Profile Description: At Atami, it is mission accomplished as it has created that environment with the introduction of Hibachi Grill tables each accommodating diners who get to watch the chef prepare their meals right in front of them. For those who are interested in Japanese cuisine, the selections offered at Atami are impressive, dinners have an incredible selection of sushi rolls (choose from about 50 selections), sushi (over 30 selections) and sashimi (over a dozen selections).
MY REVIEW: This sushi was very bland yet as expensive as if from a gourmet sushi place. The teriyaki bowls were better but overall I don't see value for the money. The booth we got seated at was shaped funny and even with just 4 of us we couldn't sit comfortably in it.
I won't go back. There are better choices for sushi and other Japanese food, for less money.

MY REVIEW: We have been going to Atami ever since they opened in Katy because it was closer and a much better value for the money than B*enihana's in town. We usually go on Saturdays for lunch because of the lunch menu prices and that's when we are all available. Our family sits at the teppanyaki grill and it has always been very enjoyable and good. This past weekend was my sons' birthdays and we celebrated there as usual. We seemed to have either a new or in experienced cook who was a bit unsure of the routine. After reading over our order, we explained that as usual, we had ordered 3 extra fried rices to be split between the 7 of us plus the usual rice order which comes with each hibachi order. We have never had a problem doing this before because we love the fried rice. We had another family of 4 also sitting at our grill. When the rice was brought out to be prepared, I wondered if it was enough, but trusted they knew what they were doing. After frying up the rice, the chef began scooping up the rice and serving to each person at the grill. What was supposed to be 15 orders of fried rice ended up being much less. The cook began to serve the family of 4 their rice first, and he packed their bowls full. Then he began to serve our family of 7, and after a couple bowls he seemed to realize he was going to run short, so instead of getting more rice to fix his mistake, he began to serve our bowls very loosely packed and only partially full. At the end, where there should have been 3 extra bowls full, there were barely 2 and really more like 1, but only because the other 7 were also barely full. It was very dissapointing to see the other family which included a small toddler eating our rice while we wondered why we had even ordered extra, since we didn't even get 1 full order each. On top of that, I ordered a side order of extra shrimp to go with my hibachi chicken and got 4 small shrimp for $4 where I had gotten 6 before on other visits. It was pretty disappointing since we had enjoyed much better meals before and this was a special occasion. The quality seems to have gone downhill, and it just isn't as good as it used to be. We may give it another chance, but maybe we should just start going into town if the value continues to slide. It used to be so much better!!

MY REVIEW: Atami is kind of pricey so we typically go for birthdays and always sit at the grill for the kids entertainment. The kids always have a good time and the shrimp and chicken combo is great.
We wouldn't think of going at any time but early early early on a Saturday typically around 5pm or so. We're not into waiting an hour to get in anywhere, too many good choices to do that.
I guess this is the closest thing little Katy will get to B-hana for a while.

MY REVIEW: It seems that the quality of the sushi has really declined in recent months. On Saturday, we ordered 3 rolls and 2 orders of nigiri. All 3 rolls were not well-wrapped and fell apart on the plate. 2 of the rolls were spicy tuna based. In both of them, the tuna was mushy (a sign of past-its-prime fish). The service was fine. However, I don't think that I'll be back.

MY REVIEW: Visited Atami several times for sushi. Great Scorpion roll w/ jalapenos and crabmeat. Fresh salmon and strong cocktails. Service though was awful. Ordered 3 rolls, received 2 and waited for 20 minutes for the last roll, which she "forgot". The sushi chefs (half of which are hispanic) made the rolls pretty quickly, but the waitresses would let them sit on the counter for over 30 minutes before they serve them. We saw several plates sitting on the sushi counter for 30+ minutes before the server took them to their table. Prices are too expensive for Katy. Speciality rolls average $12, and there are more speciality rolls than regular rolls.
Would recommend to try them at least once, maybe you'll get better service. Male servers and much better than the female servers. The women are too busy gossiping to do their jobs.
Strengths: Great food, good variety of sushi.
Weaknesses: Awful service, non personable. Long wait for food. Prices are too high.

MY REVIEW: First time to visit, and I went after reading all the reviews from here.
My date had a Mojito, and I had a lychee Martini. Drinks were good, and service was very attentive. Lots of action going on in this place, and it feels 'trendy' like the new Asian restaurants do. Pretty clean place.
My date orderd a sushi roll combo, and I had a sushi combo and we had a scorpion roll. We shared everything. The scorpion roll was awesome! Very fresh ingredients, including the jalepenos and Green Onions. The sushi overall was very tasty, although about 4 or 5 pieces of fish had a very muddy flavor and was obviously not fresh or sushi grade. That being said, not all of it was bad, just a few pieces were inedible.
I may try this place again.

MY REVIEW: This place is nice. Wow! The price is a little bit high but the food is great! I won't recommend to sit at the grill at weekend. It is like they rush you out. The service is good; but could use more server.
The sushi is fresh and the pepper tuna - Yum! Their special drink Orange Mojito is good too. Wish they have more choices.
Bottom line, thumbs up. Should vist if you anywhere around Katy.

MY REVIEW: We go to Atami at least once or twice a month. My husband and 5-year-old daughter LOVE the sushi. We usually sit at the grill b/c it's fun for the kiddos. And I get the apple martini, because it's fun for the mommy :-)
I suppose that this restaurant isn't your typical "family" place, but for us it's perfect. Good food and good fun. Friday and Saturday evening are really busy, but they always find a spot for us!

MY REVIEW: Some of the best sushi in all of Houston, not just Katy. The prices are MORE then reasonable for the price. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh! Everything has always been GRADE A on the food side. Even my wife, who does not eat fish is satisfied with the vegetarian sushi, and the vegetarian hot dishes. The staff is knowledgeable, but not always at your table when you need them to be. I would say the restaurant is under-staffed b/c you always see the wait-crew running around to help their tables, but it seems to many tables, not enough staff! This place is the BEST, much better then S-Hana!

MY REVIEW: Great Katy Sushi restaurant. A bit pricey for this side of town, but the food was delicious! Very fresh seaweed salad. Good wide selection of rolls and sushi. Fresh sushi!!!!
We sat at the bar and had excellent service. The martinis were good but a little on the pricey side. We loved the jalapeno rolls. They are sliced up jalapenos with crabmeat and lightly fried. Too die for! Nice decor, recommended!

MY REVIEW: The chefs at Atami take great pride in their presentation skills at the Hibachi table. It is what B*enihana's use to be a very very long time ago. When you walk in you feel like you are somewhere in the Galleria or Downtown, but the prices do not reflect it. The food and service are both very good and the entertainment factor of the chefs is exceptional. When someone tells me they don't like sushi, this is where I go. Although I have had their sushi, it can't compare to Sushi H*ana's. For Hibachi I will always go to Atami's but for "sushi and sashimi" you will find me at Sushi H*ana's. Katy is started knocking at the big city restaurants back door and they better look out!

MY REVIEW: Atami overall is so-so. There are better sushi places in town, but if you want something close to home, this place is better than Sho*gu*n.
Best roll to try: Honeymoon Roll.
Peppered Tuna is great!!!

MY REVIEW: This was the first time I've been here and I must say that I was satisfied with the habichi grill. I ordered the filet mignon and scallops and my wife had the filet mignon and shrimp. The filets were tender and tasty. The food was cooked with the usual habichi entertainment although I've seen better. But then who comes to eat only for the entertainment?
I also ordered a spicy tuna handroll and it was made the way I liked it....with the sushi wrapped all the way lengthwise instead of all the sushi being at the top of the roll. The only disappointment was that the handroll was no served immediately after it was wrapped, and therefore the seaweed wrap lacked the crispiness.
This is definitely a place I would come back again for the habichi grill.
As for the sushi, I'll have to try that another day.

MY REVIEW: My favorite place for sushi and Japanese food in the Katy area! I love the rich decor coupled with the two TVs (one flat screen) in the bar area. You can show up dressy or casual and still feel comfortable. The employees are always happy to see you, prompt to take your order or refill your drink, and able to answer questions about the menu. The sushi is fresh and moderately priced. I have tried all other options in the Katy area for sushi and Japanese food (when Atami was being renovated), and this is the BEST PLACE!
Udon (soup with noodles) is yummy, although our last visit there weren't any shitake mushrooms to be found! I recommend the tempura shrimp udon, because you get a little of everything - some great soup (watch out, it's hot!) and lightly fried shrimp and vegetable tempura. What really impressed me was that I got red bell pepper in my vegetable tempura mix. Many restaurants will skimp on that vegetable because it is more expensive than others. Appetizers are served with a Japanese flair for decorating the plate.
This restaurant not only delivers great food to your table (take out is fast if you can't stay), it does it with a Japanese flair while still catering to American tastes.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I just decided to go since we both love sushi. I will say I've been craving it all week since it was so delicious!!! We've decided to make it a weekly thing. I had the Hibachi scallops and he had the chicken and steak. We also had a cajun roll (my favorite). I substitued the Miso soup for the onion soup....SO GOOD. I think I'm ordering take out tonight.

MY REVIEW: I am a true sushi fanatic from Southern California. I have lived here in the Houston area for a short time and have found very few sushi bars/restaurants even worth mentioning. My husband has taken me out for sushi dinner on every birthday, it's tradition. Well, we weren't sure where to go this year and a friend who resides in Katy told us about Atami. I must say I was skeptical at first but we took their advice and Wow was I surprised! I ordered sashimi as well as a variety of sushi and it was so fresh and delicious I'm still thinking about it. The wait staff was friendly and over accommodating (always a good thing) and I can't wait to go back. Who would have thought with all the trendy restaurants here in Houston that I have found a new place in my heart for Katy and Atami Steak and Sushi.

MY REVIEW: I must say this place is very good. It's been a while since I've found a Japanese restaurant that served food to my liking! The sushi/sashimi was very fresh. I had the Bento Box.. quite a lot of food but not too overwhelming.
A MUST TRY ... the Calamari ... trust me .. it's fantastic!! It wasn't tough or chewy .. just a bit of a crunch and a lot of great taste. another must try.. the Shrimp Tempura.. delicious!
The wait staff was friendly and attentive. She kept making sure our drinks were filled. I LOVED IT!

MY REVIEW: i like to east out and all i can say is wow. how exiting to find a place that was well decorated, you can smoke at the bar and had great food. i think the soup could use more miso (it was kinda like chicken broth) but other than that it was fantastic. get hibatchi filet was exellent. service was a little on the slow side but ok. what about the carpet ??? its a little busy for the modern comfortable atmosphere. hehe great place i am going again tonight.

MY REVIEW: I have only gone once ONLY because of the holiday season. My work environment exposes me to many different restaurants and most of the time the restaurant of choice are japanese. I do consider myself a hibachi/sushi, sashimi conessuier, after working for the Japanese for 5 1/2 years. They have taught this native Texan girl quite a bit. Atami's presentation skills for their food are exceptional. For the american desires they have incorporated the Japanese feeling we americans love along with all of our favorites of theirs. The service and attention to the needs of us patrons is quiet and attentive. Whether you are a newcomer to hibachi cooking or familiar with the style, they take you back to when another popular Hibachi place use to remember the entertainment factor that drew people to their establishment. Atami is a great addition to our community. The environment is very inviting and makes you feel like you are "out on the big town" in our little community. Lunch and dinner prices are comparable to others I have experienced. I do however have a "favorite" "sushi" bar just a bit further down Mason.

MY REVIEW: My mother and I went for sushi before going to the ballet. We were all dressed up and felt very comfortable in the restaurant. The design of the restaurant is beautiful. We started our evening with a wonderful glass of wine and the "Chef Recommended" Calamari and it was wonderful with an outstanding house made hot sauce for dipping.
I have to say that we both are sushi lovers and have eaten it all over town and have found that by far Atami is the best we have tasted.
We had a Skydiver roll-softshell crab, topped with eel and sauce... it was melt in your mouth fresh! We also had a Fry roll- crawfish and avocado inside with snow crab on the out side and it was delicious as well.
Our server was great and it was an overall wonderful experience.
We will go back often and take friends.

MY REVIEW: We went to the former F*uji Gardens for my son's 7th birthday dinner, after having talked him out that Ci-word pizza place.
I'm usually a sushi orderer, but decided to try the Calamari appetizer(labled chef recommended) AWESOME! Great hot sauce with it too. I even got Mr. Chicken only picky eater to try it, and he liked it, although I sold it as chicken like fish...
The place is nicely decorated, our waiter very attentive. I barely mentioned my son's birthday, and they came out at the end singing with a sparkler in a glass of ice cream, and took a polaroid of him in a chef's hat. He was very impressed.
The chef also played all the usual games, egg toss, fake bottle of soy sauce, the shrimp toss to our mouths, onion volcano. My son was delighted during the whole meal, they made him feel quite special.
I had Mahi Mahi, very good, nice alternative to the usual hibachi chicken/steak/shrimp which my wife had, and from my tasting, very good also.
They had the Astros game on the at the bar, a plus, and have non around the grill type seating too, as well as sushi bar seating.
The price was comparable to other like places, we had a great time, and I'll definitely be back to try the sushi next time.
I give it two thumbs up.
