MY REVIEW: Very much a mixed bag at Tan-Tan. I'm not big seafood lover so I should mention that right upfront. But I do love Vietnamese food, as well as Chinese. The first thing you notice when you come in is a really strong fish/seafood smell. Maybe that's a cultural thing, but it's not something I like - almost as though the place isn't clean enough. On the other hand, the restrooms were spotless.

Some of the food was good; some was really disappointing. There were about 8 of us and we ordered a variety of dishes. The beef with pan-fried noodles were very good; so was the chicken fried rice and the curry chicken. I ordered Hunan Chicken and either the waitress got the order wrong, or Sweet and Sour Chicken is the same thing to these folks. It was a mess: the chicken was obviously chicken fingers, tough and with no flavor; the sauce was cloying, and the chicken was surrounded by broccoli that was undercooked.

The service was OK. Some of the waitresses were pleasant enough, but one did that thing where the words are all the right ones, but the attitude and demeanor is straight out of the Nazi playbook.

I might go again for some of the better dishes, hoping the seafood smell isn't as bad.

MY REVIEW: I have been to Tan Tan many times. I brought my Asian friends, American friends and visitors there. I love their food and their price. My husband and I have high standard about Chinese/Vietnamese food. Tan Tan never failed to satisfy us in their quality of food, and services.

We love their noodle dishes. The hot pot choices are great. The service is always great, never have to wait too long. If you go there on weekends, make sure you go early. It would get a bit crowded.

MY REVIEW: Good noodles, but don't go there on a weekend at dinner time and expect to be served "quickly". The service is really really bad during dinner time on the weekends even though they have plenty of staff. For good service, go during lunch on weekdays where there aren't as many people and the staff are more attentive.

MY REVIEW: I LOOOOVED everything about Tan Tan. They have an extensive menu, the possibilities are endless. On top of their amazing selection of food, the prices are wonderfully cheap! But don't let that fool you, you will get generous serving portions and authentic, tasty chinese food. Im new to the area and tried a few other chinese places too, while they were all good and inexpensive, I will for sure be going back to Tan Tan. Im sold, you will be too!!!!

MY REVIEW: SERVICE: Considering it is an Asian restaurant, Tan Tan provides quick, organized, and fairly polite service. BEST service among all the other Asian restaurants on Bellaire Blvd.

FOOD VARIETY: Excellent

SEAFOOD: Fresh

PRICES: Higher now that they've expanded, but still VERY affordable. Dinner for $4-$10 a person?? Come on people....you're getting a lot for your money.

Good dishes to try: Won Ton Soup (with or without noodles), Special Fried Rice, Fried Dough w/ Egg (they made this dish popular here), and JUMBO shrimp with fried rice. Vietnamese Steak Chunks with red rice are also really good.

OVERALL: Excellent. Every now and then you might come across a waiter who isn't winning the award for brown-nosing, but give 'em a little credit guys. They staff nearly 20 waiters and a dozen or so bus boys (at least for dinner when I visit most often), so you're gonna come across an idiot every now and then.

FOOD is really good, prices good, great hours, best service for an Asian restaurant. What else are those complainers asking for??

*****BIGGEST dragon/lion dancer show in Houston every Chinese New Year. A MUST-SEE if you would like to experience this neat tradition that the Chinese and Vietnamese share.

P.S.....Other than the banquet halls, there is NO larger Asian restaurant in Houston. I don't believe they'd expand and stand so strongly for so many years if the food wasn't good.

MY REVIEW: One of my most favorite places to eat. There is so much variety here and it is always consistent. The service is good and your drinks are always refilled promptly. They're known for their Banh Bot Chien and that's a hit. I order that every single time I come here. Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed. It's much better than S*inh S*inh down the street

MY REVIEW: I went there once every couple months for the past two, three years. I love their noodles / noodle soups. Never really had bad experiences with service or food. I will likely continue to go there in the future.

MY REVIEW: Been eating at this place for what seems to be most of my life. I have seen them grow from a small place and expand to where they are now. The foods have always been consistently excellent, but recently I noticed the waitstaffs are less tense, more responsive and smiling more. It seems as if the whole place came under new management or something because now I truely enjoy my dining experience there. For those with bad exerience about Tan Tan I urged you to give this place another try and see what I am talking about. The rice cake and hot pot are to die for... oh and don't forget about the wonton noodle soup.

I have traveled to many cities around the US and Canada and have never encounter similiar dishes that tasted as good as Tan Tan's. Just writing this review makes me crave for some rice cake and hot wonton noodle soup.

MY REVIEW: This restaurant is the worst restaurant I have been to. The food is so-so and there is absolutely no customer service in this restaurant. The food is not worth the money I pay given that I can find other much nicer restaurants, in terms of food, service and $, around China Town. The waitress/waiter is unfriendly and the owner of the restaurant is very very rude. I went with my co-workers last week and wanted to pay our tab separately at the front counter, like what we always do. Very rudely, the owner denied and when we said this is something we did regularly in his restaurant, he told us he is the boss and he can do anything he want in the restaurant.

I will never go back there again. I don't expect the customer service to improve if the owner himself is a jerk to customer, well, unless the busines there slowed down significantly.

MY REVIEW: Used to go all the time and service varied (food always consistent), has been months since my last visit so I decided that it was time to check it out again...very impressed. I met a business associate that had never been there and service was very fast, and with a smile from most of the wait staff. The egg pancake was precisely how I remembered and the cha gio was excellent. So maybe I hit a good day, but all I can say is it was excellent...and surprisingly I saw groups of anglos (bunches of women) when before I was usually the only non-asian (hispanic) that didn't work there in the place, very cool, clean and quick. Prices have risen considerably in the past 10 years, but then again what hasn't...g'day y'all

MY REVIEW: My family and I ate here ever since it was opened. Over the years, the food was about the same. But in recent years, I believed they improved a lot (with the expansion, and better dressed hostess and waiters, oh yea also with those ear pieces in their ears). I think their food is consistent, and fresh for the most part. The best appetizer there is the Fried Egg pancake, its a house special. I usually order the Won Ton Noodle Soup, or the Three Meat Rice (it has chicken, pork, and this other meat). That always fill me up and its yummy!!!! Prices are fair for a fast food restaurant. I would definitely come here again!

MY REVIEW: I was introduced to Tan Tan's food about 3 years ago. I love all the choices, you could try different food every time you go! There are menu items for every kind of budget. My co-workers and I enjoy eating there regularly for lunch. You can also enjoy fancier dinners at Tan Tan. I've always had AWESOME service, even with large groups. And I have to mention the service on setting your table is fantastic! No other fast food restaurant has served me real silverware and plates! Tan Tan has always been more than fast food in my mind. With how busy the restaurant is, I've never thought service was poor. I noticed some reviews talked about not getting refills, but whenever I order water or tea my glass is never empty. If I ever need a refill, I just make eye contact with a server or wave at them. Again, I think all the food is really COOL! I can't resist their eggrolls; I think they are best I've ever had. Tan Tan is a Houston restaurant worth revisiting over and over.

MY REVIEW: I do NOT recommend this place at all. I used to go there all the time before the restaurant expanded. The service and food quality have deteriorated while the prices have gone up. The last time I went there with my family we order a hot pot. The waiters gave us two plates with two pieces of tofu. We had taken one piece off of each plate, and about 5 minutes later two waiters came, and with their BARE HANDS took one piece of tofu off one plate and put it on the other. They then handed the plate to the table next to us who had also ordered a hot pot. My family, along with the people at the next table, were in shock. They then proceeded to charge us for and extra plate of tofu. When we left, the waiter chased us to the parking lot to ask for a larger tip. Apparently 15% wasn’t enough for him. I will never go there again.

MY REVIEW: Never again...This place just plain sucks. Not why it took me multiple trips to give up on this place but maybe it was because so many of my Vietnamese friends hyped it up. The soup is tasteless (despite the overabundance of MSG) and the service is beyond ridiculous. Those on this site who have defended it with comparisons to B*K or M*ickey D's are way off base. At least I can get a W*hopper or a Mc*Rib with a thank you and come again and those places have self-refill stations for drinks. Good luck getting a refill at Tan-Tan. There are just too many good Vietnamese restaurants in Houston to waste your time on this place.

MY REVIEW: Like many people here, I grew up eating at Tan Tan since it was a fourth of its size now. But the quality of food and service and price value decreased DRAMATICALLY. I can tolerate the bad service since many "authentic" asian places don't stress over that much, but food got more expensive, portion size decreased, quality is terribly poor, before the service was just unattentive now they're just rude. The only good thing about this place is that its open late for late night chinese food cravings.

MY REVIEW: I was disappointed when I requested a chicken dish with "all white meat" and the waitress said I could not get it that way. Many chinese restaurants use a poor qaulity dark meat that is hard to chew. This restaurant lost my future business on their practices.

MY REVIEW: I've been there ever since I was small and have watched it expand. Their food is good regardless of what other reviewers say. I bet most aren't even Asian so they don't exactly know what they are tasting. It is a fast food restuarant anyways. You don't see M*cDonalds, W*endy's, T*aco Bell, or J*ack in the Box employees waiting on you so don't expect TanTan to do so. I mean if you want a refill, then just stop one of them and ask. It's just simple. People can't read your minds! TanTan is good. Go take a trip down there and enjoy their food!

MY REVIEW: Tan Tan is aite...no big deal. food is ok but the service sucks. They use to have good Mi but not anymore...if you want real good Mi, there's a place called MI C*ay Tung on bellaire that has the best Mi in Houston!!!! No Joke!!

MY REVIEW: I am a regular and also support TanTan since this place was small, now the owner getting rich and his restaurant is bigger and better, unfortunately, the service & food "SUCKS", over price and yet they often cheat on your bill so becareful. I don't like to go there anymore and now switch to C*hino restaurant on Bellaire and Cook. BTW, "MSG" is the famous dish on everything.

MY REVIEW: The only thing that is actually good there is the bot chien....everything else is over priced and the quality is pretty bad compared to the rest of the asian restaurants in the area and there are alot to choose from...the only upside is they're open late...my gf swears its good but that's because everything taste good after clubbing.

MY REVIEW: Used to be a favorite. I've always been willing to overlook the consisently poor service, not unlike most Vietnamese restaurants. However, this place has gotten ridculous. Unless your throwing down beers, they could care less about refilling your tea or water and even getting a 2nd coke is a challenge. The food quality/quantity has suffered over the years as well. At one time, this place had the best won-ton noodle soup in Houston but that is far from true now. Too salty, often days old, stingy portions. Stay away from this place if you are opposed to MSG as they use a ton of it in just about everything. I don't think I'll be back.

MY REVIEW: I will never go to this restaurant again. The customer service is appalling and the food really isn’t all that good either. Especially, not for the horrible service you have to endure. One time I went with my family. Everyone got their food except my mother. We were almost done with our food before a waiter finally bought out hers and when they did it was the wrong dish. When our waiter finally came back over, because no other waiters would help us, he argued that she had ordered this dish when she had actually ordered another number. As she handed back the plate for him to take it away, the waiter pushed it back down in front of her. I was absolutely outraged that they would treat their customer this way. If the order is wrong, just take it back. Not stand there and argue and shove food in the person’s face. I will NEVER go there again and I tell everyone about how my mother was treated there. I have been going there with friends for years now and their service is getting worst. They have no respect and appreciation for the customer that keep them in business.

MY REVIEW: Fast food restaurant? Have you look at the price? With the same amount of money spend here, I can enjoy better meal and much better service at so many other asian restaurants around this area. When I go here, I only eat one thing which is "Bot Chien" because many other restaurants don't serve this dish or didn't make it as good.

MY REVIEW: I think that a lot of people on this site who have reviewed Tan Tan do not realize that Tan Tan is a fast food restaurant. SO, keep that in mind when ordering. When you go to b*urger king, you expect a good burger, not a good steak. Tan Tan is the best in noodle soups, fried rice, eggrolls and other appetizers and entrees that are intended for low prep, QUICKLY served food! Of course, other items are on the menu, but you KNOW that at every restaurant there are certain things you must avoid. And as for customer service? When you go to M*cdonalds, everything is self serve. And if Tan Tan had a drive through service, I'm sure everything there would be self-serve too. If your water/drink needs a refill, just flag somebody down. No biggie, geeez.
