MY REVIEW: the owner is very friendly. the food is very well prepared. there is not much ambience, but the prices are reasonable. I am dying now for one of their samosas. the staff is very kind. high quality food for very little. i hope they are very successful.

MY REVIEW: I was a little wary when I walked in. The place looks like it used to be a retail shop that was hastily converted into a restaurant. However, when it comes to what really counts--the food--my fears were unfounded. Everything was quite good, although my palak paneer was over-salted a bit. Best mango lassi I ever had, and the vegetable samosas were spicy and good. Be careful: the menu is "a la carte" and although individual items are inexpensive, your bill can add up if you let it!

MY REVIEW: MMMmmm, today's special shrimp masala... could have been spicier, but it did come with tasty tomatoes & crisp caramelized onions--- shrimp fajitas, Indian- style. The zarda dessert, orange- colored & zest- flavored sweetened rice with cloves, raisins & toasted nuts, was delicious and enough for four; however, one of my companions found it far too sweet. My other companion, who loves Mexican food, devoured her enormous chicken roll: tandoori chicken bits sealed in fresh naan. (She didn't abandon either of her two mango lassis, either). Needless to say, we'll all return, God willing!

MY REVIEW: Some updates: a second visit one Friday afternoon satisfied my gajar ka halwa craving. Too bad I had already eaten when my friend called to go to lunch. But she assured me her murgh korma with naan was delicious (it had much more meat than the lamb korma & cost $1 less) & that her palak paneer was equally fine. My halwa was not overly sweet and was studded with cardomom seeds & pistachio halves. Chunky- grated carrots make a more homey stye dessert than those refined versions at M*ogul & C*uisine of India. The generous portion here is worth its $2. Too bad they lacked rasmalai that day, though; my friend had hoped to try it. Darbar appears to be starting an assortment of daily specials---this day these included a few shrimp entrees.
Incidentally, both she and another friend praised those mango lassis...

MY REVIEW: Not your usual elaborate Houston Indo-Pakistani eatery, this is closer to the North Indian home cooking I've enjoyed than to the flavors & textures of Cuisine of India, Mogul, or Annapurna. Mmmm, authenticity!
An intimate, family-friendly dining space includes a lovely couch, big-screen TV and internet access for those so inclined--but I'm there for the food and to listen to the native Indian languages around me.
Meals here are entirely a-la-carte & a buffet will soon be introduced, so no wasting $$ on unsolicited "extras"; or worse, wasting those extras. Prices are reasonable and portions generous: my group of three feasted on three meat entrees, two vegetables, complimentary salad, two drinks, two parathas & three desserts for $30. Strengths: knock-your-socks-off spicy lamb korma, milder palak gosht & dal gosht. The palak paneer was lighter than most & featured silken, melt-in-your-mouth chunks of cheese. Too bad the "mixed vegetables" weren't the exciting jalfrazie for which I'd hoped, but at least there was cilantro on top and nothing we ordered was oversalted. Incidentally, we think we've located both the thickest & most natural-tasting mango lassi and the "rosiest" (& cheapest) ras gula in our part of town. Well, they call it ras gula but it was like rasmalai to me.
The menu includes mutton, chicken & beef offerings. (Sorry, seafood lovers!) Overall variety is limited; however, you will find the faluda, zarda, fresh parathas & chapatis elsewhere elusive. Yes they have biriyanis & an assortment of the usual appetizers too, but I'm eager to try the stuff you don't normally find in Clear Lake like paya and nihari.
Apparently this new place is equipped to host parties because they were preparing for one the evening of our visit. The amiable owner explained that this was why they had none of my favorite gajar ka halwa that day. DARNIT!! But I'm holding him to his word that it'll be there on my next visit...
Well I won't hold it against Darbar even if they don't have it. I'll always love my other ethnic "haunts", but this one's joining their ranks...
