MY REVIEW: Awesome food! Great service. Very authentic Puerto Rican food. I am from Puerto Rico, and this reminded me of home. I order a "pastelon" and it was delicious. My boyfriend order "carne frita (fried pork) with mofongo" and it also was amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant.

MY REVIEW: I have loved this place for twenty years or more. Do not order the cheeseburger anymore.

Do, order the authentic Puerto Rican food. From the plantains to the pulled Ropa Vieja and rice and beans. It is delicious food, and cooked with care.

No cheeseburger! And they don't serve fries anymore either.

Mama and Papa are in their nineties now. But the kids are still holding the fort.

MY REVIEW: Each and every time I visit this restaurant I feel like I am in heaven. The food is truly amazing and so authentic. I am Cuban and our food is very similar so I know what I'm talking about. My Puerto Rican friend that lives in College Station calls me every time she's coming into town to make sure I'm available to go with her. If I'm not she just goes alone. She says she feels like she's back in Puerto Rico eating the best food ever.

One of the best experiences of eating at TEX Chic is the friendly staff. Carlos makes you feel right at home. He is so friendly, sometimes he sits with us and always makes us laugh. One of the best parts is Seņora Zori, the little old lady with the cute white eyelet cap, she is the best, so sweet and so funny. It's like eating at home and having your grandma take care of you :). If I could go there every day I would. Just writing this now, makes me want Mofongo (THE BEST IN TOWN) right now. Actually, what the heck, I'm on my way :)

MY REVIEW: I had been in this place many times. The place was sold almost two years ago. The food is still excellent. The prices had been the same for at least two years despite everything elsewhere had gone up. Thank you Carlos.

The rice n beans were delicious. I did notice that if you want salad you have to ask for it, but there is no additional charge. They are doing it to save on the waste. (smart idea). Do not complain for water bottle, have you try Houston water? it is nasty. I prefer bottle water than tap water.

I don't know why the previous comment said that it seems like it they were bothered. Carlos and the staff is ALWAYS happy and smiling to everyone. It seems to me that the comment was made by someone from another restaurant and not a true client. Plates are 12 which includes rice n beans or mofongo. It has always been like that since don teo had it. So your comment is not fair. If you want more than what the plate includes, you should pay for it. That is like that everywhere.

MY REVIEW: I would say, that the place is small (4 tables at the max). However, when you go in there remember that this is how places in Puerto Rico are set up. They are small but very authentic in flavor (on the island).

I would say that the Bistec Encebollado (Steak and Onion) tasted like it was straight from the island. However, there is one major drawback and that is the yellow rice and beans. The yellow rice and beans had more of a Mexican influence, meaning the taste is nothing like the rice and beans made in Puerto Rico or in any Puerto Rican restaurants in San Antonio.

I would like to suggest Carlos to offer Pepsi products instead of Coke products because Pepsi products complement the meal. I was also disappointed when they had no maduros (ripe plantains).

MY REVIEW: Been there many times....today was the first visit since new owners took it over. Food was delicious. But the old owners gave salad and bread with the meal. None here. We had baccalao with mofongo....they did not tell us the beans and rice are extra. With no drinks for 3 people, the meal at lunch was almost $60. They never even said thank you when we were leaving. For water they brought bottled water, another extra charge. We felt as if we were intruding in someone's personal lliving room. Would never go back.

MY REVIEW: Well they used to know us as regulars but since the new people have taken over, we haven't visited as often, this is one of our FAVORITE places to eat mofongo, well actually now the ONLY place! The food is excellent, my husband doesn't agree but i taste a difference in the mofongo, since don teo doesn't make it anymore, but nevertheless it is still delicious! i don't stray far from my usual, fried pork, rice, beans, and mofongo, but my husband has pretty much tried it all & especially likes the bacalao. we would definitely visit again, but we have to pace ourselves since it is a bit pricey.

MY REVIEW: If you're looking for delicious, authentic Puerto Rican food in Houston, this is the place to go. The food is a little bit on the pricey side, but I think I can speak for everyone when I say that the food is incredibly filling. It is most definitely worth the price. Don Teo and Carmen are not there all the time as they used to be, but you can still see Teo coming in and out of the place continually throughout the day. The food is still as good as ever, if not better. :)

MY REVIEW: My husband and I love this place. As soon as you walk in, you'll feel right at home. Sadly, Don Teo and Doņa Carmen (owners and cooks) are not there every days as they used to. The mofongo is very good, but now that there's another lady making it, instead of Don Teo, is not the same. Service and the rest of the nemu is still as wonderful as always.

MY REVIEW: Just like eating in asmall mom and pop n Puerto Rico. All I can say is that the moment you enter, you will totally feel at home if you are familiar with the Caribbean/PR way of life. If you don't speak the language, it is ok just as the previous reviewer said. But if you do, even better. I had the mofongo con carne frita y arroz con gandules. Best mofongo I have had outside of what we make at home. Same goes for the carne frita. This is a real gem here in Houston. I can't recommend this anymore than I already have. Cant wait to go back and try the pollo guisado or the chuleta. Highly recommended.

MY REVIEW: This is a very small restaurant to start with. If you don't speak the langue don't walk away. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If you never had Puerto Rican food this is the place to go. It brings you back to the island its self. Home cook food and hot off the stove like its supposed to be. I haven't had food this good or seen it in houston, before I came hear. I'll be sure to make my family and me a part of the walls if I have to.

MY REVIEW: Ok, so here is the wonderful deal about this place: after reading the great reviews about this place I just want to share my own experience which every single time I go to Tex Chick has been great!!!

First of, they have been accepting credit cards, including American Express, for a while now, so don't worry about paying in cash.

second, the place actually sits 15 people (a reviewer had said 14) - let's not forget about the stool in the back, towards the little hallway :-)

third, as for having to stand in line, you just have to know when to go. Since my family and I are regulars we now know to go before the lunch crowd arrives and if we can't make it by 11:35am, then we wait until about 1pm to go. We haven't had to stand in line in a long time because we try to time our arrival. That's not to say that I wouldn't wait, of course I would - the food is that good!!

also, the comment about "closing the door behind you" - yup! don't forget to shut the door as you come in or out. Or if you notice that someone left it ajar, then extend your hand and shut the door (that will definitely make you look like you are a regular patron there :-)

So, make sure to try the mofongo. I also recommed the fried pork (the best I've eaten anywhere in Houston), the "pollo guisado"...well, everything is good, so go try everything!

Enjoy!

MY REVIEW: WONDERFUL place, FRIENDLIEST service, DELICIOUS food. Like eating at your Mom and Dad without having to do the dishes... : ) The owners were very accommodating when I told them that I am a vegetarian and went out of their way to prepare a special plate for me. It consisted of To-Die-For Mufongo, fluffy rice, perfectly cooked beans, pigeon peas, chick peas and since I was not eating any meat they included a scrumptious flan on the price of the plate. IT IS A SMALL PLACE, it accommodates 12 people, so my suggestion is to get there early or be VERY patient, because it is ABSOLUTELY worth it.

MY REVIEW: Quaint and Delicious!

My daughter and her hubby found this place a year or two ago. It is worth standing in line for a side of mofongo with gravy along with any of the entrees. We love it all.
