Mo Mong Restaurant
1201 Westheimer Rd, Houston, Texas 77006
MY REVIEW: I like Mo Mong just fine. The dish I had was good-Volcano Tofu. However, the place was pretty empty (lunch on a Wednesday-everybody was probably waiting for Happy Hour to come in )and waitstaff appeared bored-often sitting around with customers. My only real criticism was that I ordered a vegetarian dish but was served soup with chicken and the spring roll that I received with my lunch also had chicken. I would hope that the server would have asked me if I wanted vegetarian versions prior to serving the food. I did not complain because it was already served, my food portion was huge to begin with, and my companion ate the food I couldn't. This has me thinking though that if the waitstaff does not think to ask and the chef doesn't think to tell the waitstaff to ask, is the food really vegetarian or do they use chicken stock? I will definitely have to ask.

MY REVIEW: Hadn't been to Mo Mong in a few years and regretted that I didn't stay away and just keep fond memories of what was a great Vietnamese restaurant. The atmosphere is still fine (elegant warehouse/loft), and the wait staff was friendly and attentive, but the food is not at all the same.
The spring rolls were made with very little cilantro and the rice paper wrappers were very sticky and rather dried out. The crab and asparagus soup was full of crab shell bits and the rough, thready ends of the asparagus. While the Bo Luc Lac (beef served on a bed of lettuce, tomato and cucumber) my companion ordered was well prepared, the tomatoes served with the dish were under ripe. My lemongrass beef was well seasoned, but the lemongrass used was hard, dry and inedible, which ruined the whole dish. Once you bite into a hard semi-circle that resembles a toenail, the meal is just not the same. this happened repeatedly until I just gave up. Every bite contained a slice of hard, dried lemongrass. If Mo Mong can't order better, fresher produce, they need to remove dishes from the menu that require fresh ingredients to be good. I doubt I'll be back.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I drive from Brenham to eat at Mo Mong's. It is absoultley the best vietnamese food we have ever eaten, and we have tried many. I agree that on occasion the service is a bit to be desired. Lisa, the owner is the best. Maybe we should mention to her when we have a less than desirable waiter. Everytime we have been there she makes sure we are satisfied from start to finish. Can you imagine how many places we could stop and have lunch or dinner on our way in to Houston from Brenham??? We do not stop and have lunch or dinner at before we arrive at Mo Mong. It is the best:) The wait staff does look at us as being glutens, the portions are so generous and we always get something to take home......it is that good....keep up the good work Lisa, you are the best. See you next time. Janice

MY REVIEW: It's been a little while since my last visit which was always great. Today for lunch was no exception. The leek potato soup was smooth and of course the Bo Luc Lac was out of this world!.
The waiter was busy but did a great job making sure everyone was taken care of.
You can't go wrong getting anything that has the Luc Lac sauce.

MY REVIEW: Strong Points: Atmosphere and $2.50 Cosmo on wednesday nights.
Weak Points: food lack of authenticity. I'd rather call it plain.
If people are looking for a place to drink one or two cocktails, it's a good place. If they look for good, authentic vietnamese food instead, other places are so much better.

MY REVIEW: While the food is really good, the service does leave something to be desired. The coconut shrimp spring rolls with the mango sauce (we swap from the wasabi sauce) are awesome. I could just eat 10 and skip the rest, but the orange beef is pretty good. My wife likes the chicken & eggplant.
It does seem that every time we go, there are new waiters. I don't know if its just that they have very high turnover when it comes to waitstaff, or if the waiters just don't care, but if you do go, expect poor service and good food (and drinks) at a slightly high price.
Portions are large enough that if you get an appetizer (and you should, cause they are great) you'll probably bring some home.

MY REVIEW: I STARTED GOING TO MO MONGS ON WEDNESDAY, IT IS A LITTLE CROWDED BUT NOT TO BAD. THE SERVICE WAS GOOD, THE GIRL THAT TOOK OUR DRINK/FOOD ORDER WAS VERY ATTENTIVE AND HELPFUL. MY FAVORITE THING ON THE MENU HAS TO BE THE MANGO SPRING ROLLS!!! THATS A MEAL OF ITS OWN. :) THE HOST/OWNER? CAN BE MORE NICER. I CALLED THE NEXT DAY TO SAY THAT MY FRIEND LEFT HIS JACKET AND SHE GAVE ME ATTITUDE. I DO PLAN TO GO BACK FOR THE $2.00 COSMOS AND THE MANGO SPRING ROLLS.

MY REVIEW: I must say that I have never had a bad experience with the service or the food at Mo Mongs. Both have always been exceptional. One of #1 choices is the Ga Luc Lac. Absolutely fantastic. I enjoy the atmosphere at Mo Mongs. I have recently relocated to another state and I am going to really miss this restaurant.

MY REVIEW: I have read a lot of negatives review about Mo Mong, however I have had nothing but great food and experiences there. I always recommened this place to all my friends. The manager and servers are always willing to help and make your experience wonderful.

MY REVIEW: We visited here on the advice of a friend. First time, our waiter was apparently unaware of the size of the servings. We like to try several dishes and serve up our own "sampler plate" We ended up with enough food to feed an army even though the waiter had assured us that it was an appropriate order for 2 people. Today we tried again, brought our daughter, but decided to order from the lunch menu. We each ordered a lunch that was supposed to include a spring roll and soup. While taking our order, the waiter said that we were not operating on the lunch menu but could provide a large serving of soup. We agreed. He then came back to tell us that we would not get spring rolls with our lunch but we could order them on the side. However, he soon returned to tell us that spring rolls could not be served even as a side order on a weekend and explained that he was new to working weekends. The food was mediocre--servings much too large for a lunch. In the end, we were charged according to the dinner menu so we walked out paying $50 plus for what should have been a small lunch. The wonton soup was quite good but did not make up for the disappointment of our lunch. Both times we felt that wait staff was not knowledgeable about the menu--we will not go back.

MY REVIEW: I have to agree in part with the previous opinions, service it's gotten really bad, it seems that their long time wonderful staff such Carl and Arthur who used be there every Wednesday aren't there anymore. The food reminds great but service at the bar and not to mention upstairs is poor the host-manager lady is unwiling to accomodate her long time customers, she acts rude and if I'm paying customer I expect warm and friendly staff, sometimes great food isn't enough to keep you coming back. :(

MY REVIEW: Totally agree with last review. I've been coming occasionally for years - used to love it. This visit was totally disappointing. There were only 3 tables with customers, yet it took 15 minutes to get a wine and cocktail. Duck spring rolls were delicious as always. Two of our 3 dishes were terrible. Lemongrass beef was swimming in a greasy gravy-textured sauce with zuchini that was oil logged. Mo Mong noodles were cooked to the point being easily mashed to a paste - and were totally flavorless, mixed in with microscopic bits of shrimp and chicken. On the up site, tofu luc lac was superb. All portions had shrunken since the last time I went.
Our waiter was in training. That's fine. The trainer should ensure that the trainee gets drinks in an empty restaurant to a table in under 15 min. When served, we asked for plates so that we could serve family style and try everything. They brought us 3 tiny appetizer plates. Come on! We had to ask for everything. "Can you please bring us some serving utensils for the dishes?"
Wish I'd checked the other reviews recently. Won't be back.

MY REVIEW: I agree with several other posters. This WAS one of my favorite restaurants in the city. We have eaten there every couple of months for about 5 years. Our most recent visit was disappointing because of new lighting in the restaurant. The walls have been painted a dark color, very dim spot lights have been added at the ceiling, creating a very harsh atmosphere. There's no lighting on the tables to soften the effect. I felt like we were eating in a poorly lighted garage. Even though I like the food, probably won't be back. There are too many other restaurants in the city where dining out is a pleasant experience.

MY REVIEW: Recently a place that was one of my favorite places to eat has taken a turn for the worst. The food here is still some of the best I've ever had, but the service is some of the worst. I don't know who's doing the hiring there nowadays but the service I've had there recently has been absolutely AWFUL! I've tried with several different servers and they all have been an absolute horror to deal with.
The best waiter there was a black guy who I guess no longer works there. I wish that the management there now would hire more servers who had his charm and personality. The servers now are just plain rude and uninformed about there food. As I said the food is excellent, but the service sucks now. Until they do something about their awful service, I will only order to go from this place. So sorry.

MY REVIEW: I've read alot of these negative reviews and I wonder if we're talking about the same place?! Mo Mong's is by far, one of my favorite resturants. I just absolutly LOVE it!! If you're a first timer i suggest you start with general chicken mango rolls and noodles. You'll work your way up to the more "exciting" dishes. P.S. Mango rolls are DELICIOUS!! Best ever! 2 Thumbs up Mo Mong's!
