Profile Description: Amazón Grill is Américas and Churrascos gone casual, a creative Latin, stylish, upscale, self-serve grill. The well appointed setting is replete with lush potted plants, flowing fountains, artful light fixtures and warm wood paneling. For fair weathered dining, the pleasant patio is outfitted in comfortable rattan setting under the shade of stylish umbrellas.

MY REVIEW: The salad bar is gone from Kirby too. What a disapointment. On the way there I was telling everyone in the car, "We're going to get there right at noon. This place is going to be packed." When we got there, it could have been 3 in the afternoon. The restaurant was probably at 20% capacity. The food was still the same high quality, and I can't imagine it was all due to the lost salad bar, but I'm sure some people aren't happy with the change. I will be going less often. Too bad!

MY REVIEW: I have been going to Amazon in Woodlake Sq. a lot this year, and have turned new people on to visiting as the food is pretty good, but I always raved about the salad bar. I liked taking my family as the kids like the popcorn chicken (with popcorn under the chicken) and s'mores. But I went for lunch today and was shocked to learn THERE IS NO MORE SALAD BAR!!! Whose brilliant idea was this? Now they charge a buck for a small side salad. There were several patrons confused about this, and all comment cards were gone (not surprisingly). This will probably take Amazon out of my lunch rotation as I am not happy about this. I am doing this post as a warning to those regular patrons who haven't been there in a week or so.

MY REVIEW: Food was good but I don't understand the point of waiting in line to order and then standing in another line to get your drink. If you want to reorder a drink you must wait in line again. Not well organized. I guess West U parents let their kids run loose here. Kids runnin' everywhere unbehaved and VERY noisy both times I was there.

MY REVIEW: This is a great place for Happy Hour or after work wind down, you have to order at the counter first then look for your table, BUT other than those two down falls the food rocks... the ceviche is the best I've tried in Houston, they have an appetizer bar with corn tortilla chips and banana chips with the best cilantro sauce or mango sauce YUMMMM the best....I definately recommend this place

MY REVIEW: the tortilla soup was very spicy and i loved it, ( too spicy for my wife) the spinach/artichoke.... empanadas were exceptional along with all the available dipping sauces. the enchiladas were "over the top good". the only part of our meal lacking much flavor was the fajitas on my mixed grill plate (all the other grilled stuff was excellent). above average dining experience with an excellent waitstaff! this is the first time we've sampled latin/south american cuisine, won't be our last.

MY REVIEW: This was my first time eating South American cuisine and the experience was O.K. I can't remember the name of the dish I had, but it was a spicy tilapia dish with coconut sauce. It was tasty, however the portion size was small. I expected a different atmosphere, however it was O.K. One waits in line, selects their food, and then you select where you want to sit and eat. Overall, I expected better, but the total experience was just O.K. I would probably eat here again if I was looking for a very casual dining place to go to.

MY REVIEW: I just thing its simply one of the best restaurants I have been to. If you go you will without a doubt return. The food is something different for a change. My favorite is the Amazon(corn crusted chicken with cream sauce), I have recommended several people to Amazon Grill and they just have to keep going back. Their cilantro sauce is so good they even have it bottled up for sale. My son loves the tray with the smores over a little fire. The pico de gallo is out of this world, its one of my favorite things from there but I could go on and on, service is great as well. Just go check it out you wont be dissappointed.

MY REVIEW: This was our first visit. I had the chicken Peru, my wife had the shrimp and fish. We both enjoyed our meal. Both the quality and quantity was excellent. We each had a chicken/artichoke/spinach empanada that was out of this world. Service was very good as well. We will be back.

MY REVIEW: I've eaten at this restaurant at least six times, and I have only one complaint (at the end of the review). I just read a review about tough shrimp, and in my experiences as a cook, no matter what you do to shrimp, they don't get tough, but I guess he's an "amateur" food critic who knows best. I LOVE the way the chicken is cooked, it's so juicy you can eat it with just a fork, yet cooked through so there are no worries about undercooked food. The sauces on the food are wonderful, and the salad dressings are amazing. I like the quick service of walking up to the register, and on busy nights, they will seat you and you pay the waiter for added comfort. The only complaints I have are the alcoholic beverages. The margaritas are WAY too sweet and sour, and every other drink I've had are very so so. But, the food is so good, WHO CARES??

MY REVIEW: I'd like to amend my March 15, 2004 review below. In his book Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain advises against ordering fish on a Monday; what's served isn't likely to be the freshest. This was certainly the case last night at Amazon Grill, a dining experience I usually enjoy. Walking up to order at the register, I saw one of the evening's specials, a fettucine in tomato basil sauce with grilled shrimp. It looked wonderful. But the reality was quite different. The shrimp were the oldest, toughest I've ever had. And they were overcooked to the point of being inedible. The pasta wasn't much better... the low-grade dried LINGUINE was a couple minutes past al dente, and the canned sauce was salty and had to hint of basil whatsoever. At least the pita crisps that garnished the dish were tasty. But at $15.99, this was highway robbery - I could have done better at home.

It does appear that Amazon Grill has improved the quality of the salad offered, and the plantains were delicious as always. But I just feel taken by this particular meal, and so I won't be in a hurry to return. When I do, I'll definitely order something else. What's an Italian pasta doing on a Latin fusion menu anyway?

MY REVIEW: I love this place!!! The Apoyo dish is my favorite. Their tres leches cake is absolutely amazing. I ordered one for a birthday party and it was a hit. Everyone was ranting and raving about how good it was. I definetly recomend this to anyone looking for a great meal at an unbelievable price with a company that still believes in customer service.

P.S. Don't forget to check out the frogs in the aquariam at the entrance of the store.

MY REVIEW: Visited this location for a business lunch yesterday. Some folks still seem confused about not waiting to be seated and that you just go up to the counter and order. The staff were friendly and the person taking my order made a terrific reccomendation. I had the grilled chicken sandwich with avocado and bacon. WOW! That was the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. The cilantro dressing on the salad was very good as well.

MY REVIEW: We went to the Amazon Grill for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We didn't know anything about it before going. Afterwards we thought it was really good and different. The food had a good flavor and it arrived hot. The service was fine. We decided to go back. We did go back. This time about 15 minutes before closing. Before our entrees arrived, while we were still eating our salads, everything but the lettuce and the chips were removed from the salad bar. Everyone was busy flipping chairs over. When my husband asked at the counter for more dressings they had to get get them from the back. When he wanted to get "to-go" containers they had to ask two different people. I realize that employees want to get home after a shift. However, if you want to be out of your restaurant by 9pm, close your doors to the public at 8:30. Don't rush people. I am awaiting a call back from the manager. We will go back, but much earlier in the evening.

MY REVIEW: What O*live Garden is to Italian, this is to South American.

The empanadas were good, and the tilapia in coconut sauce was decent (albeit with more of a Caribbean flavor than South American). On the downside, the salad had more than its share of brownish lettuce; the $1 salad at the Hobby W*endy's is better. Plantain chips were neither here nor there, the loss leader without the loss.

The big problem: the Caipirinha was a grevious insult to the alcohol gods. How can anyone screw up a drink with only 3 ingredients? I've had Caipirinhas in Caracas, Paris, Tokyo, and several US cities. On four different continents, they've always tasted the same (or maybe a tiny bit different depending on the limes). I've even seen the familiar "51" bottle and explained to bartenders how to make one, and again, even on the bartenders' virgin attempts, they're about the same. But... I go to a "South American" restaurant and rather than getting the refreshing celebrated national drink of Brazil, I get an abomination that tastes like like a mixture of battery acid and karo syrup.

Go to Amazon if you want, but be forewarned: don't order a Caipirinha.

MY REVIEW: I love the menu changes, they actually lowered their prices on some items. My favorite item went down by $3 and the salads have dropped as well. The service was ok in the beginning but now it seems to get better everytime I go in to eat. The frogs are a nice touch the the decor.

MY REVIEW: They have changed the menu. :( Several of the dishes I liked are gone. They no longer give you a couple of cooked plantains with the dinners and prices seem to have increased. Just not worth the $30+ for two dinners/one dessert/two teas.

MY REVIEW: I used to love this place, and have been eating there since they first opened on Post Oak. The Kirby location then became my weekend lunch favorite until the prices kept going up and up until they have priced themselves out of my generous lunch budget. Also, have gotten a cold entree one too many times or else it's out as soon as I sit down with my salad and I either have to eat it with the salad, or let it sit and again, get cold. The salad tends to have that "cellophane bag aftertaste" that a good rinsing would probably cure. Also, the salsa has changed since they first opened and is not as good as in the beginning. I also tried the newer Westheimer location and the service absolutely sucked.

5114 Kirby Dr, Houston, Texas 77098  713.522.5888

MY REVIEW: My boyfriend and I visited the Kirby location this weekend, and it was FABULOUS. We are C*hurrascos patrons as well, and this place is a bargain for the QUALITY and quantity of food you get. $10 for a grilled chicken w/mango salsa, rice, corn/tomato salsa and 2 flambeed bananas. $11 for a plantain-crusted chicken with black bean sauce, and the same sides. On top of that, they had all the special sauces from C*hurrascos to go with the (unlimited) salad and plantain chip bar. We didn't have a go at the desserts, but the Tres Leches for $4, funnel cakes and S'mores (flame to roast the marshmallows included) looked fantastic. For a limited time even, you can donate a book and get a free Tres Leches!

The atmosphere here was perfect. Everyone can feel comfortable in a place like this - girlfriends out for a nice dinner, a family gathering with children, a fairly nice first date, or a casual 800th date. You could go dressed down or dressed up and not feel out of place. Plus it has 3 different areas to eat: inside, out on the patio, or in a sun room. I'd recommend the patio at dusk to anyone on a date, weather permitting. As for parking - With T*ortuga's now closed, parking is a breeze.

So to anyone who likes C*hili's and B*ennigan's type places, but want to try something different, I HIGHLY recommend this place. For the quality and quantity, Amazon Grill is VERY well worth your money. I'm not sure why so many people expect to get the *exact* same food/quality of C*hurrascos for half the price though. The saying "You get what you pay for" is true no matter where you go. But rest assured, you will likely get MORE than what you pay for.

MY REVIEW: Mediocre C*hurrascos, serving restaurant supply microwaved "food" on barely warm plates, at premium prices. This establishment ranks with O*live Garden and L*uby's at achieving barely edible food. This is Cordua Lite, and not worthy of standards established for their other restaurants. What a disappointment! Never again.

MY REVIEW: I feel that this place is a fast food copy of C*hurrascos. To my way of thinking the food does not go down as well in this casual atmosphere. My favorite dish at C*hurrascos is Pollo Encamisada. The Amazon's version of this is not quite up to par. I have also tried the new shrimp cones which are very good but you get six of 'em in a rack -- quite a challenge to get down. Wish they would serve half the quantity at half the price -- half an order. The salad bar doesn't taste as good and the chips just seem to taste the same in a casual atmosphere.

MY REVIEW: If this didn’t happen to me I would not believe it. A friend and I went to Amazon on Kirby to enjoy a nice meal, but we ended up leaving very disappointed. There were no real problems with his order, but mine was wrong. They brought me the wrong plate. I ordered the AMACONES and they brought me the AMAZON. I know they sound similar, but that is not my fault. I explained to the guy that was not what I had ordered, but since that was what was on my receipt, he did not care and walked off. I had to go up to the counter and explain that they got the order wrong. I waited 14 minutes before they brought out the AMACONES to which they added shrimp, which I am allergic to. But here is the UNBELIEVABLE part. The manager also brought me a bill for $1.08, yes one dollar and eight cents. She said that was the difference between what I had ordered and what I paid for. The dish I ordered was $8, and they had already over charged me for the AMAZON. I gave her a credit card, just so I would have a record of this. So she brought the receipt for me to sign and said, “thank you, sorry about that.” Not only did they make a mistake with the first order, then again with shrimp on the second order, not only did my guest eat most of his meal before me, but they had the nerve to charge me four dollars extra. We spent almost $40 on our meal including the drinks. This was the worst dinning experience I have ever had and I doubt I will ever return to that location. Update: The GM of that restaurant, Jesus, called me today to apologize for our bad experience. He said he spoke with the staff and assured me that it was only because the employees taking care of the situation were still pretty new. He said he is sending me a gift certificate with hopes that I will return and give them another chance. That is a nice gesture, but I think I’ll see if I can use it at one of their other restaurants.
