MY REVIEW: I love their happy hour drinks and food. Esspecailly the Avacado rolls. Service has been exceptional except for one night recently. The bar area is always crowded so make sure and get there early.

I definitely recommend this place.

MY REVIEW: My friends and I have made it a tradition to eat here every Thursday night for reverse happy hour (9pm-11pm). Half priced appetizers, sake bombs, beers, some drinks for the ladies, and half price sushi (4 common rolls). We can get full off sushi for 10 bucks, or get tipsy for 15 bucks.

We like sit out in the patio area when its nice outside. Generally an early 20s crowd here.. which is a big change of pace with all the family style restaurants in Sugar land.

MY REVIEW: I've been going to Kona Grill in Sugar Land for a few years, and have not once had a bad experience. Always enjoyed the food and service. Can't complain one bit. It is a very busy place and the waiters/waitresses work hard and I see that. Happy hour appetizers are always amazing and never had a problem with it. Can't think of one weak point so I will end it there. :)

MY REVIEW: It was not a good experience. We were seated for more than 10 minutes before someone came for a drink order or acknowledged us. It was so very cold at our table, I asked to move to an open booth I pointed out and the hostess went to ask. Then came back and said the booth was reserved. The booth was still empty ten minutes later when we moved to the patio (in Dec.) for a milder temperature. The door between patio and bar was left open making the patio table very loud from the "Rich & Beautiful" kids at the bar. The diablo shrimp was ok, but certainly not worth enduring the attitude. This place is made for teens and early 20's to test their popularity among peers .... not for diners.

MY REVIEW: Family and I wanted to try something new in Sugar Land, all I can say is don't bother with Kona Grill. Arrived for lunch on a Thursday around noon. Waitress seemed disappointed we didn't want to sit outside in the wind or at the bar. Hostess was genuinely put out that we asked to be seated in the dining room. Ordered the Diablo Shrimp appetizer and paid 12.95 for 6 shrimp with a Buffalo style sauce on them! Not worth the cost at all! Ordered "blackened catfish tacos" for lunch. Not only was the fish not blackened, it was not even cooked. The fish was barely warm and still the translucent color of uncooked fish, with a texture of mush. I took the fish out of the taco and ate the cabbage and avocado. (I don't send food back, I've heard horror stories of what you get in return!) The only saving grace was a kind and conscientious waitress. While I did not send the food back she knew I didn't like it and took it off my bill. The waitress deserves a better place to work!

MY REVIEW: This place has absolutely awful service. We went at a down time - around 2 -3 - for a late lunch. Of course, we were seated promptly because no one was there. However, we were seated with an excellent view of the kitchen, and when we requested a more private booth, the waitress stated that the other tables had been reserved. Really. We finally ordered, and one of my friends and I (I was with three of my friends) decided to split the steak and we asked specifically for her to bring an extra plate with the order so we could split it. The food finally came but there was not an extra plate. We asked for an extra plate, thinking they must have forgotten, and literally waited for ten minutes for a plate. There were only around two other parties there. We finally went up to a waiter loitering by the kitchen and asked for a plate. He asked to wait, entered the kitchen, and never came back. Meanwhile, our glasses were empty and the waitress walked by many times without asking how the food was or if we needed anything. Finally, we decided to leave. She finally decided to pay attention to us - "Wait, you can't leave yet. You haven't paid!" Pay for what? Untouched food? Despicable service? Disrespect toward clientele? Do not eat at this place if you have a shred of self-respect.

MY REVIEW: Slowest, weakest service I have ever experienced at any restaurant. The waiter, when he did decide to show up, apologized profusely, but we were horribly disappointed. THEY WERE NOT BUSY! There were many open tables.

Our party finally got up to leave after waiting 15-20 minutes for a desert that is straight out of the refrigerator. We asked for the bill from the hostess. I paid, and learned that my substitutions of vegetables for another vegetable on the menu were charged full price ($3/EACH). Apparently, this is common there (if you ask the hostest and waiter). So, give up your veggies for another veggie, and get charged for two new sides. Good policy.

I give Kona Grill Sugarland ZERO stars out of 10. (0/10).

MY REVIEW: What happen to this place? My friend and I got there at 8:30 and already there was a tons of people waiting for the reverse happy hour. Yes, its a good deal but not that good for people to start pushing and fighting over tables. I guess you should expect this seeing how everyone there just barely turned 21. Oh yeah, there was a "bouncer" checking ID if you wanted to go through the bar area and out to the patio. Anyways, we managed to get a table but our waitress didnt show up until 10 minutes later - with an attitude. I guess she thought she should take her time so that we can order off the HH menu, which starts at 9pm. Thats exactly what happend because we didnt see her again til then. Food was ok, drinks were good, but overall we were pretty annoyed with the enviroment. Yes, happy hour is suppose to be fun and loud but this was just obnoxious. Be ready to strike a pose or get pushed out of the way when these kids whip out all their digital cameras to take pictures of each other taking shots. Also, be careful not to look at these kids the wrong way because we saw little girls trying to instigate with other customers. "What are you looking at" "Did you say something about us"...Ummm...yeah, ok. Kona - get some mature adults back in there!

MY REVIEW: We've heard so much about this place, we had to check it out. The manager came out to greet us because it was hectic and service was slow (the manager was Troy, I believe.) He took our order and completely forgot about the sushi. We waited for our sushi for 45 minutes before questioning about it, and the rude server contested us that we did not order sushi. Isn't the customer always right?? Troy came out, apologize for mixing up the sushi order, and gave us a gift card to make up for his mistake. Needless to say, we're not going to be using this card here...maybe the other location will fare better. The overall experience felt like amateur hour.

MY REVIEW: I really enjoyed my dining experience at the Kona Grill. The decor and overall ambiance is very warm and relaxing. I had the Macadamia Nut Chicken and it was delicious. It comes with white cheddar mashed potatoes and this amazing sauce that I couldn't get enough of. The veggies that come with it are crisp and flavorful. For dessert you must try the macadamia nut pie. If you like pecan pie this is even better than that!! The meatloaf is also really good and it wasn't dry at all. Luckily I didn't have the bad servers that some of these other people experienced. I will definitely be going back for more!

MY REVIEW: We had a very bad experience at Kona... we were seated after a 10 min wait. Our server didnot show up for 20 mins!! Finally my husband went to the front desk to ask if some one can get our server so that we can atleast get some water!! Finally, he arrived after 10 more minutes and he happened to be the same guy who had passed us by several times before and had no even cared to ask us for drinks. Anyway, he finally asked us for drinks and we just ordered water as we were ready with our food order. Instead of taking the order, he again disappeared to get water and said will be right bak. Guess what? the guy doesnot show up for another 10 mins!!! We finally got so upset that we decided to leave without eating there! My husband was so mad and asked the hostess to speak to the manager before we left. The manager also didn't seem to care much either and just offered some lame apology. Very poor service. Definetly was our last visit there!!

MY REVIEW: I will definately come back, the sushi was great as well as the chocolate martinis and the desserts. I was also told that during happy hour on fridays and saturdays the drinks and desserts are half off if you sit in the patio, but it's on a first come first serve basis. The decor was nice and so was the waitress. I will definately come back.

MY REVIEW: My friend and I were in the galleria and happened upon this place. We had been doing some browsing in the galleria for a couple hours, and were ready to have some cocktails and a snack...so we headed towards Shuckers in the galleria (like we always do when in the galleria), but it was closed. We were disappointed since Shuckers has always been a nice relaxing place with accomodations for smokers, but we decided on trying the Kona Grill (we had seen the advertisement for the place back in summer '06, before it was opened, when they expanded that particular area of the galleria).

When I very first saw the place, I was skeptical: it seemed like one of those trendy, snooty, overpriced restaurants with loud music and mediocre food. Boy was I wrong! Although the place was busy, we were seated promptly in the patio area. There were heaters out there, and smoking was allowed. Our waiter was fast and friendly, and he suggested the calamari as an appetizer. It was delicious! I had 2 sushi rolls which were also excellent. My friend was not all that hungry, so she just kind of nibbled on the stuff that I got. All together, we had 4 beers, the calamari appetizer, and two sushi rolls (eel roll and california), and since we were there during happy hour, the check was only about $16. Unbelievable! I would definately return on my next visit to Houston.

MY REVIEW: I had been wanting to come here for awhile now & thought what I was seeing from Westheimer was the restaurant-it wasnt-that is a seafood resturant, but so from the moment I walked in I was disappointed. Then the hostess didnt have my reservation-which I had made 2 weeks earlier & even called two days before to add another person but when I walked in Saturday evening they couldnt find the reservation-luckily for them there were available tables. I was prepared for an argument-the hostess's were all about 20 years old of course & not worried about our reservation-they were more worried about talking about their Friday nights. So, we were seated-its very odd to be eating at a restaurant but your back is to the middle of the Galleria-it was almost like were were sitting in the walkway. I didnt like that at all-I mean it was a nice restaurant & not the N*infa's Express where you expect to sit in the hallway.

Anyway-our waiter was very nice & very patient with our group-I was so glad. He explained everything & answered all of our questions. The food was delicious & everyone enjoyed it. We had sushi & edamame as appetizers-I had the Macadamia Nut Chicken which was very good & quite a large portion-others with me had the Sea Bass, filet mignon, asian chicken salad & the Basil Pesto linguine. We all enjoyed our food alot. The prices were great-for the 6 of us -with 2 appeztizers, 2 glasses of wine & 6 entress our bill was only $156.00.

We were in and out in a very timely manner-the resturant wasnt crowded at all. I will go again but I will not make reservations & I will asked to be seated away from the mall. People walking by were distracting & annoying.

MY REVIEW: Hey yoyo calm the heck down – lol – or u are going to have a heart attack – Im actually more disturbed by your comments to others who happened to enyoy Kona a little more than you did. It’s a personal preference, no need to insult Houstonians.

The macadamia Chicken was yummy and the Devil spicy Shrimps appetizer was awesome – didn’t try anything else so can’t comment. We went with a big group for a bday and we had awesome time, service a bit slow but overall is all in the company and the people you are with. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the food.

Yes, there are better sushi places, more upbeat places, more decorative places, but that doesn’t mean you have to write an insulting comment to half of Houston telling them they have an attitude. Sounds to me like you are the one with the attitude. If our food sucks so much, then why don’t YOU leave Texas??

MY REVIEW: Do you guys actually know what good food is? I apologize & I know that's inflammatory but I'm incredibly disturbed by what many Houstonians think is good food (esp. good sushi). I wouldn't be too bothered (or pick a fight) if your opinions didn't drop the overall quality of food in the city.

Want better eye candy? Try R*a. Want better sushi? Try O*saka. Want even better sushi? Try S*akekawa in The Woodlands - or even better, leave Texas.

Yes, fine & quality dining does exist in H-town (yo), but unfortunately when too many of you call mediocre food "good", it lets too many establishments get away with presenting mediocre food as quality or even "fine" dining.

My wife, friends & I ate at Kona yesterday & I have to say (& did to the waiter who was a good guy) that it doesn't deserve the attitude it has. While we're at it, psuedo-S*tarbucks remixed techno doesn't make you cool. Fake & bake doesn't make you sexy (yeah, I said it), and an aquarium doesn't make you a sushi joint.

Ok, the food. Throwing meat on a grill, burning it in oil is not fine dining. Soaking green beans in oil is not fine dining. Scooping out greasy fried rice that looks mall food is not fine dining. If it had been just one item, I could believe that it was simply bad luck. But every single item was poor in quality.

The mashed potatoes were very dry, the calamari undercooked & bland, the green beans on all plates were soggy b/c of the oil, the fried rice glistened like a dark lake in the moonlight. Which is fine for cheesy poetry but NOT for food!

Educate yourselves! If you're going to have that attitude, at least back it up with something.

The pros?

The drinks were strong - probably explains some of your positive posts. The staff didn't have the attitude I expected - but then of course I'm pretty damn sexy. The server was a good guy. Was honest about the mojito.

The manager checked on the food quality but it seemed more like a self-congratulation rather than actually finding out. He was almost by the table before we even could respond & then posed the question as "Good as usual?"

It was my first (& last) visit. I hope that's not the usual. And sorry to b***h, but eh.

MY REVIEW: I have visited with guests from out of town on a quick, let's go eat somewhere in the Galleria, or late at 11pm, they close at 12:00PM their kitchen which is awesome after a long day of shopping!....

GREAT casual atmosphere, very cool, neat and I would just recommend the waiting area or hostess to be more energetic, livelier as soon as you walk in, more attentive to welcoming you to a great experience...

other than that, its not so crowded, no long waits, friendly staff, waiters are courteous and effective, the best part is the FOOD, its served rather quickly if your in that starving mood; its VERY delicious from the Sushi to the macadam' chicken! Its a combination of different flavors, not your usual eatery! HIGHLY, recommend it!

MY REVIEW: The food is WONDERFUL, but the service is HORRIBLE. Expect to wait FOREVER for your drinks, appetizers and entrees. By the time we got our entrees we had our credit card waiting at the end of the table because we were sure it would take 20 minutes to get it paid. If it weren't for the wonderful food (try the Sweet Chili Glazed Chicken - superb), we would never go back!

MY REVIEW: Went for happy hour on the deck on a wednesday night; got there around 5 pm and found the bar and deck fairly crowded already. We had 12 people at happy hour. Service was very good considering the crowd. We ordered tuna roll which was ok, saute chicken - pretty good and pizza which I thought was really good. Prices for food were 1/2 price during 4-7 pm and if you stuck with the margs and draft bud light drink prices were very good. The deck gets quite a bit of afternoon sun so bring your sunglasses. Overall a very pleasant experience.

Although we were a table of females he catered to our needs and then some. The happy hour is a great, good food, good drinks all for a good price. MY REVIEW: DONT DO IT!!!

We eat sushi a lot and we frequent the Galleria bar scene. We were not impressed with either of these options at Kona. The sushi was bland, uneventful and too expensive for the quality. The bar scene was just as bad. The bartenders are somewhat rude and have an attitude. It is impossible to get good service during either of their happy hours. We strongly recommend that if you must have sushi while in the Galleria area, to make the trek to Mi*ako's. If it's a bar you want...we recommend The Da*ily Gr*ill.

The only hightlight of any of our experiences there was the huge fish tank with the blowfish that, on occassion, will 'blow up'.

MY REVIEW: Our first visit to Kona Grill will not be our last. Originally, we were going to go to the cheesecake place next door, but were told it would be at least twenty minutes, even for the patio, even though there were several empty patio tables. Walking past Kona Grill, they told us there was immediate self-seating on the patio. The waitress came a bit after we were seated and brought a cocktail menu and a sushi menu. She told us they were in short supply of dinner menus and gave us one to share, so we borrowed one from the next table when they were finished. Service was friendly, but definitely not hovering. They had the drop-and-run down, but once we figured it out, we were just a little quicker to ask for things. She was never gone so long that we felt neglected. It was kind of nice to not feel rushed for table turnover.

We ordered a wide variety of drinks, and all but one were fantastic. The mai tai tasted terrible, so we sent it back. She replaced it with a different drink, at our request, and later showed us where it had been removed from the bill.

We ordered Maui Onion Rings and Tuna Wasabi for appetizers and were fighting over who got the last tuna wasabi piece. I won. For the main course, we had Mac Nut Chicken, Lemongrass Crusted Halibut/Salmon (listed differently on the menus), seaweed salad, and several orders of sushi. The seaweed salad was the freshest I have ever tasted. The vegetables that came with the chicken were crisp and flavorful, and I wish I would have ordered some more shoyu cream sauce. The fish was very fresh and did not taste "fishy."

For dessert, Macadamia Nut Pie and Passion Fruit Creme Brulee. The pie was good, but the ice cream served with it was even better. Vanilla Bean with a hint of coconut. The creme brulee only had a very thin top layer that did not completely cover the top, but the flavor of the custard was so good that we soon forgot.

Drinks, appetizers, dinner, and dessert for four came to 200 including tip.

Next time, we will take advantage of the happy hour pricing, so that we can return more often.
