MY REVIEW: My family accidently came across the restaurant. We loved it, I agree with everyone about the service, but with our experience I belive it was more of a language barrier then non-social. She didn't speak any english. The woman who I can only guess was the owner or manager was very nice. Again, the food was great!

MY REVIEW: The best Cuban cuisine in Houston. Very good roast pork, grilled chicken and pargo a la plancha (grilled red snapper)and of course black beans. The red snapper is as good as you will find at any restaurant in Houston.
Very good desserts, made at the restuarant. Simple ambience. A clean, family-run restauarant. Fidel and Yolanda will take good care of you!

MY REVIEW: Group from work went for lunch - we love this place - everyone had something different and everyone loved their food! Best flan in town too! Service was better than it had ever been before. All of us will go back.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I have eaten great Cuban food all over the USA and Latin America. Tropical Island Cafe ranks right up there with the best. We have also been to every Cuban place in Houston and this by far is the best. Ok, the ambiance is rather simple but the food is excellent and you get generous portions for a reasonable price.
The service is not so quick and you might have to ask for refills on you beverage but the staff is certainly very hospitable, which makes up for it all. They do get the food out to you in a very timely fashion.
The last visit we asked to speak with the cook to tell him what wonderful food he makes and found out the cook is also the owner.

MY REVIEW: I have visited this place with my husband, sisters, mom, cousins, aunts and uncles, etc. We all agree on this: The food is GREAT the service could improve TONS!! We always say “We will keep coming back for the food only”. It is not like we ask for much as far as service goes; we ask that we be greeted with a smile and that the staff be friendly. I have noticed that the attention and service is given to the tables with the most people. Most of the time everyone seems to be caught up in how busy they are, which is fine but the customers are what make this restaurant open everyday – so why aren’t they friendly? The portions are VERY generous and like I said the food is as good as we can get. I truly hope their service gets better so that I don’t have to stop having Cuban food.

MY REVIEW: I'm a new fan and I think this has a lot to offer.
Strong Points - Great food. Lots of pork, but pork that is properly prepared. - Relaxing decor. Not professional, but you can tell that they did it and put a lot of pride. - Prices are more that reasonable for the quality of the food. - VERY generous portions.
Weak Points - Don't get the ice tea. - The waitstaff can be a little out of it. - Not much seating.

MY REVIEW: I Loved the food at this place. Excelent! I had the "ropa vieja" and was more than satisfied. Very, very good food. I was not so impressed with the service. The man who attended us barley even spoke to us at all. Hopefully the next time we go, we are attended by a friendlier person. The food more than makes up for it though! I highly recomend it.

MY REVIEW: I guess this is more of a "non-review". After reading the good reviews, my husband and I wanted to try it. We made the trip in rush hour traffic, only to find them locked up at 5:30 pm! The sign on the door said open until 9:30 pm. If they can't be consistent about their hours, why would I try going there again?

MY REVIEW: Excellent, authentic, fresh, and abundant Cuban home cooking... this from my wife who is Cuban. However, the waitress forgot to fill up our iced tea, and was slow to process our payment... so they got docked on the tip. But no complaints at all concerning the kitchen.

MY REVIEW: We are Cubans and live in the northwest area. We heard about this restaurant last year and since then, we go every week-end when we are in town. The food is great! Very authentic. I don't cook and when we have guests for dinner and they ask me to cook Cuban food I order it form the restaurant and tell my guests I made it from scratch...

MY REVIEW: I ate at this nice Cuban Cafe with my spouse, daughter and monther in law for the first time. All of us are Cuban and very particular about the quality of Cuban food found in restaurants. Well, this place impressed us immensely with the quality, authenticity and freshness of the food!!! The place is pleasantly decorated with some Cuban based photos and artwork and the service was very good. Having grown up in Miami, Florida my wife and I believe the cuisine at Tropical Island is as good, if not better, than many of the "so-called" Cuban retaurants commonly visited in South Florida.
The restaurant is conveniently located off I-10 on the West side of Houston. We will back again and again as the cook, who is the owner, knows what he is doing!

MY REVIEW: Overall, the food my wife and I ordered was OK, but it tasted like the Croquettas had bee cooked sometime earlier and warmed up – not good at all.
Our server was one of the worst I’ve experienced in Houston – my advice to her – “clearly, you didn’t want to be there, so go home”. That way you won’t spoil the customers visit or ruin the owners business.

MY REVIEW: The food was excellent. The portions were good. The price was very fair. My only complaint was that the waiter could use a congeniality class. Overall though, for the value I will accept a certain amount of rudeness.

MY REVIEW: Excellent and authentic cuban food. Read the reviews before going to try this restaurant and I must say I was not disappointed.
It is a simple simple restaurant with authentic cuban food. No frills, just excellent service and food. My wife and I tried it and loved it so much that after our meal, we bought extra food to take home with us. I took home the menu to use their 'to go' service.

MY REVIEW: I love the food here--my first visit was less than two weeks ago, and I've already been back twice. Everything I've had has been delicious, but my favorites have been the steak sandwich (it has little crispy fried potatoes and ketchup in the sandwich), the fresh lemonade, the black beans mixed with rice, and the green fried plantains. The foods are simple but all very flavorful. The only thing we tried that was a little strange (mostly just something new to our palates) was the potato sandwich. It was good, just a gigantic portion of a food we're not accustomed to, so we brought plenty home. I will be back, soon!

MY REVIEW: After looking at the reviews here, I decided to try something different and Cuban sounded exotic enough. I was pleasently surprise by generous portions and tasty food. The service was great and the prices were adequate. Since I didn't know much about Cuban food, I asked the waitress for a recommendation. She recommended "ropa vieja" with rice, black beans and fried plantains. It was delicious. The portion was so large, I had to bring the leftovers home.

MY REVIEW: After being recomended by a customer at my Wife's office, we decided to try eating here in the hope that we would find a good Cuban restaurant in NW Houston....we were not disappointed. At this first visit, the family had Cuban sandwiches, as well as the grilled chicked breast and roasted pork dinners. Everything was excellent - including the black beans and rice, as well as the sweet plantains accompanying our meals. The flan and expresso afterwards was also very good.
Don't let the small size of this restaurant fool you - after many years of our living away from South Florida, we've found the neighborhood restaurant that we've been looking for. Good food, good service & good prices. (Note: The portions were very large - I'll recommend this place to everyone)

MY REVIEW: Seeing how Houston does not have many Cuban restaurants the food was good for being one of few Cuban places, but I've had better. The croquetas were a bit dry, and the papa rellena had very little meat, but overall the flavor was very good. They didnt have much of a selection because its a brand new place, but talking to the waiter he mentioned that they will be adding more to the menu. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere is quiet. It was a pretty nice place. I believe Tropical Island will be successful as more people are falling in love with Cuban cuisine. I would definately go back especially when they begin adding to the menu
