Standard Sweets and Restaurant
5696 Hillcroft St, Houston, Texas 77036
MY REVIEW: I've been going to this place for over 12 years, through it's change of ownerships, change of tacky bright wall colors...and have to say they really are one of the cheapest and overal tasty hole in the wall joints in houston, though not always reliable. the dosas are usually good, sometimes they are way too oily, so you may want to ask for it to be extra crispy. indian cafes are never known for overly friendly staff so get used to shabbily dressed servers who don't smile much. also, leave your design and style sense at neiman marcus, shrug off the total lack of ambience. roll up your sleeves and dig into their ridiculously inexpensive food, if you don't like it at least it's under $5.

MY REVIEW: Quick frankly I don't know what Sam is talking about. I regularly eat at Standard Sweets. I always find the staff very friendly. I enjoy the inexpensive buffet as well as the delicious Dosas. This is one of the best buys in town for all you can eat for $3.50 vegatarian. I love the sweets also.

MY REVIEW: This place sucks. The staff is not good. THey are not friendly. While we were eating dinner they removed all the items and when we asked they said its closing time and they have to remove it. THen why in the first place they allowed us into the restaurant after closing time. When asked they bought some stale rice and stuff. I do not recommed this one.

MY REVIEW: Hours: 10:00 A.M.-10:00 P.M.
Brief Description: Boy, I really like this place. Their calling card says, "Best in the World". Well, that may be stretching it, but, for $3.00, you can get a great vegetarian buffet featuring spicy curries such as a yellow, almost mustard-y curry with crispy pakoras in it, a mixed vegetable navrattan type curry with big chunks of fresh cauliflower, spinach curry, and more. The naan and pappadums which come with the meal are baked to order and served hot out of the tandoor. There is also an option to add a couple of meat curries for one dollar more. Food is self service, so there is no tipping.
In addition to the buffet, this place has take out, and an extensive menu of additional dishes to order, parathas and dosas for about $2.50 each, for example. Huge trays of traditional Indian sweets, mostly confections made from natural fruits and thickened, sweetened condensed milk, are everywhere. This place must do a big catering business for parties. They even have fresh paneer (a simple cheese made by boiling milk and then straining off the milk solids by adding lemon juice, alum, or vinegar) for $5.50 a pound.
When you go to the register to pay, grab one of the cute little carved toothpicks and try one of the burfi's (Indian sweet).
