MY REVIEW: This is a fun, interesting Japanese place that is different than so many standard Japanese restaurants around. Owner (Japanese woman) is almost always there, and she's very friendly/entertaining. There are times when food doesn't come out so promptly, but it's a minor issue on the whole. Nothing wrong with the sushi here, but part of the fun of coming here is trying other Japanese foods besides the sushi. Japanese food isn't just sushi, so try some excellent yakitori, gyoza, and definitely try the "hamachi kama" - it's fantastic!!

MY REVIEW: My friend and I love CoCo's. We went there a couple of times after exhausting Astronomy class))) We always have fun there! They are slow! Decorations remind me of what they show on the movies "Las Vegas Chapel". It's hillarious, and the owner lady is crazy!!! Which makes it all fun! I think the sushi is good and affordable. Oh, and the lady, after taking your order says "HY!" really loud, so don't be scared. If you are craving sushi and want to have a good laugh, go to Coco's, and during the day they are usually empty, so you get the attention you need)

MY REVIEW: The roll that I ordered was not the one that I recieved. I pointed this out to the owner and she argued with me about it. For a first visit, this was not a good first impression.

The sushi was small, the happy hour prices were confusing and were not pointed out to me when when I asked the waitress. I agree with the people who have noticed that the sushi is generally not much better than what you would find at Kroger.

I will not be returning to Coco's.

MY REVIEW: A group of family and friends decided to go to Coco's for a birthday outing. We arrived at about 7 and didn't start to see the appetizers till about 8:30 (This wasn't even the main meal). They were severely understaffed and not prepared for a weekend dining service (despite having booked in advance). We couldn't even order from the second menu because the waitress was the only person who knew how to cook that and she was also the only server for all the tables. The people in the private party room arrived an hour after we did and got all of their food ahead of us. It took nearly 3 hours for my table to get their meals and others in our party still weren't served. And after all that waiting, the food wasn't much better than the pre-prepared sushi served in most grocery stores. I'd strongly caution against Coco's the next time your sushi craving kicks in.

MY REVIEW: This place was recommended by a co-worker and I went with a bunch of college friends. Its a small, quaint place in the middle of a bustling area. They decor was a tad bit shabby but MAN was it delicious!!! There was sushi to please anyone's palette. 5/6 people where first time sushi tasters and they liked it. Albeit, it was a bit expensive for college students but surely affordable esp. in reference to other sushi bars. The owner was very helpful and personable and even offered us Sake! I am definitely going back as soon as i get more money to try more Eel, yellow tail, the shrimp one. Oh BTW the menu could use some pictures.

MY REVIEW: I have been to CoCo's several times and the other review are right on target as they indicate spotty consistency in the service and quality of the food but a lot of that is because this is a small local business and that is why I always come back. It's funny what they say about the music too. The first time I visited they were playing some great progressive house and then all the sudden they were blasting loud crappy old rock music. I just wasn't right.

The decor and condition of the location can be strange, puzzling, and humorous but definitely not formal or "fancy". Check it out. One last thing, be prepared to walk out and go to O*aka instead when you visit Coco's. The reason? There is a chance that you could show up on a bad night and wait a LONG time for service. Like as in you may have to go to the restroom to fill up your water or chase someone down to get your check 20 minutes after you finished your meal, but in all fairness the last time this happened to me they gave us a complimentary bottle of sushi as an apology, so I am still a regular customer! If you like sushi but have grown bored with the generic blandness of most sushi joints check out Coco's in Montrose!

MY REVIEW: I don't even like sushi but my friend just HAD to go for a fix and she took me with her. I liked the other Japanese food so much, I've asked her to take me here on my birthday. For the other reviewers who had bad experiences, remember that its a small informal shop - not a typical Houston restaurant managed by someone with a GM title. The staff is more of a family than a staff and they really welcome you as such when you decide to have a meal with them. My only fear with my review is that I've shot myself in the foot because I know this gem will get more and more crowded the more people like me spill the secret. But its just too good not to share.

MY REVIEW: The quality of the food is as good as those that I eat in (nor/so) Cali restaurants. I personally like Yakitori. The way it is cooked reminds me of home-cooking that I often miss. I thought I could only get that flavour in my home town in Japan.... well, here it is! I wish smoking ban took effect loooong time ago. A cople of customers smoke in the restaurant. oh, well... they only see their own right to smoke and don't care about the rest. oops... of the rail... I bring my office co-workers here almost every other day. I don't mind eating here everyday!!! the owner is great! She does have a minor language barrier so you just have to remember that.

MY REVIEW: The sushi is some of the best I've had in Houston and the prices are very reasonable. I recommend the salmon, unagi, and yellow tail sushi. As far as rolls, I love the J-roll and New York roll. Pretty much everything here is good except maybe the Mt.Fuji and Hamachi (sp?) rolls. But even then that's just my personal taste, I've met people who like these rolls.

The service is also excellent. Takagi-san (Mommy) makes it a point to make you feel welcome and everytime I've been there with friends she makes sure to give us a free sake. Sometimes service can be a bit slow on fridays and saturdays during 7, but that should be expected as this is the peak times for this restaurant.

The only problems I've had with this place, is sometimes the music can be a bit loud to the point where I can't really hear the people around me. But I also like the music they play so it's not too bad. I give this place an 8 out of 10, and I try to come at least once a week

MY REVIEW: Good food, especially the "J's" Roll. The Crazy Roll is good, too. Unfortunately, the service is abysmal. Also this is just a matter of personal preference, but I did not enjoy the Red Hot Chili Peppers new album being blasted on the speakers. Would not ever recommend this restaurant.

MY REVIEW: Ok...so if your looking to have good food, good times, good music, and hot sushi chefs....gotta check this place out! Stong points....the sushi chefs talk!! And they make great Rolls as well. My date and I sat at the sushi bar and were entertained by LT and Steph. Mami the owner even gave us a free bottle of Sake at the end. Wonderful, I would tell anyone to check this spot out atleast once!

MY REVIEW: the new location is fun and different. but the new sushi cooks are not good - everything came apart and the food took a LONG time, they were more interested in talking to each other than creating good food. It took an hour and a half for dinner with three other tables in the place. When I go out for sushi again it will not be there.

This is very surprising and disapointing, the old place had much better service and the rolls were great. I am suprised the lady who ownes the place does not see it.

MY REVIEW: I had my b'day party at Coco's and everybody that I invited were simply impressed. Coco's got to be the best SUSHI REST in town. I went away on vacation and when I came back in July, I went to Richmond to the old place where Coco's used to be and was shocked that it is no longer Coco's. It broke my heart. Then I found out they moved to the new Montrose area and I still have not had a chance to try it out yet.

But based on my past experience, COCO'S is the ultimate SUSHI place in town. Superb Sushi, my fave is the Spider Roll or the Oyster. The soft shell crab is excellent too. Seriously folks, try Coco's and you won't go anywhere else.

MY REVIEW: My wife have been fans of Coco's even when it was just a hole in the wall on Fountain View. We were very happy to see it moving down the street from our home in Montrose. We went for the first time on a Saturday night. It was busy, but not too crowded.

We still think Coco's makes the best sushi in town, hands down. The prices are great too. But this visit was not a good one. Only one sushi chef was working and it took a long time for the waitress to start bringing out our rolls. After we had received about half of our order, the sushi stopped coming. The rest of our order had fallen through the cracks. We had quite a long wait because trying to flag down our waitress, and we eventualy canceled the rest of our order. They staff was very apologetic and gave us a coupon for our next trip.

Do not take this as a bad review. All restaurants have bad nights. My wife are huge fans of Coco's and we will be back. You just cannot beat the sushi and rolls.

The yellowtail sashimi was huge and fresh the spider roll was BIG and the price wasnt threw the roof this isnt ur typical sushi bar though they have good music and several tv's so u watch pretty much anything u want and if you order any kind of alcohol you will receive at least a small hot sake on the house if not a large one, WHO CAN BEAT GREAT SUSHI A GOOD ATMOSHPERE AND FREE SAKE!!! 100% HANDS DOWN BEST SPORT IN TOWN FOR SUSHI

1111 Westheimer Rd, Houston, Texas 77006  713.529.9977

MY REVIEW: Some of the worst sushi I've ever had. I can honestly say the sushi at Kroger's is much better. The salmon sashimi was tiny and not fresh. The sweet shrimp (amaebi) was partially frozen and tiny. Rolls containing shrimp tempura had soggy tempura. The scallop and yellowtail sushi were not fresh. The yakitori was not seasoned well--like they glzed it at the last minute and didn't bother to marinate the meat beforehand.

Plus, the atmosphere was bad because there were seven TVs blaring a football game--it was so loud you couldn't talk to your fellow dining companions. Most Houston sushi restaurants are head and shoulders above this one. Save your money and eat elsewhere.

MY REVIEW: With the move have come many changes, a lot of them very positive. The yakitori menu is no longer secret, although they still have some items you have to know about to order, like the chicken skins, quail eggs and ice cream. They have a new sushi roller with a lot of experience and he has changed the taste and presentation from that of Mami's son. I ate my way through far too the menu and left suitably stuffed and not very much poorer

The place looks a bit sparse at the moment, but as they have been open less than a month, I would give them some time to settle the ambience.

Now if they just had fresh wasabi, everything would be perfect.

MY REVIEW: They've moved to a new larger airier location at the corner of Westheimer Rd & Waugh Dr, in the space formerly occupied by C*abo / Montrose D*iner. The focus was and still is carefully prepared sushi and a few items from the kitchen. The fish is fresh and artfully prepared.

MY REVIEW: After trying all kinds of sushi spots, this place takes the cake! It was a wonderful and affordable! This is not a spot for a date but definatley the spot for someone you feel comfortable eating sushi with. Great to go with friends or someone you've been dating for awhile.

Strong Points: Fish is fresh, the spicy tuna was great, the spider roll was good they even gave us a free bottle of sake.

Weak Points: The only weak point is seating and the atmosphere is not great. oh and the unagi was a little charred but it is very clean and worth a try! Also, they have Kirin Ichiban on draft !

FOOD: Everything is good! Suggestion: The New York Roll is really spicy and good..if you like crab, shrimp, avacodo and spice...this = YUM

MY REVIEW: Wow! Trendy, hip, great food and the decor is very interesting, NOT at all like any other Sushi & Yakitori place anywhere in town! The food was very good, and if you have a chance, order the squid salad! Lightly fried and served over freshly diced cucumber in some kind of tasty brown sauce. Yum! Very affordable prices. The service isn't so hot, true enough, and when a waiter or waitress walks by, you'd better grab them if you need something, otherwise you don't have a chance in hell of getting anyone's attention. But so what? The food and atmosphere is AWESOME, PLUS they have Kirin Ichiban on draft for cryin' out loud!! In a word? SWEET!!!
