MY REVIEW: I loved this place from the minute I walked up to the front door. It has a rope and pulley that acts as the door opener. After walking in the door it took us about 20 minutes to make it "almost" to the counter to order because we were looking at everything. They have so many great things to see and discover.

We went there with a group of 25 for a birthday party and ordered individually, the order came our correct for everyone. I ordered the 12 oz. Texas Rid-eye with baked potato and salad bar for $13.95. It was cooked to perfection and very tender. I definately will go back again and again.

MY REVIEW: This place is a must see.... small mom/pop home town atmosphere. There is incredible history in the carriages and establishment. Food was above average, BBQ meets are very well flavored. Great place to go for an evening with the kids. Reasonably priced meals are a great hit. I usually go once a month or so.

MY REVIEW: I really wanted to like this restaurant. The ambiance is really fun. The dining room filled with beautiful antiques. The wall covered in vintage wall paper, and in some cases vintage fabrics. If only the food had measured up. After reading reviews here, I was excited to try the chicken fried steak. It was as big as I had read it would be, but it was below average. Very little flavor of the meat. It tasted more like fried flour, and the cream gravy was thick, and bland tasting. My tiny, eats-like-a-bird eight-year-old liked her barbecue kids meal, but the serving size was so small! Maybe it would be okay for a very, very little child, but if your child is bigger than a first grader, you're better off ordering an adult sized meal. My husband liked his burger, but we both had the salad bar, and, as indicated elsewhere here, it is not a strong point. I'm not saying the salad bar has to be an all out buffet, but a little variety would have been nice.

It was a fun visit for the decor, but that's not why I go to a restaurant. We won't go again.

MY REVIEW: The Carriage House Cafe is so much more than just a cafe. It is an experience. It is a walk back in time to Texas 1845. It is a piece of living history. It is the place you take any friends, family or visitors when they want to try a real bona fide "Texas place".

There are no weak points here. The food is excellent and home made. The prices are very reasonable, making this an excellent value. They grind their own meat and slow smoke their brisket. The specialties are Barbeque, Burgers and some of the best Chicken Fried Steak I've ever sunk my teeth into. The "small" covers the plate and easily feeds 2 people. I've never seen the large. The sausage is excellent, ground with just the right amount of spice. They have homemade sides including wonderful mashed potatoes and cream gravy. The burgers are served open faced and are the chef's special creation. They are also huge. Everything I've had there is wonderful!

There are so many other reasons to come besides the wonderful food and value. Everyone that works there is so friendly and pleasant and happy to share things with their customers. That goes from the wonderful music they play to the chef telling you how he comes up with all his special creations to the history of the items they have in abundance. It is a place full of nooks and crannies and rooms filled with antiques and history. It will take several trips to explore and see all that they have. I am still finding things I hadn't seen before each time I go. It's that kind of place--like a living museum and each time, there are new discoveries. They play the old timey Texas country music--the kind I grew up on as a young girl growing up in deep East Texas. It is definitely a stroll back in time. And they will tell you what they are playing if you ask and are happy to share the music. As an added bonus, there is a train track just up the road and you can often hear the train whistle while you dine. That just adds to the ambiance.

This is my new favorite restaurant. There are horses in the back and roosters crowing. A little piece of country right outside the city. There is a smoke house in the back and even a little outhouse that will bring back memories to many. And yes, they have bathrooms indoors for guests. The parking can get a little crazy when it is a busy night, but even that is OK. Just chalk the parking up to part of the Tex-appeal. To sum it up, it's a wonderful place to take your family. Entrees: $5-12; drinks 1.35 - 2.75(imported beer); time travel - priceless.

MY REVIEW: First visit to this wonderful place. A very cozy, welcome atmosphere. Food is very good. I had the brisket and sausage and my wife had the chicken with pineapple salsa. Salad bar is simple but very fresh. Lots of antiques to check out also. Staff is very friendly. I'll be going back again.

MY REVIEW: HOUSTON'S BEST KEPT SECRET!!!! This place is simply amazing. Every time I have eaten there the food has been so yummy. Home cookin' at it's best and the BEST chicken fried steak ever. My dad thinks their banana pudding is to die for and my husband fell in love with their mashed potatoes.

Father and daughter team own the restaurant and keep it low key. Their story is a special one. Remember to take a look at the family photos inside.... they'll make you feel like part of their family. This is by far my favorite restaurant in North America. And I love the horses out back!!

MY REVIEW: Wow! A group of us went here for Sunday dinner and we really enjoyed our visit. The food was great, the service was great and we love the antiques. It has a great Old Texas feel, and it's a wonderful place for family meals at a good price. I had the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. The huge steak was breaded just right and had a great flavor. The mashed potatoes were just like you get at grandma's. Don't go looking for a fancy restaurant, this is down home (on the ranch) and we like it the way it is!

MY REVIEW: From the parking lot to the table this restaurant is a great place!! Their hamburgers are awesome. And the Chicken fried steak is very goooooddddd! the service was perfect it was at least 30 of us and the food was great and fast service was their aim. One of the orders got lost and the chef came out and fix the problem right away. They take pride in everything they do. It's a great place and you will feel right at home. Keep the excellent job and thank You for creating such a great place.

MY REVIEW: We finally got back to this place and it was great! I love their salad bar and my husband likes the Sausage and Brisket..........But the most amazing thing was the large Chicken fried steak my step-son ordered. I could have fed a family of 4 or more with it!! The prices are good, the staff are excellent and you never leave hungry!!!

MY REVIEW: My husband and I have never eaten bad food at this establishment. Friends we have taken there return with other friends. The chicken fried steak is so tender it can be cut with a fork. The potato salad needs work, but the mashed potatoes are yummy. Yes the parking lot is nothing to brag about, but you do not eat in the parking lot. Consider it part of the ambience.

MY REVIEW: My husband works very nearby and found this gem. He eats there much more often than I, but I still get him to take me sometimes. I am not a fan of bbq sausage, but I have to say that there's is the best I've had. Also, their bbq-stuffed potato is wonderful and their brisket is moist and tender. I love the atmosphere as well.

MY REVIEW: This is a terrific place to eat. The food is realy good hearty Texas food. The portions are very plentiful, you won't leave hungry. The staff is very helpful. When I asked about a vegetarian menu for an out of town guest, they said they would make anything that we requested if we gave them enough notice. The decor is rustic southwest with lots of antique furniture. I highly reccomend it.

MY REVIEW: Great family atmosphere because its owned by a terrific family (father & 2 daughters) who are very accommodating. The food is very good, excellent chicken fried steak and chicken, mashed potatoes, grilled items, unique kids servings. Old west decor is wonderfully nostalgic, pictures on the walls are priceless, carriages authentic. Alicia, one of the owners, went out of her way to help my party of 20 celebrate 3 birthdays one Sunday afternoon and took care of us without a hitch. This is an old barn converted to a restaurant and the a/c could be better, but that's minor considering the value of this gem. The staff seems as nice as the family and the food doesn't disappoint.

MY REVIEW: I've been here twice, about 3 months apart. Had the chicken fried steak the first time and a grilled chicken breast in some kind of sweet rum sauce the second. I really like this place. It is an informal family owned operation and I really like the family that runs the place, also. Decor includes some exquisite English antiques, many old books and saddlery/tack odds and ends. Prices are very reasonable.

MY REVIEW: All other stops were just fine..........A great place. But this Saturday, they had quite a few cars there. So we went there around 5. We found out that they were just getting done with some sort of party. The service we got was terrible. The salad bar was left with NO lettuce at all. I had to go ask about it. Then the coffee took forever. And the few guys left over from the party were sitting not far from us making a very loud, not so clean, obnoxious conversation!! We had wished many times that we had gone somewhere else. They should have been closed for dinner!!

MY REVIEW: Well, I am the sister Debra talked about--and the mashed potatoes were ALMOST as good as mine! The chicken fried steak was wonderful and the salad bar was very fresh--it could have had a couple more items on it, but what they had was freshly prepared. I have lived in Houston all my life and have passed the restaurant several times and never noticed it--now that I know where it is--I WILL be back! :)

MY REVIEW: This is a favorite of our family. My in-laws travel from across town for their chicken fried steak, which is the best I've tasted. We take business clients and out of town guests there not only for the great food but the charming atmosphere. You feel like you've stepped back in time to the old west. It's worth a drive just for the ambience, beautiful Texas antiques tastefully arranged to fit the delicious bar-b-que and Texas friendly staff. We have always felt like this charming restaurant was our "secret" but we are so glad to see so many great reviews.

MY REVIEW: I just want to say that I will go back. The Grilled chicken with pineapple salsa was absolutely the best. The mashed potatoes were as good as my sister's and no one makes them better than her. My sister had a small chicken fried steak and she took most of it home because it was so large. Good food for the price.

MY REVIEW: I saw a favorable comment in the dining section of the newspaper, so I went to this website and read more favorable comments. My husband, my sister and I drove from Katy to check out the Carriage House Cafe. It was a joke! First of all we had to tip-toe through water in the unpaved parking lot and pathway to the entrance. It was Saturday night at 6:30. There were only a couple of cars in the parking lot. That should have been our first clue. While the teenagers at the order desk were sweet girls, the food was awful. I re-read the posted comments on this website the next day and laughed out loud. My husband had the regular size chicken fried steak (we were told it was HUGE), onion rings and potato salad. The steak was less than ordinary. I have had better chicken fried steak in MANY other restaurants. None of us could eat the onion rings. They had garlic or onion powder on them. The potato salad was tastless. My sister had grilled chicken salad and said it was fine. I had the special of the day "pineapple grilled chicken", sweet potatoes and the salad bar. The chicken was tastless with a sweet sauce on it. I did not eat the sweet potatoes....need I say more? The salad bar was a joke. The way it had been described, I was expecting something special. It had lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, cucumbers, and jalapeno peppers on it. There were no grated boiled eggs, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, bell peppers, beets, or other items usually found on a good salad bar. The place was very dark. It is NOT a "be back" restaurant for us! When we left at 7:30 there were only a few more cars in the parking lot. That does not indicate a popular place to me.

MY REVIEW: This place needs a bigger parking Lot!!! It is great. My step-son is hard to please and he loves the Chicken Fried Chicken. My husband liked the Sausage very much. And I don't eat meat, so the backed potato and great Salad bar fit me just right! And the sweet potato's were very good!!

MY REVIEW: Great atmosphere, fantastic food and the people there are so nice. I love the fact that they have a horse theme next to the Sam Houston Race track. When my mother came in town from out of state, this was the place to go. She said it was the best chicken fried chicken that she has ever had. I agree!

MY REVIEW: The food was great. I had the chicken fried steak, you just have to have that - and the mashed potatoes - homemade, the gravy - homemade, and the fried okra. Wonderful!!!! It was so good, I could have gobbled it down, but was too busy looking at all the beautiful antiques. I have to go back and look around some more and try the briskett.
