MY REVIEW: Let me begin by saying that I rarely discover an institution for which I have nothing positive to say. Unfortunately, China Border is just such a place. I visited this restaurant with a friend on March 31, 2008. I had never visited one before, and I was eager to sample their dishes.

Upon entering the establishment, I was immediately overwhelmed by the immensly claustraphobic atmosphere. Words such as "cramped" or "crowded" do not even begin to describe the bedlam which greeted me. Small rooms, large crowds, and lots of noise --- I felt like I had been transported into the Cantina Scene, out of Star Wars.

The food, itself, was just short of terrible. They had nothing that you could not find better prepared at most other Chinese-style restaurants (i.e. such as China B*ear, or Woodlands China H*ouse). Furthermore, the variety of dishes was very limited. Sadly, the "best" dish they had to offer was the enchiladas.

Yes, I know.

I would whole-heartedly advise any Chinese-food lover to steer clear of this establishment and go elsewhere (the China B*ear restaurant is very close-by). All-in-all, Mikey definitely does NOT like it.

MY REVIEW: I've eaten here since about 1995 and have almost always ejoyed it, especially the shrimp and beans. However, the management has changed. The food has been Tex-Mexized so that I burned like crazy next morning on the toilet (I will spare you the detailed description), and the shrimp (also TEx-Mexized) no longer had any flavor. In addition, although th lone waitress thanked me as I left I gave no tip because no one appeared to refill my water glass or remove dirty dishes the entire time I was there. They've reduced the staff, the remaining staff/managem,ent mainly stood around and chit-chatted with each other, and the place was largely empty, in comparison with a year ago (I hadn't been there since Dec., 2006). So, forget it.

MY REVIEW: Don't bother coming here. For years it was a nice place for a great lunch and I came about once a month with friends to enjoy the great variety. There are still lots of things to eat but many foods are not hot, others have been sitting in the trays too long and are hard and crunchy when they shouldn't be. The egg rolls are overcooked, other items are tasteless and favorite waittresses have all been replaced in an apparent change of ownership a few months ago. When I was there in late September, instead of being full of patrons during a 1 PM lunch, the place was nearly dead. It's too bad.

MY REVIEW: I am from the Beaumont,Tx. area and like many was evacuated for a while due to Hurricane Rita. My children and I stayed in a hotel in Houston and tried out many restaurants in the area. China Border was by far our favorite, great food and excellent, friendly service. I would highly recommend it.

MY REVIEW: Having been visiting this location since it opened, I have not only seen it's serving areas, buffet line, and menu expand hugely, I have also seen a sad decline in the quality of the food. When the sushi bar sports maguro and sake that have been sitting long enough for the surface to dry out and become dull, I'm concerned. Allowing dishes to sit on the bar long enough for the top layer to dry out and a heavy skin to form is icky.

Service is generally very good. We have had iffy service, but generally during or just after a heavy peak period.

If you catch them directly during a lunch or dinner rush, you are in for a treat. In between times, don't bother.

MY REVIEW: As an American of Chinese descent, I have never really been that thrilled with Chinese buffet. I consider it Americanized Chinese or Mexican food. I was right with this buffet restaurant. The pepper steak and fried fish ball is great. The sushi has a wide selection. Yet, the taste was average. However, I was ambivalent to the rest of the food. I give it a C+

MY REVIEW: I highly disagree with the "bad" comments stated below. This restaurant has a lot of authentic chinese food, is very sanitary, and has very nice service. I will definately keep coming.

MY REVIEW: When China Border 1st opened it was great. I love chinese food and I ate at least once a week. Mostly twice a week. The staff is very friendly and I have my favorite waitress. My visits have declined tremendously. China Border should change it name to Chi/Mex Border. There is as much Mexican food as there is chinese. If I wanted porkchops w/ jalepenos I'd go to C*hilis. If I wanted corn, onion rings, french fries i'd go to S*onic or L*ubys.

Last year I decided that I would stop going because one of the buffet table has no and i mean NO chinese food.

MY REVIEW: What can I say but the food was masterful (for a buffet) Their salmon fillet was cooked while still attached to the skin just to keep all of it's natural juices in and to keep it flakey without charring it. All of their food was well seasoned and very accesible the best time to go is during the lunch hour when it is only about 5.99, the food is delicious and the service is buffet style. They have many people to serve so don't expect that you will get too much special attention. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind eating fresh sushi all day for 5.99

MY REVIEW: Very good selection. Watch out for the shrimp area around dinner time. I've seen people actually piling a mountain of shrimp on one plate, where as they scooped, only more fell off. I like the egg rolls, and their pepper steak. Someone said something about the cashier at the other location. I know who you are talking about, she is like the Matriarch of the place, she's quick about grabbing your money, but not quick about making the change. Probably had a tough time on the mainland, who knows. Overall though if you can put up with hoards of shrimp bandits, then you'll like the place.

MY REVIEW: The food is wonderful. My personal favorite, Pepper Steak. But all the food is good and it is always fresh. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, but the cashier is not very pleasant. Never smiles and does not say Thank You!
