Morton's, The Steakhouse

MY REVIEW: Morton's remains one of the better steak restaurants in the city. Yes, a little expensive but well worth the dollars. The four at our table exjoyed the seafood tower. Each had a steak which was cooked to perfection. Side vegetables are average. Wine list is large with a price range for every budget. The chocolate cake is the tops. If your a chocolate freak like my wife it is a most. I would also like to note the dinning rooms are small and some what loud.

MY REVIEW: Entry Way was 2 wooden doors and the foyer/reception area was small. Not too impressed within the first couple of minutes. I had a reservation set for 8:30 and we had to wait for about 5 minutes for our table. Once we were seated we waited another 10 minutes for our waiter to stop by. He was more concerned with his larger tables.
We went here to celebrate our engagement and to have a romantic dinner. The first thing my fiance and I noticed was how noisy it was in the restaurant. We could hardly hear each other talk and we could not even hear the background music. The Caesar salad was average - croûtons were not impressive - I think M*cDonald's croûtons could have a better presentation than what Morton's was using.
The steaks and vegetables were outstanding. We had the filet's and had lyonnaise potatoes and grilled asparagus. Potatoes were not too impressive. The asparagus was delicious.
For desert you can't beat the warm chocolate cake with hot fudge/chocolate in the center with ice cream on the side. Absolutely the best desert ever. The key lime pie was also delicious.

MY REVIEW: This is an old-school steakhouse that's been around for years. Being an old customer, I was excited to return.
Although the prices are MUCH more than what they used to be, it was good to see the quality of the food has remained consistent. For a Friday night, it was not super busy but the service was EXCELLENT. We had the filet mignon which was cooked to perfection and the accompanying sides were also well-prepared. Wines are quite expensive, especially by the glass. A bottle is much more economical. The molten chocolate is still the best...and to die for.

MY REVIEW: Overall very satisfied, but perhaps a bit overpriced. I agree with the others that it can get very loud.
I am compelled to comment on deegeefoodie's point, "And, very sadly, they didnt have any of the reds chilled as they should be, especially with a fine steak." Red wine is usually served slightly below ROOM TEMPERATURE. Though there are strong arguments that it should be served closest to the temperature of a European wine cellar (quite cold), I think many people prefer to drink red wine at room temperature (as we consider it today). So I wouldn't make any judgments on the basis that the red wine you ordered was not chilled. Having said that, people have their preferences, and if you want a chilled red wine, a fine restaurant like Morten's should be able to comply with your request.

MY REVIEW: We visited Morton's for our anniversary with my brother,a Houston attorney, and his wife. We were seated practically on top of another diner's booth and crowded between 2 tables with barely enough room for the waiter to get by. The first thing by brother said after looking at the menu was "We could have eaten at Tony's for these prices". Everything was ala carte and overpriced. The bread was good but you can get the same thing at Krogers, nothing special. I have had much better Caesar salads also. The steaks were good, cooked right and tender and the waiter was nice enough to divide the salad and baked potato as we planned to share them. This place was so noisy we couldn't hear each other talk without shouting. I was so disappointed because we wanted something special for our anniversary but there is no atmosphere and it is so overpriced for what you get in food and presentation also. We will not go back.

MY REVIEW: Went on a date to this steakhouse
Plus: Old moneyed men's club decor but nice; fabulous tasting rib-eye, cooked as I had ordered; delicious beefsteak tomatoes with their own special dressing topped with blue cheese [it was not Maytag's, but close - yum!]
Service was polite and attentive, but not pushy. Question I had got answered promptly.
Minus: LOUD, almost to the point of irritating. Felt almost squashed up next to other diners; could not hear my date talking and ha and I kept raising our voices.. not good!
I thought the wine list as very shallow; not the depth of what I'd like to see in that fancy of a place. And, very sadly, they didnt have any of the reds chilled as they should be, especially with a fine steak.
A shame; since the wine was brought to us and then we were told they wouldnt pour for 10 minutes. And warm to boot!
Score: a toss-up; go if you can read lips and drink mixed drinks or water with your steaks. Definitely order the tomatoes with that to-die-for blue cheese sauce/dressing on the top.
As for myself, not 100% sure I'd go back - at least, not on MY nickel :)

MY REVIEW: Steak in Houston-what a job to choose! I always loved the C*apital Grille in DC -never tried the one here. F*leming's is nearest home, T*aste of Texas still great but organising a dinner with with a colleague, we decided on Morton's.
Overall it was one of those experiences where nothing actually went wrong, food was good, wines good (but pretty expensive)-yet somehow it just missed being great. I had only a main course, my mate had starter and main-his shrimp looked good and our steaks were cooked to perfection and tasty.
I think my main issue was that dining at Morton's used to be some kind of experience. Now it seems just a very adequate meal , pretty pricey but not excessively so, and I miss the former grandeur of dining here.
We visited on a Friday evening, about 8.30pm so fairly late by Houston standards and the place was pretty quiet. Maybe I like it better when it is full to the brim and there is more pace and excitement.I would go back, but it may not be the favourite steak restaurant in Houston any more. 6.5 out of ten?

MY REVIEW: I was disappointed with my first trip to Morton's. They overcooked both of our steaks due to waiter error. They offered to get us new steaks but I don't like returning food. They also overcooked the lobster in the lobster bisque. I did not particularly like the seating arrangements either....we were seated right next to others and I felt like it was hard to have a conversation without our neighbors hearing every word (if you go please request a regular table in the middle seating or individual booth; they put us a very small table with one chair and one seat on a booth/bench type layout with others on both sides of us).
Anyway, I was expecting a little more out of the place given the price range. I've been to Ruth's Chris about 10 times and never once walked out of there feeling disappointed in the meal. I relayed my story to a coworker and he, too, said his steaks were overcooked when he went as well.
Sadly, my favorite part of my meal was the mashed potatoes. I joked saying that if I ever went back I'd be much better off ordering two sides of potatoes and no steak.

MY REVIEW: This was my first visit to Morton's and I wasn't as pleased as I thought I would be. I think for the price I prefer R*uth's Chris. The steaks were good, but I've had better. And their selection of sides and desserts were your normal selections - I was expecting some creativity for the prices that we were paying. I also didn't like the way everything seemed so cramped - the tables were too close to each other. The waiters kept having to ask people to push in their chairs so that they could wheel the meat cart around. And the restaurant was noisy. I was just surprised at how noisy it was and I think that was because everyone was sitting on top of each other that you had to talk loud for your party to hear you. If I had to spend that kind of money again I would definitely go to R*uth's Chris instead of Morton's.

MY REVIEW: We love steak and dining out. Let me lay it out for you. Our waiter was great and friendly. The drink service was marginal. The filet was great and cooked as requested. The shrimp appetizer tasted like rubber. The crab cake was very fishy. The creamed spinach was bland. The bread was hot and fresh. I wish there would have been another potato dish instead of the bland baked potato. The chocolate cake was awesome!
Overall, the experience was pretty good, but I was expecting more for a very hefty bill. $$$ P*erry's Steakhouse here I come!!!!
Also, who is this moron that got so angry at other people expressing their opinion about Morton's? Does he have ties to the restaurant somehow? This is a website devoted to OPINIONS and he is indignant that others actually have opinions. Find something else to do with your time.

MY REVIEW: Just a few comments about some of the other comments I've read here. I have eaten at Morton's several dozen times over the years and I know their menu by heart. The menu is simple, but the food is always flawless, and if it's not they will never expect you to pay for it. To the idiot that made a comment about the Rosemary bread and the home fries, they don't serve Rosemary bread or home fries! This person must have eaten at a different restaurant that night! In addition, each order of asparagus comes with 6 or 7 huge stalks which is way more than one person can eat with the size of the steaks. As for the baby that got a little water spilled on them. I think this fool is probably exagerating based on the fact that they were expecting a dry cleaning voucher for a water spill. Come on!!! Is this person for real?? If you wanted to have a private conversation, you should have stayed home for dinner! How can you condemn servers for doing their job?

MY REVIEW: It is fabulous! Food is awesome service etc flawless. I needed to comment on some of the reviews here. The one complaining about Rosemary bread and bad homefries. They do not serve either of those items! I think the people who complained obviously were at a restaurant that was above their means and it made them bitter. This restaurant is EXCELLENT!
One more thought. The guy who complained his steak was in a plastic bag inside a nice foil bag????? Did he want it wrapped in gold????????

MY REVIEW: I finally caved in and ate here with my husband, Lamont. And can I say that I was pleasantly surprised! I had the ribeye and the famous cheesecake. The cognac selections are renown too! My only disappointment was the there were no hot wings as appetizer. The M*etropolitan Grill in Seattle, WA serves up means hotwings as appetizers, and it's a steak house. Hint-Hint, Morton's.

MY REVIEW: My boyfriend took me to Morton's for our anniversary. I am not a steak eater; but I got the Cajun Rib-eye and I absolutely loved it!! Our waitress was so knowledgeable and professional! She had so many suggestions!! She knew it was my & his 1st time there & she knew it was a special night so she wanted to make sure we had a great experience.
We started our meal with a couple of cesar salads. We had the sautaed mushrooms & the mashed potatoes for our sides. Everything was really good but it wasn't anything out of this world! My boyfriend had the double filet (very tasty!!)
The staff were really nice and they really made me feel like royalty! I was really impressed when they were calling my boyfriend by his last name and they all knew that it was our 1yr anniversary. The hostess wished us a happy aniversary and a good meal. The waiters would congradulate us as we where eating our meal! It made the night really special!
At the end of the meal we ordered the key lime pie which was superb! The sweetest thing was that the waitress made it complimentary for our anniversary!
I was very impressed with the restuarants presentation and customer service. I am planning on going back. Maybe a treat for my parents! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to make his or her night special!
My boyfriend made an excellent choice!! :) I will never forget that night!

MY REVIEW: We decided to go to Morton's for our anniversary. Although the ambiance was really nice and service was good, we have rated the place with a 6/10. The filet although tender, was tasteless. However, the rosemary bread and the salad were really good. The crab cake has too much salt and the 'home fries' were limp french fries. We got 3 stalks of plump asparagus to share, and how can you screw that up. It didn't have quite the cut-above wait staff that you normally see in other steakhouses. O'R*ourke's here I come!!!

MY REVIEW: After seeing Morton's consistently listed as one of the top steakhouses in the U.S., I was excited for our party of 5 to dine.
I would rate the service 4 out of 5 stars but the steaks, which we specifically went for, a 2&1/2 out of 5. Each in our party ordered a different type of steak but all had about the same opinion. "The steak was OK but not anything to tell someone about or return for." Definitely not the quality one would expect at the menu prices.
Many fine resturants in Houston, for 25 - 40% less, serve much better quality.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I went here for his birthday. We were seated at a table next to the divider between the main room and the banquet rooms. Two men stood behind this low divider talking and folding napkins. I felt like we couldn't have a private conversation because they were there the whole time. Our waiter was visiblly miffed that we didn't order a bottle of wine. The busboy spilled a pitcher of water over my shoulder. He grabbed some towels for me and changed the chair because it was soaked. Our waiter saw it happen and didn't come over. Everything proceeded just like it hadn't happened. A few minutes later, our waiter brought our food out and said "did you get some water spilled on you?" I said, "yes" and he said, "I'm sorry, would you cut into your steak and see if it's cooked ok?" That was it, no more mention of it. The managers never came over. There was no offer for anything (ie my dry cleaning, dessert)... nothing. I don't remember the food. I think it was good, but not great. We mentioned the water incident to the two managers who were hanging out with hostess when we left. They apologized and said they would speak to the staff and no one had told them so they "would have liked to make it right, but since your meal is over there isn't anything we can do now." They did offer to make it better next time, but for us there won't be a next time.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I have been going to Mortons for over a year now and absolutely love the place. We go to Morton's a few times a month and have never left unhappy. They hands down have the best filet in town and the lobster is phenomenal. Try to save room for desert (which is easier said than done) because the Godiva Chocolate Cake is the best desert in Texas! We always have great service from the wait staff to the manager himself. John has done a wonderful job surrounding himself with great people. If you have never eaten there of haven't in a while you owe it to yourself to give the restaurant a try! You will not be disappointed!

MY REVIEW: Absolutly the best resturaunt in Houston. I have tried dining at all of the other "big" steakhouses in Houston and have numerous times had to call Morton's to save my night. This is truely a great place, not so trendy that you feel like a you are at a singles club but instead treated as a top notch patron, therefore deserving the best meal ever. I am normally not a lover of seafood, but here, if we try to skip the appetizers, I am the first to step up and order the bacon wrapped scallops. There is no better appetizer in Houston. Secondly, the porterhouse for two is so amazing that we try to make it to Morton's at least once a week. As for after dinner, we tend to skip dessert but only because the chocolate martini is to die for. I love all of the staff from, Ash, the valet all the way up to John, the manager. Including Richard as our waiter, the evening is guarranted to be remembered as perfect. I would suggest that everyone visit Morton's at least once, but I promise you that after your evening, you too will not make it your last.

MY REVIEW: Morton's is truely a dining experience. This location has a new manager - John Recio that really adds a persoanl touch by greeting you when you arrive and oversees the delivery of your meal at the table. The Cajun Rib-eye is one of the best steaks I have ever tasted. The Chicken Christopher is enough for two persons. Good food, great staff and a fantastic manager.

MY REVIEW: We did not get off to a good start with our experiences at Morton's. Two of the first four times, we had one problem or another. Both times the management responded appropriately. Whether in Houston or out-of-state, we enjoy the terrific steaks.
Appetizer: I particularly like the scallops. I sometimes order them for my entrée rather than appetizer. (I remind them not to over cook them.) The crab cake contains such huge pieces of crab; I'm amazed the cake stays together.
SALAD: The spinach salad is the best I have had anywhere. The Caesar is so-so.
ENTRE: Rib eye: GREAT. The filet: FANTASTIC.
DESERT: If you are a glutton for punishment (Pun intended) you MUST try the molten chocolate topped with vanilla ice cream. Can you say, "To die for"?
SAUCES: Béarnaise, super. Hollandaise, bland.

MY REVIEW: Our steaks were NOT cooked as ordered. When my wife's steak was returned - it left me with mine ready to eat - but - had to wait for her's to return. Service was adequate -- but - not worth any rave..
However, when we took our steaks home - another disappointment! They were put in this nice foil bag - it looked great. However, when opening the nice bag - the steaks themselves were thrown in a plastic bag nothing short of a supermarket produce bag!
I wrote a letter to Morton's in Chicago to tell them of our bad experience. I never receive a reply of any kind. This should tell you of their attitude toward their customers. I don't think that we will be back. Furthermore, I do not give any recommendations to any of my friends for Morton's or their service.
They did not meet the expectations of an expensive steak dinner.
Overall, I would give them a D-.
