MY REVIEW: I made a reservation through Open Table and it worked perfectly. We asked for a booth for 4 to celebrate my mother's birthday. My Mom is a great cook and hard to please. She loved this place. My daughter who is 10 loved this place as did her father and I. We dined here for my Mother's birthday. My mother, my daughter and her father and I LOVED thios place. Our evening was perfect. Beautiful hotel and rstaraunt, faboulous and unique food, helpful wait staff.
My ten year old daughter had the roasted duck which came with a watercress flan. Her father the boullebaise which he said was one of the best he has ever had. My mother the sirloin and I had the filet with a peppercorn sauce. My filet came with 4 small twice baked poatoes and a sauteed green. I would recommend my meal to any one who loves filet. Every one of our meals was perfection. The veal starter and fresh ravioli appetizer were wonderful. The blue cheese rolls were light and tsaty and warm. For desert my daughter had the rasberry chocolate souffle and my mom had a poached pear tart.
Our waiter was helpfull, attentive but not hovering. Chef Phillipe came out to great diners.
We will definetely go back.

MY REVIEW: We had a wonderful experience here. The service was attentive without being overbearing. The menu is creative and the presentation was good. I had the avocado crab bomb for an appetizer. It was delicious. My husband had the sausage brioche. Again, very tasty. We enjoyed the pork and the bouillabase for our entrees. Desserts were also creative and very tasty. The sleek, modern decor was chic without being cold. We will definitely return.

MY REVIEW: Both times my experience was excellent. First time I went with my husband, today I went with a friend for lunch. Good food, great presentation, good service and great vallet parking. This time we had the salmon and the carrot soup. I definetely will return. The first time the Chef came out to say hello, this time he was out of town.

MY REVIEW: Once you take away the glitz and the reputation you are left with ordinary food and below average service .
The main courses of filet mignon and monkfish were nothing special. Great plate presentation does not compensate for journeyman food. Appetizers of onion soup and salmon tartar were quite good but the service was so slow it was embarrassing. And what service there was ... An example: Our water glasses were very low, after acbout 10 minutes I saw the waiter and asked for some help with the water. Someone came over and filled each of our glasses about an inch from the bottom (not the top--about 2 tablespoons full). His water pitcher was out so we assumed he went to get a refill and would finish our reload. Well, we never saw him again. The waiter sat with my credit card and the check in his pocket for about 10 minutes until I asked about it. Perhaps picky but there were so many examples of a poor effort.
Just overall a great disappointment and another example of glitz and who you know (or are) making an undeserved reputation for quality.

MY REVIEW: We were recommended Bistro Moderne by a Frenchman and had high expectations of a real treat. The evening started out well as the valet parking is easy, the restaurant is elegantly decorated in a contemporary style and the wait staff are impeccably dressed in their ivory colored tunics. The table linen/floral decorations/silverware and glassware are well chosen and complement the design.
The overall experience was disappointing for both food and service, although there is some good food here.
I chose the avocado and crab bomb to start and my partner the escargots. Both appetizers were beautifully presented - as was everything for the entire meal - and the snails were very good. However, the crab was encased in a kind of avocado mousse which was an artificial-looking bright green color and everything, including the tiny diced tomatoes sprinkled artfully around the plate, tasted of vinegar. I decided I had chosen badly and looked forward to the entrees. My husband went for the pork chop and I chose the duck breast. The sauces for both did not have the required intensity of flavor. The vegetable accompaniments were both good (swiss chard au gratin with the pork and the carrot and cumin flan with the duck) and the fried duck leg ravioli was interesting, but the duck filling could have been more highly seasoned.
By the time we'd got to dessert we'd got the picture - as long as it looks fabulous - it doesn't matter what it tastes like. My husband's profiteroles looked gorgeous and the sauces - white, milk and dark chocolate - were good. The hazelnut ice cream was divine, yet the profiteroles themselves tasted stale. My warm chocolate fondant was truly excellent but was paired with an overpowering lavender ice cream which reminded me of Grandmama's bath salts.
As for the service - one waiter approached our table with his hands in his pockets, waiters were talking together within earshot of diners, waiters were not filling empty wine glasses.
Conclusion - some of the food was great, but not all. As for the service, there is considerable room for improvement to give unobtrusive, unpretentious, yet attentive high-class restaurant service. The staff needs to be properly trained.

MY REVIEW: Excellent restaurant. Went for lunch and was very impressed and will definitely return. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was outstanding and the food was very good.
The only negative for Bistro Moderne is the location. Westheimer and 610 is possibly the worst intersection in town and the Derek has very limited parking but the valet I believe was complimentary. That being said, a trip to Bistro Moderne is well worth it.

MY REVIEW: We will NEVER return to Bistro Moderne! Our dining experience was one of the worst we have ever experienced! After entering and approaching the hostess stand we waited four minutes until finally the bartender greeted us. We asked for a table for two and he said he'd check. Then the hostess came and we told her we wanted a table for two. She told us to hold on so she could check. She just came from the dining room! When she came back she said it would be five minutes and we could wait in the bar. After ten minutes of waiting, my husband went back to the hostess stand to inquire on the problem. The hostess didn't remember him! She said the wait would be another five minutes and tried to walk off. My husband stopped her and asked if she wanted to write his name down b/c she already forgot about us once. She looked at him with a blank stare and then said OK.
After we were sat, we weren't greeted by anyone for 2 minutes until we finally flagged someone down.
Need I continue? The entire evening consisted of us waving servers down. Whatever happened to the 45 second greet time? Or after the meal is served waiting a bit and then checking to see if everything is OK?
Overall, the food was average. So that along with the worst service in Houston made our experience terrible!
Maybe the location is cursed since no restaurant has lasted there. Hopefully, this one will go out of business... and soon!!!

MY REVIEW: Our dinner group visits a different restaurant each month and can be a little critical. We had a wonderful meal at Bistro Moderne. Everyone raved about the food. I especially enjoyed the trout almondine stuffed with fresh spinach. And the best cup of coffee in my life. I held my cup and enhaled...absolutely wonderful. Looking forward to going again.

MY REVIEW: The room's design, food, presentation & service are as good as we've seen in Houston. This could EASILY be in NY, Chicago, LA, Miami...or even Europe. Top 5 in town (17, Sorrento, Mark's, Cafe Annie) , and I've eaten in over 50 restaurants since we moved here.
Top flight!

MY REVIEW: A lovely establishment with the right ideas, though a bit un-cozy ( huge)
Of course the food is more than excellent. I could go on about the food as we have taken or accompanied several couples to this Bistro. I will say. however, that in one or so more visits we will have tasted most of the items on the menu . We are now wondering with their small menu, how we will like repeating these dishes over and over. Also there are no off-the-menu offerings and so far they don't plan to change the menu. Also, should a guest's diet require some of the same food choices prepared in a more healthy way then they would be in trouble because " the chef's work would be compromised.". I really don't blame the chef for that as the chef is brilliant. I don't compromise my work either. The most obectablething is the unprofessional service compared to the quality and prices of the food. The few waiters serving the guests, try hard and are friendly but not at all trained by the management as well as they should be. With the prices one should feel like the King of the World and why not! I will return for awhile but I will tell my companions not to expect top of the line service .This isn't France!

MY REVIEW: Very attractive, expensive French food that is not quite completely polished yet in its final product. We were served stale bread and the fish entrees were acceptable but not as good as the price would suggest. The souffle was not really a souffle. The lobster salad was filled with too much fried coating. All in all, great promise, but still has a ways to go to compete with other high quality and perhaps less expensive places (A*riel, M*arks, C*harivari).

MY REVIEW: FINALLY, a wonderful French bistro in Houston. I have been waiting so long for contemporary French fare and it has arrived! My wife and I went to the new Bistro Moderne (located adjecent to the Hotel Derek) and found a wonderful restaurant with professional service and excellent food. We started our meal with (I will not even try to spell the meal in French) warm lobster beignets served on an endive and mesclun salad and smoked sweet breads and shrimp on skewers. For our main course I tried the bouillabaisse, which is very hard to find in Houston, but was perfect and my wife had pan seared sea scallops served on a very thin and very fresh lasagna sheet with grilled vegetables in a light vinagrette. For dessert we tried the thin apple tart with fresh vanilla ice cream and the warm chocolate fondant (cross betweent a moist cake and souffle)served with lavendar ice cream. The entire meal was excellent. The restaurant itself is beautiful and looks like something you would find in New York. Very warm and inviting with rich chocolate brown leather chairs that you could sit in for hours. Beautiful flowers, lighting, etc. etc. We have already put Bistro Moderne on our "must return" list. One piece of advice is to go now as this place will be packed as soon as the holidays are over.
