MY REVIEW: Ok...Here's the deal. They have soap in the bathroom now but have not rennovated since the 80's. The atmoshere is quiet, but the carpet was ratty. The edamame was adequate just like the sushi. No great shakes here, but it beats the grocery store. The wait staff seemed a little clueless at times. Had difficulties understanding the concept of having water served at the table. The serving sizes were a little small, but at least the tuna and salmon were fresh. There were no creative special rolls on the menu. The shrimp and asparagus roll was good, so we would get that again. Red Snapper was fresher than other places aound town, but still could have been fresher as it was a bit chewy in parts. There were plenty of places to sit on a Friday night, but parking is sparse. Where is everyone going?! Park on the back street near the alley way. You'r car will be in the line of sight of the security guard sleeping in his golf cart inbetween the buildings. Overall, it isn't an experience you'd leave complaining about or raving about. The food just isn't that memorable.

Pros: quiet, fortune cookies for dessert

Cons: tired looking

MY REVIEW: This restaurant has gone DOWN HILL since my last visit in 2005-2006! The quality of the sushi and sashimi was VERY disappointing. As others noted, the sashimi was a mini, unfresh version of would it should be. The sushi rolls were also sub-par. You should think twice before having dinner here!

MY REVIEW: According the menu it's under new management and let me tell you....it's gone downhill sad to say. I picked up sushi on my way home Sunday. Not only were both of the rolls I ordered down incorrectly, but the individual sushi pieces were like mini versions! I was very diappointed and sad to say that I don't feel the name to try them again.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I have been talking about trying this place for years and finally stopped by. The service was prompt. A waiter stopped by as soon as we were seated and brought our drinks quickly. The sushi arrived quickly too. Overall, we thought the sushi was good, although not the best in Houston. But for the price, it is a great deal.

The ambiance is dated, the chairs, tables and carpet in the restaurant give it the feel of a 1970s hotel lounge, but that is no reason to stay away. We plan on going back often.

MY REVIEW: I used to work in the Galleria Area and would order delivery from here several times a week. Food is always great and you can't beat the price. The location is a little dated but still, great food, and I've never had bad service. Everyone I have taken here has also loved it. Great place.

MY REVIEW: I came here once because of a recommendation from a friend, but I was disappointed. Our waiter did not check on us unless we flagged him down, and he was out-of-sight most of the time. We went during the midday lunch "rush" but the restaurant was practically deserted so the patrons should have gotten more attention. The sushi was presented well and looked tasty, but the fish was bland and the rice was too vinegary. There are plenty of other great places that charge about the same prices, so this place is worth skipping.

MY REVIEW: I love this restaurant. I eat sushi (not necessarily from this place) at least 3-4 times a week. This restaurant is especially near and dear to my heart because the location is nice- in a shopping center, but not in the middle to where you feel exposed; the staff is friendly without being overbearing; the food is good quality- i've never felt the icky overly fishy feeling eating the fish; and the price- unbeatable. For the most bang for your buck without feeling like you had to settle, this place is IT!

MY REVIEW: The sushi is about average here and the overall appearance of the place is dated, but I still come back a quick (30-45 minute) round of good-sushi time. It does have that chinese buffet feel to it.

Service isn't the friendliest, but I haven't had to wait too long for the chef to make my order. The price is reasonable.

Overall I enjoy eating here when I am looking for regular sushi, not the spectacular, artsy sushi of more expensive sushi bars.

MY REVIEW: I have ordered the sashimi several times; it's very fresh, and it deserves an A+ (although it's a bit over-priced). The special sushi rolls are also delicious--I had a bite of my friend's maki roll and salmon sushi.

My complaint is that the prices are too high for the quantity... A little roll should come, at least, with a complimentary japanese salad or soup. Tradition is the key of quality!

MY REVIEW: I have always liked this restaurant, and it gets better every time. The baked rolls are especially good. For the price you pay, this is the best in town. You may find more selections or better sushi at other places, but you will pay a lot more for them. By far the best value in town, and you can't beat the location.

MY REVIEW: The sushi is pretty good. The River Oaks location is easy to get to. Fast Service. They stick to bite size pieces which sushi should be. I wouldn't rate it as the best place in town but it is good. The great thing about is the chinese menu allows you to take a date or friends who aren't really into sushi. The variety is good and the atmosphere is cozy and you just have to love the name.

MY REVIEW: Back Door Sushi is a gem in the River Oaks. since I moved to River Oaks 2 years ago, I've been serching for a good Chinese restaurant and I accidently found Back Door Sushi. the restaurant is actually called Hunan River / Back Door sushi. it's orginally a Hunan style Chinese restaurant and they add this sushi bar in the back of the building long time ago. it's like you got two restaurants' menu at the same place. if you ever dreaming about sushi delivery you got your dreams come true, they deliver sushi and Chinese food (my favor) together. can you imagine fresh sushi along with your favor Chinese food deliver to your front door? you gotta try it. if you enter the restaurant from the front door (Hunan River side) you'd impressed by the beautiful patio. very romantic atmosphere in the night and I highly recommend this place to bring your date. if you use the back door and eat in the sushi section it's a totally different experience, it's more relaxing and laid back around the sushi bar. I've been talk to the owner and their staffs a few times, very easy to deal with. not like the usual grand pa&mom Chinese, their staffs are younger and enthusiastic (I heard they just took over the restaurant last year) I tried they white tuna, fresh & delicious. ask the sushi chef for his sepcial rolls and daily fish. the Chinese section is more up-scale but for sushi lovers, Back Door Sushi is really a bargain, you'd get more than you paid for. btw, very crowded shopping center (River Oaks), usually takes me 10~15 min. to find a parking space.

MY REVIEW: I liked this restaurant. The sushi I tried was very fresh, well-prepared, and served very quickly. The location is also ideal if you're catching a movie in the River Oaks theater or just doing some shopping. It's not gourmet fare by any means, but for a casual, no-hassle bite to eat, it's perfect.

MY REVIEW: The employees looked bored, the food wasn't that great, and the place smelled funny. It also seemed dirty. Won't be back.

MY REVIEW: This is a place to get sushi cheaper than usual and fairly quick because there usually aren't many people there. It's pretty mundane stuff, sometimes looks a little off color and is a little on the small side but it beats the buffet sushi bars around town. They have a decent assortment of rolls and sushi to choose from but no tempura style rolls. The restaurant is pretty large and the lights are low so there is a quiet, relaxed, casual, uncrowded feel to it. If you want some sushi but don't feel like dressing up, impressing anyone, spending a lot of money and sharing the restaurant with a big crowd - go here!

MY REVIEW: I ordered the spider roll, it looked like it was put together in a short amount of time. The quality of it was horrible; the rice was not evenly cooked some parts were still hard, the wasabi was watery, the miso soup was cold, even the fish had some problems. I saw the tuna in the sushi case had a big circular hole. Also some of the fish had a smell that was a few dayz old. I am certainly not ever going to come back to this place.

MY REVIEW: We went on advice of other reviewers and can't figure out what they thought was so good. The salmon roe was watery, the tuna maki was bad, the wasabi had no flavor. Good service, loud television, the place smelled like fried food ... we will not be back.

MY REVIEW: I ave eaten there a few times and have no complaints. The sushi is fresh. The bar is neat and well organized with ingredients displayed in windows and food is prepared while you watch. The sake presentation is excellent. The green tea is chimese but is searved in a full pot. the water is served with no hssle in attractive glasses with lemon. They have an extensive menu with plenty of coices. Prices are very reasonable and they offer many Chinese entrees for those ot adventurous enough to try sashimi. THere do needs to be more tempura, and the pu pu platter could be improved a bit. The fried Back Door Roll sushi and the dumplings are to be had at least once & part of the fun is tring something new with each visit. THere is a tv over the bar but it isnt a distraction. The waitstaff is courteous a professional and food is brought to you within a reasonable time. The chef, David, is very friendly and takes good care of his customers. He will usually remember you on return visits and encourages your feedback. Ive only been there a few times and on my birthday he suprised me with a complimentar slice of cheesecake! I havent eaten lunch there but they do offer lunch specials and they are open til around 19:30 PM. They are located near the Landmark River Oaks theater and the Laugh Stop comedy club- so you can dine and round out the evening with entertainment, and its a great place to bring a date. The atmosphere is good and I highly recommend it.
