MY REVIEW: They have changed their lunch portion recently. You used to get a salad, soup, drink and dessert for one price. The soup is no longer offered with the lunch portion but the price remains the same. I inquired about the change on my last visit and was told that the soup is no longer being offered due to their effort to "go green." Huh? I don't think so.

MY REVIEW: Great food, lunch is delicious. We've been to both locations and the food is equally yummy at both. I love their crab cake and avocado salad for lunch. There's nothing else like it anywhere. The veggies are fresh and the crab cakes are to die for!

MY REVIEW: I went there with my dessert club a few weeks ago, and although I did like the pastries, the service was awful. I wanted to purchase a platter of sweets to share with the table, and when I tried to pay for them, he told me to sit down and he'd bring them to me. So I sat down and he forgot about me. Someone else from my table walked over grabbed it from behind the counter. By then, others had ordered at the counter and when the waitress came by, she (with much attitude) refused to give us separate checks. She offered to split the bill evenly evenly among everyone, but I didn't want to make everyone pay for what I'd bought. She was more or less absent for the rest of our stay, and after her shift was over, I had the next person split up the check for us. Overall, the desserts were good, but there are many other dessert places in town who have better service, so I'll skip this one from now on.

MY REVIEW: i had the worst experience at andre's this past saturday. i have to agree with some of you on the service. it was byfar the worst i've had on my many visits here. it was also my two friends' first visit here which did not give them a very good impression of the restaurant.
the entrees and desserts are superb but my waiter did not deserve a penny of tip. it took some time before they sat us considering there were open tables that were vacant. drinks were never refilled. it took him quite sometime before he came by to get our order. once served, he never came by to check on us.
i don't plan on visiting anytime soon; although, i've never had any trouble ordering cakes and having them ready as promised and beautifully presented and tastefully delicious. i also felt like the full waitstaff was oblivious as to what they needed to attend to. they definitely need to work on it.

MY REVIEW: Been going to this place for many years since early 80's and this place has been great in the service, the meals, and best of all the pastries. But my last few visit I see they have a new name and between the service and the quality of the meals and the pastries, they are not as good. never been to the other location, just the River Oaks location. They still make great pastries, but something has been lost, to me they have their touch.

MY REVIEW: Andres is one of the best French treats in Houston....however since Thierry's wife Danielle has retired, things have gone to Hell-in-a-handbasket as far as running the wait-staff. It is total chaos at lunchtime. Waitresses will walk by your table and ignore you. It seems everyone is confused. Some wait staff leave a check at your table at the beginning of the meal and some don't. There is a computer in the kitchen where bills are tabulated, but that gets backed-up....total chaos again. Having said that, the food is still wonderful and the pastries are to die for.....

MY REVIEW: Andres still has the best quiche in town and the new chef Patrick is wonderful.
One of the problems is that they are trying to do too many things at once....if all goes as planned they will open a new 3rd Andres on San Phillipe and Voss soon. Will they over-extended themselves?...will they become just another La M*adelaine ? Another ongoing problem is the service....you never know if you will get your food in a timely manner....some days it is excellent and some days the waiter just ignores you. Having said that you cannot beat the wonderful pastries and the homemade chocolate chip cookies (to die for).....I know I will never stop going for lunch ....been having lunch there for over 14 years....Mon Dieu!

MY REVIEW: Strong: homebaked varieties of bread, tomato basil soup, improved from before - actually now an improved copy of L*aMadeleine's tomato basil, in that there is more tsste and herbs in it, richer flavor. It is now thicker, creamier than before.
Weak: Their specialties are NOT worth it. I had $20 bill today of which I could only eat the soup & dessert. The $5 cabernet wine was vinegar. They were out of my chosen veal chop, so I said "rack of" lamb, 2 chops, very dry, no sauce, and the green beans tho numerous were tiny, limp (no tone) and tasted like they had come out of a frozen container, very watery.

MY REVIEW: Been a while since I had eaten at Andre's and was concerned about reviews, but our visit was great. Had lunch at 1:00 and waiters were prompt, courteous and food was promptly served. We had the crab cakes and, my oh my, was it good served over a large salad with avocado, tomatoes and pineapple, delicious along with the wonderful tomato basil soup. And my favorite dessert, the Napoleon, was still the same, luscious, and my friend had her favorite, the pistachio cake, smaller, but just as rich and good. It was a delightful afternoon enjoyed with my friend and good food!

MY REVIEW: Being French and enjoying good food, I was very pleased to discover this restaurant thanks to my coworkers. I've know this place for 4 years now.
When I first entered in Andre's, I felt as I was in a bakery. I could hear the several beautiful cakes/pastries "calling me". The decor is very homey, warm, like a "chalet" in the Alps or Savoie.
The food is really good. It is not an over priced French food. The cuisine is homey without being too "uptight". The portions are normal size so you can eat the dessert.
The desserts / cakes are just AWESOME !!! Until this year, I used to buy every year a galette des rois (French kings cake with almond stuffing to celebrate the Epiphany... ntt sure about the spelling). I wrote until this yeat because I make it myself now.
The staff is polite and fast (especially if you ask them to because of our short lunch breaks) But like everybody / everything, Andre's has some weak points.
- Uptown is a really nice location, but during the week at lunch time, it is almost impossible to fight a parking spot (unless you arrive before 11AM or after 1PM)
- Andre's gets full pretty quickly (a long long wait)
- because of that, it is very noisy and you cannot have a normal conversation without "screaming" (I've noticed a lot of restaurants in Houston are very noisy, even the ones which supposedly have a "quiet, romantic ambiance"...)
Despite these, I enjoy having lunch there.

MY REVIEW: For many years, I've visited Andre's probably once a month--and I come 50 miles to do it--because the prix fixe menu is great--the food is good and the price is right; it's unique but not gimmicky; and the friend I go with has Alzheimer's now but she always remembers Andre's and says "How did we start coming here?" I'd never take her anywhere else.
I do agree with others that the service can be a bit sketchy. We've always had our order taken and our food served promptly, but we have often--very often, too often--sat way too long waiting for the dessert tray and/or the check. Servers seem oblivious to discreet gestures or attempts to catch their eye. . .
That said, it's still a favorite. I know what to expect, warts and all, and the food the memories and the pastries far outshine any shortcomings on the service end. I'll be there this Saturday!

MY REVIEW: I have always loved this place, however I agree with the previous reviewer that the service lacks something. I have been eating here for years. One of the waiters likes to stand around and talk to customers, instead of focusing on what needs to be done. The service is generally fast but it seems that the wait staff are confused as to what they are doing. A general overhaul of the training of the table staff is needed badly.

MY REVIEW: We chose Andre's in River Oaks to have a mini high school reunion (Swiss boarding school). It seemed like the perfect location to reminisce about Switzerland, while surrounded by the wonderful Swiss style decor and ambiance. We had a fantastic time. The food was excellent. My husband had the cheese omelette and I had the crepes.Best crepes in Houston. Our friends also had crepes, napoleons ,etc.
The service was horrendous. The first waiter was haughty and completely ignored us. The waitress offered to refill our coffees but disappeared never to return....
Strong points: Wonderful food and decor.Best pastries in Houston.
Weak point: Worst service in Houston. By far.

MY REVIEW: Very good lunches, deserts and pastries. Highly recommend them. The only drawback is the somewhat variable table service. Twice it was excellent. The other two times it was poor. Last time the waitress twice volunteered, without prompting, that she would bring a coffee refill for my wife but never got around to it and we had to leave to get to a movie.
Still, the food is good enough that we will go back, perhaps when we are not in a hurry.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I went to Andre's today to show off their delicious cakes to our out-of-town guests. The cakes were indeed wonderful and the ladies behind the counter very friendly and helpful.
However, a hot chocolate and 2 cappuccino came out barely lukewarm. The service was rushed (to say the least) and not attentive at all, although the place was far from packed. We had a hard time getting a waiter's attention to have our beverages microwaved.
Overall, our visit at Andre's was a sort of grotesque and not very pleasant experience.

MY REVIEW: Their Beef Bourginion is to die for and so is their French Beef Stew. I went with a friend for her birthday. We had a new young gentleman as our waiter. He was excellent. He even sang Happy Brthday to my friend and put a birthday candle on her dessert !! Also very good service by Eva and Ruby...they are always super friendly and even ask about my elderly mother who live out-of-state. Andres is my second home. You will become addicted once you start eating there. I have been going for 15 years....best bakery in Houston.

MY REVIEW: The Greenway Plaza lunch bunch ventured into River Oaks to try Andre's fixed price lunch specials. The verdict is in and it is indeed favorable - for around $12 you get bread, a small salad, entree, dessert and either tea or coffee. That's a good deal in my book! Today's choices were balsamic chicken with roasted vegetables and beef roast with carrots and both were quite tasty. Our party chose creme brulee and mango mousse as our desserts and again, they were very good! It's really difficult to get past the bakery display case on the way out - keep your eyes to the right if you don't want to succumb to the temptation to take something back to the office with you! Another plus is that the portions aren't gargantuan so you leave feeling satisfied rather than stuffed. Service was extremely quick and very personable! It seems that we have found a new favorite lunch place. Huzzah!

MY REVIEW: I had lunch here once and don't remember much about it. However, I am a big fan of their croissants. THEY ARE THE BEST AND MOST AUTHENTIC, EUROPEAN-STYLE CROISSANTS I've found in Houston. K*raftsmen and C*roissant Brioche has large croissants but Andre's have the delicate flakiness I remember from bakeries in France and Switzerland. They are also cheaper than the other two places. All in all, definitely worth the extra drive even if you live closer to one of those two places. I usually pick up (to go) a combination of the traditional ones--plain, almond, and chocolate. I haven't tried the others.

MY REVIEW: We left. The waiters passed by our table many times without asking us for our order. Then a waitress approached the table to ask us for a menu - to give to another patron! When finally we were giving our drink order, the waiter abruptly left, gave back the menu from the other customer, and left again. We gave up when another waiter asked if we were being helped as he sailed past, without ever stopping to hear our response.

MY REVIEW: My, oh, my! What has happened to Andre's? It used to be a quaint tea room with good food and good service. It was obviously a big pain for the waiter to serve the two of us. We had to ask for everything, and his response was a snarl each time! The desserts were small, dry, and almost inedible. Bring back the former owners. This place has gone downhill.

MY REVIEW: I was concerned when I first spied the menu change. It had been a few years since I went to Andre's. Part of its appeal to me was the fact that it hadn't changed much in the 30 years I had been going. The quiches were always good and my favorite carrot salad was superb. The hostess was on the edge of rude and acted like she was doing me a favor by allowing me to dine there. The waitress was very nice though, which made up for it. They need at least one more waitress during the lunch rush. Very hard to get refills. I ordered the crab cake salad, my friends ordered ham and asparagus tart and a quiche lorraine with some tomato basil soup. I have to say that crab cake was the best I had ever eaten! It was moist and wonderfully flavored with a slightly vinegary mayo sauce with capers. YUM. My friends also enjoyed their dishes and cleaned each plate with relish. The desserts were not quite up to the usual standards. I had my usual napoleon, which was good, but the other desserts were not only very small but strange and bland. One friend had a mocha mousse. She said it was just ok. My other friend had some sort of smallish fruit tart which was more like a half dollar sized pie shell with chocolate drizzled on it and 3 small pieces of cut up fruit on it. It was hard and dry. All in all the meal was really good but I hope that the new owners don't screw it up with too many changes and bad attitudes.

MY REVIEW: "Revisiting Andres, or falling in love with French food all over again." I felt I had to re-review Andres after visiting this cozy River Oaks oasis last Saturday. I just can't stay away from this place. In spite of the fact that my previous visit had left me with a sour feeling about some of the service and he food, my association with Andres has stretched out over 14 years, so I was determined not to give up so easily, as I had really grown very found of this French/Swiss bakery and restaurant. I have always had a love affair with the French and French food, so one could say that my previous comments on Aug. 15th were more of a "lovers quarrel". I can forgive the French anything if they feed me well. So, all is forgiven after my last Saturday's wonderful beef bourguignon and unbelievable dessert of a chocolate/grand marnier mousse with powdered sugar and raspberries on top. I have come to realize that in the restaurant business, some days are good days and some days are not so good. Needless to say everything was excellent. The wine sauce on the beef bourguignon was to die for, and that dessert made the serotonin levels of my brain hit heaven.....it was manifique !!! I plan to contine my love affair with Andres, now knowing that every relationship with either people or food has its' ups and downs. Vive Andres!!!

MY REVIEW: I have been a customer at Andres for at least 14 years, and can remember the place when it was owned by Max from Switzerland. Since then it has been bought out by 2 Frenchies, Danielle and Thierry. Danielle and Thierry have worked hard to build up the business. I have always adored Andres. The raspberry rum cake and the white chocolate cake are two of my favorites. It seems that Andres never lacks a steady stream of customers. You have to go early to get a booth. Having said all of this, I have to add that something is changing in the attitude of this restaurant. They are developing "une attitude", which if left unchecked, will drive customers away faster than a falling souffle. Back in July, I walked in one Saturday, mouth drooling with anticipation, to eat some of their Beef Bourguignon. I had one mouthful and it was clear that there was enough salt in this dish to kill a large elephant. After gagging on 2 more mouthfuls, I asked my waitress if I could exchange this dish for some of their Quiche. I was told that I would have to pay for an extra plate of food (even though this was inedible). Five minutes later the edict was changed, and I was allowed to get a different plate. Quel dommage!! Another word to the wise, don't ever question the portion of the food on your plate, or you'll think that you are being hauled away to la guillotine ! Last week I stopped by for lunch and was served some Beef Stroganoff. The plate had about 2 tablespoons of egg noodles (much less that the usual amount)...I was told that I got less noodles because they had also included some green beans on the plate as well. Mon, Dieu ! As I said earlier, I used to adore Andres, but if this attitude of "the customer is always wrong" continues I will take my appetite, and business elsewhere.
