Mi Sombrero Restaurant
3401 N Shepherd Dr, Houston, Texas 77018
MY REVIEW: The food here is a carbon copy of their sister restaurant, El R*anchero, in LaPorte, and that's a good thing! Flavor, every bite is packed with it. The garlickly rice and lard infused beans are the best. I'm sick & tired of places that serve rice & beans with absolutely no taste whatsoever; but, hey, that's just me--if you don't like garlic in your rice or lard in your beans, then don't bother to go to Mi Sombrero. Just keep going to those places where the food is so tasteless and so bland that you have to keep adding salt at the table until you acheive some level of "flavor".
Same with their beef enchiladas--lots of flavor. Some of the best around, but another favorite restaurant is nearby Don J*ose, and I put Mi Sombrero just a hair above the excellent beef enchiladas, rice & beans at Don J*ose. Folks on the NW side are fortunate to have these 2 Mexican restaurants. Hard to believe it's been more than 3 years since anyone reviewed Mi Sombrero!

MY REVIEW: Wow. After reading the reviews I was expecting a quant little place with good local food. Thats not what we got on our visit on a Sunday morning. There were long lines, people having to clean thier own tables because the waitstaff werent doing it, and the lady who did bus a few tables also brought out the chips/salsa and drinks.
Our order was messed up, we never got our coffees, and our son got scrambled instead of fried eggs (and we speak spanish, so there wasnt a language issue. No one filled our water glasses wither and the milk tasted off.
The huevos mexicana and migas were bland, the beans a little strange tasting, and the french fries were still frozen in the middle.
I didnt understand the crowds because it wasnt that good -- i left with heartburn and still hungry
But as a plus, they offer free ice cream :)

MY REVIEW: Stopped by after reading previous review. The outside could use a little sprucing up, but once you get inside totally nice. Went with my mom for a early dinner. I had the fajita taco dinner while mom had the #3 enchilada dinner. Both meals wee good no complaints here. Mom also had ice cream, which is free(?) I think. Plan on going for breakfast soon.

MY REVIEW: I have found this place in the few months and now eat there at least twice a week! We love this restaurant! Authentic, home-cooked, Mexican food. Everything I have ordered is delicious.
Breakfast: get the breakfast enchiladas or the huevos a la Mexicana with cheese.
Dinner: Get the Tommy Tacos or the #6 Carne Guisada..MMM!!! Best in town!
The waitstaff is very friendly and always attentive. This place is a new staple of my diet!

MY REVIEW: Very good place to eat homecooked Mexican food. This is a small mom and pop place located on the corner of 34th and Shepherd. It is very clean and the waitstaff is friendly (not fluent in english, but who cares, the food is great). I think their enchiladas are the best I've tasted. I also like the more traditional Mexican food, such as Carne Guisada, Carnitas Rancheras, Menudo, and Queso Flameado.
In the mornings I usually have the Huevos Rancheros or Chorizo con Huevo; both plates come with hand sliced potatoes (none of that frozen store bought stuff) and homemade refried beans. And if that weren't enough, they also make thier own flour and corn tortillas - you can't go wrong with that.
I have also fallen in love with the Tommy Tacos. I can't believe they are so simple and so good. Fajita with onions, jalapenos, and chile-con-queso on top. Then again, anything is good with queso on top.
I highly recommend this place.

MY REVIEW: Cheap prices, good food. Small place, not the greatest ambiance but definitely worth a try. Breakfast is also good. I like the potatoes & eggs with beans. Salsa is good, so are the chips. You even get chips at breakfast. Sometimes its crowded, other times medium crowd. Wait staff is attentive. No bar, but you can order beer.
