MY REVIEW: What a wonderful treat. I found this little place tucked back in the corner.. What a treasue. Rosie is the owner is perhaps the best cook since my own grandmother. I had the to die for smothered pork chops, wonderfully seasoned veggies, peach cobbler. LIP SMACKING GOOD. Don't look for ambiance, table clothes or candles. What this lady is giving you is home cooked soul food,at a great price with a great friendly Southern smile. I SHALL RETURN!

Do yourself a favor and give this place a try! You can thank me later!

MY REVIEW: The only thing missing from 'The Kitchen' is a place in the back, where you could lay down and take a nap. I ordered my food and broman started pilling it up. When he dished out the cornbread, smoke was coming out the corn bread. I almost fainted, I knew I had to be strong. He read my mind and gave me a big corner peice of cornbread. This place will definitely be a regular stop. I gotta go... I am here at work...I need to see if I can find an empty cube to take a nap.

A good meal is one of the finer things this life has to offer.

MY REVIEW: Today I was in the mood for soul food and after reading the reviews of The Kitchen decided that was the place to go. The others were right - the portions are large, the price right, and the food is great. I had smothered pork chops (two large pork steaks) over rice w/ gravy and two sides of yams and greens w/ corn bread of course for just $6.99. The greens were obviously hand torn and were spiced well. Even the yams appeared to be hand sliced. I'll definitely be returning when I'm in the mood for good comfort food.

MY REVIEW: I must admit that when I first found this restaurant quite by surprise, I was expecting the worst. I ordered oxtails, collard greens and black eyed peas...toes curled. This had to be their best dish, I thought until I tried the pepper steak. Tender..perfect. Since then, I've tried the pork chops, yams macaroni and cheese, creamy, seasoned just right to let you know it's there. The fish plate was awesome, bold spice. The chocolate cake, moist, fluffy, just light in your mouth. Great icing, which makes a huge difference for me.

I have taken friends there who continue to go, and sent family mbrs in town while I was hositalized and couldn't go to bring me a plate from there. Just like the quality of the food, the pleasantness of the staff is consistentenly friendly. I find this to be a choice for me at least three to four times a week. Although they deliver, the atmosphere and the other customers that I've meet there keep me going in.

MY REVIEW: I was driving by on an errand- a neighborhood I am not familair with- at lunch time. I stopped in to pick up some take-out to bring back to work, not expecting much. I ordered the collard greens and macaroni and cheese. They were both awesome! The collard greens were just the right amount of spicy. The macaroni and cheese was wonderfully creamy with an excellent cheese flavor. After reading these reviews, I was sorry I didn't try more. I will be back within a week or two and will bring colleagues!

MY REVIEW: I have been going to the kitchen since moving to Houston from Los Angeles a few years ago. The service and the food is great, I like taking someone new there just to get their reaction and it is always a good one. I turned the ladies at my office on to it and we order there at least once a week. Keep up the great work and I will keep on coming.

MY REVIEW: I first found this place in 2003 and been coming back ever since. The food is unspeakable. I love the smothered porkchops. The portions are huge but the prices is reasonable. I left Houston for a year and when I came back to town my first place to eat was at was 'The Kitchen'. I was surprise Rosie remembered me and greeted me with a hug. These are the kind of places that make eating out an enjoyable experience. FYI - the fried food is cooked to order and very much worth the wait!!!

MY REVIEW: My co-workers kept talking about the kitchen and it's good food. so today I thought I would try it. I had meatloaf, collard greens, mashed potatoes and cornbread. the meatloaf was burned and hard under the bottom, the mashed potatoes were instant potatoes and they were cold, the cornbread was not freshly cooked (day old) therefore it was very hard and when I tried to warm it in the microwave, it crumbled up.but as far as the taste, potion size, neatness, friendly, courteous they were excellent. I plan to return to the kitchen in hopes that maybe, just maybe I just happened to come on the wrong day.

MY REVIEW: This resturant serves some very good meal and the portions are very large. I give this resturant a heads up when it comes to Soul Food. The employees are very nice and friendly. They always have a friendly smile and a very courteous attitude when you visit. I recommend every Houstonian to visit The Kitchen for themselves and taste the good food that they serve. Reggie and Rosie are doing a wonderful job. Please keep up the good work.

MY REVIEW: Man Oh Man the food is sooooooo good. Mr. Reggie and Ms. Rosie sure know how to make you feel comfortable and right at home. On the cool, I love the coupons. I have been in the restaurant to watch the fight, which was complimentary to The Kitchen Soul Food customers. I thought that was a great way of giving back to the community. Try the food. You will like it as much as I do.

MY REVIEW: I am having a very hard time believing what the last two posters said. I LOVE Rosies cooking! I think it is even a bit better than when Tessie was part owner. Southern cooking is pretty much flavored with salt, pepper & bacon or ham. This is not a Cajun place. It is great down-home, slap yo momma good cooking! I have never had a problem with Rosie being not friendly nor witnessed it. She has even added a huge screen TV with cable which wasn't there before. I happen to love the green beans too! I don't know but maybe you were eating at the wrong restaurant? I think Rosie is doing an awesome job with out a partner or any days off. My favorites are her smothered Chicken & Smothered Pork Chops. You get A LOT of food! Enough easily for two meals! The flavor reminds me of true East Texas Country cooking! You can't get it any better than that!

MY REVIEW: Have eaten here before when it was "Tessie's" and since then. The food is mainly still very good and it is plentiful. I like the meats better than the veggies, although they are good for the most part. The main veggie that has suffered since this restaurant became the "Kitchen" seems to be the greens. The desserts are so-so. The most unpleasant difference however, seems to be that since business has grown, the ambience has changed somewhat. The owner used to be very friendly and "perky". These last times I was there she was quite stressed and pretty unfriendly. For an eating place that you send your friends to this kind of change be "bad for business". The "friendliness" was part of the Kitchen's charm. I hope that hasn't soured for good.

MY REVIEW: I just stopped by today because I really had a taste for a home-cooked meal. My mistake...This place has a nice atmosphere and the people are friendly, but the food needs work. The prices are fair, but the food is not seasoned well. They need to learn the definition of seasoning and just peppering your food (which they did alot of). The vegetables were even worse! Have of it you can tell came out of a can. Ex: the mac-n-cheese had hardly no cheese. You could tell that it came out of a box and they didn't even have the sense to add more for flavor and/or presentation. There used to be a place here before called T*essie and before that called F*rankie's. I don't quite understand why they didn't last (besides the location), but "The Kitchen" I'm almost positive won't either.

MY REVIEW: Can't argue -- this is terrific food! I had meatloaf, white rice and brown gravy, candied yams, green beans, and of course, cornbread and iced tea. My husband picked the ox tails, rice and gravy, mustard greens and mac and cheese, and iced tea. We were so impressed, we bought "to go" plates for lunch today -- can't wait to try my beef pepper steak. Husband will be having more ox tails and a smothered pork chop. We couldn't eat dessert, we were so full, but we bought a piece of "Better than sex" and a piece of "Sock it to me" cake for today. Total bill for all 4 meals? $38. We ate there about 3 pm, and basically had the place to ourselves.

We were disappointed that there was no peach cobber, banana pudding or pecan pie. Rosie was working on those for the dinner crowd, though.

Service was great! Tessie is gone by the way, and Rosie is running the place now. Having not been there previously, I can't compare, but it's hard for me to see how the food could have been any better.

We will definitely return - even though it's not near our home. I am tempted to send my husband back today for some Gumbo (Sat & Sun only)for tomorrow!

MY REVIEW: This is Houston's "Hidden Gem"... I have lived in the Houston suburbs for 6 years now and this is the first soul food restaurant that I have visited more than once. In fact, the food is so wonderful, I typically eat there once a week for lunch. It's as close to "Heaven" that I have gotten in terms of an eatery. The greens & yams melt in your mouth. You need no teeth to eat Tessie's meats!!! By the way, just in case you're wondering... I do have a full set of teeth. Tessie always has a smile to share w/ you along with a wonderful atmosphere to dine in while you are there.

MY REVIEW: This is a great soul food restaurant. The food is plentiful, spicy, delicious, and the ladies who serve it (particularly Rosie) always have time for a smile or a comment. It is near my home so I eat here quite a lot though I found it in the strip quite by mall accident (I can never eat it all and always have to take home leftovers). From time to time they even have social events such a poetry readings! Also, I get a kick out of looking at the pictures on the wall of Tessie's satisfied customers.

MY REVIEW: This is the place if you are aching for the true down home goodness that your grandma cooked back in the good old days! You CAN actually taste the love they put into their food! It's all so good! The Turkey & Dressing is knock your socks off the absolute best! Everything is made from scratch & seasoned perfectly! The meats are all so moist & tender too. They have the best potato salad I have found anywhere! Yes they do give you A LOT of food! From the sides, the main meal down to the many wonderful deserts , you won't be disappointed! You can dine in or take out. I normally do take out.

MY REVIEW: I just discovered this place after not knowing I drove past it everyday! It's hidden in the corner of the strip center. I am so glad I found them though! It's kiss your momma great soul food! All fresh, no canned anything! You have to try this place! If you're on a diet, you're going to have to stray from your diet to try it! Everything I have tried so far has been outstanding! I never can finish as they give you so much food! I make 2 meals out of it easily!
