MY REVIEW: A nice change of pace. Finding good Tex-Mex is not hard (excellent is a different story); hence the many good establishments need something to set them apart from the crowd. El Matador's good food and good value does that for us. The Green "salsa" was excellent, however the Red Salsa was merely fair. The Quesadillas were very good and the Beef Fajitas was nearly excellent and a very good price.

Service was a little spotty, but all-in-all considering the quality of the food and the price point El Matador offers very good value. I only wish the Red Salsa was better. We will be back.

MY REVIEW: This place is a jewel. They have the best in Spanish Karaoke of all the Houston Karaoke bars. Johnny is incredible as a DJ and singer. Jose, the owner, goes out of his way to make guests feel at home. Get there early for this place is standing room only every Sat. If you want a truly Hispanic experience with all the dancing and singing This is the place. Great food, great fun! Awesome Micheladas with Tecate beer!

MY REVIEW: I really like this place. The food is surprisingly inexpensive, beef fajitas for two with a side of queso ends up being half what you'd pay at P*appasito's or C*huy's and are just as good. The steak burrito is also giant and very tasty. The only weak points are the chips, rice and beans aren't the best. The chips don't taste homecooked and the rice & beans are blandish. But, service is good, the place tends to get busy late night but when we come during normal meal hours there is usually plenty of space. It's one of my favorite places to go now because it is such a good value and the fajitas are so good.

MY REVIEW: We have started going to this place at least once a week. Great food, good drinks at a reasonable price and a nice atmoshphere. The fajita's are huge and very tasty, better than we've gotten from other local Mexican places. But that's not all. I didn't expect to find some of the best fish I've had in a "Mexican restaurant", but I did. My wife is VERY finicky about the freshness of fish, and she loved it too. Dee gave us some great recommendations for things to try...trust her judgement on what to order. She's very attentive to your needs, and remembers what you like and don't like.

MY REVIEW: First time on a Saturday night and was very impressed with the food. My Girlfriend ordered the spinach and chicken enchiladas and I ordered the Royal Oaks Redfish Snapper. Both dishes were excellent and my gilrfriend liked my dish so much that we switched plates after eating our corresponding halves.

I will definetely go back and can't wait to try other dishes.

MY REVIEW: Stopped in for lunch this past Friday and ordered the chicken enchiladas. Best I've had in my 7 years in Houston. Just the right amoun of cheese so that it didn't smother the flavor of the chicken. It's a keeper.

MY REVIEW: This is the best Mexican food in Houston. They offer all the usual TEX-MEX and Mexican fare which is always good, but the best thing about this restaurant is the variety of dishes that I have never seen at any other Mexican restaurant such as the steak and chicken Norteno served with a shrimp sauce which is heavenly. They have the very best carne asada and fajitas I have ever tasted. They are marinated and so tasty which is more than I can say about a recent visit down the street to another Mexican restaurant which is supposed to be so good...do not go by name recognition. Try this food and you will not be sorry. The prices are also very reasonable and you get a lot of food. telling it the way it is

MY REVIEW: We were looking for somewhere different to eat and wondered about about restaurants in our area (77042). We decided on Mexican and looked up El Palenque on this site, but were discouraged by the mixed reviews. Then we remembered that we had some register-receipt coupons and decided to try El Matador after reading the unanimously positive reviews here. We were not disappointed!

For an appetizer we had their queso dip which, while a little chunky, was only so because it had real cheese in it, instead of just Velveta. The green sauce served with the chips is much better than the red sauce, which should have been served warm instead of cold. I had the chicken-spinach enchiladas and YES, they are as good as everyone raves about in their reviews! My companion had the shrimp enchiladas and they, too were delicious.

We got there right at 7 and were still able to get happy hour margaritas; they were good! The service was attentive, accurate with the bill (coupon discount) and it was nice to be able to see the Astros game while we dined. Overall, we were very pleased and plan on returning (with a coupon...why not?).

MY REVIEW: The first time I went I had the cheese enchiladas. They were OK but I had tasted better. I went a 2nd time because I knew from reading the reviews there had to be something special about this place that I was missing. I decided to follow the advice of the many reviews here and try the spinich chicken enchiladas. And they truly are FANTASTIC! I LOVE that cream sauce! Everything tasted so authentic and fresh. The red salsa they bring out may be the best I've ever had. You can really taste the fresh herbs they put in. My boyfriend really enjoyed HIS cheese enchiladas, and my dad wouldn't stop raving about how good his steak ranchero was. Our waitress was very nice but the poor girl was the only one there and had to wait on 4 tables plus 3 people at the bar by herself. I've never worked at a restaurant before but that seemed like a little much IMO. We were empty on chips and drinks a couple of times and it took awhile to get in and out of there but it totally wasn't her fault. I have just 2 pieces of advice for El Matador: one is to hire more waiters, and the 2nd is to get a fountain machine. Our soft drinks were a little on the warm side and I know it didn't come from a fountain becuase I heard the waitress opening the cans. But we will definitely return.

MY REVIEW: This is the best mexican food ever. Very authentic. I live near the restaurant an my family dines here at least once ever 2 weeks. The children love it. The Steak Norteno and Chicken Norteno are the bomb. My sisters drive across town to eat there. If it wasn't a shame, we would eat there at least twice a week. Oh, and the Margaritas are awesome.

MY REVIEW: Great place with great food! The spinach chicken enchiladas are to die for, all meat dishes are tender and flavorful, appetizers are excellent and in portions large enough for a meal and the specialty menu items are unique in my Mexican dining experience.

Service is prompt and friendly in the dining area as well as in the sizeable bar. The bar sports $2 margaritas during happy hour, a great value, and draws a very diverse crowd of people who all seem to know each other and welcome new customers openly. Multiple TV screens show a wide variety of sporting and other events and the staff is more than happy to tune to a requested channel.

All in all El Matadaor serves up great food, a great, friendly environment and is a spot I will continue to patronize on a regular basis.

MY REVIEW: Excellent authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. Great spinach and chicken enchiladas. All carne dishes very tender. Great food at affordable (family) prices. Steaks recently added to the menu are cooked to order and very tender. Pretty bartenders and friendly waiters and waitresses. Nice place to have dinner with a date on Friday night then hang around to socialize and party.

MY REVIEW: Great margaritas and El Matador fajita-queso dip. The very best in Houston chicken-spinach enchiladas with a cream cilantro sauce. We love them so much that is all we have tried on the menu. The charro beans are excellent also.

Very efficient wait staff. A definated must do restaurant.

MY REVIEW: Excellent Mexican and Tex-Mex food. Always fresh and served hot. They have wonderful grilled chicken dishes which vary by the type of sauce you prefer---no other Mexican restaurant has food like theis especially the Chicken Norteno topped with a light sauce with shrimp and cheese. The chips are fresh and not greasy offered with a green and red salsa. The skirt steak and traditional fajitas are very good, too. They offer el charro beans which is like a wonderful soup with cilantro and meat with the beans or the refritos. I have eaten there many times with friends and everyone is amazed at the quality and quantity of food for the price. The owner is friendly and often stops by the table to ask your opinion on dishes. This place is a winner and my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Excellent service also.

MY REVIEW: Queso was very good. Really cheesy taste! Quesadilla were freshly made. Very good. Shrimp cokctail had huge shrimp in it. Much better than the small shrimp most restaurants use. Shrimp fajitas had the same really big shrimp.

Fried Ice Cream was great for desert. The waitress and staff were very friendly and the prices were good.

Good casual, low priced high quality food. The place is new and is near my house. I've went there a few times. They are still a little slow on Saturdays they said.

Definately good food.
