feeling like you’re dinning in an Eastern European cafe. We also must note that this singular unique food variety coupled with the fact that everything on the menu is hand-made fresh daily (no frozen food at all) it is a must try for everyone!

MY REVIEW: Excellent place for all "cevap" lovers from Balkans, just opened. They also have pitas and "burek", that I haven't tried myself, but they also seem authentic. The setting is ordinary, it's just a small cafe, which fits the type of food they are serving. Crepes were also excellent for dessert!
