MY REVIEW: I had to make an hour drive, but decided to make it based on what everyone has said on here.
We were not disappointed. The chips and salsa were good, as were the cokes. We decided to order the queso flameado with beef fajita. It was amazing with the salsa! Unfortunately, we had to order 2 more tortillas because 2 was insufficient.
After that, we both ordered South of the Border enchiladas (variety of enchis) All were very unique and delicious in their own way. We had to have dessert. I had to the sopapillas and they were fresh, hot, and sweet, as they are supposed to be. My friend had the flan. He said that it was just as good or if not better than his mom's; in other words, GREAT!
Overall, it was well worth the drive and I want to make that trip again soon!

MY REVIEW: I don't like to use superlatives like "superb", "terrific", "outstanding", etc. unless they're really warranted but I'd have nothing to say if I didn't. Although this was my first visit I simply couldn't find anything less than outstanding about Sylvia's.
I went at lunch time and the place was starting to fill up. Sylvia herself suggested I sit at the bar and left me in the capable hands of Marivel who suggested I try the South of the Border, a sampler of four enchiladas. The presentation, like everything else, was superb - four enchiladas accompanied by a separate plate with beans and rice. All of the enchiladas were delicious - but the Puebla, a chicken enchilada covered in mole sauce, really stood out. The other three enchiladas were each outstanding in their own way. All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. The beans and rice deserve a comment as they were not simply plate fillers but were very good. The rice had a nice garlicky touch to it and the beans were creamy and flavorful.
Marivel talked me into the Chocolate Tres Leches cake, a very generous slice of goodness, for dessert. It was not cloyingly sweet like some I've had before and was the perfect ending to a delicious meal although it was big enough for two.
What can I say? Service, ambience, food, value - it was all good. BTW, as a frequent lone diner, I am sensitive to the level of service I get and I'm happy to say I felt very welcome at Sylvia's. I'll be going back which, considering I live in southwest Montgomery County, is saying a lot. It was a trip well worth the drive.

MY REVIEW: I am so glad I finally convinced somebody to try Sylvia's. This place is delicious! I have not had a bad meal here, granted I've only been twice, but we all shared so we could try more.
The Picomole (think guacamole mixed with pico) and Queso are great starters. I don't even like Queso, but it's original here and very tasty. If you love Mole, try the Puebla Enchiladas. Their mole is homemade, not like some other places! My absolute favorite are the Enchiladas Rojas. They're filled with fresh Mexican cheese. In fact, I've tried 7 different types of Enchiladas (some just a bite shared from a friend) here, and they have all been some of the best enchiladas I have eaten. The refried beans and rice here are actually quite good, too. It's not often that I actually eat them at other Mexican places. I've never had room for dessert, all though I have longed for it!
Try Sylvia's, you won't regret it.

MY REVIEW: Very good food ...consistently good on each visit. We have tried weekend breakfast twice, but not the pancakes...so, we have to go back and do that. Only minus is that we need a much bigger bowl of salsa to keep the young lady from wearing herself out by refilling it. I think their salsa is good enough to buy extra to take home, but why bother, just come back to eat there.

MY REVIEW: Sylvia is the Enchilada Goddess of South Texas. Our favorite is Mexico City (Name of enchilada) but her Chicken soup rivals any Jewish mother's and her Huevos Rancheros kick ass! The aforementioned coupled with her specatacular homemade pancakes start our weekend off right - every weekend!

MY REVIEW: We have visited Sylvia's several times in small groups as well as large groups and awlays have consitantly awesome service. The waiters are always very attentive and seem to be really enjoying themselves. It's a delight to hear them humming along with the lovely spanish music. Fun bright and cheerful atmosphere is so nice. The food is awesome as well. The menudo is the best in Houston!!! I would highly recommend Sylvia's, Ms. Sylvia herself was nice enough to come greet us as well.

MY REVIEW: Food is very good. At best, service in our area was lacking, especially for a Wednesday night. Drinks were served promptly but a long lapse of time to order our entrees. Waiter never came back to see how we were doing. Had to ask for the bill and also requested to see a manager. Our waiter waid the manager was on the phone and could not come to our table. On our last visit, some months ago, same lackadaisical service. Unfortunately third time will not be a charm as we will not go back.

MY REVIEW: Great atmosphere, comfortable and liked the home touch. Being our first time: Didn't know, if one was to sit or wait for someone to direct one to the table. Finally the gentleman, at the register looked at us and told us to find a table. Restaurant not full and service at table was great, with a plus.
The pork enchiladas lacked more meat, for meat was tiny. The chicken enchiladas were awsome, reminder my son of my chicken tacos. The chips and salsa were terrific. The chocolate cake was to die for.
A little far, from our home, but will be back to try other things on the menus.

MY REVIEW: After much debate about where we could eat GOOD Mexican food along Westheimer, I remembered reading about Sylvia's in a recent review, and we decided to take a chance and eat there.
And we realized we stuck GOLD! We were promptly greeted and seated by the hostess. The hot salsa and chips were a delight, and the waitress made sure we never ran low on the welcoming "appetizer." Looking at the menu we were amused by the names of the dishes such as "McAllen" and "Mexico City." We ordered the Lubbock Beef Enchiladas and Crystal City Spinach Enchiladas - THE BEST THAT WE HAVE EVER TASTED!
While enjoying our food we admired the decor which included a personal touch of family photos of Sylvia. To our surpised we were greeted by Sylvia herself which was a true delight! We are tempted to try the fajitas next time, but even more tempted to order the enchiladas. And we MUST save room for dessert. We will definitely come back.

MY REVIEW: I had the Laredo, enchiladas featuring a chili con carne sauce, and really enjoyed it. It brought back memories of enchiladas from cafes in small towns throughout South Texas. And that's a good thing.

MY REVIEW: Nice Mexican style decor, the place is kind of loud but pleasant. More a family atmosphere than a date place.
The food was pretty good. I loved the rice & beans, the beef fajita tacos were very tasty, and the cheese enchilada I had was decent. The only food item I found disappointing was the queso - it was runny and bland. I compare this restaurant to El M*atador which is a favorite of mine a couple doors down - the fajitas are about equally good, the rice & beans much better at Sylvias, the queso much better at El M*atador.
The prices here are not horrible - better than Pappasitos but more expensive than El M*atador.

MY REVIEW: Sylvia's has THE BEST enchiladas verdes, they are soo good. My husband loves the carne guisada, its been perfect everytime. The tortillas, salsa, and flan are also great! We recently moved to clear lake but we try to go at least once a month, its worth the drive. Great place to take out of town guests. Love it!!

MY REVIEW: One thing to further mention is, Sylvia's has become very popular with vegetarians as there are numerous dishes that are meatless. Additionally, her frijoles refritos are never made with lard, so it's a perfect eatery for those whose religious convictions prevent the eating of pork. Though I will say, her carnitas and other pork dishes are mighty tasty.

MY REVIEW: Sylvia is a real person, and her restaurant is real fun to dine in, and the food is REALLY, REALLY GOOD! I met two friends there tonight and it was there first time to eat there. THEY ARE COMING BACK! Primo is from El Salvador and he complemented the way the pork was presented in his "HIDALGO" (Enchiladas e Carnitas)- it was the way it was prepared in his home town. He also was impressed with the refried beans and the rice - they were complimentary to the Ecnhiladas, not competing with them. (For him, the standard of excellence is the way in which the pork is prepared, cooked and presented. Sylvia's was "excellent"!) His wife, Prima, ordered the "WESLACO" (excliming with the same coments about the rice and beans and added her own statement of appreciation for the sauce), and I ordered the "HARLINGEN"... Two hours later and my stomach is wonderfully satisfied...but my tongues craves more: I wish I had room for something else on the menu! (SPECIAL NOTE: the corn tortillas are hand-made in the back!) We even ran into friends there who didn't know that the "other friend" knew about Sylvia's... Something special about the location: it is about 10 miles outside the 610 Loop (on Westheimer) and about 10 miles from Richmond...for us it was meeting in the middle! (Previous visits were for Chili Relleno [my "taste standard"] and "Guadalajara...both rated excelent!) The bad news: she offers over 40 varieties of enchiladas, PLUS...and they are not open 24 hours a day so you can just sit there and eat!

MY REVIEW: Sylvia's is incredible. The food, service, and atmosphere is great. First of all, Sylvia is ALWAYS there and not just walking around, but greeting guests, working the host/hostess stand, and checking on each table. The service staff is also very attentive and always sure to keep the drinks and salsa full. Now for the food, I had the "San Miguel" chicken enchiladas with creamy suiza sauce...SO GOOD! The best I've ever had. The sauce had some heat, but not overpowering. The table salsa is amazing. It's served warm and has a great flavor without being too spicy. The refried beans are the best I've had as well, so flavorful. I strongly recommend Sylvia's for great food and wonderful service.

MY REVIEW: I've been gradually cycling my way through Sylvia's menu items, tasting everything and in the 4+ years that I have been eating there have not found one thing that I didn't love. Sylvia's excels at HOME-STYLE Tex-Mex as well as Mexican food. All of it is prepared from scratch the proper way using fresh ingredients when you order it..no reheated pre-prepared dishes. It makes a HUGE difference. Want to learn how to cook Sylvia's way? Attend her cooking school. The class is a great value; Sylvia is an entertaining storyteller, students always take home real skills and get well fed as part of the class. Here's a surprise - In addition to other fabulous home-style Tex-Mex breakfasts, Sylvia's serves up a memorable PANCAKE on the weekends...so memorable that some of her regulars have suggested that she add "and PANCAKE" to her restaurant name. Of course Pancakes are Tex-Mex...They're the "Tex" part !

MY REVIEW: I am not a big dessert eater...but I could be. Sylvia recently talked me into trying the chocolate tres leches..... and I will never forgive her for feeding my sweet tooth! It is my favorite combo of chocolate and cinnamon served in a portion that will leave you enough to take home for a midnight snack! My mom and I have started stopping by in the afternoons after running errands together for a treat we both love to share..... great coffee, great dessert... great break in the middle of a day of fighting traffic and running errands! Cant help but leave feeling better about the world after a break like that!

MY REVIEW: WE WERE STARVING! We had been there once before and liked it but ONG!! now we love this place!! The enchiladas are great, really south Texas style but the chili rellenos floored us! THEY ARE TOTALLY ADDICTING... it seems there is ALEAYS something new and great tasting there to discover! We love the atmosphere..it changed from the cute tea pot collection to the great nativity scenes... obviously Sylvia has a great respect for her hertiage and this is reflected in more ways than in just the great food she serves!

MY REVIEW: My sister and I were hungry and the reviews of her enchiladas made us even hungrier. The atmosphere is sorta different for an enchilada place -- lots of little tea pots all over -- reminded me of a coffee shop. The service was quick and the place was packed. The chips were stale and the salsa sorta yucky. My sister and I both ordered enchiladas and really I don't think they were worth remembering.
Wouldn't recommend visiting for the enchiladas or the (lack of) ambiance.

MY REVIEW: Mama Sylvia, please go to P*appasito's and get us some good chips, salsa and tres leches. (Sylvia's chips are to tastless and thick; the salsa is bland, we got our waiter to bring us some hot salsa which was better. Tres leches the cake is good but too dry; where are the tres leches? Please put some stuffing in the spinach and vegetarian enchiladas; charros beans were so GOOD. Dios margaritas and you'll be three sheets to the wind.
The place was packed, service and food was good, reasonablely priced and I was stuffed. This was only my second time to Sylvia's, I will be going back so often "Everybody will know my name."

MY REVIEW: After reading the reviews my husband and I gave Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen a try. We were not disappointed. The food was wonderful! The service was great; we didn't have to wait for a table at all. Sylvia herself even came by our table to see how our meal was...I had the pork enchiladas...very yummy. We will definitely be coming back.

MY REVIEW: I recommend Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen. I am pleased to advise that the kitchen is very consistent in what they are putting out and that many of the dishes are wonderful. Terrific hot sauce, rice and beans.
They have a lady whose sole responsibility is to make the corn tortillas. I've always felt that the best tortillas in Mexico are in Oaxaca. Although they do use Maseca at Sylvia's (as do most tortillerias in Mexico these days), I am amazed at how good a tortilla can be when made by the right hands.
The favorite dish and the one I am recommending is the El Paso, which consists of stacked tortillas with melted cheese and a rich red sauce made from puree of dried chiles. You can get it with ground beef and/or an egg on top.
The chocolate cake tres leches is consistently good.

MY REVIEW: GREAT restaurant! The enchiladas verdes are out of this world delicious. Margaritas, salsa, rice and beans are also very good. And save room for the tres leches cake if you can, it is the best ever! Staff is very friendly. Their prices are a little higher than other Mexican restaurants in the area, but you get great, authentic quality in return.
