Yan Sushi Japanese Restaurant (CLOSED)

2264 W Holcombe Blvd Houston TX
 1517 Westheimer Rd Houston TX
4502 Highway 6 Sugar Land TX

1517 Westheimer Rd, Houston, Texas

MY REVIEW: I simply love this place. It is by far and away the best restaurant value in Houston (to my knowledge - and I've lived here 45 years). The waitstaff and management are a delight, the sushi is always fresh and moderately priced, and the other Japanese dishes on the menu allow you to take the uninitiated to a sushi restaurant and have everyone come away happy.

KUDOS TO ALL MY FRIENDS AT YAN SUSHI! Thanks Raymond for all the personalized service when I take guests. I will continue to spead the word...

MY REVIEW: The original owner of Yan Sushi is now at THIS location (Missouri City). One thing that I really like is their Chicken Tempura - most sushi restaurants do not have this item. Their potstickers are also good, and their salmon soup bowl is good as well. My favorite type of sushi here is their Chicken Tempura sushi - it's delicious!

This restaurant is pretty casual, nothing fancy, but the food is reliably good and inexpensive.

MY REVIEW: Cheap and tasty, Yan is a good place to check out if you're craving sushi for cheap. The food was fresh, made quickly, and enjoyable. I had the softshell crab and a spicy tuna roll. Nothing extraordinary, but it hit the spot. The warm sake is good and fairly priced, and they even have green tea ice cream. For all of that food, we paid about $40 tip included, which is pretty good if you ask me.

If you're looking to wow your friends with a lavish assortment of wonderful rolls, or even entertain, this is not the place. It's very tiny and plain and not flashy at all. It's definitely not the best sushi place in town, but it's ideal for a quiet dinner for two.

MY REVIEW: I love the sushi - extremely fresh. I called ahead and arranged for a Traditional Japanese dinner for 5 of us. It was damn good! Nine courses and the service was incredible.

MY REVIEW: i've been wanting to try this place out for quite a time now. my rating of food would be 7 ouf of 10. their lunch bento box specials are extremely decent since it's overpacked. i had a sushi combo special that came with miso soup and that was a tummy pleaser to me. service was splendid since we were a group of 6 and that might have been the "attentive motive". they also have frequent dine in cards for a free appetizer after 5 visits. othen then the mighty small bar area, this place here is just average. hope this review helped.

MY REVIEW: I will never return to this restaurant. The sushi tasted old and mushy and the seaweed salad was crispy (how is this even possible?). The service was mediocre but even mediocre service will not lure me into returning. There are far better restraunts in town, try them first!

MY REVIEW: Only been there once when back in town. But I have to give them props. We went as a group and my friend's girlfriend declined to eat since she didn't want sushi. She might have been in a mood, too. Waitstaff came by during the main course to give her this mondo fruit plate, on the house. Great unexpected touch and they seemed to be having a fun time with their job; always a good sign. They went out of their way to make the meal enjoyable. A+

MY REVIEW: Yan Sushi has gone downhill fast. Note how there is rarely more than 4 or 5 tables of people in the restaurant now. The sushi used to be of decent quality for a fairly cheap price. Last 3 times I ate there the sushi tasted mushy, not firm and just off. I tried dinner and lunch but it was very unpleasant. Too bad as I live just a couple of blocks away and fast sushi was always a plus even though I frequented other places too. Well, after those scary encounters with sushi of very questionable quality and freshness I won't be back. I will be at N*ippon or Cafe J*apon.

MY REVIEW: it is a good cheap place to eat sushi. last night I did not feel like eating sushi, so I ordered entree "grilled yellow tail cheek".

What a mistake it was! First, it came fried, not grilled. Second, the portion was tiny, with a very little meat and a lot of big bones. Third, it tasted like nothing. I left the restaurant hungry.

Their bento boxed are good though.

MY REVIEW: Great Sushi place!

the food is great and they have pictoral menus. The waitstaff is very eager to please and will make custom sushi for you if you have allergies or just like bizarre combinations. :) they dont look at you like youre an idiot if you dont know what anything is, they will answer all of your questions. the place is clean, and well run. the sushi is very well priced and well made.

Yan Sushi for sushi lovers with a conessiers tastebuds, and a m*cdonalds budget.

MY REVIEW: The sushi was marginal, and the yellow lighting sort of made me feel queasy. Service was good, but unfortunately my visit was marred by the old drunk guy at the bar crying about his girlfriend. This guy also frequents B*eso, for anyone that keeps a lookout for these sort of things. The white tuna was definately the high part of my meal, it was sort of seared as opposed to raw like most sushi joints. I think this is a decent sushi place, all in all, although that drunk guy thats always at the bar needs to find a new home.

MY REVIEW: The sushi was okay, as were the hand rolls and the miso soup....not great, but okay....honestly I have been other places and had better....the prices are good, but I would be willing to go somewhere else for what I consider to be 'fresher' food....just my analysis...

The waitstaff was great, as were the sushi chefs...I didn't wait long for my order at all....

MY REVIEW: The only decent thing about this place was its sushi and even that was just so-so. Service was terrible. Saturday night at the prime of dinner time, they only had 4 tables occupied with 3 wait staff. The wait staff was more concerned with talking with each other than attending to us. The udon was over cooked to the point of being mushy. As my partner suggested, spend a couple of bucks more and go to R*ickshaw for some quality food and service...don't bother with Yan.

MY REVIEW: I love that this place is casual, shirt and jeans kind of sushi restaurant. Their gyoza, shumai, and any of the eel sushi are all very good. I've been a customer for over three years now and followed them from their old location to the new one. Very reasonable prices. Good sushi shouldn't need all the pomp and circumstance, which drives up the price.

MY REVIEW: I love love love this place. I've gone thru the drive thru and eaten in. The sushi is fantastic and fresh. Great roll combinations. The chef will make special rolls at your request with they type of fish and veggies, etc. that you want. The udon is the BEST! This is such a charming little place. A gem. A great first date place. I'm glad they expanded. Shows you how good business has been for them.

MY REVIEW: The service was horrible. The waitress seemed knowing nothing about sushi. I ordered a lunch special and emphasized no mackerel. The waitress told me that the special did not have mackerel. but it still served with mackerel. They played country music and it's very noisy.

Also, I order seaweed salad and another salad for my friend. my salad smelled sour and my friend's dressing tasted weird. I meant weird, not exotic That's my only visit here. won't go any more

MY REVIEW: good points: good service, almost too good. the waiter was constantly at my table talking to me, and asking me questions. the sushi chef was very easy to communicate with, and gave me some good pointers on whats fresh, etc. the price is darn cheap, which leads me to the WEAK points....see below!

weak points: the cuts are small, very small. i suppose for the price it's worth it. the wasabi looked off-color, it was a much lighter green then i am used to. the taste was fine though, so no worries (i hope). my first round of rolls tasted like hand soap, but they happily re-made my order and everything was good to go after that!

summary: good, cheap, but i still have my concerns. i mean, can you really trust a sushi place that has COUNTRY MUSIC as their background music?

MY REVIEW: I stopped by here for luch with my mother. The women hates japenese food, she thinks everything they offer is raw. But she ended up liking the place so much. They have good sushi at affordable prices. The best part is the happy hour, you can get a tray of sushi(18) or an entray for just 6.95. So If I would rate Yan Sushi from a scale of One to Ten. 8 1/2, good location, good mood, clean, and great food. Stop by if you are sushi addict or just plain beginner.
