MY REVIEW: I visited t'afia when it first opened and found it loud and intimidating, even though the food was good. During a weekday visit recently, my opinion has changed. Service was relaxed, and the dining area quieter. I felt like our waiter and other staff geniunely cared about our experience - even brought out our friend's birthday dessert with a lit candle. Dinner was excellent. I will be back!

MY REVIEW: Visited last night with my date and was looking forward to this visit based on reading the reviews here and in some local publications. The service was excellent, with the minor complaint that the waiter was not very familiar with how some of the dishes were prepared. The layout of the menu was a bit confusing and there weren't many choices. We both ordered a green salad to start and it was okay, nothing exceptional. I ordered the beef tips with sticky rice and cremini mushroom caps and was not at all impressed with the dish. The rice was not only sticky, it was hard and difficult to chew. My date ordered the seared tuna with mixed greens and apparently she made a better choice than I did. I liked the greens very much and she said the tuna was very nicely done. So, it looks like we have a split decision on t'afia and since I picked up the tab ($$$$), I won't be going back. I didn't see anything coming out of the kitchen that drew my interest so that's it for me. It just didn't live up to my expectations.

MY REVIEW: I cannot say enough about what a great experience my husband and I had at T'afia. It is true that it is rather loud and cramped in the restaurant, but the service and food more than make up for it. We were seated promptly at our 8PM reservation and the place was packed. My husband ordered a Pear cocktail from their menu and I ordered the Ratafia flight. We really enjoyed both, though I only liked 2 or the 3 Ratafia drinks.

We each ordered the tasting menu paired with texas wines. Because I am a vegetarian and my husband only eats fish, the waiter was very helpful in helping us select subsitutions. I really enjoyed the Spinach and Potato soup -- which was a stand out, as was the cheese course with the fig preserves and wonderful home-baked crackers. My husband particularly liked the fried mushrooms and enjoyed his Tomato and Shrimp soup. His yellow fin tuna was exceptional. I didn't care for the portabello and nutcake that I ordered, but will definitely try the baked tofu next time.

We really look forward to going back. It was pretty expensive, at over $200 with tip, but overall I would recommend this place anytime!

MY REVIEW: My husband and I always wanted to try T'afia because of its good reviews and interesting menu using locally grown ingredients. The service was excellent but we weren't impressed with the food. The little pieces of bread tasted stale. I ordered the quail and mac and cheese. The quail was prepared quite nicely, tender, juicy, and flavorful but nothing special. The mac and cheese had no flavor, very bland. It has a good menu but the delivery was just fair. Probably won't go back since we can cook just as well at home.

MY REVIEW: A date night for the wife and me, after impressing my visiting parents into babysitting duties. Showed up on time, and were promptly seated. We said tap water was fine, and the waitress didn't get sniffy.

Cocktails were very good; my wife had a pear punch and I had an herb infused vodka gibson. Appetizers were fried mushrooms and chorizo (spanish) stuffed dates wrapped in bacon. We actually got an order of the dates to go (as a reward for the babysitters). Salty caramelized goodness.

My wife had beef cubes in a balsamic reduction. Spinach wasn't offered as a side, but was gladly prepared as one at my wife's request. I had veal cheeks and braised mustard greens. Awesome. Comfort food *and* fine dining.

The build out was nice (minimalist, bare tables and exposed brick) and the crowd mixed; there were even a few (very well behaved) rugrats. We really liked it, and look forward to returning.

MY REVIEW: Awesome! So Terrific. The food was outstanding and the service very attentive. We went on a week night and discovered that bar snacks are free with a drink order during the week. Too bad because we then didn't have as much room for dinner and everything was so good it was hard to stop eating. Do have the waiter explain the menu if it seems confusing--it really isn't. Also, although the food is very upscale we found the atmosphere, at least mid-week, to be very laid back.

MY REVIEW: What a delightful evening! I loved it! I ate there with my husband and 3 other couples. We were on a mission to eat somewhere new, out of our domestic zip codes and somewhere without children as ours were away at summer camp! We chose T'afia. At first the menus were difficult to understand, but once you broke the code, it was a lot of fun deciding what to order. Some of us tried the Ratafia wine/vodka drinks. Very different and refreshing. The beer-battered crimini mushrooms were a hit! Also enjoyed the chorizo stuffed dates. Most of the table ordered the flat chicken - it looked so good! I ordered the beef tenderloin and ate every bite. The fish also got great reviews. We had a dark chocolate bread pudding and a cheesecake that also was enjoyed by the group. The atmosphere is very plain, beyond simple. More industrial in a very small setting. My husband enjyed his food, but was put off by the decor. He and others found it very sterile and cold. I saw the non-decorated space as an intentional way to let your dinner and dinner companions be the focal point of the evening.

The service was WONDERFUL! Someone was always filling my water glass, clearing plates, even holding open doors as you walked down a hallway. What a treat!

t'afias is definitely worth a return visit for me. Not sure I'll convince my husband of returning, but he's not a foodie like I am. In summary, I'd recommend t'afia for somehting fun and new and if you have a few foodies in the group...even better! You will not leave disappointed!

MY REVIEW: I had dinner at T’afia last night and they have won my loyalty forever. There is so much to say about a restaurant that serves exquisitely prepared local food, includes poetry in their dessert menu, and has a staff that is knowledgeable and goes well beyond traditional good service.

We had the balsamic caramel beef cubes with sticky rice and toasted coconut and the crisp, flat buddy's chicken with milled potatoes and salsa verde. Both had healthy if not large portions and complex flavors. The drinks were unique. With the assistance of our server, we choose the ratafia rocks (wine fortified with more local ingredients) and a mojito. We finished off with some strong coffee and the lightest raspberry sorbet I’ve ever eaten. Well done.

However, the highlight of my evening was when I realized that I had gotten my car stuck in the mud in the dirt lot across the street. The valet, a buser and the host saw my distress and came out to assist me. They hauled rocks and got their hands dirty in the rain to eventually pull my car out and wouldn’t even accept a tip for their assistance.

Note – the valet parking is free of charge. Use it.

MY REVIEW: I took my wife there for her birthday (yes, pressure there!! :) ) and it was a wonderful experience. We had canceled reservations at this place in the past based on the reviews here and now regret not going there sooner. This is a place where unusual, eclectic flavors will be mixed in simple elegance. If you don't like a little adventure in the food you won't "get" t'afia. There are 3 menus - a prix fix, a regular menu of choices and then several options to build you own. The decor is simple "modern tech" but nice.

We started off with the Ratfia flight - this was a great way to try several of them. One was great, one was ok and one we could do with out. But that is why you get a flight and now we know which to order next time. Our salads were simply delicious. Mine was an endive with pecans and bleu cheese - something I wouldn't normally order but it was excellent. My wife's salad of greens with goat cheese was also very good. She had the scallops that were among the best we have every had - large, juicy and perfectly seasoned. I had the salmon with pistachio and burnt orange sauce. Excellent. The bread was different and tasty. We each had a glass of wine from their wide selection of wines by the glass. We ended with the signature chocolate cherry bread pudding - which was spectacular and not overly huge like many restaurants will do.

At the start of the meal they had asked if we had a show or anything to go to and we said yes, we did. They were very courteous and timely and we were out in perfect time without being rushed. We definitely want to take our friends there!

MY REVIEW: I was treated to lunch at T'afia on Friday, December 22nd. The day before I came to this site to read the reviews and have to admit, that I had some reservations about this place, but since I was being treated to lunch by my sister for my birthday, I kept mum and figured that I would be gracious.

We did not notice the "noise factor" that others addressed on this site; however, since it was the Friday before Christmas, it was not overly crowded, plus we arrived about 15 minutes before they opened, and were invited to come in and sit until our table was ready at 11:00am. So far, so good.

The waitstaff was prompt with the menu and explained that the the lunch is Pre fix at $22 per head and includes 3 courses. We selected ribbons of Prociutto with olives for or first course which we both enjoyed. Next we selected the seared scallops with celeriac. This was phenominally prepared. Two huge, succulently tender scallops surrounded the celeriac in the middle of the plate. Celeriac is also called celery root and the kitchen prepared it so that it had the consistency of au gratin potatoes with a light taste of celery. We both loved it! The meal was finished with the dual chocolate dessert which was a small ramekin of a light chocolate mousse with whipped cream followed by another ramekin of exquisite chocolate capuccino gelato. We also had the ratafias which are liken to wine spritzers. I had the red and my sister had the sparkling white ratafia - actually she had two! And I agree with others that they are a must-try. We also had the vanilla tea which was very refreshing.

I must address the portion size about which many others on this forum have complained. The portion sizes served here are what used to be standard portion lunch sizes before "super-sized" appeard on the radar and Americans were 30 pounds lighter. If what you want is to feed at the trough, then bypass this restaurant and go to Ry*n's Buffet. We both felt that we were satiated but not gluttonously stuffed when we left the table. Believe me, if all restaurants served these portions, Americans wouldn't have an obesity problem.

In finalization, I have to say that my initial trepidations about this restaurant were unfounded and the meal turned out to be the highlight of my week.

MY REVIEW: My friends took me out to t'afia for a special birthday meal. When we arrived, we were seated promptly. I liked the modern, open dining room which became cozy and comfortable as more people filled the place and gave it a special vigor which was quite enchanting. Our waiter was very amicable and more than happy to answer all our questions (and there were many since the menu was a bit complicated) and patient with us as we took time to decide on the perfect dish. He was very attentive to our needs and kept our water glasses full.

The little bread rolls brought to the table were simply divine. I ordered a sampler of ratafias (the french-creole type of drink that the place is named after) and they were all absolutely marvelous! I think that was my favorite thing at the restaurant. If you visit, you MUST make sure to try their ratafias. The organic greens salad with hazelnuts, apples, and manchego was okay but was a bit bland and lacking in flavor. I got the ziti with ham, peas, and squash in tomato sauce for my main course. I was very dissatisfied with the dish. For starters, the noodles were overcooked as they were difficult to cut, and even chew. The flavor it produced was not very appealing either as it was a bit salty and completely failed in achieving its potential as a summer pasta. One of my friends got the pistachio-crusted salmon and it was way undercooked. My other friend ordered the tofu with saba noodles and portabello mushrooms and we all liked this particular dish. For dessert we ordered the creme brulee. It was simple, safe, and quite delicious.

This said, I was slightly disappointed with the food. I had such high expectations for monica pope's cooking. I was also rather dissapointed with the chef, as she greeted practically all the other tables except ours. However, I enjoyed my overall experience at T'afia and think that I could have had a better culinary experience here, provided that I had ordered other dishes. Thus, I will give T'afia's culinary skills another chance and will definitely be back to have another marvelous evening!

MY REVIEW: some people "get" t'afia, some don't. for those of us who do, it is pure bliss. i ate there last night; the menu featured a one-time? tasting collabration between monica pope and tyson cole, of UCHI, in austin. It was a fascinating palate of tastes, textures, and flavors that danced and sang in my mouth. the wine pairings were to die for... ending with a marvelous nasturtium ratafia with sake... WOW! i enjoy the look and feel of the open dining room; i did not feel noise was that big of an issue; i came for the food. i'm so impressed i think i'll have monica cater a party at my house!!!!!

MY REVIEW: I think this place blows. It does seem to be catered to foodies, and I really like the idea of it (local foods, creative dishes), but it just doesn't work. The food has been mediocre to decent twice (once I had the tasting menu, once I ordered off the menu and tried two appetizers and two entrees-all mediocre). I loved Boulevard Bistro, it was one of my favorites, and I wanted to love t'afia, but to me it seems more concept and less follow through. I love the modern furnishings and the drink menu, but the place is not comfortable to dine in at all. The wine list is so-so only. Frankly, I don't think I'll go back unless someone else is paying as there are way too many great restaurants in Houston to justify a return. In short, it's overrated, and it is certainly not the best restaurant in Houston as recently voted. I prefer M*ark's, Da M*arco, S*hade, R*ouge, B*ank, even La G*riglia.

MY REVIEW: t'afia is the best restaurant that I have been to in Houston, bar none. We had a nice party of almost all women (20 of us) upstairs and I cannot say enough great things about it: the service was excellent, accommodating and knowledgable, the happy hour food was especially tasty: fresh, local, but not fussy (we all particularly adored the chickpea french fries, but it was all very well done: toast points with goat cheese drizzled with a balsamic vinegar reduction, sashimi tempura appetizer, those little great burgers, and at least five other things that I lost track), and the drinks and recommendations were superb. I have been to Chez P*anisse a few times, but I prefer t'afia. Thank you Monica Pope!

BTW, to the reviewer who did not like the "sushi" appetizer: 1) sushi actually refers to rice in Japanese, not the fish (that's sashimi, which you would know if you really did eat Japanese food, which I admit is hard to do in Houston but even harder in Dallas), 2) I dunno what you had, but that was sashimi grade fish that we had today, and 3) partially cooking sashimi is called searing, which does happen in real Japanese restaurants. I should know, I am Japanese American.

MY REVIEW: Had dinner at T'afia Saturday night. Did the tasting menu. Cannot say enough good things about it. Very imaginative, different, fresh. It has definitely taken its spot in my heart as favorite restaurant in Houston. Only downside to me - the acoustics. But considering how good the food is, I can repeat myself loudly if I have to.

MY REVIEW: I don't know why I didn't leave a review for T'afia sooner. I adore it! By far and away my favorite place to eat in Houston. A definate asset to our city. The Farmers Market is amazing. I will never have a better scone than those @ T'afia!

Happy Hour - best happy hour in town - best food.

Service - it could not be better! Everyone who works there seems so happy with their job - and it shows in the service - amazing.

I have never been disappointed by T'afia and I know I never will be. The food is always fresh, well prepared - and best of all - GOOD!

I've also had their food catered for meetings - in my opinion, in this aspect, they are the best in town also. Good service, great menu.

T'afia is like a dream come true. If Monica and Andrea ever leave Houston - I'll cry!

I eat out quite often and have tried most places in town - T'afia is still my favorite.

MY REVIEW: Monica Pope has a clear understanding of less is more when it comes to exceptional ingredients. Her food speaks for itself with no muss or fuss, it is simply allowing her outstanding food finds, many from Texas, to shine, without overly complicated effort. Today's lunch began with an escarole salad dressed with olive oil, salt, pine nuts and capers, paired with toast points topped with tuna salad. Simple--but over the top. Sometimes ability is not so much what you do but rather what you don't.

Next came thin pounded veal dusted in flour and flashed in olive oil, draped over grits and just cooked spinach, all ladeled with gorgonzola cream sauce. The total number of ingredients for the entree was ten or less. Nothing overpowered anything and all the ingredients spoke clearly.

Desert was a pineapple quince tart with a (Texas) goat cheese and mascarpone mousse with quince/rosemary syrup. Simple and outstanding. Lunch was paired with a Texas wine to go with each course and these all held their own with the great food.

Great time, can't wait to go back.

MY REVIEW: After hearing all the hype about Monica Pope and t'afia, my husband and I decited to go try it. Yes, it can get noisey - so talk loud. Appetizer of italian ham and pickled veggies were very good. I ordered the grilled chicken with pasta and broccoli rabe for the main course. The chicken was fine but the pasta was very underdone (almost hard) and the broccoli rabe was extremely bitter and dry. We wanted to bring a group of friends to try it - but I don't think we will now.

MY REVIEW: Appetizer menu is very good; sage crackers are my favorite. I went on the 'burger night' and got an excellent meal at a reasonable price. Most of the staff will explain anything that is unknown at the menu - overall they've been very good in my experience, I think I must have had different waiters than some others have reviewed. Dessert is also excellent - try the creme brulee or bread pudding.

MY REVIEW: Like any restaurant, t'afia has its good points and bad points. But for me, the good far outweigh the bad. When my group and I arrived, we had to wait a little while (about 10 minutes) to be seated, not something uncommon for a large group of people- we weren't fully sure of a couple people attending, so the host and waiter needed to make sure the table was set properly.

I like the idea of the water bottles at the tables- I drink a lot of water and I don't want to wait for someone to come around with a pitcher for refills. The chairs are really comfortable, and the tables are really nice and soft to the touch. What's more, is that the brushed acrylic requires the tables to be really clean! You can't always tell with wooden tables, they always feel oily to me!

I don't understand why so many people have a problem with the interior- I think t'afia is just interesting enough to look at for a moment, then you forget about it. After all, I go to the restaurant for the company and the food- I don't need something 'pretty' to focus my attention on and distract me from how bad the food is (like at other restaurants). I have experienced how loud it can get in there, but what can you expect with brick walls?

We just went for Friday lunch, and it was phenomenal. Although $22 prix-fixe seemed a little pricey at first, where else would I be able to get a salad, an antelope chop(!!!), AND a dessert for less than $40? It was well worth the price. The menu does have a lot of things I wasn't familiar with, but the waiter was more than willing to explain everything, he even knew most of the ingredients in dishes I wasn't sure about! (You just have to ask, people!) The food was SO delicious, too! The antelope chop had a blueberry-sherry sauce, which sounded weird but was absolutely perfect. The flavors continued to develop as you ate the dish- and she didn't throw the obligatory gigantic-yet-bland carbohydrate-based side with it, just an appropriate amount of celery root gratin. The cuisine has such a wide range of influences, and the fact that the menu changes daily, depending on seasonal availability, really caters to my tastes of fresher, quality goods. I feel so much healthier and invigorated when I eat responsible, organic fare.

I have come to t'afia several times, with many friends and with only my fiance, and I will continue to do so. It's natural for a restaurant this good to be exceptionally crowded, loud, and have a wait for a table on the weekend- hell, S*tar Pizza has waits that last over an hour! Only at a few other places have I loved everything that I have come across on the menu- at most places I tend to only get 'the usual'. I can honestly say that I have never eaten better than at Monica's restaurants.

MY REVIEW: Several freinds and I meet once a month for dinner out - just the girls. This was our first and my LAST visit to t'afia. On a Thursday night, the restaurant was so loud that I could not hear myself think, let alone the conversation of the person sitting next to me. The service was terrible -- it took 30 minutes for drinks orders to be taken and I believe they pressed the grapes because it was a good 20 minutes after that before the wine arrived - not all drinkes arrive simultaneously. The three on the left were served first, the three in the middle ten minutes later and the three on the right last. By the time my gimlet (the only mixed drink at the table) arrived, it was roome temperature. The food was passable, good but not the best I've ever had. All in all, for $ amount per head there are too many outstanding places offering excellent service to waste time retruning to t'afia.

MY REVIEW: I think this restaurant is the most interesting place I've been to in Houston. Monica Pope is brilliant, service is top-notch and attentive to dietary needs, and both the simple dishes (grilled fish) and more complex dishes have a personal touch, allowing distinct and clean tastes to come through. However, if you like spicy heavy handed "blackened" food, this place is not for you. Also, it can be noisy - I prefer to think of it as a festive food celebration. For me, this is the best restaurant in the city and I will be back. The Saturday morning market is great, too.

MY REVIEW: I had avoided Tafia for the longest time, considering it just another product of the hype machine. So, one day I suggested a good friend meet me there for cocktails. She arrived before me and ordered an appetizer of goat cheese and crackers, which she said was good but a bit overpriced (four crackers for four dollars). Considering Monica Pope's reputation as the sharpest chef in Houston and her penchant for local wine, cheeses, charcuterie and vegetables, I had very high expectations. I went during happy hour and ordered the sashimi tuna and salmon appetizer, which at six dollars is definitely not unreasonable. The so-called sushi-grade fish was in fact half cooked-the usual black seaweed roll wrapping appeared to have a soggy tempura outer coating. Half-cooked or half fried fish is disgusting. I frequent several local Japanese restaurants and this attempt at mock sushi was very disappointing. It comes with mustard-roe dipping sauce and what appears to be high-sodium soy sauce. The lounge appetizer menu bills the sauce as orange chili sauce, but I cant see how!

To accompany this appetizer I ordered a West Indian ratafia punch. This points to another area in which the restaurant is lacking-service. The bartender should not be serving food or drinks if he can't quickly tell a customer what each item consists of. I asked him if the drink was sweet and he didn't seem to know. Cocktails are a major drawing point for tafia, and one local reviewer wrote a glowing review of Tafia's West Indian ratafia punch, which is also yellow in hue. To be fair, maybe I should have consulted the review again, but somehow I think the bartender is more responsible than I am because I made a point of asking if the drink was sweet and it was in fact very bitter. It consists of melting pineapple essence which is a fancy phrase for pineapple flavored ice cube. Best part of the cocktail but it isnt really part of the drink and doesnt insinuate itself flavor-wise. I could have done much better at home with vodka and a can of Jupina, Cuban pineapple soda. It is also called pineapple ratafia but I dont know what kind of bland pineapples and rum they are using.

The decor is minimalist and the tables have an annoying tropical striped pattern that oozes pretensiousness. There were too many employees of the restaurant on the floor, and it is hard to tell who does what considering each employee had a completely different style of dress. Considering it wasnt that busy, this seemed to be a total joke. There was no host/hostess at the door when I got there and no greeting either so I cant say I would recommend Tafia for the service. I may try Tafia again for either a salad or dessert but I am not ordering meat or fish from there. I have to say I was more impressed with R*uggles and La S*trada and even J*ulia's which is right around the corner.

MY REVIEW: I loved the modern, minimalist "hip" setting (it felt like I was in another city) but the food was overly-complicated and over-priced to say the least. There were 6 of us, and we all agreed that we will NOT return any time soon. The filet was very good, but not the best I've ever had -- not even the best in the Houston area -- and it the rest of the food was only okay. Given the price, and reputation of the chef/owner, I expected MUCH more from this place. We go out to a 4 or 5 star restaurant about every 6-8 weeks and love M*arks, DaM*arco, or M*ockingbird Bistro so it's not that we only like more simple and/or moderately priced food. In my opinion, this restaurant is like an adolescent -- trying WAY to hard to make an impression without truly knowing (or at least being able to clearly communicate) it's identity yet.
