On the River Restaurant
919 W 2nd St, Freeport, Texas 77541
MY REVIEW: We literally stumbled upon this quaint restaurant, and what a find! We are not big eaters, so did not order any of the attractive appetizers. As a matter of fact, we were ordering "light" for our dinner. We both ordered gumbo, which comes with a side of cole slaw, and cornbread baked and served in a small cast iron skillet.
STRONG POINTS: The gumbo was SUPERB!!!...the best that I have ever tasted! This same comment holds true for the coleslaw and the cornbread.
WEAK POINTS: The waiter told us (I am assuming because he was pre-dodging comments which have been made to him previously) that this was a great "light" dinner as you get only 3 ladles of gumbo. He was right. I would call what was served as a "bowl" of gumbo, actually the size of a "cup" of gumbo. The price was around $10. Not bad considering that there was shrimp, sausage, and crab in this delicious gumbo. The problem....charge me 3-5 dollars more and give me a decent portion size. Without the cornbread and coleslaw, we would have left quite hungry. PLUS....the dish was SO delicious, that you just wanted more! To top it off.....the waiter forgot to bring the coleslaw & cornbread until he was asked about it. Whaaaaaa???
Will we return? ABSOLUETLY!!!!! We may, however, ask is we can pay more to receive an adequate portion.

MY REVIEW: I have been in there twice this week, on business. I had the Grilled Chicken dinner, the first time, and Chicken Fried Steak the second. The chicken was tender and juicy, though I didn't care for the seasoning. Very well cooked, though. The chicken Fried Steak, was the best CFS I have ever had. It beats all of the restaurants in Central Texas, and everywhere else for that matter. No fat, no grissle, just tender steak. Wonderful. They just need mashed potatoes...

MY REVIEW: I recently retired from a Company in the Freeport area, and ate lunch at On the River 2-4 times a month. Fast friendly service, good food, and attractive prices make this one of my favorite restaurants in the Brazosport area.
The owners recently opened a second restaurant in Lake Jackson, called R*ivers Point. Almost the same menu and you still get the skillet of sweet cornbread, coldslaw and pickled onions to munch on while waiting for your meal. Being closer to our home, this is now where my wife and I frequently eat supper.

MY REVIEW: I used to travel to South Texas often, and still miss their Deep Fried Dill Pickles.. an odd combination but AMAZING in taste! The crawfish and other seafood was among the best I've tasted North American wide.

MY REVIEW: The Best Seafood In Brazoria County! This place is an outstanding choice for mouth watering fresh gulf seafood. They also serve fried dill pickle slices (one of my favorites), hot cornbread in an iron skillet, and their coleslaw is unmatched! Reasonable Prices and a great atmosphere make this restaurant a must visit when in Brazoria County.

MY REVIEW: This is one of my favorite seafood restaurants. In addition to the great fried shrimp and oysters that taste like shrimp and oysters, their collard greens and cornbread (served in an iron skillet) are a must and are unusual for a seafood restaurant. The coleslaw is served family style in a large crock pot and is good ... I don't normally care for coleslaw but this one is good.
My family swears by their fried catfish. Personally, I go always for the shrimp, oysters or flounder.
Be sure to save room for their homemade peach or blackberry cobbler with ice cream. They are also very good.
