MY REVIEW: My husband and I went to Todai (Dinner time) based on the views read from previous patrons of this restaurant. The place had a nice setting but the food was horrible. If you like your beef steak meat bleeding and close to raw, this is the place for you. The waitstaff were prompt in seating us, refilling drinks at my table, and taking away old plates. But when asking the waitstaff if the meat staff could cook the steaks a little more, he said yes but the meat staff only brought the ribeye out that was cooked one time, then resumed back to raw meat as usual. My husband and I are not fans of sushi and were only interested in their seafood and meat selection. They only had like 5 seafood items and as for the meat, my husband and I only saw like the same cuts of meat: (Quail (cooked), Ribeye (cooked initial time, but second round was practically raw and bleeding), sirloin (alright but not great), beef kabobs (Tough meat, it stretched but refused to tear when cutting with a knife), and bacon wrapped chicken (cooked but alright) being passed around and not the various meats (rabbit, bbq, etc.)bragged about by their website. At the end, my husband and I felt like we gave them 79.00 dollars (73.00 for food + drink for 2 people and just $5.00 tip because the waiter could not get us cooked meat after saying he would) just for the drink refill and the rice and teriyaki chicken that were edible at best. Do not waste your time or money, if you want good meat, go to F*ogo de Chao, if you want Japanese food, go to a Japanese restaurant, if you want seafood, go to a Seafood restaurant. This restaurant seems to be the jack of all trades and the master of none. Their food is awful and not worth $10.00 per person.

MY REVIEW: Heard about the changes (Churrascaria meat and ambiance) at Todai and wanted to experience for ourselves. I was celebrating my birthday. We were very satisfied with our previous visits and were looking forward to the improvements and were very impressed. A plus service and the meats came out on a regular basis probably because it wasn't that crowded that night. Only the chicken and pork were a little dry. Down side, the crab legs were not up to par but okay. And I wanted some green tea ice cream and oysters and they didn't have any. Everything else was about the same as we remembered. Because of the price, would recommend it as a special occasion thing.

MY REVIEW: Not bad for the price. The sushi is fresher then before. Ambiance is relaxing especially where I was sitting (booth). The rodizio meats were a plus. Service was friendly as usual. They could use a bar though. Good experience overall.

MY REVIEW: Decided to go this evening based on the below review (brazilian food) and boy was it a mistake.

It started off bad...we never got the green/red card for the food. Finally got it after 10 mins.

Food started to come out slowly, the lesser cuts (sausage, quail, chicken, heart etc). My wife tried the quail and hated it.

Things started to slow down alot, food coming out every 10-15 mins.

I was pretty frustrated, and after being there for over 1 hour, i asked the waiter to get me the "spectacular" ribeye. Waited another 15 mins, nothing. so i asked for the check. After getting the check, the ribeye comes. Tried it and what a letdown. It was totally tasteless.

The best 2 cuts i tried were the kabobs and lamb chop (only had one, they never came back). Think i only tried 6 of all their meat.

I am totally disappointed and will NEVER return.

If you are looking for brazilian food,i would avoid Todai...you have a much better bet going to the other better establishments.

MY REVIEW: I haven't been to Todai for some time. Last week, I saw the ad on Houston Press that Todai is now featuring Churrascaria. I am a sushi addict, but being an Argentinean, my first love has always been south american BBQ. So, I decided to give it a try and have to admit that there was a little hesitation since it was hard to imagine that a restaurant specializing on asian fusion and seafood could really do good churrasco. Anyway, many steak houses and churrascarias in the east and west coast are adding sushi bar in their restaurants, so I knew it wasn't completely unusual.

As I walk in, I noticed that the entire restaurant setting changed and it is not what Todai used to be during my last visits. The dim lights, tablecloths, wine cellars and neatly dressed floor staff roaming the floor. It gave me a sense of walking in a brand new fancy restaurant. The best part of the first impression was that there was no kids to be seen running around, which was the biggest turn off for me in the past.

My point of this review is Churrascaria, therefore I am not gonna go in detail with the rest of the buffet, although I have to say that sushi has gotten much fresher since they make them to order during slow hours rather than having them sitting there(although they have a color marker on the sushi display plates that they have to change evey 15 minutes), and the seafood, salad, dimsum, noodles and desserts have always been great at this place.

So, after a quick tasting of all the good stuff in the buffet but reserving room to try the churrascos, I finally flipped the little disk to give them the green signal that I am ready for the meat. The first item to arrive to my table was the sausage. At the first bite, I had to stop and think weather I was dreaming or what. To my surprise it was the real Argentinean Sausage, the authentic flavor. I have been to many churrascarias, and what they call linguica(south american sausage) are mostly american italian sausage or something else. I could not believe it. The next thing I tried was the top sirloin(Picahna) the C shaped staek considered to be the flagship meat of all churrascarias. Again another surprise, Todai's picanha was better than F*ogo de Chao that I visited a week before. It was marinated and rich in flavor as it should be, instead of plain salt. The most surprising part of my Todai churrascaria experience is that whil at F*ogo, they rotate 12 to 13 items in their menu, Todai offered 18 to 20. And somehow, they managed to deliver all the items one at a time, instead of rotating the same item over and over again like f*ogo. In my last visit to f*ogo, I was offered Fraldihna, pork ribs and top sirloin over and over, and I had to ask them to bring me different choices.

Items that Todai offered that other churrascarias did not were, rabbits, quail, shishkebob, rib-eyes(spectacular), Fillet mignon(real medallion cut not a big chunk cut in slices like f*ogo), leg of lamb, etc. Honestly, I could not taste them all, because I was too full. However, I could not resist to try my country's original,Asado de Costilla( Beef ribs)which the chef was slow-roasting it high above the grill. So, I asked the food-runner that i wanted to try my last choice of the night. Again, another surprise, very juice, flavorfull and authentic argentinean flavor. All this was very puzzling. The man I saw at the grill was a little Asian chef, and definitely not an argentinean. Out of curiosity, I approached to the grill station, and asked him where he learned to make such wonderful chimichurri sauce(argentinean staek sauce). The chef said in Argentina. Bingo! I knew it! the guy had to be from my country to be able to do authentic south american bbq. When i talked to him in spanish, they chef spoke with a thick argentinean accent unique to the people from my country and Uruguay. I did get to chat a little while. And found out that Chef Mark came to the US about 25 years ago, and although he was trained as sushi chef, then later as french chef, his passion has always been Argentinean BBQ.

My experience at Todai was mind boggling. Now i have a place where i can have both my passions, sushi and churrasco(at it's best) and save over $20 for better choice, better meat and original flavor. If reputation, ambience and location were not the factors. F*ogo can not even compete to the quality, flavor and choice of the meats offered at Todai. I can assure that at blind test, any south american could tell how by far Todai meats are better than F*ogo. And this was my main question to chef Mark. How could he serve all the meats that F*ogo offer and about half dozen more, snow crab, sushi, live oyster and many more, at substantially lower price than f*ogo. He simplified as follow, " at other places you pay for the name, here at Todai you pay for the food served". That answered my question.

MY REVIEW: I recently went with a big party, they have never been and wanted them to experience this place I always talked about. It's great that the nigiri and handrolls were brought to you, but the wait staff seemed to be very confused, the handrolls that were available weren't listed on the sushi order list that they give you to order from. The seaweed paper was horrible, was very tough, not crispy, not sure why, maybe they should find a different way to notify the staff for the meat, they kept coming to us even if we had our RED sign facing up and vice versa, when it was green, they were no where to be found. Maybe if they let us order our own nigiri and handrolls, it would help cut the price come back down, I really didn't like that the price went up so much, or in fact maybe make the meat concept an option. Most of the meat they were offering I didn't even care for. Also they never keep enough oysters available, as soon as they put some out, eight at a time, they are all gone, then it's another 30 min before they put 8 more out, trust me I've monitored them.

MY REVIEW: I love the new concept. All the seafood and many cuts of meat brought to the tablesite, did not have to get up except for the salad. In fact, now Todai is serving restaurant quality sushi, because they don't display them on the buffet table anymore. All you have to do is ask the servers and they make them fresh and bring them to you. The only negative was that I did have to wait a few minutes before being sitted on saturday. But the manager told me that the new concept has turned very popular and they are incorporating new staff every day. Will visit again on a weekday. Awesome job Todai and thank you for creating a place where both my meat eaters and seafood eaters friends can coexist! The charcoal-grilled sea snail, fresh made Tuna Tataki and top sirloin were out of this world!

MY REVIEW: My husband and I go to this restaurant once every month or so. However, ever since Todai changed to their the new Brazilian meat buffet the other stuff has really gone down hill. The last time we went it did not have all the sushi roll choices that it had before. The last time I checked this is a seafood/ sushi restaurant not F*ogo de Chao. I am glad they are trying to add new things to the restaurant, but letting the sushi go down hill is not right.

Plus, Sunday night is usually not a busy day. We waited 45 min. to be seated and when we went in there were at least 15 open tables. We realized the hostess that seated us had to clear tables also. Obviously, they were short on staff. Hopefully, the next time we go in the sushi is better, but for now we are staying away (we are going to real sushi restaurants instead.)

MY REVIEW: I had a business trip to Houston recently and my concierge recommended Todai to fit my seafood needs. Their Seattle location was always a great place to satisfy my atrocious urge to fill up on a variety of foods. I WAS AMAZED with what this location had to offer. Sushi was ordered a la carte but kept coming at my request. I had a wait a couple of minutes, but the sushi was quite fresh. Snow crabs were a bit on the salty side but satisfying. I was hoping for some dungeness crab, but might have missed it since I only visited the line twice. The jumbo shrimp that the chef offered were one of the best dishes of the night, succulent with every bite. They even offered table side rotisserie meats which kept coming with a flip of a card. The staff was friendly and prompt on service. The manager explained that this was a new concept that was incorporate for the first time that night. Houston, you have a great thing going and Todai will definitely be my first stop for my dining needs. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

MY REVIEW: This used to be a MUCH BETTER restaurant.

Lately we have noticed the quality going down down down, while the price goes up up up (now over $26 on the weekends)!

They no longer serve lobster, the quality of the fish is poor (since when did tilapia become such a popular fish!?). They have changed the birthday deal. They have removed some of the decor, like the large fish sculpture, and the fish tank in the mens room has been empty and nasty looking for years now. Id say judging by the fact that we went on a Friday night at 7 and they were only about 1/2 full, this place has lost its charm.

If the price was about 30% lower, Id say this was an okay place to eat, but for the cost, you can do MUCH BETTER. Sushi is SO POPULAR in Houston now that you have MANY MANY more choices.

Im really sorry to have to report this too because Todai was the first place I took my fiance for dinner, about 6 years ago. I just learned (from the website) that they are ENDING THE FREEE BIRTHDAY MEAL on Dec 31, 2007. We will miss you, Todai.

MY REVIEW: I have been to this restaurant several times within the last year or so. They have their high and low points. But, put everything aside, I don't understand why some people complain because this restaurant does not want to give them free meal. If one finds no value, then don't have to go. This last guy makes it sound like he wants to shut someone elses business, because he is not happy that the restaurant owner don't wanna give free food. I think some church gives out free food some time, but i don't think they give you all you can eat sushi, alaska king crab, oyster, steaks, jumbo shrimps, etc. If they do, I'll go and pay for it, not whine because i can't get it free.

MY REVIEW: ATTN: They changed their complimentry birthday meal requirements without any advertised warnings. It used to be Buy-One-Get-One and they changed it to Buy-Two-Get-One. So the Weekend lunch cost $32 instead of $16 for so-so sushi. Changing their rules really IRKED me, so that will be the LAST time they see me there.

NOTE: Our waiter also said that 2007 will be the last year that they run any birthday promotions.

Lastly, that "mall" is only half occupied so it really looks dead. I-10 construction probably scared off a lot of business.

MY REVIEW: I've had good sushi and paid the price for it. Todai is a buffet and well we all know about buffets. But for an Asian restaurant it is better than average. Most of the hot foods were hot and great tasting, not lacking any flavor. The sushi was small but okay. The best part of the sushi is the variety. Tuna, salmon, egg, clam, squid, octopus, and other rolls. Salmon is my favorite and was pleased with it, but it did go fast from the buffet, i guess alot of other people like it also. Didn't get a chance to check out the Udon bar. The desserts were average for a Asain restaurant.

Our server was great, plenty of refills, showed me how to use chop sticks, and was in clean uniform.

The place was kinda dark for lunch and there was only 1 place to get a clean plate. Most of the glass looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. The cashier didn't talk to me the entire time he took my money, he was on the phone.

The Marq-e center is slow most of the time since it isn't in the greatest location. But Todai is a great place to take a person afraid to try sushi. Watch out for the clam sushi, it's tough

MY REVIEW: I'll try not to write as much as foxfroggy, but I have to say that I agree with everything I read in that review. The key point to me being this is not PREMIUM sushi, which means that I do not have to pay a PREMIUM price.I've been very please with the freshness of all the sushis I've seen there and most of the complaints I've had were for things that were just not to my taste. BUT at least I got a chance to taste it without paying full sushi price just to discover that it does not suit my palate. Other issues have been with quality of the cream puffs and occationally the service. Regarding the cream puffs I think it's a manufacturing issue, because I've had the same problem with them at several places now. As to the service all I can say is that when there are humans involved you can not expect it to be perfect everytime.

MY REVIEW: Well, I had long wanted to try this place out. So, I finally broke down and took a friend to eat there for dinner. We were both somewhat disappointed. First I will say that the selection here is astounding and a lot of it was "good". But that is where it stops. "Good" was as far as it got. Overall, the food just seemed average.

The sushi, was just so-so. I have had better sushi from Kroger Grocery store. The raw oysters I had, one tasted fine, the next one awful and there were no crackers to eat them with (yes I know this is a Japanese restaurant but you could have a few saltines on hand for us Americans). There were some decent vegetables, and plenty of Snow Crab and some other "OK" dishes but nothing stood out at this place that made me want to come back. Even the desserts were just so-so, except for one. The Creme Brulee was pretty good.

I am not trying to knock the place. It was clean, and there was plenty of food and the service was fine and I think the concept is a good one. The food could just be a lot better.

Even though it is all you can eat, for $23.99 (on the weekends) you could get a much better seafood dinner somewhere else at that price and your taste buds and belly would be more satisfied.

MY REVIEW: Iam very disappointed when I last visit to Todai restaurant. There was a Chinese waitress there, she seems very happy with the customers that she's acqquainted, but when we asked her if they carried Tabasco sauce, she said and pointed overthere at the counter, instead of taking it to us. Her attitude is very rude. I order an ice tea, it is too strong, so I told my husband that I would put some in his water and get some water from his glass to lighten my tea. There was no refill at all the whole dinner. When we call her to take care of my bill she doubld charge my tea, I asked her why, she said because she saw 2 teas on the table, I told her the reason. But she said no, She saw 2 teas, then she still have to charge 2 teas. I think that it is very crazy that she does that to me. I told her that I want to see the manager to reason it out. She claims that she is the manager, and I have to talk to her only. I was so mad, I said I want to talk to the Supervisor, she said that you have to wait because supervisor is busy. SHe make us wait at least 20 to 25 minutes more, even we finished our dinner. Finally the supervisor came, after listening to our story, he just smile , he said that he's sorry for what she did, and crossed it out.

We still were so upset we did not leave any tips at all. We have to pay 27 dollars phus tax per person, but it is not worth the price, the attitude. We never come back there again, also sushi are not that great either. We used to come there when they first open, the place was jam packed, and I remember we had to wait at least an hour before we can get in there, they used to have lobster, not any more. THe food is not that great either. Everything changed. Sayonara Todai. Shame of you. I think only Todai in CA are real Japannese, but not the one in HOuston. Now when we came, it was a Saturday evening, but there were very few customers, not only a half of the place were packed, I feel sorry for them. The way they treat customer like this, they will keep loosing business.

one thing i didn't like was how the sushi weren't chilled. some felt warmer than they were suppose to be...

MY REVIEW: This review is mostly generated by the plethora of inane reviews here."I don't like seafood, but" or "I couldn't be bothered to check the price first so I was robbed" are rather typical of the type "review" see here. Perhaps if you "hate" seafood you might think twice about walking into a restaurant with "Seafood" in the name in the first place. And the price of the buffet for lunch or supper, weekday or weekend/holiday is easily available at the restaurant or online.

Lobster is available, but you need to ask for it. Instead of whining about its absence, we simply asked the server, and lobster was produced. Unfortunately, just like when it was available on the hot bar, it was sadly overcooked and dry. The lobster I really miss is the claws once available at lunch with drawn butter. The "secret" lobster is still a good pick-little tidbits of lobster at the noodle soup bar that you can have prepared with your choice of noodles and/or veggies. Don't miss that!

I also smirked at the "my companion said the sushi looked bad" but with no specifics about what was wrong or any actual taste comments. Yes, you can get better sushi for some items in small, specialty sushi bars at a much higher price. Everyone who really loves sushi knows this and has favorites. But Todai has quite decent sushi, and some of it is excellent. The snapper sashimi has always been quite fresh, vividly colored and tasty. My only complaint is that the pieces are a bit large for my taste. The smoked eel sushi was as good as anyone's I've ever tried.

If you eat sushi, you become alert to dried-out looking fish, off-color and off-temperature or "fishy" smells and flavors. On this visit, Todai passed those tests without flaw. The tuna and yellowtail were a bit bland, but the other selections were just fine.

Salads are often a source of delight, and this time there was an offering of jicama salad with sliced fresh strawberries that was an utter delight. Crunchy cold asparagus spears with just a hint of hollandaise are another favorite, though some may think they are too crisp. Boiled shrinp and cold crab were greatly enjoyed by my companion, but I foceu on sashimi and sushi.

Hot Dungeness crab was a special offering this trip. Some drawn butter would have been nice, but red sauce or lemon suffices with crab so sweet. Oysters on the half shell were mediocre. Despite onther comments, the tempura was hot and crisp, and constantly refilled. "NY Tenderloin in Garlic Sauce" was a tasty addition to the hot meats and seafood. Even though it's largely imitation crab and butter, the dynamite seafood in a scallop shell is a guilty pleasure.

Desserts continue to surprise me, far exceeding buffet expectations. Hot made to order crepes are always available, but I tend to eat the tried and true. Real creme brulee is often available as it was this visit. The custard was quite good, but the crust needed more caramelization for my taste. Cheesecake bites are usually good, and were, but I mised the green tea variety they often have. Butter cookies are as good as grandma's- tiny crisp treasures with a distinct butter flavor. And the homemade candy bars-slabs of chocolate with pecans are also very good indeed.

Pricey? Well, yes, compared to fast food or a typical dine out on a budget, but for the variety and unlimited sushi, really a nice deal. Wine and beer can really add up, of course. Lunch is about $10 less, but the menu is somewhat reduced. For the skeptical newbie, lunch might be a good bet. And I have a birthday coming up soon-you can bet I'll claim my free dinner meal so two of us will dine for essentially half price.

As for all the complaints, I wonder if any of these folks bothered to address them to management or prefer just to whine later? I remember an occasion I went with my daughter and son-in-law and we all were happily anticipating lobster. A sign on the door informed us they had not been able to get any, and Prime Rib Roast would be offered as an alternative. While sad about the lobster, we were given some of the best standing rib roast I've ever tasted. And those who want lobster tails will find that if they bother to ask will be served.

A word to the wise: if you have a complaint about food, service or menu, address while you are there. By all means post the truth, but why not go straight to the source? After all, most restaurants want you to be happy and will compensate you or at least try to deal with the situation. And if you "hate seafood" don't expect to feast at a seafood buffet.

MY REVIEW: Service was great!!! But where's the lobster? The first time they opened I was very impressed, but as time went by the quality of prepared food went down. What I consider the main dishes ( lobster/shrimp/crabs ) were always out! I was always in line waiting for something to be replentished! Then I noticed a couple sitting next to me eating split lobster, but there was no lobster on any of the food islands? I found out if you request it from your server they will bring you some! I guess this is inside secret for big tippers. The good old days are gone.

MY REVIEW: I always like to go here just because I like buffets. I love their Udon noodles, the soup is so good and they have unlimited creme brulee, and it's really good! Their sushi is not one that I would recommend... but it's not bad tasting. i just like the different variety of food there... It's annoying though how they limit the lobster tails only to the birthday groups... They use to offer it in the buffet... How cheap can they be? We're paying $25 for buffet... and they're going to limit us? Anyway, if it weren't for that, I would give them a better rating and overlood the average sushi.
