MY REVIEW: Food is OK. Chicken Fried Steak definately has too much breading and not enough meat as others posted. The gravy is OK. The rolls are pretty damned good. Overall, it's a good place for a quick bite, but I'd go to M*el's first.

MY REVIEW: We have lived away for four years. We had tried Goodson's on a few occassions over the years when we lived here before, and had it on our "just okay" list so we stopped eating there. Some freinds wanted to meet there for dinner recently so we agreed. Service was fine. Food was marginal at best. Chicken fried steak was more like chicken fried breading. Hamburgers marginal; onion rings greasy. Do yourself a favor and go to M*el*s. Off the bbeaten path, but it is the best greasy spoon in Houston. It puts Goodson's to shame by comparison, and is certainly worth the extra five to ten minute drive.

MY REVIEW: I have tried to give Goodson's the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the CFS but every single time we have ordered this it's a disappointment. Way too much breading and not enough meat. Kid you not the last 3 times there was more breading than meat. I have lived in Tomball for 7 yrs and talking to the locals everyone has told me "just not the same since the 1990's" and they agree about the CFS having too much breading.

MY REVIEW: We went to Goodson's for the first time. I have to say, for a diner-type place, it wasn't half bad! Goodson's is like the prototype for C*racker Barrel. The ambience is very casual and knick-knacky. The service was wonderful -- our waitress was great and attentive. We never had to wait for refills. The food was steaming hot. It was a nice dinner.

The food itself was not ... bad, I mean. What do you expect from a place that boasts the best chicken fried steak in Texas? If you're expecting greasy diner fare, you are not going to be disappointed. I had the chicken fried steak, small (I would be scared of what the large would be -- the "small" literally took up an entire plate). It wasn't bad. It's chicken fried steak, for crying out loud. We liked the rolls. My husband and daughter had decent burgers.

Overall, not bad, not bad.

MY REVIEW: I feel compelled to order the large (enormous) CFS on every visit to Goodson's. Their other menu items look great - but I just can't pass up the CFS to try something else! Good prices and good service.

MY REVIEW: Goodson's Cafe is your standard American fare but prepaered in a way that kicks Black E*yed Pea's A**!!! I have taken my family visitors from West Virginia, Washington State, and Dallas to it and they have agreed that it's "The best chicken fried steak in Texas." It's a very casual easy going atmosphere - no one has even given me a dirty look the few times my VERY boisterous 4 year old has become a little edgy and impatient.

My only "complaint" would be the several times that food has been brought for my child over the years that has come without a spoon. {And I can understand people without small childern don't realise they don't become fork proficient for awhile.} But when I have asked my server for one they have forgotton or taken what I feel had been an inordinant amount of time to just drop a spoon off at my table.

The food is astounding - once you've gone you'll keep going back!

MY REVIEW: I am a Californian, visiting this area for the first time. Goodsons was amazing, the food, the service, the entire experience!! I started out with the fried sampler appetizer plate, the onion rings, fried mushrooms, cheese sticks and okra were enough to constitute a meal. For supper, I went with the chicken fried steak(small portion) yea that is a fib, green beans and of course mashed potatoes and gravy. The home made rolls were like grandma used to make. I even treated my self to a great margarita!!! This resturaunt is worth a 1700 mile trip on it's own!! I got the bill and wow!! it was easy on the wallet as well. I can't wait to come back!! What a great experience!! if you are ever in this area and you do not stop and give this place a try, it would be a darn shame.

MY REVIEW: You can't blame an entire restaraunt for one servers bad day. Of course when Goodsons grew and moved it wasn't the same ol' mammas kitchen quality and atmosphere, the old place was like sitting in grandmas house converted to a restaraunt. Nothing is really like it used to be anymore, times have changed. I can testify that service and quality have been good and consistent over the years. On my last visit we were coming back into town after a long drive and after placing my order I barely had time to use the restroom and wash my hands before my chicken fried steak was at the table. It may be a hungry traveler speaking but that was the coldest beer and yummiest chicken fried steak I'd had in ages!! : )

MY REVIEW: When you want good Texas home cookin' this is the place. I use to eat there often (7 years ago) before moving to a different side of Houston. Recently, I moved back to Tomball and couldn't wait to eat there again. My fiancee had never been and liked his chicken fried steak. I have to say I always get the same thing: chicken fried chicken, fried okra, and mashed potatoes.....and of course the best thing there: those yummy huge, home-made rolls with the delicious creamy gravy! I just can't think of anywhere else I would rather go for that type of country comfort food! Prices are incredibly reasonable! wow, after all this thinking- I am craving Goodson's now !

MY REVIEW: Goodson's has the best baked squash, chicken fried steak and those rolls are to do for. I am from Texas and I know what good chicken fried steak is. I live in Las Vegas and I can't wait to go back and visit Goodson's again.

MY REVIEW: Started Eating at Goodson's before they moved to the "fancy" side of Tomball. When we have someone in from Minnesota, Boston or such, we take them to Goodson's for a real taste of Texas.

Over the years, there have been the good and the not as good, but on the whole, it is a great (and authentic) Texas tradition.

MY REVIEW: I had a bad experience at the Goodson's cafe on Father's day. The waitress is not friendly at all, my order came out wrong and she won't even said sorry and acted like it is my fault. She did not check on us the whole time see if everything is allright. We notice the portion is smaller than usual. Yes, they are very busy on that day. We will not go to Goodson's on any special holiday because they sure are not equipped to handle the large crowds.

MY REVIEW: We were visiting a relative at Heritage. We are from New Hampshire and had never been to TX....We took our relative to lunch at the cafe. We all had chicken fried steak...for the first time ever. All we can say is that it was the best food we have ever had away from home....It was huge...and the rolls that went with it were just great. We all enjoyed our dinner and the wait service was excellent and the price was GREAT! Now I have tried making it since we are at home...It was very good...not as good as Goodsens...

MY REVIEW: The food are hot and fresh. The portions are huge for the money. We always have a lot of leftover for later. We love their yeast rolls and always buy a dozen to take home. The service are excellent.

MY REVIEW: Goodson's Cafe is so good . it is true that goodson does have the Best and I mean the best Chinken Fried steak In Texas. The service is also exelant. The waitors there make you feel at home. To grade them form 1- 10 i would give them a 100.

MY REVIEW: For all you folks that think some things are not as good as they use to be. You're right! I'm now 71 and nothing is as good as it use to be.... However, back in '71 Goodson" Cafe was where me and the wife did a little courting and the chicken fry was the best there was between Tokyo and Casablanca, including Texas. Ah yes, everything changes but me and my wife. Bon Appetite D & J

MY REVIEW: I dont know how the food used to be but it tastes good to me. I went in to try the chicken fried steak the other day for the first time and it was the best I have ever had. And if your worried about cholestterol try the lemon peper catfish. The service was also good, even though our waiter looked like he had a full section he still had time to be friendly and get us everthing we needed. I would rate the food and service a 5 out of 5.

MY REVIEW: We've been going to Goodson's since it was a shack on the other side of Tomball. The food is consistently good, maybe not the best chicken fried steak in the world, probably not as good as it used to be, but the price certainly is right. The service is sometimes lackadaisical, but let's face it, this is not a place to go for a dining experience. You go to Goodson's when you want homey comfort food and don't feel like making it yourself.

MY REVIEW: This usually is a great place to eat but.. yesterday I went with the family and our waiter started out nice but after we got our food that was about the last we saw of him. never more tea , never any water, never see if we needed anything almost till we asked for the bill. a large group came in and they had his total attention as if we were invisible, we still left a decent tip but I will think twice before I go back

MY REVIEW: I've been eating at this place fairly often since they opened their new location on Tomball Parkway years ago. If you want good "down-home country cookin'", this is the place to go...but I was born and raised on the East Coast, so what do I know about "down-home country cookin'"? Most of my friends are from this area, and they say it's the best. I ordered the chicken-fried steak only twice in the last 10 yrs. just to see what it tasted like and didn't care for it until I put their cream gravy on it, then it had some real flavor other than grease. (I hardly EVER order fried foods because of fat/cholesterol content.) If you're looking for a place where you can have a low-fat, low-cholesterol meal, the only things on the menu are the Chicken Tropicana (a boneless, skinless grilled chicken breast with a slice of canned pineapple on top), or the grilled catfish. Otherwise, if you don't count calories or fat and want to taste cooking "like your (Southern) mama" used to do, this is the place. The home-made cobbler with vanilla BlueBell ice cream is exceptional (so I might cheat a little!) The service has always been slow, but that's because most of the patrons are local regulars who like to go to catch up on the latest gossip when they spot their friends. Family-friendly, but not a place to impress your date unless you're a "Country" couple.

MY REVIEW: Not as good as it used to be. We took out-of-state relatives to Goodson's for dinner. We all had the chicken fried steak. The steak was tough, the fries were frozen (I thought they used to be homemade). Service was good. There was no waiting at 7:00 pm. Now I know why. I'll give them one more try, but may drop them from my list of where to take out of town guests.

MY REVIEW: I have lived in the Houston area for a little more than a year now, and Goodson's was one of the first place I visited. After all, who could pass up the thought of the "Best Country Fried Steak in Texas". I must admit, I haven't tried all the other country fried steak IN Texas, but I can't think they are far off with their claim. I grew up in the Midwest with farming Grandparents, and the food at Goodson's truly reminds me of what Grandma used to make.

The meats are battered with old-fashioned flour, nothing fancy. The biscuits are the baking powder variety, HUGE and hot. The mashed potatoes are skin-on and lumpy, just as they are supposed to be. Plus, the gravy actually tastes as if they MADE it from the drippings, not poured it out of a jar.

I haven't had everything on the menu, but haven't had anything bad. The chicken fingers are delicious and more than enough for one person. The pork chops, while a bit thin for me, are flavorful and just like Gandma's as well. If you like your restaurants and their menu to be refined, Yuppie fare, then don't bother. However, if you have a hankerin' for the down-home flavor, atmosphere and attitude of Grandma's kitchen, Goodson's won't dissapoint you.

MY REVIEW: Not the same old place where the chicken fried steak used to edge over the side of the plate with the ol-fashioned cream gravy... not worth the wait - I kept going back in hopes that it would get better to no avail.
