MY REVIEW: After reading a few of the comments on here, my husband and I decided to try this place out.
We are more than glad we did!
Not only was the service excellent, and the restaraunt immaculately clean, the food was spot on!
If you like Northern Indian food, this place is great.
Plenty of fresh, hot naan was served, and very ample portions as well.
We are both vegetarian, so we are always pleased to see a good variety of tastey dishes on a menu.
I highly reccomend the veggie croqets in cream sauce as well as the saag paneer.

MY REVIEW: We drove over an hour to try this place. Very disappointed. Waiter was a little haughty. The raita was soured, we didn't have to pay for it. The Tandoori Chicken stated at $13.95 on the menu was two legs and two thighs. None of the entrees came with anything extra - not so much as a piece of naan! Much less rice. The Paneer Tikka was a huge disappointment. The best thing about this visit was that we learned for less than half the drive we have the BEST Indian restaurant closer to our area. They know Paneer Tikka. This girl loves her yogurt cheese. My tip...take a little trip our way and head to Bay Area Blvd - M*ogul's. This place is way over priced for dinner with absolutely nothing added. Lunch buffet may be great. I don't know. The area looks a little "too rough" to visit after dark anyway.

MY REVIEW: The lunch buffet is simply excellent. Especially if you want to take someone who has never had Indian food a buffet is a good place to try an assortment of dishes and no one will leave hungry. I live in Houston but travel around the world quite and bit and after 3-4 days of non-Indian food, I crave "masala" the Indian style of cooking with spices. I would guess I have easily tried around 60-70 decent restaurants around the US. I would give Gourmet India very high marks for lunch as well as dinner although dinner service is a tad slow. Recently in North Carolina when the dinner was slow in coming the manager brought over a plate of assorted fritters (on the house); then how can you complain about the slow cooking. Gourmet India makes a mean mutton curry and a terrific shrimp masala - better than average Indian restaurants in Singapore. The ambiance is just right, it’s comfortable but not over whelming such that you feel you are paying more for the ambiance than the food. A secret about Indian food for non-Indians: if you feel it is too spicy, have some yogurt or a concoction called ‘sweet lassi’ (at the end of the meal), the latter is made from buttermilk both of these have an effect to mellow the effect of the spices. The warning about good tasting Indian food is that it can become addictive – you will like it too much.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I (had) a favorite Indian restaurant that we ate at for 25 years. It is now closed. It was the T*aj Mahal. I drove at least 40 miles one way, to go eat at Gourmet India, and it was worth every mile, and every drop of fuel it took to get there. The food was to say the least, excellent. The people there are very kind. I never asked for a thing. My glass of tea and water, were always full. I was asked several times by the waiter if there was anything more that I needed. The place is just great. I brought home the leftovers and had them for breakfast and even saved a bite for lunch. WOW! I can't wait to go back. They have made me and my wife very happy!!
If you love northern Indian food, please do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. Your tongue will be so happy!! The portions, for the price, I would say are reasonable, and you get nice portions I might add. Price is what I would expect to pay nowadays. Mid range in my opinion. The place looks very clean and it is a quiet relaxed atmosphere. I kind of felt like I was at home, though it was only my first visit. They make you feel very welcome. I could go on and on. Just take my word for it. Go check them out.

MY REVIEW: The food is incredible. I go to this place once a week. The lunch buffet is perfectly priced and has a good selection. Dinner is good when we have company in town. None of my guests have been disappointed coming here and I will always bring my out of towns guests to this place. The waiters are always professional and are quick to get you anything that you need. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some flavorful and hot food.

MY REVIEW: The food was excellent but.....We arrived at 10 on a Sat. night since they closed at 11. Appetizers were already unavailable and the waiters hovered over us just waiting for us to hurry and finish so they could close. So get there well before the stated closing time to enjoy a leisurely meal.
They should be clear on what their operating hours really mean. Best would be to say last orders accepted at such and such a time.

MY REVIEW: I was reviewing the reviews and decided I had to speak up. Gourmet India was (today) an excellent place to go for Indian food. The sauces were thick, rich, and felt like silk on the tongue. The Tanduri Chicken (spelling?) was a bit on the dry side but those were the older pieces. They brought out fresh and even offered the patrons fresh pieces from a platter. The waiters are always professional in their appearance, style, and manners. One of the important things I believe can make or break a meal is to have the waiter or waitress grab your plate immediately after you have finished eating and before you even get a chance to put your fork down. These waiters always ask before taking your plate. My tea was always refilled when I returned to the table, the owner goes around personally asking everyone how the food is or if there is something they can make for you directly from the kitchen. You could not ask for better service. Further, the price - compared to other Indian food restuarants - is lower. We ate at an Indian food restaurant off of Dairy Ashford. It was $20.00 a person! Gourmet India is only $11.00. I, personally, tipped $5.00 because the service was that good. (And believe me, I've tipped $0.02 before when it deserved it as well!) Try this place. Maybe it isn't the T*aj Mahal, but it is definitely worth going out and trying it once, twice, or as many times as you can. :-)

MY REVIEW: I dont live in the area but every few months this is where my tastebuds had to come...till yesterday.Sauces that were once pungent and thick were somewhat watery and didnt seem fluffy and fresh. The rice was still good but the other dishes were not of the quality I had always experienced. The Saag Paneer didnt have a rich cremy texture I had always relished. The chicken was dry.The salad was sparse on cucumbers I had to forage just to find 2 slices.I came a few minutes before noon so it there was only one other table there before us.I will try it one more time but....

MY REVIEW: I discovered Gourmet India in early May, and I must say it has been one of the best things about my summer. I have been back several times since. Not only is the atmosphere very inviting, but the service is excellent, and the prices are extremely reasonable. The food is absolutely amazing - I have never seen such a variety on the lunch buffet. And, it all tastes great too! They come around at lunch and give everyone hot, fresh bread, which is a definite plus. I have been to pretty much every Indian restaurant in town, and I have to say Gourmet India is easily my new favorite. You're doing yourself a serious disservice if you decide not to check it out!

MY REVIEW: My girlfriend and I visited a number of Indian Restaurants in Britain and we used those as a comparison to ones here in town. Gourmet India was a huge dissapointment. As our first Indian restaurant in America, it was not near as good as it was in Britain. The curries were watery and somewhat bland, and naans were tasty but were small round things; unlike the massive ones found overseas. The buffet was small (as was expected) but offered a good variety of different dishes and desserts. The atmosphere was inviting and clean; as were the staff, who were attentive and friendly. I will only go there out of desperation and to get my indian food quick fix.

MY REVIEW: Finding a good Indian resturaunt can be tough in some areas. Gourmet India used to be my favorite Indian resturaunt. They set a tough standard for many of the Indian places that popped up in the area afterward. I went almost every week for the first two or three years after it opened. The secret was they made the curry base and other sauces from fresh not processed ingredients. They also did not tone the flavor down to accomodate those that had not had Indian food previously. I used to have the chef spice up my curry base anyway. I had not been there in quite a while and noticed upon one visit that the sauces had lost a lot of their flavor, the chicken had gone to much cheaper dark (thigh )meat. I asked where the owner was and was advised they had changed owners. It was easy to taste the difference. I went back once more just to give them a chance with the same result. I discovered that the former owner had gone to another Indian resturaunt East on Westheimer. I went with a group of my Indian friends and had a positive review for that place. Gourmet is just not what it used to be. It was not horrible and the ambiance is fine. The service went down, but is still better than most. The food is better than many Indian places in Houston but no where near what it used to be. I have not been back since.

MY REVIEW: Very Very Very good. I fell in love with the place. I loved the nan... the fresh nan. I also had the chicken tandoori. An excellent price, I belive $8 a person. I very must suggest this restaurant. I would give it a 9.75 on a scale of 1-10.

MY REVIEW: I was surprised to see so many reviews of this place, starting so long ago. We live in the area, and our bank is next to the shopping center where Gourmet India is located, but we had totally overlooked its presence.
We do tend, when looking for new eating places, to rely on our Entertainment coupon book. One year, perhaps after retirement, I'm determined to see if it's possible to use up all the coupons in that book, even if we have to eat out three times a day.
A friend invited us out to eat and suggested Gourmet India. Apparently, she had read about it somewhere. Whatever she read, and wherever it was, I'm glad. She suggested a sampler plate. I think it's listed in the menu as being for two people. There were three of us, and when we finished, there was enough in the carryout boxes for three more meals.
Quantity AND quality! Every bite was delicious. Tandoori chicken is the only thing I remember by name, but there were several other dishes I recognized from other Indian restaurants.
There were also some appetizers, of which I could easily make a meal. They were called something like "subsuit bacula." If I looked at the menu, I might be shocked at how grossly incorrect that spelling might be. It's based on my recollection of how it sounded like the guy was pronouncing it. Anyway, whatever they were, I'd never had 'em before, and I'm looking forward to having 'em again.
There are several places we visit frequently, in spite of having no coupon available. This will be one of them. Even though the Bombay P*alace and M*aharajah restaurants are in the Entertainment book, we will probably wind up at Gourmet India (which is not in the book) more frequently than the other two, put together.
This is an outstanding new discovery for us. Food, decor, and staff were all top notch.

MY REVIEW: The new management at Gourmet India has done an excellent job of remodeling and bring new and delicious food to this Indian restaurant. We have followed Mintu, the head of staff, from Bombay P*alace here and are just as pleased here as we were there. The lunch buffet is better than ever. I highly recommend Gourmet India.

MY REVIEW: What a pleasant surprise! After the recent change in management, Gourmet India is easily the best Indian restuarant in Houston. The lunch buffet is very affordable and offers a wide variety of authentic Indian dishes. The waiters are also very friendly and helpful if you aren't particuarly well-versed in Indian cuisine. I was also impressed with the ambience after all of the renovations - very nice decor! I will definitely be going back!

MY REVIEW: I've been to Gourmet India many times for their wonderful affordable lunch buffet. Selection is average but food is tasty and fresh.
Hoping that they have similar quality food for dinner, I decided to take my parents there and was rudely surprised. Food was extremely slow (took close to an hour to arrive), taste was bland, portions were small and service was terrible. Because of this horrible experience, I have crossed Gourmet India off my list of restaurants to eat at. Quite unfortunate because I will miss their lunch buffet.

MY REVIEW: We went for the Saturday lunch buffet there. The food was good for the price ($8/person). There were not many choices but whatever was there was very good. When we went there were only two other single guys and only one waiter. Later too many customers came; I guess the one waiter was finding it hard to serve everybody. We had to wait for a while before we could order naan again, but when it arrived it was very hot and fresh. The ambience is good, but the location is not that appealing, may be that’s why they are able to offer the buffet for this price. We will visit there again if we are ever in that part of the city.

MY REVIEW: Hmm we were fooled by the good reviews we read!! we end up there on sunday night..and order food...chicken chaat, romali roti, keema naan and shahi panner. And nothing came up to our expectations..chicken chaat..was okie..but not the authentic taste we were looking for..romali rotis...don`t ask me..they were really bad...too rubbery..and too thick..not the ones i dreamt of eating...keema naan was decent and so was the shahi panner..
the chuntneyz with the papad were bad..service was very very poor..other than one person who did everything..and he was slow and lazy..
and this is the best part..we have eaten and ready for the check..he says their credit card machine is not working..and he wants a check..so we ended up going to a ATM nearby and getting cash!! too bad!! won`t even dream of going there again

MY REVIEW: I have to agree with the good reviews about this place. The buffet is excellant and the staff is very friendly. Both times I been there, the buffet was restocked twice within an hour because the food was that good and people were eating it up that fast. The weekend buffet seems to have two or three more selections than on weekdays.

MY REVIEW: Buffet lunch, -- so mediocre. Service very good! Price ok (8.61 inclding tax), but no bargain. Went because of the reviews, probably won't go back. Guess the previous reviewers don't know good Indian food. If you want really good, try M*onsoon Indian restaurant, just a little farther west out Westheimer.

MY REVIEW: I came here because of the reviews here... and I was not disappointed. My first time eating Indian food, too! The service was great (didn't treat my friend and I any differently because we were teenagers), and the buffet was awesome. I'm definitely coming back!

MY REVIEW: I was introduced to Gourmet India three years ago, and fell in love. I go for lunch at least once a week, often twice. You can't beat the lunch buffet for the price ($8.61, including tax), and even my Indian friends say it's some of the best in town. I'm vegetarian, and have no problems finding more than enough selection. They change the vegetarian options often, so you never get bored. The meat options are always the same...tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, and goat curry. They have the best nan in town. And on the rare occasions they have it, try the rasmali for dessert!
Since they changed ownership about a year ago, the quality has been a little inconsistant. But at worst they're still as good as most other Indian restaurants, and at best they're one of the best. The staff is quite friendly, and the service generally good. They typically keep the buffet well stocked even during the busiest times. Unfortunately, they're too far away for me to go at dinner, so I can't say what that's like.
