MY REVIEW: If you're English and in West Houston, go to the Bull and Bear. It's the closest you're going to get to having a 'local'. The staff are so nice (Kim is our favorite waitress in the world), the food is always good and you'll feel not so homesick. My husband and I have lived in lots of places (oil business) and the Bull and Bear really is one of the good things about Houston.

MY REVIEW: We eat here every Saturday or Sunday for lunch. I love the food and the great beer selection. They have different beer specials monthly so it is a great way to try something new. The bartenders and wait staff are very friendly. The only low point for me is not being a smoker it is very smokey and I HATE THAT.

MY REVIEW: Strong points: Beer selection & prices. Good food especially the tots! Laid back atmosphere. Decent service....need a few more waitstaff though.

Bad points: Karaoke and the music DJ. I leave whenever the karaoke starts as well as the DJ. Both are not needed and all conversations become shouting matches. When I leave, I am usually with 3-4 other people as well. Lost business.

MY REVIEW: Its defenetly a good place to be. The beer is always there and the service is always good too. The atmosphere is perfect when it comes to watching a soocer game, like last year's UEFA CUP final Barcelona vs Arsenal. Soccer its also a weekpoint..since there is no support for spanish soccer games thru FOX sports in spanish, due to their cable channel limitations. Maybe one day they will reconcider and add it to the line up for the good of the sport and their customers....but, there is nothing like stoping by the Bull and the Bear and grabbing a nice cold bear and having a good conversation before going home...

MY REVIEW: i used to go in there all the time. unfortunately they lost 2 bartenders that i had always looked as as kind of the face of the bar. even the soccer fans have mentioned that they are gone. the new bartenders now do a good job but its nice to see a face you know. the food is excellent as always but i miss the old staff. i think anyone that visits will like the place but i just miss the old crew.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I have stopped by there on Fridays after some friends recommended Bull & Bear. Not only did we enjoy the food but met some tremendous friendly Texans that come for karoake - what a show they put on and some unbelievable singing. The waitresses and bartenders were smiling, happy and made us feel at home. We thank you all and will continue by taking friends there.

MY REVIEW: Personally I go for the karaoke, Bull & Bear singers are some of the best in Houston. They are only complimented by the jocks Dave and Vickie.

Food is good, usually large portions. It's a fun place to wind down the week, thats' Friday nights.

MY REVIEW: I don't know why they got rid of poker on Wednesday nights. I love this place and frequent it at least twice a week sometimes more. My favorite thing was the free Texas Hold'Em tournaments. I was dissapointed to find out that on Wednesday they are no longer having these tournaments. The waitress for the poker tourneys is awesome and I always see at least half the players drinking if not more. I just don't understand getting rid of it. Will it keep me from going in again.....of course not. It's St.Patty's day and I'll be there all night!

MY REVIEW: after reading the last review, i believe you were in the wrong place. just kidding. actually i have recently become a regular at this establishment. my main complaint is that the portions are usually huge and i feel obligated to not waste food so i walk out feeling like i am going to explode (with the help of a few guiness) i think you probably did get a new waitress as they had one go back to ireland and another just kind of flaked out. the bartenders are a lot of fun and the waitress that takes care of the poker games is really good. if i were you i would try the place again. i only hope that they open another location closer to my house in katy. with the great review in the chronicle, i am sure the increased business will make a second location a great possibility.

MY REVIEW: Having read all the previous reviews I feel I must have been in a different place. The food was just passable, we ordered fish & chips (very small portion), it was supposed to come with Heinz beans which we never saw and french fries which obviously were not homemade. I think the waittress must have been new, or at least I hope that was her problem, because the service was perhaps the worst I have ever experienced. Not only did she forget the beans, she never asked if we needed refills on our beer. It took a good 15 minutes to get her to bring us the check and she never came back, we had to go up to the bar to pay. Will never go back there again.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I enjoy experiencing new places as we work our way through the Entertainment coupon book every year. Some places are once a year places that we enjoy going back to, but not out of this world, others are once and never again places, and occasionally we find a place that we keep going back to, time after time; coupon or not. The Bull & Bear Eatery is likely to be just such a place. I look forward to going back soon.

With the old book about to expire, we've gone on sort of an eating out "binge" recently. In the last few days, one place was ho-hum, one was "Never Again!", a Mexican place only two blocks away is a new favorite, and so is the Bull & Bear.

Having lived in Europe, the atmosphere struck me as "authentic," for what it's worth. Seems like the kind of place, if I lived a little closer, I might hang out in. Drop by, once or twice a week; that sort of thing. Definitely comfortable.

Since we were on our way across town to an Albert & Gage concert at Anderson Fair, I didn't partake of any tavern offerings. My wife, however, ordered a Margarita, and was disappointed when it turned out to be the ordinary, non-frozen kind. Seemed a bit on the small side, to me. With her meal, she considered a beer. She doesn't particularly like beer, but recent medical research seems to indicate a beer a day could be helpful, so maybe once or twice a week she has one. The waitress was very helpful in suggesting a Smythwyck's, which turned out to be a good choice. I had a sip, and look forward to having a whole one some time.

We ordered our meals from a "Friday Night" flyer, and not the regular menu. I had the T-Bone Special and my wife the Mahi-Mahi. The waitress may have set before me the very best piece of beef I have ever eaten in my life. Only about two or three other steaks come to mind as possible contenders. I've had a lot of steak, but fewer than half a dozen were even memorable, let alone in the same category as this one. This steak was exquisitely flavorful and sublimely tender.

I don't know if it's fair to make direct comparisons or not, but two days after eating at The Bull & Bear, we went to C*attleguard Restaurant & Bar. I wound up ordering T-Bone steak there, as well. It was not a bad one (though other unrelated factors made that an unpleasant dining experience) but -- based on taste and tenderness -- instead of costing a lot more than the one at Bull & Bear, it should have been a whole lot cheaper. The Tavern outdid the steak house by a country mile.

I realize that meat is pretty hard to produce with the mechanical precision of even the cheapest watch, so it's possible the two steaks I had were not representative of their respective purveyors. However, based on other factors that night, I'd say it's a safe bet that any meal served by this particular Eatery will be good.

I don't like fish. Don't dislike it, but generally prefer to eat anything but. I'd gladly order the Mahi-Mahi my wife had. Even her green beans were crisp, yet somehow tender, and uniquely tasty.

It took the waitress a while to figure out we were there, but once she did, everything in that department was fine. And, as already mentioned, very knowledgeable of her products, and helpful in making a selection.

The only thing I could possibly quibble about is the lack of a non smoking section. Another reviewer commented on the efficient air system, so my comment might be nothing more than a quibble. Come to think of it, we were not bothered by the smoke, with smokers all around, so something was working.

All in all, this was a great dining experience. I've checked out other reviews of restaurants, and it's rare to find that, as with this place, everyone is unanimous. Makes me think my next meal there will be just as awesome as the first.

MY REVIEW: Having recently moved from inside loop 610 out to Sugar Land, I've been lamenting the lack of decent pubs on the southwest side of town ... but not any longer. I've found The Bull and Bear and it’s surprised me by exceeding my expectations in just about every area.

Strong points:

1. Beer variety, quantity (20 oz. 'Imperial' pints), quality (freshness), and price (numerous specials and good regular price).

2. Wait staff attentiveness and genuine friendliness.

3. Soccer orientation ... and eagerness of the staff to put a game on for you.

4. Excellent ventilation equipment dramatically reduces smoke.

Specialties: imported and domestic craft beers. Pub atmosphere and food.

Entrees: didn't try. Usually order nachos on most visits...which are excellent. Their choice of traditional British pub-grub, American style appetizers, and full meal entrees (including a variety of seafood entrees) makes for a menu that is exactly what I'd hope for a pub in the USA to have.

Desserts: didn't try. (beer is dessert after all, isn't it?)

Ambiance strong points:

1. Really cool bar (nifty carpentry) that owners obviously invested heavily in.

2. I like the Celtic football club corner, dart area, and presence of two big screen televisions.

Ambiance weak points (which are practically insignificant):

1. No booths ... only tables. Weird, eh?

2. Strip center location.

3. Very new feel. Ideally pubs feel a little worn-in.

I hope it's not crude to compare The Bull and Bear to it's in-town competitors, but if The R*ed Lion, The Richmond A*rms and The Bull and Bear we all on the same block, I'd have a hard time deciding which one to go to. This is a great compliment and places The Bull and Bear among Houston's very best pubs. Great job B&B! I'm glad I found you!

MY REVIEW: i visit this bar quite frequently. i must say that the food is cooked to perfection. i highly recommend the london broil, fish n chips, chicken curry, the ribeye special, which by the way was a fantastic deal for only $10, and their famous pub nachos. the day and night staff are OUTSTANDING, and and are very friendly. a great place to relax and to be worry free. all around comfortable place to dine and have a good time. i will continue to frequent the bull and bear, and recommend you come see it for yourself. A++++++

MY REVIEW: I frequent this pub several times a week and enjoy it very much. My favorite part is the 30 beers on tap. The guiness is always $3 for a 20oz pint and they have a beer of the month for $3 as well. (this month is old speckled hen). They recently addded Stella Artois which I have really been looking forward to. On thursdays, they have all premium beers $3 and domestics $2.50. There is always a nice crowd of ex-pats and regulars that add to the ambiance.

I recently tried the food which was VERY good, i was expecting a 'bar' menu but they have a full menu with steaks, seafood, great chicken dishes, and the expected English food ie. fish n chips, bangers n mash, liver n onions, scotch eggs, and sausage rolls. The food really made me miss home. I would highly recommend giving this place a try for lunch, dinner, or just a couple pints.

MY REVIEW: Great little pub. Over 30 beers on tap to choose from and they always have $3 Guiness and they actually know how to serve it. My girlfriend and I went there on the Thursday night and had 1/2 price pizza and all their beers were either 2.50 or 3.00. It was nice to be able to take my girl out without spending a fortune. I have also had their shrimp scampi and mahi-mahi both were excellent.

The staff was very friendly and efficent and seems to get along well with one another. The place had a definetely had a "Cheers" feel to it. We had a great time and I have no complaints. I highly recommend this pub!!!

MY REVIEW: My husband and I were first time visitors recently, but it won't be our last! We had a wonderful experience: great waitress, good wine & beer (happy hour until 7), delicious breaded mushrooms, and the london broil was OUTSTANDING! We will definitely go back again! Our only complaint (as I also read in other reviews) is the smoke! Better ventilation is needed!

MY REVIEW: I love this place, food is great! The nachos are the best! I am picky about nachos - they layer the chips with real cheese and beans and you get plenty! I have never been disappointed in anything I have eaten here. The atmosphere is very comfortable, people from all ages feel welcome and comfortable. I have date night once a week with my husband, I can go anywhere I want - I choose The Bull & Bear hands down! It reminds me of S*herlock's Pub but for a little older folks! I love it!

MY REVIEW: I am from North London, and have been living in Houston for 6 months. When I have travelled abroad to other areas of the world, or simply around texas I have always found wannabe English pubs. The Bull and Bear definately pulls it off the best, and serves their food with a real English kick. Even as much as the sides are excellent... and it's really cool that they serve Guiness here. I strongly recomend this restaurant/pub if you are English and felling homesick, or if you've missed out and never been to England.

MY REVIEW: The place was a lot of fun, drinks are reasonably priced, however the smoke in the "entertainment/karaoke" side of the place was unbearable. I wished the ventilation was better. The service was ok and the crowd that night was a ton of fun. I didn't get to explore much of the restaurant portion, however I'm interested in checking that out soon.

MY REVIEW: I will DEFINITELY be going back! If you're not looking for this place, you will probably miss it, which is what I like about it. 1/2 bar, 1/2 restaurant, and a good one at that. The drinks aren't watered down and not too expensive. The food is wonderful. Had a salad (HUGE), chicken tenders (actually TENDER), and a combo basket (1/2 fries, 1/2 onion rings). It's hard to find good rings, and it's not very often that I say mmmm about french fries, but WOW! Can't wait to go back and try more. Everyone there is very nice and I am so glad I found this place!! Karaoke on the weekends and two big screens TVs. Something for everyone.

MY REVIEW: I stopped in here with a friend to watch the Texan game and what a great place to hang out and enjoy football. We had an excellent meal. I had the chicken fried steak and there was plenty of drinks to pick from. All in all it was an excellent experience with no complaints. The food was great, the price was reasonable, and there was plenty of selection for this thirsty soul. I plan to come back to watch more football and drink and eat. Couldn't ask for a better way to watch a sports game.

MY REVIEW: i've been going here a lot lately for lunch and the occasional happy hour. the food is a great kept secret. they have everything from traditional british food to steaks and seafood. the daily specials are generally very good and varied. i have not made it through the entire menu of beers yet as there are 30 to try. the staff is good aand seem to have been pretty consistant since the pub opening. i just learned that they have breakfast on weekends and even open early for soccer games. i do have to agree with the previous reviewer that it does get a little smokey at the bar. but again, it is a bar.i am really looking forward to this upcoming football season at this pub.
