MY REVIEW: my wife and I are avid sushi eaters from L.A. We looked you up online while in town and dine in last night. We had asked our waiter what choices was this restaurant known for. And so we ordered the Crazy Irishman, Red Devil, Patriot Rolls, and Yellowtail sashimi. Great Great Food! Everything came out so decorative and service was top notch. Much thanks to our waiter and the guy that brought us the food for patiently answering our questions about the sushi. Thanks Azuma and would recommend for anyone visiting houston.

MY REVIEW: I havent been to the downtown location in about a year but never had problems until tonight. As I approached the hostess stand there was already a swarm of people standing in the front. I finally realized that these were not customers but friends of the staff hanging out. I believe it was a manager that attempted to greet us. Our party of two walked in at 9:30 and he looked at his watch and said, 'we close early sometimes". Umm..ok, whats your point? The restaurant doesnt close until 10 so if there are customers then shouldnt they stay open? He just stood there and looked at me without any explanation on why. We werent there to have a feast, just wanted a couple pieces of fish but apparently that was asking too much. I use to be an Azuma fan but not anymore. I wont even go to the Kirby location because I dont feel the need to support a business that treats their customer this way. We eat sushi weekly and I'll be happy to spend my money somewhere else.

MY REVIEW: Strong points: good sushi, several interesting and cool items such as Kobe Beef served on a sizzling rock.

Weak points (and there are many): Service ranks dead bottom out of all the sushi places I have been to in Houston and elsewhere. We arrived around 9PM on a Sat. night, place was all but dead. Took someone 20 min to take our order and it wasn't even the waiter we had to pull the manager over to take it.

Food was fine, but then came the bill. We asked for divide the check between two couples and the waiter refused saying that he could divide it in his head and did not want to do this on the computer. He comes back and states that he has messed up on the calculations and that he needs 4 dollars cash. He was very rude about the whole ordeal and earned himself a dollar tip. Then said waiter has the nerve to open the check and say that we have wronged him for giving him a dollar. I then reminded him that he didn't even take our order, and that he messed up our checks, and that he was lucky to get a tip at all. He stormed off mumbling. I don't know if I will return, I plan to call management today.

MY REVIEW: Working downtown has proven advantageous to myself and corporate friends who have had the pleasure to dine at Azuma's (909 Texas) here in downtown. The food has always been top notch and the service beyond compare. I have already scheduled to have lunch for my birthday with friends this coming week (2/29/08). I would strongly recommend anyone who likes Sushi or Sake to give Azuma's a try. See ya this week....

MY REVIEW: How much can I applaud this place? My third time here for dinner and food drinks were excellent as usual. A must try is the Crazy Irishman and Shitake Age. Yellowtail Collar was cooked to perfection. Our waiter much compliments to him for such great service and for being attentive to us. A must try for beginning and experience sushi lovers everywhere.

MY REVIEW: Poor, Poor Service. So bad we didn't even eat. I called on Friday to make a 5pm reservation on Sat. The hostess answered with "maybe". Ok, so maybe we have a reservation? She then went on to say someone will call you Sat morning to confirm we can seat your party. So I'm supposed to tell my group, well we may have reservations for an early dinner at Azuma, but I can't be sure until the day of when they call to confirm....

Well they didn't call until 5:30pm asking where we were! I gave them an ear full and told them we'd gone elsewhere and won't be back.

MY REVIEW: I'm irritated at this place. I went with my boyfriend for my birthday. We arrived on a Wednesday night at 8 oclock, we didn't leave till almost 10 oclock. We sat down immediately, yet I think it was almost 8:30 till we actually got the chance to order... we somehow had like two waiters yet they kept passing us by, and it was obviously we were ready to order.... it was probably 8:50 till we got ONE of our appetizers and that was a cup of miso soup and then almost 9:20 till we got our second appetizer and then all of a sudden everything was loaded onto us at once. The service was poor took FOREVER and it wasn't even packed restaraunt! Our table was small so it was hard to eat. Im never going back there. There are way better places to eat sushi than that place, especially for the price.

MY REVIEW: My friends and I like to eat sushi a lot ... I mean A LOT! ... We have been to this restuarant many times and have noticed a decline in the service and attitude of both the staff and management... To put it mildly ... very rude...and could care less whether we ate there or not ... wow? The sushi was nothing special and we were surprised when our dessert was served before we were even half way through with our meal ... what? .... We are not ready for the red bean ice cream yet. We will not return to this place unless we feel a real need to be insulted again.

MY REVIEW: Always give a second chance, and this was their last.

The ambiance was a Disneyfied version of the Japanese restaurant experience, hitting all the cliches and somewhat over the top (do we have to have a spotlight on the rock garden?). Sashimi was raggedly cut, in one case not even into well defined pieces, just a mess of fish (although credit where it's due: it was high quality fish before being massacred by the chef). Sushi pieces on the overlarge size, and one piece still had a small piece of fishbone on it, which is completely unacceptable. Wasabi wasn't fresh, despite the waitstaff's claims to the contrary. Even the water had that musty smell associated with standing too long. You can get better sushi for the same price down the road in the Village proper - or you can get the same quality for a lot less in many supermarkets. We won't be going back.

MY REVIEW: HERE IS THE DEAL: I eat sushi every week n Houston. Every week, A different restaurant. I KNOW Sushi and Sushi Restaurants. Last week, we went to Azuma. The restaurant was crowed, so we put our name on the table list and sat down at the bar to wait. Because there was a 20 minute wait, we decided to order sushi at the bar. We waited 15 minutes at the bat, however, but got no service. Finally, the sushi chef asked if we wanted a drink. We ordered a drink, but after more waiting we decided to just go to a table because the bar was noisy and the service was so poor. The waitress finally came and we told her we were waiting for our drink and the table to be ready. She told us that we needed to wait at the bar back of the restaurant, since they wanted to serve sushi at the bar. There was NO bar seating at the back of the restaurant and I was in a leg cast! Clearly, the waitress was quite insensitive. After standing in the back and continuing to wait for the drinks, we decided to leave. Prior to leaving, we talked to the manager about the situation after more waiting. The manager offered NO Apology and was disinterested! Bottom Line - Customer Service was VERY poor. Skip this place

MY REVIEW: Went with a friend to kill some time and told our waiter on the front end that we will be having several smaller dishes. We started with the spider roll and the shiitake age. It was very good, don't get me wrong, but roll was too large and only cut into 4 pieces. My friend had to eat one slice in 3 bites. I thought it would have been better as a smaller roll or maybe more slices so each slice is easier to eat as a single serving. The shiitake age was very good and I would recommend it to anyone eating at Azuma. It is a tempura-fried shiitake mushrooms stuffed with shrimp and calamari.

Next we talked to our waiter about fried rice, since it wasn't on the menu. He went and talked to the kitchen and had them prepare some combination fried rice, along with an order of the beef robata. I truly think fried rice is always one of the things that shows any flaws or brilliance in a restaurant and the fried rice here is almost better than Beniha**. Very Good! And the beef robata was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy.

We tried several items on the menu and left stuffed w/ leftovers. The fried rice was a little pricey, but worth every penny and our food tab was less than our beer tab. We did have several bottles of Sapporo and Kirin, but all in all, a very nice first experience at Azuma.

Try it and you'll see.....

MY REVIEW: My son took me there for Father's Day. We love sushi and like to try different places. When we arrived, there was a line waiting for a table so we sat at the bar. Since my son has eaten there several times before, I let him do the ordering. We started with the Sushi Pizza. It was messy to eat but tasted good. Next, we had an order of "Hot Rock Beef". This is several thin slices of seasoned beef served with an extremely hot rock. You place a small piece of butter on the rock to prevent the beef from sticking and then place a strip of beef on the rock to cook the way you want. Before eating the strips, you'll want to dip the strips into one of the sauces served with the dish. I preferred the light brown mango sauce. Very tasty! Next, we ordered an "Angry Irishman" and several pieces of salmon and tuna sushi. The sushi had great flavor and you could definitely tell it was fresh. We finished it all off with the fried bananas and ice cream with coffee. The dessert was not that great. Overall, I enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The service was a little slow but they were very busy. I understand why my son likes to eat there so much. I recommend them.

MY REVIEW: Azuma downtown - nice restaurant, great atmosphere, friendly enough service, etc...

However, the sushi were just disappointing, and the rolls were average, at best. The prices weren't completely outrageous, but certainly did not reflect the quality.

I've definitely had better sushi, and only see the reason for going here to be for a date, or a good impression - because it seems very scene-oriented.

MY REVIEW: First time here! Went early on a Friday night, good thing because around 6:30 it got REALLY busy. We sat at the bar, which was great cuz the sushi chefs were so entertaining to watch! The place is not cheap: specialty rolls start around $10, but VERY tasty and VERY fresh. I will definitely go back when I'm in the mood for good sushi!

MY REVIEW: GREAT GREAT fresh sushi!!! They weren't rated #1 in Houston for 2006 for nothing! They are not too pricey, very resonable, worth my money. Great atmosphere, too, if you don't mind being in a crowded place with up-beat music in the background (they are ALWAYS busy, even on a wednesday!). Very romantic at night. Service was good/attentive/really nice. Will DEFINITELY be coming back. It's like an addiction!

MY REVIEW: I am a great fan of sushi and try to experience new places in every city that I vistit. During my documentry visit at Rice University I decided to check out Azuma on Kirby. I must say I very impressed by the layout of the restaurant and the presentation was to die for especially the mochi. Most restaurants you have to sacrifice either food or service. Service was amazing!! I had a server by the name of Tan, he was quite the entertainer, deffinitely had a passion for his work. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who has a plalet for sushi!

MY REVIEW: The freshness of their sushi is some of the best in town. However, their service is less than ideal. During my most recent visit I was overcharged twice and had to dispute the charges with my bank. The previous time I ate there the waitress didn't return my credit card and I was several miles away before I realized that I would have to return to the restaurant. It's a bit overpriced but wouldn't matter so much if their service wasn't so mediocre.

MY REVIEW: The sushi is good, the service is getting progressively worse and I don't think I'll be going back, there are too many other good choices in Houston. My husband and I do enjoy the food, the rolls are good. However, the service is just horrible. We went yesterday with a group of 10. We had reservations for 7:30, there were no people waiting, but our table was not ready until almost 8. Then we were told there was a minimum of $250 we had to spend on food for a party our size (we had a couple who just wanted appetizers and several vegetarians) Our bill came to $230. We figured we'd order some desserts but were told they were out of desserts and if we had wanted dessert we should have told them we were seated (who does that??!!). Even the manager was rude and unhelpful. This is the worst of a string of rude experiences.

MY REVIEW: A few friends of mine been to the kirby location before and because I work closer to the downtown location, I decided to give it a try. It took a little longer than expected, to get seated when I came with 3 other co-workers for lunch one Friday morning. The hostess was not as friendly as she should have been and after leading us to the table, she just threw down the menu's and just walked off. My friends and I all ordered something off the lunch menu because everything else seemed to be too pricey. We did try a few of their rolls, which was actually okay. The crazy roll didn't look too appealing to us though. The pink soy paper that it was rolled in was very soggy. Our waitress was very attentive, and she always came by to refill our drinks each time our glasses were halfway empty. When she greeted my friends and I she introduced herself as Jenny and told us the special for the day. Overall even with the bad first impression from the hostess, we would probably go back and hope that the next waitress we get is as attentive as our first.

MY REVIEW: Great sushi, terrible service. Do not attempt a lunch "hour" at this restaurant. We (party of 3) got to the restaurant at 1:00. Not very busy. We were promptly seated and greeted by our waitress. Our beverages were served and we were able to place our orders in an adequate amount of time, by about 1:15. We were served our salads. Waited. Waited some more. Still no entrees. We asked the waitress to check on our orders because we were running out of time. She stated they will be out in "two to three minutes." Fifteen minutes later, still no entrees. We asked to speak to the manager. He looked in our direction and then walked in the opposite!!! Very rude. He finally came to our table and arrived about the same time as our entrees (1:46). We asked that our food be boxed to go and for the check. The manager did knock 25% off the bill, but it was still a very disappointing experience.

MY REVIEW: Being an avid sushi eater, I decided to give Azuma a try since I heard that their sushi was good. The establishment is nice with a nice ambiance and decor. I went on a Wednesday evening around 6pm before the baseball game. After the hostess showed my guest and I our way to our table, we weren't greeted by the waitress for at least 10 minutes. She finally took our drink orders and seemed to disappear for another 15 minutes. We finally placed our orders and received our food in an okay amount of time. The sashimi was fresh and served on a bed of ice, although it was way overpriced for the amount that we got. After 30 minutes of eating, our drinks were never refilled, and the waitress never came back. We had to flag down the busboy for our bill. The waitress wasn't happy to be working there and it reflected on her service. I don't think that I'll be back anytime soon.

MY REVIEW: I am Japanese and I know about Japanese food. The last two vists were pretty good and I took my boyfriend for his birthday. As soon as we entered, the very rude hostesses started ruining our night. The $20 sasimi plate was not impresive. His favorite dish katudon was way too salty. Nearly $100 spent for two to feel unsatisfied. We will not return.

MY REVIEW: I was quite surprised by the lovely decor. A look at the menu and I was a bit disappointed by the high prices, but what I got (Red Devil and Crazy Green Irish) was well worth it. I was shocked at how delicious it was. I do not know why there are so many complaints, but I had great service. I had Lem at the Texas location on a Monday evening at 7:30 when it was peak time and he was very attentive.

For those of you who like sitting at the bar, this one has a nice one.
