MY REVIEW: In a nutshell, the service was fine but the food was horrible, and not just the pie. They were out of several standard items that this kind of place should never be out of (bagels, for example). Their food lacked flavor and was overly greasy (both omelets that were ordered came slathered in oil but had no flavor).
My daughter ordered a piece of blueberry pie - what she got looked - and according to her tasted - like an HEB version of a Sara Lee frozen pie that had been left out a little too long. In a word, disgusting.
My first visit to the House of Pies was nearly 8 years ago, and was a truly great experience. I've been back a few times since then, but this last visit was, well, my last visit.
Finally, we were a party of 6, which made for a very tight squeeze. Groups of 4 or less should have no problems, other than the horrible food of course. What a shame.....

MY REVIEW: My wife and I have been coming here for years, and it's one of our favorite places for breakfast. I have noticed some negative reviews here, mainly concerning the pies. Well, we never order any, so I don't know about that. The non-dessert items are always dependable, though.
It isn't that there is a "wow" factor with any of the menu items. They're just all done well for what they are. I think that's what keeps people coming back. There's a stability to this place with both the dishes and the friendly staff that you know you can depend on. My favorites are the huevos rancheros, sausage scramble, and eggs benedict. During the week you can get a deal on plain old eggs and potatoes with toast and a meat choice or eggs and pancakes (just order of menu- "special" breakfast 1 or 2). Amy loves the club breakfast (eggs your way with French toast) with potatoes your way instead of meat. They never fail to satisfy and service is pretty dependable and friendly. We love this place!

MY REVIEW: Love the look and style of this place. Lemon Icebox is my weakness. Waitstaff here is usually hit or miss; either I love 'em or don't care too much. Good place for a first date I think.

MY REVIEW: I have been to the other 2 locations and have always been delighted with the pies and cookies. I went to this location which is franchised and the pies were horrible. (don't know about the solid food). I got a chocolate chip cookie which was hard, dry, and inedible. I was happy to see the huge portions I got on 2 slices of pie to go. The Bayou Goo was not the same that the other 2 locations serve. It was 95% custard and whipped cream with about a teaspoon of chocolate - very disappointing as I had made a long drive anticipating this usually exquisite pie. I also got a slice of pumpkin pie and it was bitter from either not adding enough sugar and/or not enough condensed milk. It was inedible too. The prices were about 30% less than the other 2 restaurants, but for bad food, it was a total waste of my time and money.

MY REVIEW: Went for dessert recently. Was not impressed with the Key Lime Pie. It was flat and mushy, not firm and it was a terrible shade of green, very unnatural. The person I went with had the Turtle Cheesecake. It was a huge slice but very bland. It had nuts, chocolate, caramel, but it was all just bland devoid of real flavor. Coffee was typical diner coffee, nothing to write home about. We should've gone to T*he D*essert G*allery which is about a block away.

MY REVIEW: I'm surprised I haven't come here more often than I have. A few years ago I came with a group after the bars closed, and really can't remember what I ate. But I certainly will remember the hamburger I had here for lunch last Saturday for a long time. It was just about perfect. The big patty was hand formed and well seasoned, and just juicy enough. It was delicious, as were the fries. My friend also had a burger with the cottage fries and he also raved.
But the best part was that this was a 2:00 p.m. lunch on a hot afternoon, and the air conditioning was so refreshing. And the place wasn't very crowded, so the service was really fast - but warm and friendly as well. I will soon be back to try a piece of one of their yummy-looking pies.

MY REVIEW: Been hanging out here for almost 19 years. Solid diner food, exceptional pies. Only gripe I have is the hourly charges if you don't order. I can understand if you ordered coffee only and then sat there for 4 hours, but if you've ordered a meal and then linger over it for a couple hours, they still charge 2.50 per person hourly. Pissed me off, but I will keep going back - I always do. Expect a wait after the bars close and for weekend brunch. In general, great waitstaff.

MY REVIEW: House of Pies is a place for people watching, especially after 11 at night. This is the place for young gays, as well as Goths. Between the two groups you can laugh and groan all night long. But be prepared to wait - the lines are long.It is known to gays as the House of Guys, because so many come here after the bars close. And the waitresses are super - they bring your food almost as soon as they take your order. They will customize your order to yourliking. No problem with substitutions - just ask. The O'Brien potatoes with breakfast are wonderful. Pass on the bisquits (must be bargain basement premade variety). Get the English muffins instead. Hamburgers and Club sandwiches are good and the fries are first rate. Skip the more complicated entrees. The fudge pecan pie is a chocolate lover's dream - and with vanilla ice cream it will fill up the biggest trucker. Take a pie home - We have done that for years. They are some of the cheapest good pies in town. Simple food donw well. LIke any diner don;t come her for gourmet quality.

MY REVIEW: House of Pies is really good...their strong points are the terrific food and the nice waitstaff...their weak points is the decor. It's old...but in a way, isn't that what a diner is supposed to be like? The food is going to keep me coming back. :) When I am eating, I could care less about what the restaurant looks like.
I really couldn't tell ya what they are famous for, or what their specialty is, but I will tell you what my boyfriend and I like to order. We normally order the cheeseburger. I don't know if it's because we like burgers, or we like the taste of these, who knows...it could be a little bit of both, ok. So, we get the cheeseburger along with a side of cottage fries that are these cute little circles of fried potato. The burger is cooked just the way you order it, and the cottage fries are out of this world. I also like their vegetable soup, it's about as close to homeade as you can get. Salads are fresh and flavorful here, even the ranch dressing tastes like it could be homeade. The chicken tender dinner is huge, but filling and delicious at the same time. They first start you out with a fresh bread, then bring you a salad, then they bring the entree, you have your choice of two freshly cooked veggies, and your choice of honey mustard or ranch. I like both of the dips, but honey mustard is the best, no question.
Their desserts are great here. I have had the french silk, bavarian cream, bavarian cream banana...and our favorite is the french silk, it's got a great crust, the dark chocolate is the first layer...and it's everything you'd expect, then next it's followed up with a creamy chocolate base, topped off with whipped cream, and chocolate candy shavings. :)

MY REVIEW: Although the Hamburger was great in taste, I didn't like the atmosphere. It seemed very old and reminds me of a Diner on the side of a road when your traveling thru the country.

MY REVIEW: Mom and Pop live here. They both own the joint and eat at it. The place is usually filled with regulars swapping stories over delicious, juicy burgers or their delicious breakfast served all the time. I love their HOP breakfast--2 eggs, 4 slices bacon, crispy hashbrowns, and two large belly busting hotcakes served with real butter and warm maple syrup. The coffee is always fresh medium brew served in old-fashioned roadside diner brown mugs. The Patty Melt is tasty and loaded with tomato slices that will sog it up if you don't eat it quick. Ask for honey mustard as a patty melt dip. The Regency Club is another winner. Pass on the CFS and the French Dip. Don't, however, pass on the pie. The Strawberry Pie is great. Pass on their cream pies (the cream has an old, stale, smokey taste) but the fruit pies and meriengue pies are wonderful.
