MY REVIEW: I went to Reggae Hut today to have a casual business lunch over some good food, and I'm happy to say that it was a great experience. The food was very tasty and the portions were generous. The jerk chicken was moist and flavorful, and the vegetables were a highlight. I never knew that I could love cabbage, but I'm positive of it now! The reggae was good and at a totally reasonable volume, and the environment was clean and comfortable and inviting. I'll definitely go back and I highly recommend it to others. It's a great lunch location for Medical Center and Rice folks looking to go someplace new, park easily, and get good food fast.

MY REVIEW: Fabulous! We tried the oxtails and the Curried Goat and both were just awesome. Too bad they aren't open on Saturdays. I'm going to have to play hookey to come back again. Close proximity to the museum district a plus. A must try!

MY REVIEW: I love the Reggae Hut, I was good when the first owner had it, and still rolling strong with a new owner. We just hope the staff service changed to be most customer service friendly. And where is the red stripes, please bring it back.
Peace, Love & Joy

MY REVIEW: After reading the previous reviews, I felt like I need to add my take on the NEW Reggae Hut. Now, mind you, this was my first time back in about 2 - 3 years, as they were closed, then they were only opened for dinner and so forth. Today i was in the mood for Jamaican so I decided to take my chances and give them a call first before going. This delightful person on the other end of the phone confirmed that they were indeed open, so my co-worker and i jetted over to the Hut.
Folks, the food (Brown Stew Chicken)was good...no, scratch that...it was excellent. And dem serve nuff food,(the portions were muy grande). Now, i have ALWAYS known the Hut to have S L O W service. Not today! Within 5 minutes we both had a plate of steaming food beckoning for us to dive in. But then again, the restaurant wasn't full so i will reserve judgement 'till i show up with my crew of more than two.
My co-worker vows that he will definately be back. He will not leave me...i tell you dat! I will try the Jerk next time...hmm, maybe the oxtail...no no, the curry chicken...hell, i might just go back everyday the rest of this week. So much for my diet.
Yall enjoy!
Respek!

MY REVIEW: Thank goodness this place is back in business! The food is as good as it was under the previous managment, and is it my imagination or have portion sizes increased? Jerk chicken and curry goat are loaded with the smoky, spicy flavors they should be, and the plentiful vegetables served with them are perfectly cooked: still crisp & not too salty. (Note: they will substitute extra veggies for the rice & beans on request, and there doesn't seem to be a charge for this service.)
My dining companions raved about the fluffy white coco bread, but I much prefer the sweet taste & chewy texture of THE BEST fried plantains in town--- my starch & dessert of choice. The only downside we could see was that Reggae Hut is currently open only Mon-Fri, but the waitress said they'd be open on weekends by early 2007. Hooray!!!

MY REVIEW: The weekly cooking schedule at my house is as follow. Big Sunday dinner, left overs on Monday, and cook Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Pizza or Chinese for the kids on Friday, and eat out on Saturday nights.
Well thanks to Reggea Hut, this schedule has changed. A couple of months ago, I had a grueling work day on Thursday and could not even look at stove when I got home. I had been to Breakfast Klub previously, and saw the advertisements for Reggea Hut, so I decided to pack up kids and hubby and head for the Hut.
Now I am viewing this from a caribbean family's point of view. Althought we are not from Jamaica, we are caribbean enough to know what is good food and what is not.
We started out with patties. The kids had beef, hubby chicken, and I had the veggie pattie. They were were wonderful. Served piping hot, with a light flaky dough and not too greasy. They were perfection.
On to the big food. My husband is a jerk chicken connoisseur, so we anxiously awaited for his food to arrive, as he is the hardest to please with restaurant food. At the first bite when I saw his eyes roll back in his head, I said, "We gotta a winner!!"
I had the oxtails. The were so tender, they just fell off the bone, and they were NOT GREASY, how oxtails have a tendency to be sometimes. The seasoning was wonderful, full of garlic and thyme. Heavenly.
The children had curry goat, brown stew fish, and brown stew chicken. All of them were pleased. They said the stew chicken rivaled my home cooked chicken (IMAGINE!). On a side note about the brown stew fish. My daughter kept saying, "mom, there is something in the fish". Upon further inspection, we found herbs, garlic, and spices stuffed down in the fish.. JUST LIKE WE DO IT AT HOME IN THE CARIBBEAN!!! We also had the plumpest, juiciest, sweetest fried plantains, served piping hot on the side.
What made the perfect accent to some very good food and quick pleasant service, was that they feature a steel drum player on Thursday nites. This guy was GOOD! He played top 40 american, standard reggea and calpyso, jazz, and some latin songs. To the delight of my teenage children he gave them of set of modern day songs, playing Shakira and Wycleff's "Hips Don't Lie", and Sean Paul's "Temperature", to which my 13 year old got up and did a jig in the middle of the restaurant, to the hoots, cheers and encouragement of the staff. It was a blast.
My children are having a back to school party and wanted the steel drum player, so we called Reggea to find him. His name is Ron and he comes highly recommended.
So every other Thurday it is steeldrums and Reggea Hut nite for my family. I highly enocurage anyone to try this place.

MY REVIEW: Strong Points - food was delicious and seemed very authentic. New ownership has made the difference. Service is a lot faster and the staff seems genuinely nice.
Week Point - The hours of operation are only from 5 to 10 , Monday through Friday. However, the owner says that will soon change.

MY REVIEW: strong points: the food taste even better than before and the ambiance is bright and colorful not like before,
weak points: no alcohol, but it's understandable due to the focus being mainly family oriented.
Specialties: the meat pies are the BOMB
Entrees: Jerk Chicken and Oxtails

MY REVIEW: The restaurant changed owners last year. The menu remains essentially the same but the food has declined. I visited the restaurant regularly for 10 years under the old management and chefs. The food was authenic, spicy (the jerk chicken was grilled and the jerk had fresh herbs), and the service slow.
Strong points New owner has added cloth tablecloths and napkins. Restaurant was recently painted and looks good. (It's still a joint but in a nice way.) Service is tons better than it used to be with the old owners. Last few times we were there, food arrived in less than 10 minutes. Piping hot. Waitress refilled our tea and water without promptng. Coco bread still pretty good. Meat patties still good and served hot. Tea still flavorful but seems to be missing the concentrated spice (cloves?) that was in last year's.
Weak Points Where before the spiciness was due to fresh herbs and peppers, now it is because of the heavy application of black pepper. Jerk tastes like the bottles of jerk I brought back from Jamaica. A poor substitute of what before the ownership change was excellent and freshly made. The veggies used to be fresh and lightly sauteed. No longer. The seafood used to be very good. (They used to visit Kemah daily for fresh seafood.) No longer. I'm disappointed that the new owner didn't acquire the previous owner's recipes. With the new paint, service, and cloth tablecloths I'd really be able to recommend the restaurant. Go only if you want a fascimile of what used to be some wonderful, tasty food.

MY REVIEW: Weak Points: SLLLOooowwww service. Terrible wait staff. The restraurant can be empty but you won't get waited on and food served for a long time. You figure the wait staff would serve you better as they work for tips.
Specialties: Jerk Chicken, Meat Pie
Strong Point: Food, delicious. As someone pointed out earlier in a review, you will forget about the bad service and long wait for food. I been going here before they even remodeled the place.

MY REVIEW: I've given up on this place! I've been 4 or 5 times so far and only once have I been able to get what I wanted. Order something off the menu (which to me is a list of dishes that a restaurant serves day in and day out) and 9 times out of 10 they'll come back with, "Oh, we don't have that." It's true for appetizers, entrees, even beer - imagine a "Jamaican" restaurant not having Red Stripe. As a "Jamaican" restaurant, they seem to pride themselves on specialties such as Jerk Chicken. Guess what! Even though it's prominently featured on the menu, they don't ever have it. Usually, they take your order, bring back the food of the others at your table, and THEN tell you "We don't have what you ordered." Then you play the guessing game of "WHAT DO YOU HAVE?" for several iterations. In each case, a waitress will take your order, leave for 20 minutes, then come back and tell you that they don't have it. Black beans - "Oh, no....We don't have that." Jeez, is this a Jamaican restaurant or a mental ward? On my last visit, we went through about 6 house specialties that were not in stock. Finally we ended up being served some kind of Chinese chicken stir-fry. The waitress explained that since there was no chef there, she could only serve dishes that she new how to prepare (READ AS THAW OUT AND NUKE IN THE MICROWAVE!)
If you want an authentic Jamaican dining experience, this is the LAST place you wanna go. If you want rude service and an entirely frustrating dining experience where you wish at the end you'd have gone to J*ack-in-the-Box, then put this place at the TOP of your list.
I tried to give them a chance, but after 4-5 times, I will NEVER patronize this dump again. I suggest anyone else avoid it, too!

MY REVIEW: Now for those who really know, Reggae Hut has one of the only real authentic Jamaican Cuisines in town. Ya the service might be slow and the waitresses might be having a bad day, but all the regulars stay true to the spot. It holds a special place in my heart because I know all the peoples that made this place happen, I also once worked there. I could not have had a better experience, and truly Big ups to Chef Drew and Big Hot Belly, and all the folks for making the food a real Jamaican experience. I do not live in H-town anymore but for the newcomers it is definetly a must. Great neighborhood vibes, great people, and great authentic food. BIG UPS THIRD WARD,and H-TOWN! I have yet to eat jerk chicken or Patties that good. Big ups to Holder and Neville! All of the partners

MY REVIEW: My first time going there I enjoyed myself. The restraunt was very authentic... in its position. I mean if I wanted the OLD COMMERCIAL setting of a restraunt I would have went to "*****y's" but this place you get what you want GOOD FOOD. The Jerk chicken is VERY VERY SPICY yet good.. I love the beef patties and the PLANTAIN yum yum.
So if you are looking for something of natural taste and a natural setting ... try it out!

MY REVIEW: Poor Service!! a couple of the girls were rude there, and I thought it was important to be of speedy service. I waited for my check for nearly 15 mins. I even walked up to the register and the girl told me she will bring my check to the table instead when i already had my credit card ready. On top of that, she added her own gratuity for 20%!! I would of definitly tipped anyway just b/c i am a tipper, but that was just RUDE.

MY REVIEW: This place used to be GREAT! However, I bragged about the Reggae Hut to my mother and we decided to go there, BIG MISTAKE! The service was poor and the food was COLD! I was so embarassed and I wasted my money. They must be under new management or something. It's not the same place I fell in love with. If you want to give it a try I would suggest you try the garlic shrimp or the garlic crab (when in season). But it's at your own RISK! It was a horrible experience. I just wonder if they changed management.....hmmmmmmmm

MY REVIEW: Great service. My office buddies and I are on a kick to try new places for lunch in 2003 so we picked the Reggae Hut. At first, we were a bit intimidated by the location being a bunch of office geeks, but once we overcame that, we were extremely happy we picked the place. I had the curry goat which was excellent. Tender meat in a wonderful curry sauce that packed just the right amount of spices. By the end of our meal, we all had empty plates. I have no experience with Jamaican food, so I can't speak to authenticity, but from a pure flavor point-of-view, the food was excellent.

MY REVIEW: The only weak point I will give this resturant is that they have an annoying tendency to run out of brown-stew kingfish and snapper at the worst times! (when I am on my way)
The brown-stew dishes at this resturant are incredibly good. The stewed kingfish is the best dish I have ever eaten NOT at an islanders home.
The resturant is quaint, and the service is "laid-back". But the food is excellent. Go there!
