Wunsche Bros. Cafe & Saloon
103 Midway St, Spring, Texas 77373
MY REVIEW: Frequented Wunsche Brothers in the 80's so decided to drive out to Old Town Spring to take a trip down memory lane.
Extremely disappointed in how the food has changed since the days of the fresh ground chuck hand made burgers. Now the burgers are preformed fast food frozen pattys. Meat was dry and the bun was way oversized for the little puck of meat. Thank goodness for the lettuce and tomato to add some moisture. Burger alone was $7 with nothing else, no fries, no nothin.
Husband had the chicken fried steak. He compared it to D*enny's. It was chewy and not tenderized enough. Chew chew chew... His meal with 2 sides was $13.
Kids ate off of the kids menu. Was very suprised to see $2 drink charge for each of our drinks since most of the time the kid sized drinks are included in the kids meals. They would recommend the chicken finger and grilled cheese as being up to kid standards.
The hi-lite of the meal was when the one piece of beer bread included in my husbands meal arrived. We split it into quarters and all got a bite. Very tasty!
Our waitress was really nice, the decor is cute and appealing but we won't be returning. Charlie Wunsche who haunts the place needs to run off the person in charge of the food purchases/menu and bring back the old Wunsche Brothers.

MY REVIEW: Sunday around Noon was not very crowded and we were seated right away. We ordered chicken fried steak, squash casserole and sausage balls. YUM! Our friend ordered fried fish and enjoyed his meal. Service was good. Still like this place after all these years.

MY REVIEW: My burger was good, but this place is definitely not worth the price. You don't get a side with the cheeseburger, which was already $7 so adding a side at $2.50 makes it almost $10 and that's without a drink. Waiter brought my husband 1 slice of beer bread (came with his meal) with 3 plates in case he wanted to share - SERIOUSLY!
Not worth the price or hassle to park. They seriously need some lunch specials.

MY REVIEW: The burger was very chewy and the onion rings were luke warm when they arrived at the table. The food was not as good at it used to be. I was disappointed by dinner being kinda warm as there were only two other tables of people there. Will not be returning.

MY REVIEW: We are new to the area and enjoy spending time in Old Town Spring. Both times I have been there were great. The first was in November with my 3 children (ages 10, 7 and 6). The portions were good and the atmosphere fun. I had the catfish poboy which was crisp on the outside and flaky hot on the inside. This last time we were there I took my in-laws who were in from out-of-town. I had the vegetable trio (squash casserole, green beans and black-eyed peas). Everything nicely flavored and too much to finish. Of course the beer bread was served and is always good! In-laws had the catfish poboy upon my rec and loved it.
I enjoy the atmosphere of the historic saloon. The service is very attentive! I will continue to bring out-of-town guests here and myself alike!
Lastly, the day we went in January was a very cold one. It was chilly inside the restaurant because so many coming in and out the front door, but they had space heaters around and kept the hot cocoa and coffee flowing. Great service!

MY REVIEW: This place has drastically declined in food quality and service over the last couple years. You get the feeling that they just don't care. After many years of eating there, it's somewhat sad to say that I won't be going back.

MY REVIEW: This was our 2nd attempt at this restaurant. We have heard good things about this place for years, and we did try this place out about 7 years ago, and thought it was horrible with a very limited selection of food.
Since the restaurant that we love (P*uffabelly's) was closed, we figured that we would give it a 2nd try. UGH!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!
I have NO IDEA why this place has such great reviews. The staff was friendly enough, but forgot to give me all of my order, and the food is mediocre. I decided not to get an entree, and rather a burger since they were a little pricey for their menu. You cannot add bacon or jalepenos to the burger because they do not carry those items. I could have gotten a cheaper better burger at a road side cafe.
The burger and the fries were very tasteless, and my friend ordered the chicken fried steak which she said was not good either.
Never again will I visit this place.

MY REVIEW: We had a very nice meal. We got the sourkraut sausage balls that were very good. My husband and I had the chicken fried steak. It was the best that either of us had ever had. The breading stayed on, it wasn't greasy, and the meat was not chewey. The bread is to die for. I was not fond of the whiskey cake, too many nuts for my likings, but the Peanut butter chocolate cake was really good.
We went around 8pm on a saturday night and had really good service. This is a really cool little place to eat. We will be back, this place is not for the health conscious...

MY REVIEW: Have eaten hear in past and the burgers were always decent, however this was not the case on our last visit. Service was terrible and there were only two other customers. Waitress was too busy flirting with a good looking guy at the next table. Burgers took over 25 minutes and were overcooked. My mothers burger was put in pieces on her bun. We could not get our water or coffee refilled since we could not get the waitress's attention. The fries were not seasoned enough. Will say that their onion rings were still awesome and the take home beer bread you can buy to take home is delicious.
Will not go back again which is unfortunate since going to Old Town Spring usually is enhanced by a visit to Wunshe's

MY REVIEW: Finally, after hearing about Wunsche Bros. for years I made my first visit. The place lived up to its reputation. Chicken fried steak is what you hear when folks talk about this Texas eatery, so I just had to try. Excellent! Onion rings that rival T*ookies in Seabrook. Whoever heard of saurkraut balls?? Well, they alone are worth the trip. Beer bread is wonderfully dense & heavy.
You can select from an impressive list of sides. I got baked squash cassarole which I enjoyed. But the mashed potatoes are served without gravy, which was dissapointing. I would've asked the server for gravy if he had been around----after he took our order and brought it to the table, he went awol for the rest of the meal. Glasses were not refilled, etc. When he finally brought our check, we wanted to share a piece of whiskey chocolate cake. It arrived without a clean fork. The cake was very moist and had nuts and raisins. Very good, but it was a small portion. It was Friday nite so there was live music which we enjoyed.
Inspite of poor service from our young waiter, no gravy on mashed potatoes and not enough cake for the money, most of the food was good enough that we look forward to our return to this institution of down home Texas fare.

MY REVIEW: I have to agree with one of the earlier reviews. This place was not all it was cracked up to be. We had our holiday luncheon here, both for the price, the location, the reputation that preceded it, and the fact that many of us had never been here.
My was I disappointed.
Service was great and drinks were on the table quickly. I must say that the beer batter bread was also a delicious treat as were the sauerkrat balls. However, that is where things went downhill.
My food was tepid at best as were the dishes of several table-mates. I ordered chicken fried chicken (my dish of choice when I am in an unseen land), mashed potatoes, and green beans. I mean, you can't go wrong with CFC can you? The meat was big, moist and crunchy, but it just wasn't hot enough. Like it had lost all it's steam on the way from the kitchen to the table (maybe the alleged ghost zapped all the heat?).
The atmosphere is nice and you can see the frequent trains that run on the Hardy rail tracks if you are seated at the right tables. We had a window seat and spotted 3 trains in the 2 hours we were there.
Anyhow, we had a good time, but I will not be rushing back for the food.

MY REVIEW: The french fries are awesome. They are made from unpeeled potatos and are hand cut. The menu could use some updating. There is a new owner, so I was hoping that he would bring in some new dishes, but the menu doesn't seem to have changed. BUT, the fries are so good that they will keep me coming back. I also love the sauerkraut sausage balls. The atmosphere is relaxed and very pleasant; it's a great place to bring the family to eat.

MY REVIEW: Their salads are the best I've ever had. I asked about their produce supplier because the lettuce is so fresh-tasting. The waitress informed me that they try to buy all of their produce from local growers when possible, which explains why everything tastes straight-from-the-garden. I've become so used to cardboard-tasting salads that Wunshce's salads are always a welcome respite. Oh, and take a friend if you plan on having one. Their salads are HUGE and loaded with goodies. My fav is the saurkraut/sausage ball salad. Not low on calories, but yummy!

MY REVIEW: Be sure to see Ryan, he was our waiter, great service and personality!
Food was very good, "home cookin" style, we had chicken fried steak and the Wed. special, chicken and dumplings, great on a cold night. But the beer bread, you have to try it, leave the diet at the door!!!
