Fonda Dona Maria Authentic Mexican Restaurant
120 Tidwell Rd, Houston, Texas 77022
MY REVIEW: We eat here from time to time. Usually get the margaritas at happy hour and green enchiladas. Both excellent. However, where the restaurant really excels is breakfast, more specifically the egg dishes. The huevos Mexicanas or con machacado are the best I have had anywhere, including all over Mexico, the Valley and San Antonio. And cheap and large quantity. Go there.

MY REVIEW: I really like to eat here. Good food for a great price. I love the tipical mex drinks they have like lemonade, horchata, watermelon, pineapple mmmmm. Try it you won't be disapointed, and the neighborhood is not terrible at night, some people overreact.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I have been here after dark and have had no problems. We tried this place after someone from Mexico raved about the food. We have been back several times and we have never been disappointed in the quality of the food or the service. The menu is extensive and it does help to speak some Spanish. The grilled shrimp are delicious and served on a sizzling platter. We are working our way through the menu one visit at a time.

MY REVIEW: If you are looking for authentic mexican food with a true authentic atmosphere, then this is the place. Went there for the first time tonight and will go back very soon. Many reviews talk about the area. I have seen areas worse than this. Typical north side neighborhood off the beaten path. A good understanding of the spanish language is a plus at this place, but if you know the basics, you will get by.
The fahitas are very good, as well as the "Tex Mex Enchilada plate".
I saw a dish come out which sold for $3.95 that went to a table close by and it looked very tasty. After speaking to two different workers there, finally figured out what it was on the menu. The menu is in both english and spanish, but if you want to make sense out of it, spanish really helps on this. Otherwise you will miss out on a lot of fine food.
Definitely will go back soon. Been eating out for quite some time now, (51 years old) and found this place to be one of the few authentic mexican restaurants this side of the border. If the neighborhood bothers you, go during the daytime. But at least go there and try it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

MY REVIEW: Always good, always fresh. I live in the area, and trust me "the nighttime is the right time" this neighborhood is not as bad as some places that I have lived.

MY REVIEW: Where else can you go for lunch and get fajitas, charro beans, rice, and guacamole for under $5.00. The food is great the wait for service is short.
If you go during happy hour they have great tasting margaritas and for a good price.

MY REVIEW: The big thing for us is that they are open quite late.
Good food at good prices. Menudo on the weekends. The location is indeed "interesting" but we've never felt unsafe going in there. It seems to help that we speak some Spanish so we haven't had a problem with service at all.

MY REVIEW: Strong points would be food. We had the carnitas which are served on Saturdays and Sundays and the chicken enchiladas verdes with margaritas on the rocks.
All the food was very fresh and very well spiced. This meal was as good as any we had in most Mexican restaurants regardless of cost. Margaritas were well made with none of the gasoline smell that cheap tequila has and no chemical taste to the lime mixer. (I think they actually use fresh lime juice). Margaritas were really smooth and we didn't order the top shelf version that you usually have to do to get this good a margarita.
Interior done in lots of bright color and tile work.
This restaurant is on our definite return list. Enjoy.

MY REVIEW: Strong point is price - the lunch menu is under $6.00 typically.
Weak point is perhaps location - not for me after dark.
Ambiance is old neighborhood Mexican food resturant with lots of beautiful tile. I noticed the specialty drinks of lemonade, rice water, etc, which look quite refreshing. The lunch fajitas are a steal.
