MY REVIEW: I was excited to find a new Latin restaurant near work. So many of the places I've loved have folded. I wasted no time stopping by for lunch.
Strong points: The Ropa Wrap (and the Ropa Vieja contained therein) was excellent. High marks in flavor and value. Needed something more than boring fries as an accompaniment but that is just nit-picking.
The Pastelitos de Guayaba y Queso was simply off the charts delicious. Worth a visit just to try these.
Fresh made Mariquitas de Plátano(plantain chips)served with a Guava Salsa and a mojo/cilantro sauce concoction. A welcome change from tortilla chips and very good sauces.
Weak points The Nuevo Cubano was simply ok. They put their own spin on it with the addition of Guava and dijon. It's not that it tasted bad, it was simply smaller than I would have expected, not flattened and lacked the zip of the prepared mustard. I like my Cuban sandwich flattened with traditional ingredients. Fair mark in flavor, low mark in value.
Service. To be fair, they are newly opened in Willowbrook. But the management needs to do more to help the waitstaff be more prompt. They were all friendly, but lacking in good time management. I would expect this to improve.
Empenadas de Maduros. Whoever is cooking the Maduros needs to be taught the proper way to select and prepare sweet plantains. These were hard, not at all sweet, and starchy. This was a major disappointment. I used to get these at a small Honduran place that is no longer around, and they were incredible.
Overall though, definitely worth more visits. If they get the service up to par and get the maduro preparation correct this will be a great addition to the area.

MY REVIEW: For you Katy dwellers, or people of Houston visiting the Katy area. The misses and I visited this wonderfull latin grill Saturday night with some friends; Guayaba Latin Grill. We were told by some friends that went with us that both times they previously visited there was a live band; not this Saturday.
Anyways, I had the Pernil Con Salsa de Pina with the suggestion that it is a very GOOD dish, and it is. The misses had the Pernil con Asado de Guayaba and she enjoyed her’s as well. By looking at the drink menu I think there specialty is the Mojito because it took up 2/3 of the menu, So, I got a Strawberry Passion Mojito. THAT was tasty. We finished the night off with Empanadas de Maduros; DELISH!!!
For a relaxed environment and a good time with a group of friends, this is the place to go. Not much in the form of decoration and location but the food makes up for it. They would probably get more business if they relocated to the Westgreen Park shopping center since this center is just north of I-10 and Westgreen, rather than being located less than a mile north of I-10 at Park Row on Westgreen. According to their website they have a new location opening soon in Willowbrook.

MY REVIEW: The food here was delicious. My husband and I loved it. There were two things that weren't good but not enough to make this a bad place. The waiter forgot to bring us our waters and when you first drive up it's really hard to tell if the restaurant is open or closed. We will be back for sure.

MY REVIEW: Last Fri Night we decided to visit this restaurant, because a friend of ours told me about the great food and great music. She was ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!! Starting with the waiters, they were very courteous, friendly and answered all my questions about certain dishes we did not know what they were. I enjoyed the ceviche.... and the tilapia......hmm delicious....the margaritas....just like we like them....so we decided to stay a little longer and enjoyed the wonderful music variety of a three piece band . They played all our requests. Summarizing.....we had a great time and we will return.
PROS: Great Food, Great Service, Great Music
Cons: Needs More Ventilation, sometimes the onion & garlic smells are way too strong (perhaps an extra vent will help) But overall....Very Good!

MY REVIEW: My wife and I had our 4th visit last night, and the visits get more and more wonderful. The staff is attentive and courteous, the drinks well mixed, the food has all the extra touches, and the desserts are decadent without being overly sweet. They even have a really well designed website for their size.
We got to try the Sunday brunch last weekend and it was fantastic. The grilled tilapia, empanadas, crispy potatoes and eggs are just of few of the items worth mentioning. I seriously recommend dropping into this place for brunch, lunch, and dinner.

MY REVIEW: Guayaba Latin Grill is a good restaurant to visit if you have the time, because the service can be a bit slow. I feel this is not due to negligence, but maybe a bit of inexperience. The staff is very friendly and courteous, they were perfectly willing to take care of any request.
The food is quite good: the chicken empanadas are light and packed with flavor, and the fajitas are tender and ample. The pork tenderloin glazed with guava nectar, served with a side of white rice and tropical fruit slaw (a very interesting combination of purple cabbage and grapes and plums?) were capped off with a small amount of fried plantains. This place reminds me of the fusion restaurant Red O*nion Cafe, if you've ever been there, Guayaba's food is very similar, but the prices here are much more affordable.
Live music on the weekends can be fun, but it is LOUD, so don't plan on any romantic whispering on these nights!

MY REVIEW: I've never been to this restaurant and decided to pay a visit on Friday January 19 2007. This place is a hidden paradise in all aspect. The food was delicious, We both ordered some shrimp and tostones, and also ceviche and these plate were wonderful, the waiters/waitresses, served us promptly and were very courteous. So we decided to stay to listen to the music and to our surprise there is a three piece latin band that made us dance all night. They were tremendously good. I have not heard this type of good live music in a long time. All I have is good comments for guayaba grill. They could use an extra air extractor. Other that that, food, drinks, music and staff were A-1 > Keep it up!!! and my compliments to the Guayaba Grill Chef and to the management.

MY REVIEW: My wife, Son and I ate dinner at this restaurant last week. This is probably the best restaurant in the Katy area. If you pass it up because of it’s location in a strip center then you are making a great mistake. I have eaten there three times and have never been disappointed. The service is great, with a friendly staff that welcomes you and makes you feel at home. If you are unfamiliar with the dishes they are happy to explain them to you and make recommendations.
My wife had empanadas and stuffed jalapeño peppers, my Son had the Pescado a lo Macho and I had the Pollo Guayaba. The portions are large and I took half of mine home for lunch the next day. Everything tasted great, arriving at our table promptly. You could tell the ingredients were fresh and the presentation was pleasing. Obviously those of us in the Katy area have found a gold mine in this small eatery.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I are frequent restaurant diners who enjoy a good meal. "Gourmet cooking" is one of my specialties. We had driven by Guayaba on many occasions and decided to go there for dinner the other night. It was a very pleasant experience! The plantain chips and guayaba and chimichurri dips were excellent, placed on the table within minutes of our arrival. I ordered a grilled shrimp dish with minced garlic overlay, which was excellent, and my husband ordered a pulled-beef dish, which was outstanding! The presentations were beautiful, mine with rice, grilled julienne vegetables, fried plantains and a delicious black bean soup; my husbands came with black beans and a very interesting rice dish. We left there completely satisfied! One other item I'd like to mention is that Guayaba's is definitely Latin in menu and atmosphere! The only other place we've been to in Houston that would compare with Guayaba's is C*hurrascos (which is a 35-minute drive and much pricier!!) -- which means for us it will be Guayaba's!

MY REVIEW: I went to Guayaba for the first time a couple of weeks ago, & i've been back several times ever since. I've been to many restaurants but i have to say that Guayaba has the best latin food in town. Their empanadas are to die for. I promise you that if you order the empanadas, you'll be addicted. The crust is flakey and the beef filling has just the right spices and leaves a wonderful taste in your mouth. My favorite main dish is the Pescada Guayaba. The mahi mahi is grilled to perfection and topped with a delicious cream sauce. What actually brings me back each and everytime to this restaurant is their Cafe Con Leche. It comes in a cup as big as a bowl and the aroma comes from a bean that captures how coffee should smell and taste. Guayaba also makes their own flan with a coconut twist. Each time you come in you get a basket of fried plantaines & chimichurri sauce. Can you believe it that they have a worker that just peels and slices plantaines? This place is awesome & i recommend it to anyone! Oh did i mention that they have a latin band on the weekends?

MY REVIEW: Like the poster below, I live very close to Guayaba, and have seen it on a daily basis throughout the months as it was being constructed. I was very excited to see a "latin grill" in Katy (as opposed to just another "Mexican restaurant"). I will admit, however, that every time I have driven by since they opened, the place seemed almost empty, and that made me a bit apprehensive. Finally, this Saturday, my sister and I decided to give it a try.
From the outside, it looks as if it might be cramped inside the dining area, but it turned out to be quite spacious. The restaurant was in pristine condition (no sticky floors/tables/chairs), with sparse yet interesting décor, and latin music played at a comfortable level. I also feel that it is worth mentioning that their chairs are quite comfortable. There were 3 other parties dining at the time (this was about 2:45pm), and the waitstaff was attentive, quick, and courteous. After having dined at Guayaba, I now believe the reason they appear to be so empty is their service is so prompt. I noticed they had a constant flow of customers, but due to their rapid response the parties don’t pile up in the restaurant all at one time.
Anyway, the atmosphere was great, but the food was better. For starters, you receive a plate of fried plantain slices with both guayaba (a sweet fruit with a little kick) and chimichurri (spicy/tangy) dipping sauces. Even though I believe they were deep-fried, they were surprisingly light (much lighter than tortilla chips and salsa). My sister and I were so enamored that we requested more plantains (free of charge, of course) and guayaba sauce to accompany our meals. She ordered the steak quesadillas and I had the chicken fajitas. Both were large potions, but the fajitas were particularly impressive. They serve it on “skillet” common at most restaurants, and the thing was literally piled high with onions, red and green peppers, and an incredible amount of deliciously tender chicken. I am a big eater, and I was only able to eat half without becoming full. This was accompanied by freshly made toasted (!) flour tortillas, a unique take on Spanish rice, borracho beans, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. I mention this because these were all included with the meal, whereas many other restaurants charge extra for many of the items listed above. Even their iced tea had great flavor.
I could probably write another 3 paragraphs about this place, but I’m at work, and need to wrap it up. Suffice it to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. There were so many interesting items on the menu that I know I will be back many times (with friends). If you are looking for something unique yet familiar, this is your place. I agree with the other poster that this place is reminiscent of Red O*nion, but if my memory serves, the pricing is more modest at Guayaba. Most entrees range from $7 - $10 with salads and soups being closer to the $5 - $7 range.
Give it a try. This place deserves success.

MY REVIEW: I live about a mile away from Guayaba and I discovered it back in October but it was not open yet. Since then, I have been passing by it at least once a week waiting for them to open. Imagine my happiness when right after New Years I passed by and saw them open. Last night, my husband, my 17 month old daughter and I happily headed on over. I am from Nicaragua and I am always looking for great Latin food like that which I grew up with. In the past, I had to travel all the way out to C*hurrascos and Red O*nion but now I am so happy to say I found a great new restaurant close to home!
The atmosphere was really nice and they had music playing at an appropriate level where you don't have to scream to be heard (the owner told me that they have live music on Friday nights). The wait staff are all very nice and extremely helpful. It is a smoke free environment so it was great since I have a small child. We began our meal with the chicken empanadas. They were wonderful. My daughter who typically is a picky eater was eating them without any problems (the menu says they are spicy, which typically I am a bad judge of spice since I LOVE spicy food, but my husband (who is swedish) doesn't like spicy yet he totally enjoyed them. My daughter ate them and occasionally made a face of confusion because she is not too familiar with spice but she ate them happily). For dinner my husband had the Pollo Guayaba and I had the Gallo Pinto y Carnitas. I had a few bites of the Pollo Guayaba and it was shear heaven in my mouth. I really enjoyed the Gallo Pinto (black beans and rice mix)and the carnitas was good too. I added some of the dipping sauce you get with the platanos and it gave it a great taste. The platanos malduros that accompany the meal were also delicious thou you only get two but you can always order a side plate of them if two is not enough. My daughter kept taking them from our plates and eating them all. You get allot of food for the price and unfortunately we didn't save any room for desert..guess we will have to wait till next time. I even got a chance to speak to one of the owners who came by and asked how our meal was. It is a husband and wife team and the husband is El Salvadorian.
All in all our experience was wonderful. The portions of food you get are extremely plentiful and well worth the money. We definitely will be visiting alot!

MY REVIEW: I stopped in at 11am on a Saturday and was blown away by how good the food was. I had a latin pork steak dish with a heavy pineapple based thick dark sweet sauce served with delicious plain white rice along with fried bannana wedges. I asked and was given a small house salad with delicious latin guava fruit dressing. They also have great variety of fresh fruit juice drinks. They also serve spiced bannana chips complimentary. I will be back to try other salads, an interesting seafood medley lain soup plus other main cources. ONE CAUTION THEY ARE CLOSED ON MONDAY'S.
