Avenue Grill

MY REVIEW: I had jury duty and decided to try Avenue Grill. Big mistake.I paid $10.25 for a small lunch that consisted of 4 small pieces of dried fish, fake mashed potatoes and cold greens and a salad plus I only had a glass of water. This place used to be packed at lunch but since the price went up and the quality down I guess people are going somewhere else.Never again.

MY REVIEW: I certainly understand the old-time appeal of this place, and the peach cobbler IS to die for. But frankly, the rest of the food is marginal to average. My CFS, gravy, veggies, and mashed potatoes all lacked flavor (salt and pepper helped). CFS was also tough. However, our waitress was very good and friendly, and you really can't beat the atmosphere. Will go back for breakfast soon.

MY REVIEW: Great tasting, home cooked meals. Small old fashioned cafe. The servings are generous and the menu is set everyday of the week which today is TURKEY DAY, can't wait!!! The food temperature is good, and dessert is always available. The waitresses are consistant and not there for fun, (tipping). I have no complaints other than paying $9 somethng for lunch without a drink !
Again, the portions are big so you definitley get your money's worth. . .

MY REVIEW: What can I say, it is my home away from home. I start my day there with breakfast and it is always well prepared. Service is very good. Most importantly, I love the meat loaf and eggs, but it is an off menu item that is not always available. At lunch, the Chicken N Dumplings and peach cobbler are to die for.

MY REVIEW: Been to lunch twice - good homecooking; nothing spectacular
Breakfast - have tried them three times; obviously the AM cook likes to get the orders out fast - done correctly or not!
He/she keeps the grill too hot; the hash browns are very brown but raw and almost mealy inside; the "over medium" eggs are always browned around the edges but runny inside - NOT Over medium - have had to send them back every time.
Decent coffee - and they let you peruse the local paper for free.... but just cant go there anymore unless the AM cook lowers that grill temp and cooks breakfast slower but DONE! [I know about this - used to help in a diner as a kid]

MY REVIEW: When they say " best chicken fried steak " I know from personal experience it to be true!!!! ( So does Texas Monthly Magazine) I make sure to get there early for lunch because the peach cobbler goes fast. Mr. Tony runs a great business and the hospitality is bar none!!! Great prices and the plates are Full of food!!!!

MY REVIEW: I had jury duty yesterday, so a few of us walked over to the Avenue Grill for lunch. They have a menu from which to order, or you can go check out the steam table, and eat from there. Everyone was very happy with their selections (two of us ate from the steam table and two off of the menu). Another plus is that they give a 10% discount to people serving jury duty.

MY REVIEW: I have been going to the Grill since 1979 and still go every now and then even though I don't work downtown anymore. The food there is country/homestyle cooking that will be familiar if you grew up in Texas. It's a cafeteria style place with waitresses who tend to your drink and bread needs (very attentive folks). There are usually half a dozen entrees such as pork chops, chicken fried steak, meatloaf, liver, chicken & dumplings, etc. Accompanying all of this are a variety of vegetables like mashed potatoes, corn, greens, green beans, pinto beans, etc.
This is not heart healthy, weight watcher, low carb food we're talking about folks. If you want a salad you need to go somewhere else. If delicious, filling, country style comfort food is what you crave, then this is the place for you.
They also serve burgers and other grill items from a menu, and they have a full service breakfast menu in the mornings. They open before the sun comes up (I think 5, maybe 6 at the latest) and close by 3 PM. The people sitting around you will include cops, firefighters, judges, lawyers and blue collar folks of all types.
You can't eat like this all of the time or you'll be rotund. But, if this is the kind of food you grew up eating then you will find that the grill is hard to beat.
